Sinatra Songbook Lives On Robert Davi pays tribute to the Chairman of the Board BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
Robert Davi singing his way through the Frank Sinatra songbook
DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
M
ost people may know Robert Davi as a respected character actor who has appeared in a number of films over the past three plus decades, including Die Hard, Showgirls and The Goonies. But in the last few years, the Long Island native has dedicated a fair amount of time returning to his musical roots. In 2011 he released his debut album, the Phil Ramone-produced Davi Sings Sinatra—On the Road to Romance. Recorded with a 30-piece orchestra at Capitol Records Building in Hollywood, the same site for many storied Sinatra recording sessions, Davi tackled a dozen standards from his idol’s canon including “Best Is Yet to Come,” “Summer Wind” and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning.” It was good enough to crack the Top 10 of the Billboard Jazz charts and impressive enough for Quincy Jones, who worked with Sinatra in the studio, to say, “I have never heard anyone come this close to Sinatra’s sound—and still be himself. Many try, but Robert Davi has the voice, tone, the flavor and the swagger.” For Davi, the Sinatra connection runs deep and goes beyond growing up in an ItalianAmerica household where Sinatra’s music was a staple. Davi’s initial acting role found him working with the man himself. “I did my first movie with him, Contract on Cherry Street. I was a young kid and as an Italian-American growing up in New York and doing my first film with him was quite an experience. He was just amazing and he kept in touch with me over the years when I’d see him along with Jilly Rizzo and some of the other friends and entourage,” Davi recalled over the phone from his California home. “He was just the most gracious….what you would expect. In my show, I tell some anecdotes about him and I tell the audience how I had my first Jack Daniels with Frank Sinatra and how that happened. [I have a number of] fun stories.” Far from being just another actor taking a crack at the Great American Songbook, Davi’s musical roots run deep. Growing up in a traditional Italian household on the border of Deer Park and Dix Hills, he was exposed to an enormous amount of opera and classical music. Names like Caruso, Tito Gobbi, Franco Corelli, Mahler and Debussy pop up in conversation alongside crooners like Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and of course, Sinatra. But it was the latter who provided the aspiring vocalist with the bridge between the worlds of classical music/opera and pop. “I always loved it concurrently. I loved classical music with a passion; the opera and symphony, from Debussy to Mahler. I
‘‘
To me, Sinatra is the greatest entertainer of all time. If you want to say there are two voices of the century, one being Sinatra and the other being Caruso. Caruso did to opera what Sinatra did to popular music. Sinatra had a very elegant approach to all the music as well as being an ultimate jazz singer. —Robert Davi
’’
had a huge affinity to it. It’s not so much the transition to pop music because had there never been a Frank Sinatra, I don’t think I would have been interested in trying to bridge that gap,” Davi revealed. “To me, Sinatra is the greatest entertainer of all time. He is the first artist that combined the tenets of Bel-Canto singing, which has its roots in the Italian tradition of operatic Bel-Canto singing. In other words, if you want to say there are two voices of the century, one being Sinatra and the other being Caruso. Caruso did to opera what Sinatra did to popular music. Combining some of those Bel-Canto techniques is what Sinatra introduced into popular music. And that sound appealed to me. It was something that was classicism with beauty and sensibility. He wasn’t somebody that hammed it up. He had a very elegant approach to all the music as well as being an ultimate jazz singer.” Authenticity is a major part of the Hofstra
alum’s homage to Sinatra when he’s on the road. Audiences not only get the richness of Davi crooning in front of a 30-piece orchestra that features a number of musicians who played behind Sinatra, he’ll often have Tom Dreesen, a veteran comedian who spent 14 years warming up audiences for Sinatra, serve as his opening act. The integrity with which he approaches the material has found him playing a number of impressive gigs including Feinstein’s/54 Below, Foxwood’s Casino and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in Australia. This dedication to his craft and the memory of Sinatra runs deep in Davi. “Being able to swing and do all that Sinatra did with his tone go hand-in-hand,” he said. “Sinatra would have loved to have sung opera as well. That was a big passion of his. That’s not to say that at some point I won’t branch out but for now, I have a need to bring as much attention to this music and him as I can.”

POP CULTURE
That’s Life: Frank Sinatra Facts BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
F
rancis Albert Sinatra passed away on May 14, 1998. During his 82 years on Earth, he was one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In addition, he left an enormous imprint on pop culture via his success in film, radio, television and entertainment. Here are 20 quick facts about Ol’ Blue Eyes.
1
One of Sinatra’s earliest musical stints was as a member of the Hoboken Four, who passed an audition to appear on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour radio show. They each earned $12.50 for the appearance and won first prize—a six-month contract to perform on stage and radio across the United States.
2
The Hoboken native was hired in June 1939 by band leader Harry James, who signed Sinatra to a twoyear contract of $75 a week.

6
Sinatra’s first attempt at owning his label was a failed attempt to purchase Verve Records from founder Norman Granz.
7
While Bing Crosby was an early influence, Sinatra later believed that Tony Bennett was “the best singer in the business.”
8
Frank Sinatra founded Reprise Records in 1960 as a way to allow him more artistic freedom for his recordings. He garnered the nickname “The Chairman of the Board” and even after selling the imprint off to
Frank Sinatra in a scene from 1960’s Can-Can (Photo courtesy of 20th Century Fox) Warner Brothers in 1968, he retained a 20 percent ownership stake in the imprint.
9
On Sept. 21, 1983, Sinatra filed a $2 million court case against Kitty Kelley, suing for punitive damages, before her unofficial biography, His Way, was even published.
10
Sinatra moved on from Harry James and signed a deal to front the Tommy Dorsey band for $125 a week at Chicago’s Palmer House.

Sinatra’s Turn At The Movies The crooner proves he wasn’t just a song and dance man BY STEVE MOSCO
I
SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
n Frank Sinatra’s early days of stardom, the man known as the Chairman of the Board could send legions of bobby soxers swooning with his Italian light baritone and a flicker of his ol’ blue eyes. But as the 1940s turned into the 1950s and a string of poorly received musicals and an adulterous affair with Ava Gardner caused his popularity to wane, Sinatra sought to turn his fortunes around. He found an opportunity in film—but more specifically, film beyond musicals.
From Here To Eternity (1953) The Sinatra renaissance started here with From Here To Eternity. Nabbing the role following a disastrous vocal chord hemorrhage in 1950, the film would prove to be exactly what Sinatra needed to get back into the public eye, and then some, as the film scored Sinatra an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Starring alongside Burt Lancaster and Montgomery Clift, Sinatra plays Private Angelo Maggio, a violent yet likable Italian-American GI whose cocky attitude gets him into trouble again and again. Sinatra is the emotional backbone of the film, and his performance should be remembered just as much if not more than the famous beach scene with Lancaster and Deborah Kerr.
Suddenly (1954) A lesser-known political drama of the 1950s, Suddenly is a taunt thriller in the vein of film noir that finds Sinatra playing against type as a psychotic assassin. Based in postwar America, the film sees the President of the United States scheduled to journey by train through the small Californian town of Suddenly. Sinatra’s John Baron, claiming to be a lead FBI agent, turns out to be an assassin looking for the perfect perch to kill the passing president. Though the film is mostly forgotten, Sinatra sizzles as the ruthless Baron. Released a mere nine years before the assassination of JFK, rumors swirled that Suddenly was Lee Harvey Oswald’s favorite movie and that Sinatra had the film pulled from distribution because he felt partially responsible for Kennedy’s death. Though intriguing, there is no concrete evidence of either rumor.

The much anticipated Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hits theaters June 22. Directed by J.A. Bayona, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, B.D. Tick Safety Tips
How to guard against Lyme Disease BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDAIGROUP.COM
Summer begins the prevalent, yet preventable illness that is Lyme disease. Once the weather begins to warm, the threat of tick-borne illness escalates. Local tick expert and owner of East End Tick & Mosquito Control (www. tickcontrol.com), Brian Kelly, has offered up ten tips for East End residents to consider to help decrease the risk of contracting a tick-related illnesses. Kelly is a strong believer that “prevention is better than a cure” and takes a proactive approach to tick safety. “Each season is becoming progressively worse and it’s critical that people within our communities take the right steps to keep themselves and families safe when venturing out, as well as their properties,” he said. “A new year brings new concerns and the time is now.” During the spring and early summer months, the transmission of Lyme disease is most commonly due to the bites of immature ticks called nymphs because they are less than 2 mm in size, comparable to a poppy seed. Thus, they are difficult to see and the bites are painless. In addition to their size, they typically attach to hard-to-see areas of the body such as the groin, armpits and scalp. Lyme disease is an acute inflammatory bacterial infection that has been nicknamed “The Great Imitator” because its symptoms are similar to that of many other diseases, affecting any organ of the body, including the brain and nervous system, joints and muscles, and heart. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are approximately 30,000 reported cases of Lyme disease in the United States each year but estimate almost 300,000 people are diagnosed annually. Studies show that 50 percent of ticks on the East End of Long Island are infected with the disease and that 70 percent of all people who are diagnosed with Lyme disease are bitten in their own yard. Remember these tips when checks for ticks: • Remember, ticks can be found anywhere. It’s important to use repellent when going outdoors and to check for ticks often. • Keep pets confined to your landscaped lawn and never allow them to enter the woods or woods edge. If you stopped your pet’s tick preventive over the winter, get it started again now. • Implement a professional rodent control program around your home to reduce the number of ticks on your property.
• Remind kids of the dangers of going into the woods and uncharted territory. Teach them how to check themselves, too. • Keep a tick removal kit ready so you are well-prepared if you do come across an embedded tick. • Keep your grass cut short and don’t over-water your plants and shrubs. Ticks are attracted to long grass and cool damp areas. • Ivy and other sorts of ground cover are
tick hot spots and should be avoided. • As part of your spring yard clean-up, eliminate tick habitat by raking and removing leaves that may have blown into yard edges and under shady vegetation • Spray monthly from April through October to control ticks on your property.

he Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation (LIAF) is extremely proud and honored to have been selected winner of the Innovation Award in the Nonprofit Sector of the Long Island Imagine Awards for 2018. The announcement was made during the ceremony at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. LIAF is thrilled and very thankful for the recognition earned for their Music & Memory program. The award, sponsored by Empire National Bank, acknowledges the adoption of new platforms that lead to a significant increase in an organization’s ability to meet its goals. LIAF became a Music & Memory Certified Care Organization in May 2017. The program is a research-based model that is in use by many elder care organizations nationwide and has shown to improve the quality of life for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Music & Memory provides participants with personalized music via digital technology, allowing them to reconnect with their surroundings through memories triggered by the music. Staff at LIAF has seen first-hand, the remarkable effects Music & Memory
has had for several participants in LIAF’s Social Adult Day Program. One of these participants is Tony, a Vietnam veteran who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about a decade ago. Edward McDermott, a program assistant at LIAF and the coordinator of the music program, uploaded about 40 songs to Tony’s iPod. Before he received his personal music setup, Tony slept most of the time; if awoken, he often became agitated. After donning his headphones, McDermott said of Tony, “He hums to any song and sometimes stands up and sways to the music.” Walter, another participant in Music & Memory, has been coming to LIAF’s Social Adult Day Program since 2015, where he would often refuse to eat, alternately arguing with the staff or unengaged in activities. Since using his headphones, Knudsen, says, “he’s much more agreeable now,” with everyone acknowledging how much more he participates in the program these days. LIAF staff are not the only ones seeing the positive difference the music program is making. Families and caregivers note—and are thrilled with—the changes as well. “At home, he’s way more pleasant,” said Walter’s daughter, Lada. “Before, he’d fight about eating, but the iPod is great. I put his headphones on him before he eats, and he settles right
down to his dinner.” Walter’s daughter and the LIAF staff also see his sense of humor becoming more apparent, and certain tunes really resonate with Walter. Upon learning Walter is a native of Ukraine and worked as a theater director, McDermott sought out specific music, finding 10 Ukrainian songs, including operas, and folk dance, that Walter particularly responds favorably to. Music is an integral component of LIAF’s programs. Aside from individualized playlists, LIAF provides the opportunity for all participants to benefit from live musical performances six days a week in the center’s large presentation room. Staff members report impressive changes, including singing and dancing, in participants during performances, especially those who do not otherwise interact much. When there are no scheduled live performances, a new, generously donated, player piano is used in conjunction with a SMART Board, which enables simultaneous playing and video performance. “The Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation is so thrilled that we were chosen this year to win the Imagine Award for Innovation. To be recognized for all the hard work we do on a daily basis is exciting,” said Tori Cohen, LIAF’s Executive Director. “LIAF is always striving to be on the cutting edge of programs that can help individuals find a life worth living after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.” She cited the philosophy for LIAF’s music program as, “focusing on who our participants are now—in the present moment, and who they are still capable of becoming—and how we can grow together.” Cohen also expressed her gratitude to McDermott, saying, “The cutting-edge Music & Memory program at LIAF would not be possible without our coordinator, Eddie McDermott, as he is the innovation behind it.” This year marks the sixth annual Imagine Awards. Founded by Ken Cerini, CPA, Managing Partner of Cerini & Associates, LLP in Bohemia, the Imagine Awards program was established to recognize and celebrate some of the best nonprofits on Long Island. According to Cerini, the awards ceremony shines “a light on the truly magical and selfless accomplishments that come from the more than 3,500 nonprofit agencies that call Long Island home.” LIAF wishes to thank all who participated in the public voting during the past few weeks, and to extend congratulations to the other 2018 winners.

Community Garden Comes To Roosevelt
N
othing makes people come together more than a garden in bloom. More than 30 volunteers gathered at 59 East Fulton Street to build what will become Roosevelt’s first community garden. Partners from Nassau County, MSC Industrial Supply, Strong Youth, the Roosevelt PTSA and the North Shore Land Alliance installed 34 raised beds with another 12 beds to follow shortly. In addition to traditional beds, the garden will feature children’s beds as well as special beds for the handicapped. The Garden, expected to open in early June, will be run by a steering committee of local organizations including nearby churches, schools, and senior citizens groups. Educational seminars will be held to teach new gardeners about planning their beds, vegetable gardening techniques, healthy eating and much more. “In neighboring communities like Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Manhattan, community gardens have been places where people of all ages and backgrounds come together in the simple shared experience of growing food. The Roosevelt Community Garden will provide this same benefit to our community,” said Andrea Millwood, Land Alliance Associate
Director of Communications. All community members are welcome to participate and invited to sign up for a bed. Opening day is tentatively set for Saturday, June 9. To learn more

A Dress For The Ages
BY JENNIFER FAUCI
I
JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
t is the prettiest dress a girl will ever wear. Some little girls have been dreaming of their wedding dress since they heard their first fairytale. Others experience a quieter, more intimate moment when they see themselves as a bride for the first time. Behind those personal moments are professionals who treat every day as a walk down the aisle. General manager RoseLynn Fiumara has been with Bridal Reflections since she was in eighth grade. The company celebrated
45 years of business in February, making Bridal Reflections one of the oldest names in the wedding industry. It is that milestone that qualifies Fiumara to know a thing or two about wedding dress designs, styles and what’s on trend. “People are starting to ask for satin again. For a long time everything was lace, tulle or net but we’re seeing satin come back,” said Fiumara of the once traditional material that has regained popularity. “We’re also seeing A-line after a long time of fit and flare, mermaid and trumpet looks. Long sleeves are also popular, even in the summer because girls are

looking for that Boho long sleeve very feminine, soft floral feel.” While the traditional styles seem to be making a comeback, Fiumara said that the biggest trend the industry has seen comes in the form of detachable wrap trains and overskirts, which many designers leave as an option. “It looks like a big full skirt and once you take off the outer layer, inside is something sexier with a slit or fit and flare,” said Fiumara, adding that the once preferred strapless neckline is slowly losing momentum. “It’s mostly sleeves, a deep v neck, illusion and very sexy fronts and backs that are open or sheer.” Bridal Reflections focuses on 15-20 different bridal designers across the three locations in Massapequa, Carle Place and Manhattan. Top designers of the moment are Calla Blanche, Galia Lahav and Eve of Milady. The Manhattan salon also receives requests for Australian designer Leah Da Gloria and her couture styles. “We are doing very nicely with Calla Blanche and we’re still doing really well with Galia Lahav, which we get asked for constantly,” said Fiumara of the fashion house’s two lines, Galia and Galia Lahav Couture in Manhattan. “We’ve always done well with Eve of Milady. Her look changes with the times and she nails it every season.” Fiumara says that while nine to 12 months before a wedding is the ideal time for a bride to order her dress, some designers can do quick deliveries. Bridal Reflections also has an online portal to see

what designers have in stock and what is available. “A lot of times, brides have a vision of what they want to look like, so we will always try on what they want, and then respectfully show them what we think might look even more flattering on their
body,” said Fiumara, noting that there is so much information at a bride’s disposal from magazines to social media that can be confusing and overwhelming. “The wedding industry is forever changing, but we meet a lot of nice people and families. We just started a mother/daughter blog on our website that has pictures of mothers and daughters who were
both our brides, which is really nice to see. We have the experience, we cater to different types of brides and we know them well.” Bridal Reflections Massapequa is located at 3 Broadway, Massapequa. For more information on hours and locations, call 516-795-2222 or visit www.bridalreflections.com.

Say ‘I Do’ With Your Dog There, Too BY JENNIFER FAUCI
Q A
How did you come up with this concept?
After a few of my walking and sitting clients asked me to help them out with having their dog at their wedding. The first couple asked me to pick their dog up at their home and bring her to the hotel. I stayed with her in the hotel room with the bride and her friends until it was time. The dog got walked down the aisle with someone and I was asked to drop her off at her boarding facility so they could go on their honeymoon. After a few of these, me being the entrepreneur I am, I thought I should offer this as a division of my business.
Q A
Do you have different packages and price points?
We really try and customize a package for the needs of the day. Some dogs can handle more than others in terms of crowds, being outside in heat, and other factors. It can be anywhere from $300 to $1,200 depending on the needs of the couple.
Q A
What services do you provide?
For Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding we provide day-of care. We can pick up and drop off your pet and we come armed with everything your dog will need from natural grain-free treats, water/ food bowls and squeaky toys for photos to wipes, a brush and poop bags. We also provide help with engagement and/or proposal photos. We provide GPS tracked walks, runs and pet sitting through Oh To Be A Dog.
Q A
Does Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding extend to other pets as well? I have never been asked to care for another type of pet, but, why not? I think I would draw
Q A
Why should pet parents look into this?
It’s a fun and stress free way to have your dog at one of the most important days in your life. Dogs are our family and more and more we want them to be with us as we experience life. We see dogs traveling more and people making life plans that include their dog. Weddings can be stressful for everyone involved, including family. Having someone dedicated to your pet, that is not a family member, is a sure-fire way to eliminate stress and allow everyone to have fun. Also, as professional pet care providers we know what dogs need in order to be safe and healthy. eddings are a year-round celebration, but the summer sees a surge in nuptials. While you prepare to say “I do” to your betrothed, don’t forget your four-legged friend, who loves you just as much. Shannon Sardella Arnold is the founder of Oh To Be A Dog & Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding, a company that offers pet care to dogs at weddings and photoshoots. The California native and animal lover, who now lives in Manhattan with her wife, started her business as a dog walking and pet sitting service back in 2010 in Pasadena, CA. The company grew to a second location in the San Fernando Valley recently and Arnold launched her Manhattan location this year.

Simply The Best
Manhasset salon celebrates milestone anniversary BY JENNIFER FAUCI
JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
“People will stare. Make it worth their while,” said Harry Winston, a man who knew how to make a woman sparkle. As one of the premier salons on Long Island, nuBest Salon and Spa does the same, but it is so much more than a place to get primped and pampered. It is a true lifestyle destination. When Michael Mazzei opened nuBest in 1973, he brought with him a passion for beauty and fashion. Now, 45 years later his son, Jamie, and nephews Vincent and Christian lead a team of more than 125 professionals, all of whom are an integral part of the family business that occupies 20,000 square feet of Manhasset real estate. “My father had previously owned a chain of salons, but he always admired this spot,” said Jamie Mazzei of the Manhasset building nuBest is housed in, which was formerly the old Best and Company department store. “His dream was to put everything under one roof, which is a little unorthodox to put all your eggs in one basket, but he did it anyway.” Mazzei, who serves as creative director and hair designer, along with his cousins are responsible for training staff and keeping the salon up to date. He came into the business in 1987 after going to school at Aveda
and then over to London to train at Vidal Sassoon. “My father shared his experiences with me and he was always very keen on staying current with the newest techniques,” said Mazzei, of his father, who is still very hands on and involved. Mazzei also noted that nuBest still holds classes every Tuesday night

for the staff, who never stop passing on education to grow the salon. “We decided to renovate the salon to what you see today and you really can spend the entire day here. There’s not a service or expert we don’t have or can’t provide.” What is unique about nuBest is that each staff member has a specialty, whether it be coloring or cutting hair. Michael’s philosophy has always been that it is “better to be a master of one thing than a jack of all trades.” Hair designers use top styling products from brands like Oribe, Kérastase and Celeb Luxury, a very innovative color maintenance product, which recently won an award in Italy. nuBest is an integral part of the Manhasset community especially when it comes to charity. Among many organizations and institutions, Mazzei said the salon is involved with the Tower Foundation, the Manhasset Coalition Against Breast Cancer, Northwell Transplant Center and partner with the Americana. Gloria Sombrotto has been the general manager of nuBest for 28 years and has seen the business grow first hand. More than just a salon and spa, nuBest offers laser treatments, micro abrasion, color treatments, and nail and makeup services. “Michael has always been involved in beauty and fashion and he feels fashion sets the trend for what happens in beauty and vice versa. As
the beauty trends change, so do our needs,” said Sombrotto. “Michael’s partner is a master colorist and they developed ARTec, the first ever color depositing shampoo (that business was sold to L’Oréal in 2002). “We’re constantly creating what’s next. We [nuBest] have a reputation in the industry and we strive to maintain that and always go above and beyond.” On June 23, nuBest officially celebrates its 45th anniversary. It is a family legacy that will continue to live on for years to come in the generations of Manhasset families and those who know that true beauty is an art that takes shape from the inside out. nuBest Salon and Spa is located at 1482 Northern Blvd., Manhasset. Thank You Cards: A Wedding Reflection LINDA J. WILLIAMS

the note but include both bride and groom’s name in the note.
he wedding is over, it was a beautiful day an everyone had a wonderful time. Most of all, people’s generosity was unbelievable and the gifts were beyond your expectations. So what is next on your agenda? One of the most important tasks of your wedding is sending out thank you cards. Relatives, friends and perhaps even people you barely know have taken time to choose what they thought would be the perfect gift for you on your wedding day. Even in this age of advanced technology, a handwritten thank you note is the standard expression of courtesy for this kindness that should not be forgotten or rushed. In the book Emily Post’s Etiquette, Manners For A New World by Peggy Post, Anna Post, Lizzie Post and Daniel Post Senning, the following tips are provided:
• Don’t take shortcuts. Store bought cards with pre-printed wording are not an appropriate substitute for a handwritten note. Make reference to the person and the gift in the note, perhaps indicating how you will use it.
• Keep a detailed record (handwritten or computer log) of each gift received and name of giver/givers (make sure to include full names and addresses).
• Send thank you notes to your attendants, people who entertain for you, people who house and entertain your guests, those who do special kindnesses for you (someone who donates their time to assist), suppliers and vendors.
• Respond in a timely manner. A handwritten thank you note should be sent within three months of receipt of each gift. Consider setting a daily goal or send thank you notes as gifts are received. Gifts that are mailed or shipped may be acknowledged with a phone call or email initially but a handwritten note must still be sent. • Share the responsibility. Both bride and groom can share in writing out the thank you notes. The person who knows the gift-giver best should write
• Type of stationary is key. Use standard one-sided cards or a single fold note card with matching envelopes. You can purchase these from the vendor that created your invitations or Crane’s stationery or Papyrus stationery are also good choices. • Signature: Bride signs her maiden name before the wedding; married name after the wedding. • Send a written thank you card to everyone who sends you a present (and/or attends the wedding), even if you thank them in person. This also includes those who give you money, charitable contributions, etc.
• Don’t wait for photos if this will delay sending the cards out. Whether the gift is large or small, all should be equally acknowledged with the same level of kindness and enthusiasm. Linda J. Wedding Vows: Our Partners Should Make Us Grow The Vows
Wedding season is upon us. June is the most popular month to get married, but the entire season is often filled with weekends jam-packed with wedded bliss. As I was in the process of getting a bridesmaid’s dress tailored last week, a friend called me on the phone to run her vows by me. In it, she used one of the phrases that is all too common, but very shortsighted. “My partner, (insert name), makes me complete.” I’ve heard this statement a countless number of times, often in wedding vows, but is this really what we want out of a relationship? Sure, I understand that it implies that a person and his/her partner fit together and become better off than when alone, but it also alludes to the idea that people need a partner to feel whole. If we are waiting for another to make us complete, what does this imply about the state we were in when single? While we want to be able to rely on our partners, it is important to be able to believe in our own inner strength. So, if we don’t need our partner to feel complete, then what is it that we want?
expand declines, because there is more overlap between the two people.
LOVE LESSONS
Self-expansion is often associated with greater relationship satisfaction. Ledbetter (2013) noted that self-expansion predicts how often couples will share problems with one another and display affection.
Marisa T. Cohen
Self-Expansion
Many people worry that once their lives become so entwined, while they benefit from the increased closeness, they lack the excitement they once experienced, as well as the opportunities for growth. In order to continue to expand as a result of your relationship, consider the following suggestions: 1. Take a class together and learn something new 2. Pick up a new hobby 3. Join a group to meet new potential friends—for those of you getting married, consider a newlyweds group 4. Travel and share new experiences with one another
What We Want A great way to think of the benefits we derive from having satisfying relationships with our partners involves using the self-expansion model. This model states that in order to feel fulfilled, our sense of self continues to expand and grow throughout our lives. One way to expand or grow involves our romantic relationships. Forming unions helps us grow, as we benefit from learning from a new person. If we are already in a relationship (I’m especially talking to those of you about to head down the aisle), we can grow as a result of trying new things with our partners. This may involve engaging in new activities. Not only do relationships lead to self-expansion, but expansion can in turn benefit our relationships.
Researchers Aron, Lewandowski, Mashek, and Aron (2013) note that there are two main components to self-expansion. First is the motivational principle, which is when we increase our ability to accomplish goals when with others. Second involves the inclusion-of-other-in-the-self principle, in which we benefit from the other person’s resources and perspectives. When we enter a new relationship, there are many opportunities to expand, which may be part of our initial subconscious attraction to the person. We benefit as a result of learning from our new partner, and we grow as a result of sharing in his/her ideas, interests, and resources. CELEBRATIONS WEDDING GUIDE • MAY 30 - JUNE 5, 2018
Bridesmaid Dress Trends BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA
Jenny Yoo Mira Strapless Floor-Length Dress in Cinnamon Rose $285
KDIJKSTRA@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
N
ow that wedding season is underway, certain styles have emerged as the most popular for bridesmaid dresses. This year, we are seeing a lot of texture, often in the form of lace, sequins, shirring, embroidery or sensible ruffles. Silhouettes are sophisticated, with tea-length dresses as common as floor-length dresses. Asymmetrical necklines remain popular, as do classic goddess-style gowns. Colors this year are all over the map and brides aren’t afraid of florals and prints for their bridesmaids. It’s up to the bride to decide if her bridesmaids should blend together in neutral tones or stand out in bright hues. While black and white never goes out of style, many brides are choosing toned down colors like mauve, dusty rose, lavender and champagne. The many dress choices out there can be narrowed down by the theme of the wedding, the personality of the couple and the preferences of the bridal party. Here are a few bridesmaid dresses, all available at Lord & Taylor, that are on trend this season.
Xscape One-Shoulder Embroidered Sheath Dress in Navy Gold $189
Two-tone embroidery enhances this asymmetrical dress with one long sleeve and a choker neckline. Brocade fabric is rich and lustrous and fits into any sophisticated wedding party.
The Mira dress by Jenny Yoo is pure elegance and universally flattering. It features a full-length circle skirt, a shirred strapless bodice and sweetheart neckline. A detachable chiffon sash can be worn in several ways, including draped around the shoulders (pictured) or tied around the waist. (Photo source: www.jennyyoo.com)
Laundry by Shelli Segal Pleated Open-Back Gown $295
Bridesmaids will make a dramatic entrance in this vibrant chiffon gown that drapes over the body in a Grecian-inspired pleated design. The plunging V neckline, open back and floor-sweeping hem will dazzle on the dance floor.
Xscape Floral Lace Sheath Dress in Fuschia Nude $229 Elaborate lace florals catch the eye on this curve-hugging dress by Xscape that works as well for the evening as it does for an afternoon garden wedding. (Photos courtesy of Lord & Taylor)
Adrianna Papell Sequin Lace Dress in Smoky Amethyst $189
This Adrianna Papell dress is a beautiful example of a textured bridesmaid dress. The sequin lace fabric in a muted purple tone combined with a boatneck and drop-waist skirt gives off a vintage vibe.
BCBG Max Azria Marquise Off-theShoulder Dress in Bare Pink $338 Gone are the days of puffy-sleeved bridesmaid dresses with out-of-control ruffles. This mini cocktail creation features a tiered ruffle skirt and an eye-catching décolletage.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). It all works together, the body mind and spirit. So don’t be surprised if you eat better and then do your best work; or if you love more and then feel physically stronger. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). There will be a reckoning involving tasks done and undone. You’ll try to get a realistic idea of what happened: where your projections were off; where they were on; what you were optimistic or pessimistic about. Your ability to be accountable to yourself will be the habit that takes you far.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’ll gather good information and raise important points. This you’ll do for your own selfish reasons: to feed your curiosity; to get the best outcome; to become more knowledgeable, effective, useful and powerful. You’ll score on all counts, with a bonus: Your work will turn out to be a generous act of respect and help. CANCER (June 22-July 22). It’s a quid pro quo situation between you and life. You give all to life; life gives all to you. The mutuality is beautiful. And as you well know, it’s not always this way. Life isn’t obligated to anyone. Fairness and reciprocity don’t have to be part of the deal. So times like this are something to enjoy and celebrate.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). This week, you’re organized and in the mood to plan. So many items live in your brain, waiting to be born into writing. Make your big list, then break it down; tear pieces off. When you finish a piece, document it and celebrate. Don’t go back to the master list right away, or life will begin to feel like a bottomless pit of work. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Does your future self approve of the action your current self is taking? The simple way to find out is just to ask. And if you haven’t developed a relationship with your future self, or even pictured this wise guide, it’s a fine week to start tapping into the wisdom and perspective that defies time and space. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Paper is your friend. Though many exchanges, studies and adventures will happen through a lit screen, whatever you do on paper this week will bring you good fortune. Try to work out your ideas and plans on paper. Paper and pen will help you concentrate, comprehend and express your truest self. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). No one is too old to make a new friend. This week, such a thing happens quite naturally and for the best reasons -- mutual appreciation and a similar manner of enjoying particular aspects of life. Fortifying ties will be made between people who don’t need each other at all; rather, they simply prefer one another. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). It will behoove you to surround yourself with people of good character this week. The true colors of others will be easiest to see in two circumstances: a pressurized situation with heightened stakes, or a situation in which a person is dealing with someone who can offer no obvious or known benefit. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Your goal is simple: to elevate the room and brighten people’s hearts. Achieving the goal... that’s less simple, if only because said “room” is populated by a diverse group, making it tricky to settle on one thing that will please the majority of them. Don’t overthink it. Go with what excites you and you’ll be contagious.
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
The small wins come one after another, adding up to a dispensation of considerable bounty in August. These prizes are direct results of your hard work, and they do not come from another person’s loss. Do not waste time on conflict. Be willing to compromise and battles will be quickly settled through diplomacy over the next three months. You’ll concentrate on making wondrous things happen for others, and you’ll get to be a part of those magical experiences, plus a few delightful surprises in 2019. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

The Man With The Golden Arm (1955) Visit us at LongIslandWeekly.com Another film to play with elements of film noir was The Man With The Golden Arm, which tells the story of a drug addict who cleans up in prison but struggles to readjust to the outside world. Sinatra garnered an Academy Award nomination for his lead role of Frankie Machine, the down-on-his-luck excon who easily falls back into the world of drugs and gambling. In this film, Sinatra shows real range with drug mania, post-clink depression and gut-wrenching withdrawal. It all comes to a head in the end when Frankie’s love meets her untimely demise and Sinatra’s character can do nothing but watch in dismay and walk away.

ost Italians are obsessed with the food of their homeland, so it should surprise precisely no one that Frank Sinatra loved the cuisine of Italia. The native son of Hoboken, NJ, and immigrant parents Natalina and Saverio, Sinatra enjoyed a well-publicized fixation with Italian fare— especially at the New York City institution Patsy’s. Fittingly located in the city’s Theater District (at 236 West 56th St. between Broadway and Eighth Avenue), Patsy’s serves food akin to a show-stopping swinging Sinatra number. Ol’ Blue Eyes reportedly frequented the restaurant quite often, entering through a special door to sit at a reserved table on the second floor. But it wasn’t just the food that lured Sinatra in, it was the loyalty. According to Patsy’s lore, Sinatra once made a solo reservation at Patsy’s on Thanksgiving, without realizing the restaurant was to be closed that day. Not wanting to turn Sinatra away, but also not wanting him to feel badly about the restaurant being open only for him, owner Patsy Scognamillo took the reservation and filled the restaurant with the staff’s families. It was a gesture that Sinatra didn’t learn about until years later. While gestures are nice, it’s the food that ensures restaurants are remembered. In 70 years of existence, Patsy’s has only been helmed by three head chefs—Pasquale “Patsy” Scognamillo, his son Joe Scognamillo and Joe’s son Sal Scognamillo, who has manned the kitchen for the past 25 years. That is a level of consistency unheard of in the New York City restaurant scene. Sinatra knew that he could count on that consistency no matter when or what year he popped into Patsy’s. On what would have been the crooner’s 102nd birthday last Dec. 12, Patsy’s posted on its Facebook page, “Frank would often have two servings of the Clams Posillipo followed by the Veal Milanese, which he wanted prepared extra-crisp. Other times he might have the Arugula Salad followed by the Fusilli with Garlic and Anchovies.” The restaurant even shared the recipe for the veal dish, reprinted here from Facebook:

Frank’s Veal Cutlets Milanese Serves 8 ½ small Italian stale baguette (about ½ pound) 2 Tbsp freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Pinch of oregano ¼ cup minced flat-leaf parsley 1 cup plus 3 Tbsp olive oil ¼ tsp salt ⅛ tsp freshly ground black pepper ½ cup all-purpose flour 2 large eggs, beaten 8 veal cutlets (about 1¼ pounds), pounded thin to slightly less than ¼ inch Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 lemon cut into 8 wedges
1. Break or cut the bread into large chunks and place in a food processor. Process until the bread is reduced to fine crumbs. Transfer the crumbs
to a large bowl and stir in the cheese, oregano and parsley. Gradually add 3 tablespoons of oil, stirring, until thoroughly combined. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Spread the flour on a large plate, place the eggs in a shallow bowl, and spread the seasoned bread crumbs on a second large plate. Coat each veal cutlet in the flour, then the beaten eggs, and then the bread crumbs, patting with the palm of your hand to ensure adhesion. 3. Heat 1 cup of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat (to a frying temperature of 350 F) and sauté the veal for 2 minutes. Turn and sauté for 1 additional minute. Do not crowd pan. If necessary, fry the cutlets in batches. Remove with a slotted spatula and drain on paper towels. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and serve with lemon wedges.

Crooner’s Classic Dozen BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

uring the 82 years that Frank Sinatra was drawing breath, his recording output was prolific, stretching from his 1946 debut, The Voice of Frank Sinatra right through 1994’s Duets II. With such a deep canon to troll through, these dozen albums were the goal due to space limitations.
Swing Easy! (Capitol) This 1954 release was his second for Capitol and first that found him collaborating with arranger Nelson Riddle. A fun upbeat outing featuring “All of Me,” “Just One Of Those Things” and “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams.” In the Wee, Small Hours of the Morning (Capitol) Considered by many to be the first concept record, this melancholy 1955 opus was rooted in Sinatra’s failed relationship with wife Ava Gardner. It yielded a number of the Chairman’s standards including “What Is This Thing Called Love?,” “Can’t We Be Friends” and the title cut. Come Fly With Me (Capitol) For this inaugural 1958 trip into the studio that Sinatra took with arranger Billy May, the idea for this material was to take the listener on a musical trip around the world. Mission accomplished via
a combination of lively upbeat numbers (“Isle of Capri,” the title cut) and lush ballads (“Blue Hawaii,” “Autumn in New York”). Songs For Swinging Lovers! (Capitol) Nelson Riddle and Sinatra served up a platter of up-tempo numbers for this 1956 release that features a raft of classic, reinterpreted pop standards including “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “You’re Getting To Be a Habit With Me,” “Pennies From Heaven” and “You Make Me Feel So Young.” Where Are You? (Capitol) Changing gears for his third 1957 album from Nelson Riddle to Gordon Jenkins, Sinatra went down the torch song path for his first stereo recording. Jenkins’ lush string arrangements were the perfect complement to classics like “I Cover the Waterfront,” “The Night We Called It a Day” and “Lonely Town.”

A Swingin’ Affair! (Capitol) A bit more forceful than Songs For Swinging Lovers!, Sinatra’s 12th album and second 1957 release are punctuated by Nelson Riddle’s brass-heavy arrangements. Highlights include “From This Moment On,” “No One Ever Tells You,” “The Lonesome Road” and “Night and Day.” Frank Sinatra Sings for Only The Lonely (Capitol) This 1958 collection found Sinatra switching from Gordon Jenkins (who was touring with Nat King Cole) and reuniting with Nelson Riddle for these down-in-the-mouth saloon songs that include classics “One For My Baby (And One More For the Road),” “Ebb Tide” and “Where or When.” No One Cares (Capitol) A dark enough record for Sinatra to refer to it as a collection of “suicide songs,” this 1959 sequel to Where Are You? is the second Gordon Jenkins
collaboration and it yielded a number of gems including “Stormy Weather,” “I’ll Never Smile Again,” “A Cottage For Sale” and “I Can’t Get Started.” Come Dance With Me! (Capitol) This 1959 Frank Sinatra/Billy May collaboration became Sinatra’s most successful album thanks to its hard-swinging approach and a raft of stellar songs including “Come Dance With Me,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Day In-Day Out” and “Baubles, Bangles & Beads.” Nice ‘n’ Easy (Capitol) In 1960, Sinatra went back into the studio with Nelson Riddle to take a crack at a number of songs he had sung earlier in his career and record them as mid-tempo ballads. The public ate it up thanks to numbers like the title cut, “I’ve Got a Crush On You,” “Embraceable You” and “Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Tread).”
29A
September of My Years (Reprise) Recorded in 1965 in the year of his 50th birthday, these 13 songs found Sinatra going back to the Gordon Jenkins well a fifth time for the first time since 1962’s All Alone. Sinatra wound up coming away with material based on a loose theme of aging, reflection and regret summed up by cuts like “It Was a Very Good Year,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “It Gets Lonely Early,” “September Song” and the title cut. Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (Reprise) Subtlety is the key to this 1967 release that found Sinatra recording a bona fide bossa nova album in collaboration with the genre’s leading composer. Jobim’s originals line up perfectly alongside the Great American Songbook standards “Change Partners,” “I Concentrate on You” and “Baubles, Bangles and Beads,” conducted and arranged by Claus Ogerman.

STYLE
Rat Pack Fashion Cufflinks
BY JENNIFER FAUCI
F
JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
rank Sinatra’s style was equally as impressive as his singing and acting credits. The crooner knew how to dress and carry himself with the utmost confidence and class as only a true gentleman could. Perhaps one of the best eras of men’s fashion, revamp your wardrobe with these pieces that demand attention and bring some sophistication to modern day attire.
These days, unless you are going to a black tie affair or appearing as the groom at your own wedding, cufflinks seem to be a thing of the past. Bring them back, but with a classic style. Stay away from the tacky cartoon shapes and bright colors and don’t go over the top with big statement pieces. Instead, opt for sleek shapes like a circle or square in stainless steel, silver, gold plated or rhodium finishes. These Gunmetal Square Tartan Cufflinks are available for $95 at www.cufflinks.com.
Tuxedo Sinatra has been quoted many times saying that for him, “a tuxedo is a way of life,” and that every man should have one. Not just a rental for a wedding or black tie affair, invest in a tuxedo that is well-suited and well-fitted to your body’s size, shape and height. Make sure it is an appropriate color (black is always a safe bet), and that you pair it with a vest over a cummerbund. Get this Hugo Boss Black TrimFit Tuxedo for $795 at Macy’s.
Hat Was it a fedora or a trilby? Either way, Frank Sinatra knew how to wear a hat and it was undoubtedly his most hallmark style. According to Sinatra, it takes two hands to put on a hat the right way: the back brim should be curled up, and the front tugged down to a couple of inches above the right brow. This Classico Wool Felt Fedora by brand Scala retails for $46 at Nordstrom.
Silk ties and pocket squares Ol’ Blue Eyes loved his ties. A fan of the conservative yet dapper silk tie, Sinatra also wore pocket squares with his suits as well (his favorite color was orange). The pocket square must be perfectly folded and should complement the tie it is paired with. Since today’s patterns are a bit more daring, it is OK to mix prints and solids, just keep it tasteful. Pictured, the Debonair Solid tie in Royal Blue ($19) and the Persian Manor pocket square ($10) are both available at www.tiebar.com.
