Uncork The North Fork BY JENNIFER FAUCI

T

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

he North Fork of Long Island is chock full of many things, especially grapes. Once the first warm day of spring hits, vineyards across the island are populated with wine lovers, looking forward to tastings by the glass, pairing meats and cheeses and driving home with several bottles of grape goodness in the back seat. It’s a day out to relax, have fun with family and friends and enjoy the weather. But with so many wineries to choose from, how do you pick just one?

fall season. Favorite wines: riesling, a medium bodied blend; pinot grigio, perfectly crisp for a hot summer day and the Estate Reserve Viognier with unique notes of coconut, pineapple and peach blossoms.

Bedell Cellars

Perhaps one of the most popular wine destinations, Martha Clara Vineyards has something for everyone—animals and hayrides for the kids, food trucks for the trendy teen, a multitude of wine for adults and live music for all. Guests must buy a box of the vineyard’s oyster crackers which are more of a sweet cookie than a salty cracker. The beautiful tasting room and sitting area features exposed wooden beams and wall to wall windows letting in sunlight and fresh air. If you plan on stopping here, make sure you get in on the earlier side of the morning as bachelorette parties and birthdays tend to frequent Martha Clara from spring through the

All of the wines are made from sustainably grown grapes on some of the oldest grapevines in the country. Favorite wines: cabernet Franc, made with red fruits for a juicy deliciousness; chardonnay with a creamy texture and notes of green apple and sparkling rosé with guava and cranberry for a refreshing sip.

Pindar Vineyards 37645 Main Rd. (Route 25) Peconic, NY 11958 631-734-6200 www.pindar.net

Known for its lovely tasting room with stained glass windows and beautiful pick-your-own sunflower fields, Pindar Vineyards is a favorite stop of many on the wine trail. Tastings are highly recommended to get a feel for what you would like to order by the glass to take outside. Two large roof-covered decks draw crowds outside to enjoy some wine and food (outside food and drinks are allowed outside the tasting room, which is a huge hit with guests). Favorite wines: Summer blush and its unique strawberry flavor; Gewürztraminer dessert wine with sweet honeysuckle and tangerine and the newest release, a syrah that hits all the right notes.

A Family Affair At Baiting Hollow BY JENNIFER FAUCI

U

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

pon embarking on the Long Island Wine Trail, connoisseurs of the grape will find the first winery on Sound Avenue to be Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard. While many wine enthusiasts may have intentions of exploring several vineyards, one step into the quaint farmhouse will prove that is not necessary. Sharon Rubin Levine is one of the owners of Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue, a lovely farm house with a large front porch where guests can taste wines, relax with a glass or purchase wine and gifts to take home. The family-owned business began when Levine’s father, Sam Rubin, planted his own grapes, later growing the vineyard into an award-winning Long Island destination. “One of the things that sets us apart is our location,” said Levine, who lives in Commack. “We’re closer than any of the other vineyards.” Levine, along with her brother Richard Rubin, who serves as president, opened the vineyard’s tasting house in 2007. She works at Baiting Hollow full-time and divides that time between the vineyard and the horse rescue, which she began after receiving horrifying emails about horse slaughter. “In a country where we don’t consume

horse meat, about 150,000 horses per year are massacred to be delicacies in Europe. Richard, and I decided once we were up and running, we would take in a rescue horse,” said Levine. “Up popped a picture of a 1½-year-old filly in a kill pen and we had three hours to decide whether we would save her. That day we rescued five horses.” Levine does everything from running events to retail for the award-winning shop, along with her husband Steve, who is the general manager. As for being part of a family-owned vineyard, Levine doesn’t know any other way. “We’ve worked together for many years,” said Levine, adding that the family business before was Weight Watchers. “The weekend is when we do our business. We get very little time off, but we have a lot of family involvement.” Levine and her staff always encourage people to bring their families out for the day. “We’re open year round and we try to have a little something for everyone—live music, food, horse rides for the kids—it’s a fun day

out for people; so they can have a staycation,” she said. As for the wine, the vineyard does have a winemaker and several select and varietal wines to choose from including rosé, white and red wines. “We have two merlots; one of which is Sam’s Legacy, which is named for my father. It’s our reserve merlot made from his first acre of vines that he planted by himself.” Baiting Hollow also has two extremely popular dessert wines— Sweet Isis and Cheval Bleu—which have won gold medals. “Any dessert wine over a dessert is fantastic,” said Levine. “As for the horse wines, we have four varietal wines: Savannah, Mirage, Angel and Isis, that are named after four horses here. Those proceeds go towards the horse rescue, they sell well.” Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard is located at 2114 Sound Ave., Calverton. Mama’s Horiatiki salad continues the cold crispness, with tomato, cucumber, red onion, olives, wild oregano and feta triangles that add a beautifully nuanced, deep flavor to the salad. As for hot appetizers, Taverna 38’s biggest hits include the saganaki, spanakopita and kolokithokeftedes (zucchini fritters), but the musttry is the oxtapodi, which is tender grilled octopus with capers, red onion and a red wine vinaigrette. The octopus is perfect in every respect—tender with some char for wonderfully crunchy bits. The entrées are divided into From The Land, From the Sea and Yia Yia’s Kitchen, which consists of traditional favorites like mousaka and pastitsio. The “Land” menu includes steaks, burgers and lamb chops, but Taverna 38’s showstopper swims in the “Sea.” The whole grilled Branzino, flown in almost daily from Greece, is minimally treated for maximum flavor. Less is more with this dish, as the fish is grilled with some olive oil and little else. The white flesh is mild, yet compelling, while the skin’s contact with the grill transforms it into a crisp wonder with an intensity that lingers. For dessert, one can always count on the classic baklava and Taverna 38’s version is one of the best in recent memory. Go a step beyond and try the olive oil cake—a moist creation with homemade ice cream (all of Taverna 38’s ice creams are

THE SPORTS DESK

Surf2Live In Long Beach BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON

urfing is a lifestyle and learning how to surf is something that anyone can learn. Beginners learning how to surf have the option of a multitude of surf schools on Long Island. In my quest to learn how to surf, I travelled to Long Beach and met expert surfer Elliot Zuckerman, owner of Surf2Live. A native of Long Beach, he has been training individuals to surf for 40 years. Zuckerman was raised on the water; as soon as he could walk he was taught to surf. He is a man of many talents and certainly will keep you interested. Working in tandem with two other teaching surfers, the first step in learning how to surf is to learn the moves on land. The act of getting up on a board is one fluid movement, pushing up to a plank into a crouch position with feet facing forward on the board. Dexterity is key. Practicing on land several times helps you ingrain the motion in your head, memorizing the steps with your body. Next step, put it into action on the water. The great part about learning a new skill is that the instructor selects the equipment you use. Knowing nothing about surfing, I had no idea what size board to use or whether the size or type matters at all. The good part is the instructor knows and furnishes the student with exactly what is needed. “The boards you are riding are optimal for your weight, ability, conditions and surfing style. Having the best equipment possible is the cornerstone to maximizing your performance

and surfing potential, as well as developing confidence for all surfing conditions,” said Zuckerman. New surfers should start with a softboard. Theses boards are incredibly buoyant, stable and easy to ride. Wetsuits are available to use, which was especially useful given the water the day I had my lesson was a chilly 50 degrees. Water temperature means nothing to a surfer when they wear a wetsuit as long as they have good surf. To get out onto the water, the first move is to connect a tether to your foot so that the board is not lost when flipped. Climbing on the surf board, laying stomach-down, you begin to paddle out on the ocean to set up and catch your first wave. The first thing you are taught is to fall butt first into the water so that you don’t hurt yourself. Getting set to take your wave rehashed the one fluid movement you learned on land. This is challenging and once you get up on the board you start your next steps in learning how to direct your board to hopefully get you to the

“green room” or through a wave. Typically, the best surf is while there is a storm brewing or just after. Learning to surf is best in small groups and Zuckerman is the man to get you on a ride. For lessons at Surf2Live, call 516236-1070 or visit www.surf2livelb.com.
