I have purchased and sold several properties in the past, and I never realized the full power of a real estate agent until I worked with Jodi. She took the time to truly understand our requirements (and dreams) and worked with us to find the perfect property. – XX Jodi Cohen was our real estate agent for both the sale of our house and for the purchase of our new home {in Manhasset}. Her preparation for both transactions was incredibly thorough and very carefully researched and executed. he start of the third season for the FX horror series The Strain on Aug. 28 represents the latest twist on the vampire myth that represents pop culture’s long-running fascination with these blood suckers. Adapted from the trilogy of novels of the same name, The Strain was written by renowned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and noted crime fiction novelist Chuck Hogan. But unlike the romanticized version of Dracula that dates back to Bela Lugosi debuting the title character in talkies in 1931, Hogan said he and del Toro took this creature back to its more vile roots. “[Guillermo] wanted to take the vampire myth back to its origins where it’s a creature that is undead and lives in dirt and filth and feeds on people,” he explained. The vampire myth has never waned and in the world of entertainment, has cleaved more
The cast of The Strain to subtle sexuality in a Gothic wardrobe. More recent treatments included cult movies (Near Dark, Blacula), comics (Blade), novels (Salem’s Lot, Interview With a Vampire), big budget films (Fright Night, The Lost Boys), movie franchises (Underworld, From Dusk Till Dawn), television
series (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and even characters geared towards children (Sesame Street’s Count and cereal mascot Count Chocula). The following are some of the more recent incarnations that have really made the vampire craze spike significantly in recent years.

The Vampire Diaries (2009-present) Yet another television program based on a book series, this one was created by young adult fiction writer L.J. Smith. Based on a love triangle between teenager Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a 162-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley, right) and his older brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder), the series takes place in the fictional burg of Mystic Falls, VA. Having been renewed for an eighth season, this series has been the most-watched show on the CW and was only recently supplanted by Arrow. It has also spun-off a show called The Originals.

American horror series has been around long enough to have started out on The WB network and carried over to its current incarnation as The CW. Going into its 12th season, the show revolves around brothers Sam (Jared Padelecki, right) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), who hunt various occult beings including demons, witches and vampires. There was even a storyline where younger brother Sam allows his older sibling to be turned into a blood sucker.

The cast of Vampire Academy.
Vampire Academy (2014) Based on the six-book series written by American fantasy
author Richelle Mead, this $30 million film featured a cast of beautiful unknowns (Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Dominic Sherwood) alongside some more well-known supporting actors (Gabriel Byrne, Joely Richardson) who played half-human/half-vampires called Dhampirs that attended the St. Vladimir’s Academy boarding school. Despite the global appeal of the books, Vampire Academy wound up being a $15.4 million worldwide bomb.
True Blood (2008-2014) Based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels penned by New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris, this HBO series starred Anna Paquin’s Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress with telepathic powers who resided in the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Packed with racy and ribald storylines, these episodes featured extensive vampire sub-culture steeped in century-old back stories and the mingling in of otherworldly beings including werewolves, fairies and shapeshifters. Our heroine is caught between fanger paramours Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer, left) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).
Twilight (2008-2012) Young adult fiction writer Stephenie
Meyer provided the grist for a line of vampire romance novels that made the leap to the big screen and made household names out of Kristen Stewart (right) and Robert Pattinson (left). The amount of teenage angst and drama was derived by Stewart’s Isabella Swan moving in with her divorced dad, who lived in the small Washington Olympic Peninsula town of Forks and getting involved with the Cullen vampire clan and falling in love with Pattinson’s Edward. Its success yielded four film sequels.

Attention to detail is a priority at Roast, but it goes beyond sandwiches. The eatery’s salads are more than mere side dishes here, with standouts including the roasted pear, a crisp and lively salad with mesculan greens, cranberries, glazed walnuts, crumbled gorgonzola and raspberry vinaigrette, and the blackened shrimp cobb with romaine, bacon, cherry tomatoes, avocado, crispy onions, egg and ranch dressing. As for side dishes, must haves include sweet chili crispy Brussels sprouts, a dynamic take on vegetables with pickled carrots, radish, cilantro and peanuts; and sweet potato tots, with cinnamon and sugar. hen Star Trek was launched on Sept. 8, 1966, this Gene Roddenberry creation not only boldly went where no man (or woman) had gone before, but launched a science fiction franchise that is celebrating its golden anniversary this year. It not only
wound up birthing six television series (with a seventh, Discovery, set to debut in 2017), but also yielded 13 motion pictures, with the most recent being Beyond, the third installment of the original series reboot starring Chris Pine as the young James T. Kirk. The following are the Starship captains who helmed their own series and are also featured in the 2011 documentary The Captains.

Captain Kirk was technically the second captain who wound up taking the helm from Jeffrey Hunter’s Christopher Pike (above right) after the latter declined to shoot a second pilot. Into the breach stepped William Shatner, whose captain was a derring-do, swashbuckling maverick whose charisma and chance-taking was balanced out by a multi-racial crew of intelligent and fascinating characters with their own quirks and charm.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994)
Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his first officer Commander William Riker were calling the shots on the Enterprise-D, a century after Kirk and his crew had made their mark. As much as Kirk may have attacked issues by the seat of his pants, Stewart’s Picard was a far shrewder tactician and diplomat. And while the self-described “bald, middle-aged Englishman” may not have had as dashing a visage as his predecessor, Stewart’s Shakespearian-influenced delivery and no-nonsense approach to his character secured his position in the Star Trek canon.

Unlike his predecessors, Captain Benjamin Sisko oversaw Deep Space Nine (DS9), which was a space station and not a starship. Positioned above the planet Bajor, the DS9 platform winds up being in a strategically advantageous position due to its proximity to a stable wormhole. While Sisko wasn’t jetting around different quadrants, he still had to deal with the recently liberated populace, a rapidly encroaching enemy, taking on the religious role of being named an Emissary of Prophets and being a single parent.

ADVERTORIAL
How high school should be.
Star Trek: Voyager (1995–2001)
Captain Janeway was the first female captain to commandeer the helm of a Star Trek series. Janeway’s particular challenge was having her ship be marooned 70,000 light years from home and having to make a 70-year return trip. Unlike her male counterparts, Janeway is a scientist adamant about adhering to Star Fleet regulations and being unwilling to compromise her principles in this lawless corner of the galaxy, all the while leading her crew through a seven-decade journey home.
Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) Enterprise (2001–2005)
This prequel featured Bakula’s Jonathan Archer as the commander of the first starship Enterprise, a decade before the United Federation of Planets would come into existence, at which point he would later become president of that union. His evolution as a captain had him starting out cut from the same rule-breaking daredevil mode as Kirk, albeit far more inexperienced, and eventually making morally questionable decisions as a means to an end for human survival that included torture, murder and theft.

who tell me they hated me as a player, but love me on the radio. That’s the ultimate compliment.” Praise from the fans of his former team’s rival aside, DiPietro said he and Hahn welcome the callers’ perspective on the entire sports lineup, from hockey and baseball to basketball and football and everything in between. DiPietro said what separates Hahn & Humpty from talk shows on other stations is that “this isn’t some arrogant host talking at you.” “Some of the best shows start with topics that we didn’t plan out, but were brought up by a caller,” he said. “We’re not going to argue with you or insult you for having an opinion. We realize this is entertainment and if the hosts are having a good time, then the listeners are having a good time.” Hahn said the best compliment he’s gotten from listeners is that it feels like hanging out with friends, talking sports with
reporter’s needling. “There was one time after a rough game that he didn’t like a question and he became combative,” Hahn recalled. “He reacted poorly and I left badly about it. The next day I said, ‘Listen, if you don’t like a question from us, say, that’s an interesting way to put it.’” This advice helped lay the groundwork for DiPietro’s transition from stopping pucks on the ice to starting conversations on the radio. “I bring the locker room perspective—how athletes approach games and how athletes deal with the media,” said DiPietro. “And Alan brings the reporter’s take, which can be interesting.” Listen to all things New York sports on Hahn & Humpty on ESPN 98.7 FM, 12 to 3 p.m. MSG Network also broadcasts a “best of” compilation of the show Mondays through Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. through Sept. 22.

ports talk radio can be just as intense as the athletic action on the field, ice or court. Callers can wait for hours before they are summoned to spout their opinion and if they are lucky, they’ll get most of their thoughts out before the host hangs up on them. But a pair of commentators look to change the game of sports talk radio in New York, offering a place where fans can hang out and talk sports in an atmosphere reminiscent of a bar. The Hahn & Humpty midday show on ESPN 98.7, hosted by former sportswriter Alan Hahn and former New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro, combines Hahn’s analytic angle with the player perspective of former pro DiPietro. “Rick has something to say about everything,” Hahn said of DiPietro, who he first met when the goalie was drafted by the Islanders first overall at the NHL Draft in Calgary in 2000. “Rick does his homework. He doesn’t just show up and start talking.
