JOHN CORBETT’S FIVE FAVORITE CONCERTS BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
I
DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
n the FX comedy series Sex&Drugs& Rock&Roll, Denis Leary’s Johnny Rock and John Corbett’s Flash are the Jagger/Richards of an early 1990s New York City rock band called The Heathens. The duo are reunited after two and a half decades apart when Rock’s long-lost vocalist daughter comes seeking him out while attempting to break into the music business. Corbett, who has been playing guitar since he was a teenager and has toured and recorded with his own band, is perfectly cast as this fictional axe slinger. The lifelong rock and roll fan shares the five most memorable concerts he’s attended. 1. Bob Seger/Ted Nugent
“It was my very first concert when I was 16, I saw Ted Nugent (left) open for Bob Seger (right) in my little town of Wheeling, WV, at the Capitol Music Hall. I remember the pungent aroma of marijuana for the first time. I was young and had never smoked it and I remember walking in thinking, ‘That’s cool incense that they’re burning.’ I didn’t understand theatrics and at the end of it, Nugent collapsed James Brownstyle after playing a red-hot solo and I was worried he had a stroke. Someone came out to help him up and he of course threw them off and started jamming again.”
2. Glen Campbell
(Danny Clinch/FX)
“I snuck into the Capitol Music Hall through a side entrance and the show was sold out. I saw a great band called Angel. Dude, it was such a great show. I was a big Kiss fan and I think they were on the same label. Angel was in all white and they had a magic act, where they would appear on stage. There were a lot of theatrics like Spinal Tap and I remember them getting in a box at the end and disappeared David Copperfield-style.”
4. Kansas
“I’m 16 and I get a job at the Capitol Music Hall guarding that same exit door that I snuck into a year or two earlier. I get there at one o’clock and the band rolls in. My boss tells me that they want me to hang with these guys and get them whatever they need. I’m 16 and I know stuff like ‘Dust in the Wind’ from the radio, but these dudes are not even 10 years older than me and they’re just like some of the cool dudes from my hometown that played guitar. Then these guys I’ve been hanging out with all afternoon go upstairs and hit the stage and become these music gods.”
5. Bruce Springsteen
“It’s about 1983 and my girlfriend got four front row tickets to Springsteen at the Universal Amphitheater. You were not allowed to take photographs but I brought in a 35-millimeter camera and snapped off some shots and got some really good photos. At that particular time, ‘Dancing In the Dark’ was out and as the show is getting ready to start, a security guard comes up to us and wanted to know if Bruce motioned to my girlfriend, would she be willing to get on stage and dance. And while she didn’t get picked, we were just sitting there wondering if she was going to wind up dancing with Bruce Springsteen in front of 100,000 people.” To read a full feature on John Corbett and Sex &Drugs&Rock&Roll, go to page 10A.

John Corbett as Flash
“I saw Glen Campbell around the ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ years and I went with my mom. We lived five blocks from the Capitol Music Hall and it’s this great ornate old theater that holds under 2,000 people. So we saw Glen Campbell and he had one of those white Elvis jumpsuits on with the big collar. It looked like it was made by the same guy and he had cool sideburns and hair. He played a cool Ovation and I always wanted one and he was just a great guitar player. My mom was super excited and she liked two guys—Elvis and Glen Campbell. That was a cool concert, just to be hanging out with my mom.”

BBQ from page 6A at the food store are best for massive cookouts when bulk is the name of the game. But if there is time, steer clear of that shortcut and attempt to grind your own burger. Buying a few pounds of rib-eye for grinding lessens the chance for nasty E.coli to take hold, while also ensuring that your hamburgers are the product of one or two cows, rather than an amalgamation of cattle. A professional grinding machine can cost hundreds of dollars, but a less expensive option is a grinder attachment to your standard mixer. These range anywhere from $50 to $130 and do the job just as well. For a full demonstration on

grinding your own meat for hamburgers, visit the barbecue wizards at www.weber.com. As for the bread cradling your weenies, sausages and patties, you need buns strong enough to hold up to the juice yet soft enough to yield lovingly to each bite. In this writer’s opinion, the boss bun for such a task is found at your local grocery store: Martin’s Potato Rolls. The soft, buttery texture provides a pleasant bite, while hardily soaking up the moist essence of any meat. Martin’s Potato Rolls also toast spectacularly on the grill without falling apart into a shredded bread mess. Keep it simple this summer, but don’t skimp on the outdoor flavor. smosco@antonmediagroup.com

A String Of Poloponies...That’s Polo Ponies
P
erhaps the best pop reference to polo came in 1956, in The Honeymooners “On Stage” episode (season 5, episode 31) when Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) and Ed Norton (Art Carney) are reading a script for a play they are rehearsing for. Norton: (reading his script) I don’t possess a mansion or a villa in France or a yacht or a string of poloponies. Ralph: (reading from the script) I’m glad to hear...[he stops suddenly then says] A string of poloponies? Where do you see that? Norton: (pointing) Right there, “a string of poloponies.” Ralph: That’s “a string of POLO PONIES!” The audience roars with laughter. Honeymooners fans still make
reference to that scene more than 60 years later, and in fact, the reference was recently overheard between two polo fans at the Bethpage polo fields during last weekend’s Meadowbrook Polo Club’s league tournament against 101 Polo Club. Played for more than 2,000 years, polo—the “Sport of Kings”—is one of the only sports that is celebrated and played worldwide and it has a rich history here on Long Island. The Meadowbrook Polo Club is the oldest continuously operating polo club in the United States, first established in 1881. Some people dispute a horseman’s athleticism. We’ve heard people question, “How can they be considered sportsmen?” “If you play golf, you are hitting a ball with a 40-inch club; it’s teed up for you and you’re standing still,” said Bob Ceparano, president of Polo at
the Park. “Now, think about this: you have four reins and a whip in one hand, a 1,000-pound horse underneath you, a mallet that’s more than 50-inches long; the ball’s travelling up to 120 mph, someone is running into you with another 1,000-pound animal, and your horse is not necessarily a willing participant.” The skill involved is not just hitting a polo ball and staying on a horse. In addition to owning the club and teaching the sport, Ceparano has played the sport for dozens of years. He took ownership of Bethpage Polo approximately six years ago. “This sport is about absolute control,” said Ceparano. “It’s the easiest sport to play, but the hardest sport to play well.” Polo at the Park, for 84 years, has been located at Bethpage State Park in Old Bethpage.
Games run on Sundays through Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. Visit www.bethpagepolo.com or call 516-500-7656 for tickets, sponsorship information and also theme days on the schedule.
