The Debut Of A Lifetime

Life imitates art for Paramour’s leading lady BY BETSY ABRAHAM

BABRAHAM@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

uby Lewis’ dreams are coming true. Not only is she making her Broadway debut with Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour, but she’s also starring as the show’s leading lady, Indigo James, a character she helped create and that is based partially on her. “I’m on cloud nine,” Lewis said. “This is my childhood dream.” Lewis, a sweet, wide-eyed girl from a small town in Kentucky, had always dreamed of originating a role on Broadway. She toured with shows like Grease and Jersey Boys, and was first introduced to producers from Cirque du Soleil Theatrical last summer while performing in For The Record: Baz in Las Vegas. The producers were so impressed with her, they invited her to audition for the part of the leading lady. Lewis also got to have a hand in the process of creating the character, a small-town singer who gets her big break after she’s discovered by a Hollywood director looking for his next big star. “We’re very similar in that we have big dreams and aspirations,” said Lewis of the similarities between herself and Indigo. “It’s like life imitating art in a way.” In the show, Lewis’ character finds herself in a love triangle, pulled between the pure-hearted composer Joey (played by Ryan Vona) and controlling Hollywood director AJ Golden (played by Jeremy Kushnier), who promises to make her a star. Not only does Paramour bring to life Lewis’ dreams of a Broadway debut in an original role, she also gets to relive

the glamorous days of cinema as the show is set in the “Golden Age of Hollywood.” “I grew up watching old Fred Astaire and Ginger Roberts movies.

I would have loved to be alive during that time because it’s so glamorous and wonderful,” Lewis said. “So for me, to live it every night and live a little piece of that

and feel so glamorous, it’s like the little girl in me freaks out.” Though she has spent years performing, both on stage and on TV, Broadway is a whole new world. Lewis said she loves performing every night, but there’s a lot more pressure and work involved with a show on the Great White Way. “Reaching your goals and seeing your dreams come true is so wonderful, but it’s not a cake walk,” Lewis said. “To carry a Broadway show is hard work and takes a lot of work. I’m really excited to do it.” Lewis is not only a talented actress, but a powerful vocalist, with a presence that fills up the Lyric Theatre. She shares the stage with some of Cirque du Soleil’s most gifted performers, who hail from 13 different countries. Every night she’s surrounded by jugglers, acrobats, gymnasts, contortionists, trampoline jumpers and other artists performing stunts that leave the audience, and Lewis herself, amazed. “It’s hard not to break character when I watch some of the acrobatics. They are all so disciplined and wonderful at what they do,” Lewis said. “It never gets old.” Find out our favorite acts from Paramour on page 4A.

High-flying Fun At Paramour BY BETSY ABRAHAM

C

BABRAHAM@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

irque du Soleil marks its first Broadway show with Paramour, which dazzles audiences with high-flying stunts, amazing acrobatics and death-defying feats. Here’s a look at some of the show’s best acts, which will leave audience members roaring with applause as they try to pick their jaws up off the floor.

1

Speakeasy—The creative and choreography teams of Paramour show off their chops early, during the first big dance scene of the show. With people juggling wine glasses, a woman balancing upside down on chairs and a man tap dancing on a piano while wearing rollerskates, it’s almost hard to know what to watch.

2

Andrew and Kevin Atherton—These world-renowned aerial strap artists are nothing short of remarkable as they soar dozens of feet above the air and over the audience, holding on to nothing more than long straps. At times, one brother will forgo the strap to balance on his twin, and the two are hands-down one of the best parts of the show.

3 4

Trampoline Artists—These talented acrobats do flips and somersaults, landing perfectly on their feet every time. Indigo’s Decision—Martin Charrat, Myriam Deraiche and Samuel William Charlton make balancing upside down on a trapeze look easy. Combining dance, acrobatics and gymnastics, these skilled performers portray the love triangle between the lead characters Indigo, AJ and Joey.

5

New York City Rooftops—All good chase scenes need a roof sequence and Paramour incorporates lots of trampolines for this one. The good and bad guys bounce, flip and jump around, holding fun poses throughout.

Another entry in the tender troupe is the baby back ribs—a real hands-on dish that is available in half and full racks. Of course, ask about Del Frisco’s signature prime, wet-aged steaks. Plenty of two-fisted sandwiches are available as well, including the Grille Prime Cheeseburger boasting double patties, crisp lettuce, fresh red onion, tomato and pickle, with a splash of Del Frisco’s “sloppy sauce.” The burger is also available in a spicy green chili

variety and stands alongside other sandwiches like the hand-crafted Farmers Market Veggie Burger, the Shaved Prime Steak Sandwich and the Chicken Avocado Wrap. When the meal ends, prepare for the happiest of endings with Del Frisco’s dessert menu. Do not miss out on the coconut cream pie or the butterscotch pudding jar—both are sweet revelations that will leave you happily popping a button or two. hat is it about Cheap Trick that’s allowed this quartet to endure four plus decades? The simple combination of hooks, harmonies and fat riffs that easily make them the greatest American power pop band still trodding the stage? Or the cartoonish approach to rock and roll that’s made them an influence on legions of younger acts? Whatever it is, the foursome of Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Dax Nielsen continue to be a vibrant and relevant beast of a band that hasn’t lost a step. One spin of Bang, Zoom, Crazy...Hello, the band’s new effort and 17th studio outing, proves DAVE GIL DE RUBIO that. Co-produced by longtime collaborator Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell, Fastball), these 11 songs snap, crackle...and yes, pop in a way that befits the band’s legacy. “Blood Red Lips” has an irresistible stomp to it that trades off between an infectious chorus and Zander’s snarling howl, while the cascading chords and thump of “No Direction Home” make for the perfect nexus of pop and rock. And if the melancholy sorrow, Beatle-esque harmonies and couplets like “I get so sad and lonely/It hurts just to walk in the park/It’s only when you’re gone/I’ve got to turn my radio on/ So sing me a song/You sing my blues around” that make up “Sing My Blues Away” don’t stir that part of your psyche where heartbreak and hope coexist, then you don’t have a soul. A reading of “The In Crowd” that’s far more sinister than Dobie Gray’s original version of this Billy Page classic is an added bonus. While these songs had their origins while Cheap Trick was sans a label deal, Scott Borchetta and Big Machine (home to Taylor Swift) came knocking with Raymond in tow, who just happened to be the label’s vice president of A&R. It’s a development Nielsen and his bandmates welcomed. “We started recording and we were basically doing it on our own. We didn’t have our own record deal and just wanted to record. Before you knew it, we had 30 songs,” Nielsen explained. “Right about that time, we got an offer to get signed by Scott Borchetta and Big Machine. We’d done it on our dime and all of a sudden, some of the pressure went

Rick Nielsen (near left) with one of his 400 to 500 guitars. Cheap Trick (bottom corner from left): Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Robin Zander

off once somebody wants to take responsibility for what we’re up to.” With the new album getting such a warm reception and the band getting its long-awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past April, 2016 has become the year of these Rockford, IL, natives. Like most bands, the Hall’s machinations weren’t really on their radar despite the opposite being the case for Cheap Trick’s devoted fanbase, who felt kudos were long overdue for these Midwestern stalwarts. And while there was slightly above-average kerfluffle going on around this year’s ceremony, for Nielsen and his crew, they couldn’t have been happier with how the night went. “It was a little frantic but it was all cool. It was a treat,” he said. “It was an honor rather than this being a lot of work or trouble or any of the excuses everyone else used.” Currently on the road with Heart and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts,

Cheap Trick is thrilled with the reaction they’re getting from a set packed with classics, a couple of new songs and a delivery that Nielsen describes as “Wham, bam, thank you ma’am.” One place Cheap Trick won’t be playing is the 2016 Republican National Convention that’s being held in Cleveland, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. While the band was offered $100,000 to plug in, Cheap Trick passed, a decision Nielsen has no regrets about. “We were made an offer, and we said no thank you. I think no matter what the political scene is, it’s probably not a good idea to be aligned with either party, either way,” he said. “[But] this party—forget it. I

Standup Paddleboarding To The Extreme BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

N

ot unlike writing or running, standup paddleboarding is the kind of solitary pursuit reliant on enormous mental discipline. Julieta “Jules” Gismondi should know. A guide at the Manhattan Kayak Company, Gismondi has participated in a number of long-distance endurance journeys. For an 11-day stretch last May, she became the first person to circumnavigate Long Island. As if this 300-mile endeavor wasn’t enough, she and fellow guide

Lou Anne Harris departed from Manhattan on Oct. 12 as part of a project they dubbed SUPergirls and used standup paddleboards to travel 1,500 miles all the way down to Key West and arrived on Feb. 12. Along the way, the duo raised more than $16,000 for two nonprofits: Mission Blue, Syliva Earle’s oceanic conservancy organization and First Descents, an organization that gives free outdoor adventure

trips to young people fighting cancer. The duo also collected data in the form of water quality tests, specifically measuring nitrate and phosphate levels on behalf of a few groups including the environmental nonprofit Riverkeeper. Inspired by the tales told by Manhattan Kayak co-founder Eric Stiller’s attempts to circumnavigate Australia by kayak, Gismondi was inspired to create her own stories via these trips, regardless of how far-fetched they may seem on paper. “If you set out to do something crazy, there will be people who will make sure you get through it,” she shared. So in the event you decide to attempt to circle Long Island by standup paddleboard, what might you need? Gismondi was kind enough to share the supplies that enabled her to do just that. Visit www.gofundme.com/ nyctomiabysup to find out more about contributing to Mission Blue and First Descents. Visit manhattankayak.com to find out more about kayaking and paddleboarding in Manhattan.
