See amazing acrobatics, magicians, jugglers, swashbuckling pirates and more. Play a game of skill or chance. igh and low, near and far, and hither and thither, entertainment of all sorts can be found at the Renaissance Faire. Gaiety and merriment abound around every corner. Though there are dozens of unique presentations, including stage shows and interactive events, here is a sampling of what you will find at the Ren Faire.
Forest Walk
Wander through the Enchanted Forest and discover the faeries of Sterlingshire. No two faeries are alike. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of the Faerie Queen.
Combat Chess
Besides the joust, combat chess is the most action-packed show. The greatest combatants of the shire cross blades and trade blows on a giant chess board, all for Her Majesty’s entertainment. Huzzah!
Maypole Peasant Dance
Enjoyable for adults and children, be part of the magic as shire residents dance the Maypole and sing traditional songs. Their enthusiasm is as infectious as the plague, but a lot more fun.
Ded Bob!
Rated PG-13, Bob and his faithful dummy, Sluj, perform a set of bawdy and profane corpse comedy. Audience members can expect to be pulled on stage to participate in the duo’s outrageous antics.
Washing Well Wenches
Deloris and Talley earn a living by cleaning laundry, only until they can
Gypsy Geoff attract a wealthy man, preferably one intoxicated enough not to notice they’re missing some teeth, and a few marbles. This naughty and tempestuous twosome will make your sides ache at this one-of-a-kind show.
Rotten Revenge
Best thicken your skin before playing this game of mockery and aspersions. Pelt oozing tomatoes at the
insult-hurling knave. $5 for 5 throws; $10 for 12 throws. No whiney babies allowed.

A highlight of the festival, Sky Kings Falconry presents an awe-inspiring birds-of-prey demonstration right above the audience. Witness the beauty of hawks, owls, falcons and vultures while learning about these majestic
Comedian, magician and fire manipulator Geoff Marsh entertains the masses in his amazing one-man circus show.
Music
There is no shortage of musicians in Sterlingshire. Look forward to a variety of musical genres including Celtic folk tunes, Irish harp, traditional English songs and ancient sea shanties. Visit www.longislandweekly.com for more photos of opening day of the Faire.

YE DINING
T
raveling through the Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo, NY, it is quickly apparent that providing period-specific cuisine was not a top priority. Revelers dined on foods like ye olde burrito—not quite a staple of a 17th century European menu. That’s not to say the food isn’t worth munching on. Chicken wings, turkey legs, the aforementioned burrito and more are all available and at a high quality. But those food items, while delicious and enjoyable, are misplaced in time at a Renaissance Faire. Even turkey legs, which one can imagine a European lord gorging upon at a comically long table, are anachronistic eats as the turkey is a New World bird. Examining authentic menus from that era, one can come to the conclusion that the Renaissance laid the groundwork for today’s foodie
culture. The wealthiest populations roasted-malted barley. The beverage enjoyed grand, multi-course meals was often consumed in place of of gut-busting proportions, featuring water, as drinking H2O back then hard-to-pronounce ingredients all was a surefire way to end up dead. exquisitely plated and Mead, a fermented honey ravenously devoured. beverage, was also available Renaissance eaters loved at the faire and though it their small birds—if it was likely available during flew, it was feasted upon. the Renaissance period, it Birds including blackbirds, is more closely associated woodcock, pheasants, with Norse mythology. plovers, thrushes, finches The Renaissance and and even herons were Medieval foodie website STEVE MOSCO consumed regularly. And www.godecookery.com of course, small mammals reveals historically accurate such as rabbits, squirrels and mice dishes and recipes. Some of the also scurried onto many dinner dishes named include A Shoulder plates. of Mutton with Oysters, Neats In terms of drinkables, the faire Tongues to Hash (a dish of cow featured plenty of beer—and this tongue), Carbonado Mutton, Cold makes sense as ale was consumed Calves Head, Dish of Marrow (small by the gallons in Renaissance pastries filled with bone marrow) Europe. Ale has been made for and Potage of Larks (bread pudding centuries using only water, yeast and with small game birds, beef tongue
A turkey leg misplaced in time and lamb broth). Sadly, none of the preceding items had its very own stand at Tuxedo’s Renaissance Faire. The capon was also a popular bird eaten during that time. For the unfamiliar, a capon is a cockerel or rooster that has been castrated to improve the quality of its flesh—and in some instances, is fattened by forced feeding. A popular dish was Capon Hashe, basically a stew of capon, ox tongue, chestnuts, eggs, bacon, wine and pistachios. he Renaissance Faire draws many fans for the sheer pleasure of donning a wench, fairy or royal costume and pretending to live life just for a day during ye olde Renaissance. While the faire isn’t as dedicated in its olde time cuisine and elements as one thinks it should be (Daenerys Targaryen of Game of Thrones is prancing around with baby dragons), it is still a jolly good time. And the souvenirs from the days of yore are great conversation pieces, too. Check out what you can buy at the artisan marketplace to bring back to the New World.

CHILDREN ARE THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL
Learning doesn’t have to be dull to be of value. It doesn’t have to be stressful to be outstanding. It does need to be relevant, engaging, joyful and challenging enough to bring learners to their own growing edges, wherever they may be. At Westbury Friends School, in addition to providing an intellectually challenging and engaging learning environment, the faculty takes a whole child approach that aims to inspire in each of their students a lifelong love of learning that goes beyond the acquisition of skills and information; students are taught to ask thoughtful questions in the spirit of
curiosity, intellectual integrity and creativity. They also learn to resolve conflicts peacefully through purposeful listening. Students explore and embrace cultural, religious, personal and economic diversity through studies of their local and global communities, and through the daily interactions with peers who are both similar and different from one another. Through active service learning experiences in their own communities and around the globe, students develop a sense of responsibility as stewards of the earth, and caring citizens of the world. Call us to arrange a tour. See the learning in action, feel the joy.

How high school should be. Founded in 1966, Holy Trinity is a co-educational, college preparatory Catholic high school. Holy Trinity is home to approximately 1000 students from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens and is accredited by the Middle States Association.
Quite popular at Bohemian weddings and Coachella these days, girls are all about the flower crown, which dates back to ancient Greece. A halo of flowers and sometimes ribbon were worn by maidens and the higher classes of royalty. Each flower has its own symbol (fertility, innocence, marriage) and the headpieces evoke a pastoral, Medieval and fairy-like sense of style. At the faire, flower crowns run from $22-$25 and come in a variety of colors. The flowers are fake, but look quite real, making for an ethereal headpiece.
Drinking horns
You can totally upgrade your dinnerware by purchasing mugs, cups and utensils, but most people go for the drinking horn. New vendor Valhalla Horns specializes in the beverage holder of choice and offers custom designs, ranging from 12 to 26 inches. The cuffs can be brown or black leather or fur and accented to the customer’s preference. Depending on the size, style and amount of detail, horns run from $25 to $65. Fill with mead, ale or any drink of your choice. (Photo by Valhalla Horns)

Baby dragons
OK, so they aren’t really baby dragons so much as they are little lizards held by the Mother of Dragons. But if you’re into all of that, take one of these little guys home as a pet. A real draw for kids, the lizards are at St. George’s Dragon Orphanage, where they await to be adopted and given a new name. The orphanage will also “babysit” the dragon until guests are ready to set off on their journey home. To learn more, visit www.mybabydragon.com.

O
ne of the main attractions at the New York Renaissance Faire is jousting—a competition that includes armored combatants on horseback charging at each other with lances. The first recorded mention of this particular combat exercise dates back to 1066. For the uninitiated, jousting is a form of competition between
two knights on horseback. Both participants gallop toward each other carrying long poles called lances, with which they try to knock each other off of their horses. Those unhorsed knights wind up continuing the fight with swords in a battle that is the equivalent of WWE in armor and chain mail. Roundtable Productions is the company hired to put on this show that was being debuted at the unveiling of the Ren Faire’s newly
constructed arena which features a bandstand that allows premium seating for guests at $10 a head, bleachers and the barrier in the middle that separates saddled combatants called a tilt. There is also a preliminary show of equestrian skill called a ring tilt, in which participants ride from one end of the arena to the other at a full gallop and attempt to insert their lances through small rings held by the bravest squires.
Queen Elizabeth I presides over the jousting match.
