The Cast Of Bob‛s Burgers : Five Searing Questions ob’s Burgers returns with its seventh season Sept. 25 on FOX. To gear up for the premiere, the main cast members sat down with Long Island Weekly to answer some essential questions. —By Steve Mosco

How does it feel knowing that you get to explore your character for at least two more seasons? Dan Mintz (Tina): It feels amazing because this is the best job ever, and I want to go on as long as possible. I would have thought after so many episodes the writers would be running out of new ideas for Tina, but they somehow keep coming up with new layers to her character and I’m excited to see where she goes next. Kristen Schaal (Louise): It’s a huge relief! After being Louise for this long I’m quite fond of her. It’s nice to know that she’s not going away any time soon.

John Roberts (Linda): Exciting, and we were all very grateful and happy to get the news we were renewed. We’re always biting our nails each season waiting to be picked up. All the scripts are excellent, and we aren’t even close to running out of material. For Linda, they just keep giving me great stuff. I could do this for the rest of my life and be happy. Larry Murphy (Teddy): For Teddy, there is a lot that is still undiscovered and every so often, a little of his back story is revealed. The character is solid, and the writers add elements that are just hilarious.

H. Jon Benjamin (Bob): “Exploring Bob” sounds like a 1970s pornographic movie title. I think the show is in a really confident stage now. It feels like the writers write very fluidly for the characters. Hopefully, it can live on for a long time. What can viewers expect from your character in season 7? Eugene Mirman (Gene): The same rambunctious fun you’ve always expected. He grows and is full of boundless love. That is what is great about Gene—he grows but doesn’t age. Mintz: Among other things, Tina joins the debate team, goes to

H. Jon Benjamin as Bob Belcher and Kristen Schaal as Louise Belcher

school as a robot avatar when she hurts her ankle, and gets addicted to cat food. Roberts: There’s one episode called “Grand Mama Pest Hotel” where Linda and Tina go on a trip and Linda’s rebellious teenage side comes out while Tina is being the more mature one. Some fun Linda hijinks in that one. Benjamin: Bob is heavily medicated again on Halloween due to a leg injury, and Teddy has to help run the restaurant when Linda goes away to deal with Louise getting in trouble at school.

There are people out there with Bob’s Burgers tattoos. Why do you think the show is so popular? Mirman: It might be as simple as good writing. And with the main cast, we’ve known each other for like 10 or 15 years and knowing each other for so long adds a lot to it.

Dan Mintz as Tina Belcher and Larry Murphy as Teddy (top right)

Mintz: I think the show just feels very real in a way that’s rare for even live action TV. When you first watch it, it seems completely different from anything you’ve ever seen, yet somehow very familiar. Murphy: I saw a Teddy tattoo and I couldn’t believe it. I think at first the audience reaction to the show was a little cool—they didn’t know the characters or what we were even doing. But it has been a slow build and now there’s a huge payoff. Benjamin: Not entirely sure, but I think mainly because the characters are relatable and enjoy each other, and that’s fun to watch. Despite being a cartoon, they are a reasonably real family. Schaal: I like that people relate to Louise on such a deep level, because she rules. She should be permanent on their skin and with them ‘til they’re old! When you first recorded your voice overs for the pilot (“Human Flesh”), did you ever think the show would turn into such a fan favorite? Mirman: It’s very fulfilling

looking back on it because Loren Bouchard [creator] let us all put our own spin on the characters. Schaal: I didn’t think that it would be an actual show. We were just doing a presentation for FOX. It was just me and my stand-up buddies fooling around in a sound booth before we all grabbed a beer. I didn’t even tell my agents! Roberts: It was just another audition. We got called in as a group of comics who loved working with each other. Benjamin: I remember being really enamored with all the cast and the casting choices that Loren and Jim [Dauterive] made. Besides your character, which character’s story are you most interested in following and why? Mirman: I adore Teddy. His attitude is extremely positive and fatalistic at the same time. He’s pessimistic and full of joy. Mintz: Bob, because I’m a dad now, so I can see what my life will be like in eight years. Schaal: Regular Sized Rudy. He’s just so darn wonderful! Roberts: It rotates a lot, but I love Tina. This past season she had a long French kiss with some kid and it was just so gnarly and hysterical. Murphy: I tend to lean towards Linda. There is so much going on with her and I feel like she has a life outside of the restaurant that we don’t even really know about. Benjamin: Marshmallow. I think she should have her own show.

“For me, practicing real estate gives me a daily excuse to do what I love: surround myself with an ever-evolving cast of wonderful people; get a voyeur’s view of fabulous interiors; tiptoe through exquisite gardens; see some really terrific architecture, art and design up close and personal. Combine that with creating marketing strategies, negotiating and matching people with properties and I can’t help but feel very lucky to have the best job in the world!”

Bareburger’s Supreme burger and the Chunkay Monkae sundae (right)

BURGER from page 6A hormone-free. A major standout is the Wiki Wiki burger, which sees a wild boar patty draped in gouda with duck bacon, chickpea onions and grilled pineapple on a brioche bun. The wild boar boasts some breakfast sausage qualities in all the right spots, but is hearty like a classic burger. Gouda, the perfect melty cheese, brings rich smokiness, while the duck bacon is a shockingly unctuous twist on the already amazing pig variety. The boar also stars in the Hog Wild burger, with pimento cheese and a fried egg. Another protein option at Bareburger is elk, which is the meat of choice in the Grindhouse and Blue Elk burgers. The Blue Elk is a favorite, with Amish blue cheese, country bacon, stout onions and tomato fig jam on a sprout bun. The elk is surprisingly rich and juicy, but the tomato fig jam is the surprising touch, bringing a mild sweetness and cutting through the strong blue cheese. Another burger that deserves top billing is the Fire Quacker, boasting a duck patty with pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapeños and habanero mayo. For anyone looking for beef, take your pick from the Buckaroo,

35A

Supreme and The Standard. The Buckaroo stands out as it adds brisket to its toppings of aged cheddar, wild mushroom and smoke sauce. There’s also the option of customizing a burger with the “Be My Burger” section of the menu. This

seven-step process allows eaters to choose a patty from any of the aforementioned proteins, as well as grilled lemon chicken, sweet potato and wild rice, black bean and farmers quinoa. Then you choose a bun, cheese, veggies, sauce and spread.

Beyond burgers, Bareburger has hearty crops and greens, shareable sides like onion rings, fries, an array of pickles and slaws, crispy Brussels sprouts and sliders. Bareburger also offers absolutely killer chicken sandwiches like Hot Honey Chicken, featuring buttermilk fried chicken with Brussels sprout slaw, grilled pineapple, crispy lotus root and hot honey. Thought it might be difficult, it is worth saving room for dessert. Try the Chunkay Monkae, a sundae with vanilla ice cream, bananas flambé, bourbon caramel, whipped cream and candied pecans. The Plainview Bareburger is located at 399 South Oyster Bay Rd. 516-9323500. For a complete list of locations, visit www.bareburger.com. smosco@antonmediagroup.com

Throwing it back to the days of base ball in the 19th century. (Photos by Mutual Base Ball Club)

Old Time Base Ball At Old Bethpage BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

H

ave you ever wondered what baseball was like in the old days? Old Bethpage Restoration gives fans of America’s favorite pastime the chance to see what base ball (spelled that way in the 1800s) was like back then as teams from the 1864 League play the game following the rules and customs of the 19th century in vintage uniforms. The original Mutual Base Ball Club began in 1857 and was named after Mutual Hook and Ladder Company Number 1. Players consisted of city employees who traveled to Brooklyn, Hoboken, Hartford and Boston for games. Some of the rules back in 1864 included pitching in an underhand manner delivered below the waist; home plate was round; foul balls were not strikes, the striker (batter) would receive a warning before the umpire would call fair pitches and then he would receive three strikes and any reachable

ball was a good one. Also, uniforms consisted of a hat, long pants and a bib type shirt. Not without the issues of modern day baseball, the Mutuals also faced expulsions, debated championship wins, triple plays, loose cannon players and betting money on the game. The original club lasted until 1876, with the Mutuals finishing their season 21-35. As for the 2016 team, which represents the 1870 National Champion Mutuals by wearing replicas of the actual uniforms worn by that team, the goal is to educate the public about the roots of old time base ball. The current club was established in 1999 as an extension of the Old Time Base Ball program at the restoration. The Mutuals travel across the country, playing established teams as well as instructing new players on how the game was played. They play home games at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The Mutuals next home game will be on October 15, where the team will play at the MAVBBL Festival. For more information and a schedule on upcoming games for Old Time Base Ball, visit www.nymutuals.com.
