Magic Moments At Westbury Music Fair BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
A
dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com
lthough the venue at 960 Brush Hollow Rd. is currently known as the NYCB Theatre at Westbury, to generations of music fans it will always be the Westbury Music Fair. In celebrating its 60th anniversary this year on June 18, there is a lot of history that’s taken place since partners Frank Ford, Lee Guber and Shelly Gross raised a blue-and-beige striped tent that was to be the Music Fair’s first incarnation.
Headliner Jack Benny on opening night at the Westbury Music Fair April 1966 relaunch.
Crosby, Nash & Garfunkel? Over the years, Crosby, Stills & Nash (but not Neil Young), has performed at Westbury under various iterations: CSN, Crosby-Nash, Stephen Stills as part of The Rides and both David Crosby (left) and Graham Nash (right) as solo acts. But it was a Crosby-Nash show on May 19,1991 that found Forest Hills native Art Garfunkel (above right) coming out to Westbury and helping the duo achieve three-part harmonies for a set list that included “Guinevere,” “Our House,” “Long Time Gone,” “Wooden Ships” and “Teach Your Children.”
From Tent To Brick And Mortar With Ford decided to pull out of his partnership with Guber and Gross, the duo converted their venue from being seasonal to a year-round venture by erecting a permanent structure on the site to replace the tent. Comedian Jack Benny with a young Wayne Newton as the opening act was the inaugural show. It coincided with theater employees striking for the right to unionize. Benny refused to cross the picket line and rode a borrowed scooter to the top of the hill and refused to go on until a union contract was drafted and signed. Management agreed and Benny performed.
Mourning For Martin Luther King, Jr.
Jon Bon Jovi was an honorary Juke when Southside Johnny played Westbury in summer 1990.
Busman’s Holiday With Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes Southside Johnny (Lyon) is one of those New Jersey heroes whose Asbury Jukes backup band has had more than 100 members move through its ranks. Lyon’s Jersey credentials are such he’s played in bands with Bruce Springsteen, Little Steven Van Zandt (then known as Miami) and numerous other E Streeters. So imagine the surprise Jukes fans had when they went to see Southside Johnny at Westbury Music Fair in the summer of 1990 and spotted a long-haired guy from Jersey playing guitar who turned out to be Jon Bon Jovi. It was a secret Music Fair employees were forbidden from sharing with the public.
Three days after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was murdered, piano-playing jazz vocalist Nina Simone played Westbury Music Fair on April 7, 1968. The whole program that night was dedicated to him and subsequently came out as a live album called ‘Nuff Said later that year. Only three of the 11 cuts were recorded in a studio with the remainder, including live performances of the civil rights song “Backlash Blues,” the Bee Gees “Please Read Me” and “Why? (The King of Love is Dead),” a song written by Simone bassist Gene Taylor, performed here for the first time.
When Cash Came To Town Country music has always found a place at Westbury, whether it was Garth Brooks opening for Kenny Rogers back during the latter’s Christmas 1989 show or Merle Haggard making his final Long Island appearance last year on June 26. Not unlike fellow Highwayman Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash played Westbury numerous times. In addition to performing there in 1977, 1981, 1993, 1995 and 1997, he used a shot taken by famous rock photographer Danny Clinch backstage at one of Cash’s ‘90s shows for the cover of his 2000 studio album American III: Solitary Man.

The Wonderful Wall At Westbury BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
I
dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com
n the world of kitchens, the one that you’ll find backstage at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury is fairly standard. The 10-by-12-square foot room has sinks, cupboards, shelves, a stove and a prep table. What elevates it beyond being a mere place to slice, dice and chop are walls festooned with the signatures of enough famous names for it to be rightfully considered its own entertainment hall of fame. NYCB Theatre at Westbury Marketing Director Dan Kellachan explains that it all started when the late Luther Vandross came to the back to express his gratitude for Chef Wendy Daly’s culinary wizardry. “Luther Vandross was here in May 2002. And he basically came back to the kitchen to thank the chef for cooking for him. He wanted to know if he could sign the wall and that was the first signature,” Kellachan recalled. “A couple of months later, Diana Ross was in the building and did the same thing. She came in and was thanking the chef for the hospitality. All of a sudden, she sees Luther Vandross’ signature, signs her name and puts the heart around the two names. That’s how it started. And then of course, everyone started signing all around it.” Before long, the one wall where this impromptu tradition began spread throughout the rest of the room. Walking around, you’ll see myriad
signatures—Linda Ronstadt, Brian Wilson, Don Rickles, Regis Philbin, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Steve Lawrence, Pat Cooper. Joan Rivers not only signed but added, “Always a pleasure.” Grand Funk Railroad’s Mark Farner threw a little humor in by signing off above the door frame with, “Bless those who pass beneath/Wish I still had my teeth.” George Thorogood exclaimed in June 2004, “It was a stone gas!” Garden City’s John Tesh gushed, “I came home. I’m coming back!! I love the Fair.” A
multitude of autographs are accompanied with huzzahs from numerous folks who sampled Daly’s food ranging from 2010 Last Comic Standing winner Felipe Esparza (“I love the vegan stuffed portobellos.”) and Hot Tuna’s Jack Casady (“What wonderful food. You have saved us. Thank you.”) to comedian Drew Carey signing his name and his 2005 weight of 244 pounds along with the message, “I’m fat enough. So thanks for nothing.” To read a full feature on the history of Westbury Music Fair, go to page 8A.

he NYCB Theatre at Westbury (or the Westbury Music Fair to purists), is the comfortable concert venue that Long Island audiences have utilized for an astonishing 60 years. The dining options surrounding the theater are as diverse as the performances through the years. smosco@antonmediagroup.com
Azerbaijan Grill 1610 Old Country Rd., Westbury www.azerbaijangrill.com
Gyrolicious 24A Jericho Tpke., Jericho www.gyroli.com
Serving authentic Persian and Turkish cuisine, Azerbaijan Grill is a quick 10 minute drive from the theater. Azerbaijan opened in 2005 and serves a Mediterranean menu that includes sambuse, a crispy dumpling stuffed with vegetables and chick peas; sigara borek, panfried phillo rolls stuffed with feta and herbs; an array of kebabs, lamb chops, and of course, the ubiquitous Persian rice. For a dynamic entrée, try the brook trout which is char broiled whole and butterflied, served with lemon-garlic sauce. The flame-kissed kebabs are a must, including the jujeh kebab, with cornish hen marinated with lemon and Iranian saffron.
A few storefronts down from Frank’s Steaks is Gyrolicious, a family eatery known for its recipes straight from grandma’s collection. The gyros are unequaled, with cuts of prime meat, spiced, stacked and sliced by master cooks and served in a pita or as a platter. Classics are available, including pasticcio with spaghetti and mince meat in tomato sauce with a top layer of ethereal cream, along with grilled octopus and spinach pie. The decadent bacon-wrapped chicken souvlaki provides a taste of something different, while the chicken lemon soup with orzo delivers warm comfort in a bowl. Don’t leave without sampling the baklava for dessert.
Cafe Baci 1636 Old Country Rd., Westbury www.cafebacirestaurant.com Cafe Baci’s unique facade has stood as a landmark at the corner of Old Country Road and Post Avenue for more than 25 years. And in that time, the Italian eatery has garnered a reputation as the perfect spot for a first date, a quick lunch or numerous special occasions. It’s also a great place for a pre-concert meal. All of the Italian favorites are here and the huge portions ensure gourmet leftovers for days. The Pollo “Baci” is a favorite and features chicken breast covered with melted Italian white cheeses. Eaters also recommend the Ravioli Riviera, stuffed with lobster in a pink cream champagne sauce with baby shrimp and diced garden vegetables. For dessert, save room for the tiramisu.
Frank’s Steaks 4 Jericho Tpke., Jericho www.frankssteaks.com
Pollos El Paisa 989 Old Country Rd., Westbury www.polloselpaisali.com
Zagat-rated for more than 20 years thanks to its artistry with primal cuts, Frank’s Steaks has established a reputation as the carnivore’s go-to spot. Large portions dot the menu, with the Romanian skirt steak, 44-ounce Porterhouse steak and 25-ounce bone-in strip steak slabbed as some of the best cuts money can buy. Beyond steak, Frank’s reels in quality seafood from the Fulton Fish Market, including salmon filet and tuna steak entrées. Add to that creamed spinach and a mountain of homemade mashed potatoes, Frank’s is a tremendous choice for concert night dinner.
Only five minutes from the theater via the Wantagh State Parkway, Pollos el Paisa is a family-style restaurant serving authentic Colombian dishes. Rows of glistening rotisserie chickens beckon to pollo fanatics, as the birds emit a mouthwatering aroma from this hidden gem eatery that has transformed into a destination. Other favorites include skirt steak, the jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce, fried whole red snapper and the chicharron, fried pork belly served as a crispy and fatty strip. On the sweet side, customers rave about the restaurant’s flan, which is light and creamy.

Shirt and tie combo The quintessential Father’s Day gift, every dad can always use a new shirt and tie. If bold colors are his thing, consider mixing fun prints and patterns. If your dad is more traditional in dress, a clean shirt in shades of blue with a matching tie is always a good choice. And if dad doesn’t need dress shirts and ties, consider a polo and some socks or get creative and personalize something. Websites like Zazzle, Personalization Mall and Custom Ink are great for that.

IT’S ALL IN THE FAMILY BY JOE SCOTCHIE

M
ajor league baseball scouts love recruiting the sons of former big leaguers. Such youngsters have spent their youth in and around ball parks. They have a feel for the game, plus there are the bloodlines. From the game’s beginnings, many a family has produced not one, but several stars. Think of the three DiMaggio brothers: Joe, Vince and Dominick (a popular ditty by Red Sox fans went, “Who’s better than his brother Joe?/Dom-i-nick Di-Maggio”). And who can forget the madcap brother act of Dizzy and Daffy Dean? Here are some of the many father-son combinations.
Felipe Alou and Moises Alou Felipe Alou played on San Francisco Giant powerhouses of the 1960s that featured two of his brothers: Mateo and Jesus. His son, Moises, had 372 career home runs and a .303 lifetime average. Felipe both played and managed for the Giants.
Ray Boone, Bob Boone, Aaron Boone and Bret Boone Descendants of Daniel Boone, here is a grandfather-father-son dynasty. Ray Boone was an All-Star for the Cleveland Indians. Bob Boone was the catcher for the 1980 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies. His two sons had stellar careers. Aaron Boone’s dramatic extra-inning home run off Tim Wakefield lifted the New York Yankees into the 2003 World Series. His older brother, Bret Boone, drove in 141 runs for the 1999 Seattle Mariners. All four Boones have been All-Stars, a feat that has not been achieved before or since.
Bobby Bonds and Barry Bonds
Ken Griffey, Jr. and Ken Griffey Here is the only instance of a father-son combination playing together on the same team (the 1989 Seattle Mariners). Ken Griffey (top right) was a star for the legendary “Big Red Machine” Cincinnati Reds of the 1970s. “Junior” surpassed the father, finishing with 630 career home runs and will enter Cooperstown this summer with the highest percentage of votes that any player has ever achieved.
Prince Fielder and Cecil Fielder The two Fielders have terrorized major league pitching for decades. Cecil (top right) gained national attention by hitting 51 home runs for the Detroit Tigers in the 1990 season. Not to be outdone, Prince clouted 50 for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007. This is the only father-son combo to have 50 round trippers each.

TOPPINGS
In the 1970s, Bobby Bonds was considered one the game’s top allaround stars, playing for the San Francisco Giants and later, the New York Yankees and California Angels. Barry, surpassed his father, winning the National League Most Valuable Player award seven times. Since retirement, steroid use accusations have dimmed his star considerably.
