Eternal Con swoops into the Cradle of Aviation
2. Film Festival
Eternal Con kicks off with a film festival, where indie filmmakers will screen their fan films at the Cradle of Aviation Museum’s 350-seat IMAX Dome Theatre. Audience members will get the chance to interact with the filmmakers, who will present their twists on classic franchises such as Halloween, Jurassic Park and Star Wars.
1. Jedi Academy
One of Eternal Con’s biggest events is the children’s day on Sunday, which includes Jedi Academy. A group of Jedi will teach light saber techniques to kids 12 and under and all kids will walk away with a free light saber and certificate.
3. Car Show
See the Batmobile, Gotham Supercar and other vehicles from television and movies, as well as other military vehicles throughout the weekend in the Cradle’s parking lot.
4. Special Guests
5. Cosplay Parade
Dr. Who and Guardians of the Galaxy fans won’t want to miss the Karen Gillan panel and Trekkies will definitely want to be in the audience to hear from Brent Spiner. Elizabeth Henstridge, known for her starring role as Agent Simmons on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will do a Q&A, and attendees also have the chance to meet the original Power Rangers and voice stars from Sailor Moon.
Whether you want to don a costume and participate or just watch, the Cosplay parade is a highlight of Eternal Con every year. Participants usually go all out with their costumes and banners, flags, decorated vehicles and floats are all encouraged. The parade is Saturday at 10 a.m., and goes down Charles Lindbergh Boulevard. BOOK REVIEW
H
owie Rose’s foreword in Amazin’ Again by Greg W. Prince, immediately struck a chord with me. He applauded the talents of baseball beat writers, admiring their ability to present comprehensive, well-written accounts of baseball games under the constant pressure of looming deadlines. While I am not a professional writer, I do have a deadline, so here goes. Like Rose and Prince, I am a lifelong New York Mets fan. One of the undeniable ironies of the 2015 season is its mirror image of the iconic championship season of 1969—one that I have vivid memories of as a young Mets fan. The 2015 opening day opponents were the Washington Nationals (formerly the Montreal Expos). The 1969 opponents in the opener? The Expos. In September of ’69, Cardinals future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton, was dominating the Mets by setting a then-major league record 19 strikeouts, yet lost the game as Ron Swoboda (my personal Mets hero as a kid) proceeded to hit a pair of two-run homers to beat the Cards 4-3.
Prince takes us through the entire season, beginning with the final game of 2014, a season where the Mets came up short once again, left with that terrible feeling that we were “running in place and walking in circles,” but perhaps with a hint of progress. The chapters in the book are rolled out like the 2015 season itself, from “How We Got Here” to “How We Got Going” and “How We Got Transformed” and finally “How We Got Ourselves A Pennant.” Reading Amazin’ Again reminded me of those feelings of mid-season despair that had become all too familiar as a Mets fan; anger towards ownership, and just thinking we were doomed to never rise above mediocrity. We learned our captain David Wright had developed spinal stenosis, a debilitating condition that left huge question marks, and rookie pitching phenom Zack Wheeler was shut down and required Tommy John surgery. What next? Then, it began to happen. We see a young rookie pitcher and Mets fan from Long Island named
The New York Mets reignited its fan base with a playoff run that included a sweep of the Cubs in the NLCS. Steven Matz take the mound and dominate the Cincinnati Reds with his bat as well as his arm. Hope springs eternal at Citifield. While we didn’t win the World Series, we did make it there and I, for one, feel no shame in our performance. We posted our first winning record since 2008, first post-season appearance since 2006 and first league title since 2000. If you are a die-hard Mets fan, or know one, this book is a must-have as it offers a true fan’s perspective into the details we all experienced during that amazing season. Prince ends the book with “My gosh, that was fun.” Yes it was. Frank Virga is the president of Anton Media Group.

alifornia’s Napa Valley is as West Coast as it gets—with a tranquil pace, elegant surroundings and, of course, plenty of the finest wine. That warm and intoxicating lifestyle has taken root here in the east with the opening of Honig Grill in Woodbury. The restaurant delivers the Napa region’s fine wines, fresh ingredients and relaxed attitude in a casual setting perfect for romantic interludes, family dinners or business gatherings. And it’s all inspired by Michael Honig’s family of wine crafters at Honig Vineyard and Winery in Rutherford, CA, though the restaurant shares no affiliation with the vineyard beyond its name and the availability of numerous award-winning Honig wines.
For a Fun Summer, Join The Excitement!!!
Entering Honig Grill, lattice dividers separate the hostess station from the dining spaces, with a small area boasting a bar and leading to a patio, sitting adjacent to the larger dining area with filament bulb hanging lights providing a modern, smoky ambiance. There is also an upstairs dining area, complete with its own bar. When its time to eat, the stars of the appetizer menu include the Napa springs rolls and the artichoke and spinach dip. The springs rolls are warm, crisp and filled with pulled pork and cabbage and
served with a Fresno chili sauce that provides a decent kick of heat. The artichoke and spinach dip is a crowd pleaser with a mix of cheeses including Gruyere and served with house-made potato chips fresh from the fryer. Honig’s raw bar is a great addition to the dining scene, with east and west coast oysters and more. But perhaps the most surprising feature at Honig is its expertly crafted sushi menu. The restaurant’s sushi chef comes from New York City’s

DINING from page 6A renowned Rainbow Room, bringing with him high city standards at much more affordable prices. The Napa roll comes with glowing recommendations and features shrimp tempura topped with avocado, lobster meat and the chef’s special sauce. The entrées are impressive as well and, as with the rest of the menu, come with enthusiastic wine-pairing recommendations from the staff. Honig’s grilled swordfish was among this eater’s favorite bites in recent
memory—soft and supple, the fish is grilled to absolute perfection and is served with a sweet chili glaze and giant grilled asparagus. Another fresh catch, the branzino, is sautéed
lightly with Honig sauvignon blanc and delivers the intensely desired crisp skin. For meat eaters, the braised short ribs are pan roasted and fork tender, served with au jus and mashed potato. The Mongolian pork chop is another favorite, with sautéed greens and caramelized onions and apples. The bone-in rib steak is a mouth-watering, succulent dream—perfectly cooked, this 26-ounce slab is served simply with salt or with an array of sauce choices. For a taste of Napa Valley, along

Paul Rodgers’ Live Faves
he soulful growl Paul Rodgers possesses is one that generations of rock fans have heard via his work in Free and Bad Company that’s become omnipresent on classic rock formats across the country. The early 1990s and a stretch of the early 2000s also saw the British rocker singing as part of Queen + Paul Rodgers, recording solo projects paying homage to Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix and an ill-fated one-off project with Faces/Who drummer Kenny Jones called The Law (“The sound was really very detached—I didn’t feel like it had any soul whatsoever. That’s the long and short of that. It was an experience and I learned from that.”). Rodgers has reunited with Bad Company and is on the road with a line-up rounded out by fellow founding member Simon Kirke, Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson (Mick Ralphs is sitting this tour out), ex-Heart guitarist Howard Leese and bassist Todd Ronning (the latter two having been part of Rodgers’ solo band). There’s been plenty of action going on with Bad Company, starting with Rhino Records deciding to reissue Bad Company and Straight Shooter as deluxe editions last year along with the compilation Rock & Roll Fantasy: The Very Best of Bad Company. The
Bad Company circa 1975
most recent visit to the vault resulted in the recently released Live In Concert 1977 & 1979, a double-CD set featuring two-and-a-half hours of live music from shows in Houston and London. Rodgers and Bad Company are hitting the road with Joe Walsh on a co-headlining tour called “One Hell of a Night.” Being the consummate road warrior, here is a trio of songs Paul Rodgers has become rather fond of performing over the years. “Shooting Star” from 1975’s Straight Shooter “I like ‘Shooting Star’ because when I wrote the song, it kind of wrote itself. It’s based on a lot of the experiences that I had. I remember thinking when the song was percolating in my mind, I’d been thinking that so many people are dying and this is supposed to be the entertainment business. It’s not the war zone. Why is that? That’s when the song sprang into mind and it almost wrote itself. I love doing that one because it’s extended itself and the audience will sing along with it and that’s a beautiful thing. I like that.”
Paul Rodgers “Satisfaction Guaranteed” from 1985’s The Firm “I like ‘Satisfaction Guaranteed,’ the song I wrote with Jimmy [Page]. It just brings back great memories and I love to play it. It’s kind of a magic carpet ride. Whenever I do that song with my band, we take a trip into outer space. It’s amazing.”
connect with other people. It’s really about the songwriting and the bands go along with it. What I’ve seen throughout all the bands is the material—the songs and the music. I’m currently enjoying ‘Crazy Circles,’ because it’s my Bob Dylan song, you see. (laughs)”
“Crazy Circles” from 1979’s Desolation Angels “For me, the one continuum of making music with the different groups I’ve been in comes down to writing songs about the life you’re living. And songs with ideas that move you and hopefully, will
Bad Company will be appearing with Joe Walsh on June 14 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, 1000 Ocean Pkwy., Wantagh. Visit www. jonesbeach.com or call 800-7453000 for more information. To read a full feature on Bad Company, go to Page 16A.

basic and more advanced level. “There are so many activities that are indoors, and you’ve done them and know them. This is active, physical and outdoors,” said Anthony, a Long Island native. “People are always looking for something that’s fun and new and exciting.” Fun, new and exciting is a pretty succinct description of an experience at I.FLY. But if you’re like me,
The friendly, encouraging I.FLY team
doing flips and hanging upside down 20-feet above the ground can sound a little intimidating, especially if you have the upper body strength of an uncooked noodle. But according to Anthony, anyone willing to climb up the ladder can do trapeze. “If you have a desire or show interest and say you want to try, that’s the first step,” said Anthony. “If you can climb that ladder, our team is here to make it happen.” I took up Anthony’s challenge to see if I too, could become a trapeze master. I.FLY classes are small, with no more than 10 students in each workshop. The small classes allow each student to get focused attention from an instructor, who can be there to coach them through complicated flips, do a demonstration or, in my case, gently encourage me to keep going. Acrophobes will be glad to know that safety is paramount at I.FLY. While advanced flyers can fly free of a harness, Anthony said beginner flyers are nestled into four points of safety—a safety belt, in
safety lines, over a safety net and in the hands of watchful instructors. Flyers as young as age four can get on the trapeze and the oldest person to take on the challenge at I.FLY was an 87-year-old WWII veteran. I.FLY is not only challenging physically, but mentally, as it requires a ton of focus and concentration. But the feeling of doing a flip and flying through the air beats any day at the gym. The upbeat instructors are there to guide you every step of the way and they don’t give up on you. While I’m sure it would help, Anthony is right when he says you don’t need any prior athletic prowess to fly. All you need is a desire and the ability to take a leap of faith off the platform and into the air. But just a warning, trapeze can be mildly addicting, so you might just find yourself signing up for regular classes. Or just visiting your local playground. I.FLY has locations at Eisenhower Park and Long Beach. Find out more at www.iflytrapeze. com.

grew up close to a park, so I spent a good amount of my childhood building my reign as queen of the playground. The swings had their appeal and the slide was fun but one of my favorite memories was hanging upside down on the parallel bars with my best friend. We’d sit on the bars and then flip upside down, swinging from our knees and letting the blood rush to our head, laughing as we saw who could hang on the longest. Now as a 26-year-old, I think I’m obliged to let younger children have their turn on the bars, but a recent trip to I.FLY Trapeze took me back to those carefree days. I.FLY Trapeze allows people the chance to live out their highflying trapeze dreams under the supervision and tutelage of trained professionals. Started by brothers Anthony and Marco Rosamilia, I.FLY teaches individuals and groups how to fly trapeze, both on a
