ittle Italy in lower Manhattan is a popular spot to visit year-round. But once a year in the beginning of fall, the streets of the historic neighborhood, which served as the first home for thousands of Italian immigrants, are filled with people eager to partake in Italian tradition, sample delicious traditional Italian food, parades and enjoy live music and a cannoli or three. This year, the feast runs from September 15-25, and it promises to be yet another jam-packed 11 days of fried dough, pasta, pizza and live music in the streets. The first feast occurred on Sept. 19, 1926 when newly arrived immigrants from Naples settled along Mulberry Street in Little Italy. They continued the tradition in Italy of celebrating the day when Saint Gennaro was martyred for faith. Since 1996, the feast has been presented by Figli di San Gennaro, Inc. (Children of San Gennaro), a nonprofit community organization dedicated to keeping alive the spirit and faith of the early Italian immigrants and to celebrate the Patron Saint of Naples. But it’s the religious procession and pomp and circumstance that people love to watch. The statue

Every year, the procession begins immediately following a celebratory mass held at the Most Precious Blood
Church the National Shrine of San Gennaro. Popular spots like Ferrara Bakery and Café, Lombardi’s, The Mulberry Project and dozens of other restaurants, old and new, make their mark on Little Italy. It is custom to walk off a large meal

with a cannoli, zeppole or gelato in hand, taking in the illuminated streets and walking past shops selling Italian goods. San Gennaro is not just a fun street festival that garners the attention of thousands of Americans. It is much more than that, and to those who want a lesson in culture and history, paired with a fun day in New York’s version of Italy, come hungry. It’s the closest to Italy you’ll get without a passport. The Feast of San Gennaro opens every day at 11:30 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Visit www.sangennaro.org for more information. Visit www.longislandweekly.com for more popular spots in Little Italy.

rom author Jan Moran comes The Winemakers, an epic romance novel about a young woman named Caterina, a family secret and a devastating truth that could destroy the man she loves. Caterina, heir of the Rosetta family’s American vineyard, travels to her family’s ancestral home in the Italian countryside where she learns of deeply buried family secrets. Many years ago, the Rosetta family’s hard-won dreams of staking their claim in the vineyards of California came to
fruition. Now high-spirited, passionate Caterina, who has inherited both her mother’s talent for crafting the finest wines and also her indomitable will, wants nothing more than to win her mother’s approval and work at her side. But that can never happen, because Caterina is keeping a secret that could ruin her: a daughter of her own fathered by the love of her life, who left her without explanation. Just as she feels she has nowhere to turn, Caterina discovers that she has inherited a vineyard in the Tuscan countryside in Italy from a grandmother she’s never heard of, and she seizes the chance to start a new life for herself and her child.

The Calandras brought their cheeses from Italy in the 1920s. The store, originally at 115th Street and 2nd Avenue, moved up to the Bronx’s Little Italy in the 1940s (2314 Arthur Ave.). Calandra’s Cheese Owner Tony Calandra said fresh ricotta, which is all-natural and has no preservatives, draws the crowd. The skills, recipes and quality of finished product have transfered

through several generations. One thing that can be said for the shop owners: the amount of pride in their store and their products is abundantly clear. “You see very few actual butcher shops anymore, especially ones that deal with the whole animal,” said Peter Servedio, co-owner of Peter’s Meat Market inside the Arthur Avenue Market (2344 Arthur Ave.).
“People come from all over for more than 45 years just for our veal top round and more than 15 kinds of fresh sausage, some from Italy.” Put Arthur Avenue on your itinerary, especially pairing it with a visit to the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Gardens or a game at Yankee Stadium, just blocks away from the bustling Belmont neighborhood.

Vince Lombardi
Yogi Berra “hi, Joe.” The incredible 1921 to 1964 Yankee dynasty included Lazzeri, Berra and DiMaggio, but also Frank Crosetti, Phil Rizzuto, Vic Raschi, Marius Russo, Billy Martin and Joe Pepitone. Let’s not overlook the National League. The Brooklyn Dodgers featured 1941 MVP Dolph Camilli and 1953 batting champ Carl Furillo. Sal Maglie helped to pitch the legendary 1951 New York Giants to their stunning pennant win over the Dodgers. Three years later, Johnny Antonelli won 21 games as the Giants won the World Series. The Mets had
Bobby Valentine, who piloted the Amazins’ to a pennant in 2000, a squad that included Brooklyn native Johnny Franco, Matt Franco, Robin Ventura and Mike Piazza. In pro football, one man, Brooklyn native Vince Lombardi, set the standard for excellence during the Golden Age of the ‘60s. Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers methodically rolled over the opposition, winning the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968. In honor of Lombardi, the winning trophy for each Super Bowl game is now named for the man. Finally, to the world of
prizefighting, where the quest for excellence reached new heights in the career of Rocky Marciano, the only undefeated heavyweight champ in boxing history. Another Rocky, Graziano by last name, battled his way out of the Lower East Side to become a middleweight champion. Carmen Basilio was both a welterweight and middleweight champ. And no one can forget Jake LaMotta, the Raging Bull from the Bronx, a middleweight champion and also the subject of a classic film. We started with Yogi and let’s end with him, too. Ralph Houk, the Yankee general manager, fired Yogi the day after the Yanks lost the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964. The Yankees then went 11 seasons without a pennant. Call it the Curse of Yogi. In 1976, Yankee skipper Billy Martin brought Yogi back as a coach. The Bombers proceeded to win five division titles in the next six years, plus four pennants and two World Series wins. Billy knew where to go to find a winner.

ne word describes the ItalianAmerican experience in American sports: Winners. Sticking to just New York City teams is enough for major league baseball. In fact, with Tony Lazzeri on one end and Joe Torre on another, the histories of the New York Yankees and Italian-Americans in sports are virtually intertwined. The sportswriter Allen Barra recently hailed Yogi Berra as the greatest team player in baseball history. Yogi played, coached or managed in 75 World Series games. A three-time Most Valuable Player, Yogi played on 14 pennant-winning teams and 10 World Series champions. He later managed the Yankees to the World Series in 1964 and did the same for the New York Mets in 1973. And when the Mets won the World Series in 1986, they first had to go through the Houston Astros. And who was in the dugout as a coach for Houston? The ubiquitous Berra himself. Barra’s claim is controversial in that it places Berra ahead of his teammate, Joe DiMaggio. Along with Bill Russell in professional basketball, DiMaggio’s career as a winner represents the closest thing to perfection in this sub-lunar sphere. In his 13 seasons, the Yankees won 10 pennants, and nine World Series. In DiMaggio’s first four seasons, the Yankees won four consecutive World Series. Whenever Babe Ruth used to visit the Yankee locker room, he always addressed the players as “kid.” With DiMaggio, it was different. The Bambino acknowledged him with a
