Eric McCormack unlocks his id on Will & Grace
By Betsy Abraham babraham@antonmediagroup.com
W
hen Eric McCormack got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this month, it seemed only appropriate that it found a home next to Debra Messing’s. The two not only play roommates on Will & Grace, but have made their way into the homes of millions of fans worldwide as the show’s titular characters. Though the cast said “Goodnight Gracie” in 2006, they reprised their roles for the first time in a decade for an online video urging Americans to vote in the 2016 presidential election. Released amidst announcements of TV revivals of other popular shows, the 10-minute video lit a spark and in 2017, McCormack and Messing joined Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally back on the set of Will & Grace for a ninth season. “Even though 11 years had gone by, the comment I hear across the board is people say ‘it’s like you guys never
stopped. You didn’t miss a beat,’” said McCormack. “We could have easily decided to make a different show, but what thrilled people about the election video we made is that it looked and sounded the same. That’s a tone we never want to lose. You can never underestimate how much people want the familiarity and how much they want a show that still looks like their show.” As Will & Grace heads into its 10th season on Thursday, Oct. 4 (with an 11th season already guaranteed), the show has found a steady groove of doing what it does best—tackling societal and relationship issues in a tongue-in-cheek way while giving its characters room to make mistakes, fail miserably and lean on each other as they try to find happiness. Even if you haven’t watched Will & Grace, you’ve probably been affected by it: the show is widely recognized as the first to put two gay characters (McCormack’s Will and Hayes’ Jack) in the forefront, introducing TV viewers to a segment
of the population that up until then, had been largely ignored. While that’s changed now, with shows like Queer Eye, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and others, Will & Grace has still carved a unique niche for itself, specifically on network television. “Gay culture and LGBTQ themes have come a thousand miles since [the original show], but we’re almost more unique than we used to be. We used to be one of many sitcoms, now there’s very few shows like this,” said McCormack, adding that while network television prohibits actors from certain explicit language, their innuendos could surely make a nun blush. “The kind of joke we can tell at 9 on a Thursday just lands differently than…at HBO or Netflix. You have to go 10 times riskier on streaming than you can on television. We had to find clever ways to get past the sensors. We explore politics and sexuality and the culture right now with that eye, and still surprise people.” Not only are writers tasked with getting around Standards and

Practices, but they also have to find ways to have four very different characters grow as individuals, while remaining in each other’s lives. “You have to put new spins on the wheel but you can’t reinvent it. You never want to completely repeat yourself, but the writers are aware if we get into a situation that has to do with their jobs or love life or relationship with each other, there has to be some new turn or freshness. It’s walking that fine line between familiarity of these characters and the situations and what new we can bring in 2018,” McCormack said. The upcoming season finds Hayes’ character heading for the altar, Mullally’s getting divorced and Will & Grace faced with the prospect of become siblings as their single parents get engaged. And while there are plenty of relationship issues woven throughout the season, getting Will matched up isn’t the show’s be-all-end-all. “The essence of the show is us struggling and looking for something. I like that Will has loved and lost and is okay with himself. He’s comfortable in his own skin,” McCormack said. “We don’t play up his loneliness too much. The show’s creator wants him to be confident in being a successful man in a big city, and not need somebody to define him.” McCormack describes Will as his id, encompassing the “most outwardly exuberant and nervous” parts of his personality. Combined with the three other leads and thrown in front of a live audience, the results are “quite freeing,” said McCormack. “To be in a sitcom again was really quite freeing. It feels like a big dessert after a meal,” said McCormack, who lets out his dramatic side as the lead on Netflix’s Travelers. “We’re children on the [Will & Grace] set. We all lose about 30 years of maturity when we’re together. We’re like kids in a sandbox. I feel so free on that set.” Will & Grace returns to NBC on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 9 p.m.

Top Five TV Reboots By ANDreA BILtON
T
editoriaL@antonmediagroup.com
hough dynamic characters and tangled plots can certainly make for an emotional rollercoaster, nothing quite measures up to the heart-wrenching feeling of seeing your favorite show go off the air. But a series finale doesn’t always mean a show has reached the end of its rope. In recent years, many TV networks have released revival seasons of classic cult favorites, even years after they were decidedly brought to an end. For all of you nostalgic binge-watchers out there, here’s a list of the most successful television reboots of shows that we just couldn’t get enough of.
Doctor Who
Arrested Development FOX comedy series Arrested Development may have been short-lived, gracing audiences with only three seasons after its premiere in 2003, but it still accumulated widespread critical acclaim and received backlash after its cancellation in 2006. Luckily, Netflix picked up the program and premiered a fourth season in 2013 to the delight of viewers everywhere who missed the goofy dysfunction of the Bluth family. The reboot proved to be exactly what people were craving, with the original cast back and wackier than ever. The show entered its fifth season this year, and the best part about its move to the streaming world is that you can binge all 16 episodes at once.
Hawaii Five-0
Full House/Fuller House
When CBS police drama Hawaii Five-0 bid its farewell to television in 1980, it was crowned as the longest running police drama in the history of American television after 12 years on the air. But that didn’t satisfy fans; they wanted more. And in 2010 they got what they asked for, when CBS brought back the show, featuring Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett Jr., successor of the late Steve McGarrett, head of the Hawaii Five-0 unit and star of the series during its initial run. The reboot has proven its success with eight seasons under its belt, and still entertains crime-drama lovers everywhere with its thrilling plotlines and compelling on-screen personalities.
If you were a fan of sitcoms in the ’90s, chances are you felt like an extended member of the Tanner family while you laughed along with Uncle Joey’s antics and Michelle’s quirky catch phrases back when Full House first aired in 1987. As the show had such lovable characters and light-hearted, family-centered plotlines, it’s easy to imagine the wave of disappointment that flooded audiences when the series concluded in 1995. But in 2016, the Tanner family was brought back to life on the small screen when Netflix premiered Fuller House. A modern reboot of the series, the show follows the younger generation of Tanners as they explore the trials and tribulations of adult life, bringing as much charm and silliness to the program as they did back when perms were in style.
20180928_XAL_LNW_PG00-1:9September24,2018
Audiences all over the globe grieved their favorite Time Lord when 1989 saw the finale of BBC’s hit series, Doctor Who. The show premiered on British television in 1963 but quickly gained an international cult following composed of science-fiction fanatics of all ages. Viewers couldn’t get enough of the Doctor, even after the 26 original seasons; and luckily, their mournful cries were pacified when the show was relaunched by BBC in 2005. The reboot is actively in its 11th season, and is adored by audiences new and old. The show was able to transition seamlessly into its new season even after a 16-year hiatus, since the time-traveling, extraterrestrial Doctor is able to reincarnate into a new body when his current form is badly damaged.
Twin Peaks After only two seasons following its premiere in 1990, it’s easy to see why fans of mystery horror drama Twin Peaks begged for more episodes. And after audiences spent years wondering what FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper was up to, Twin Peaks: The Return premiered on Showtime in 2017, set 25 years following the events of the original show. Original lead Kyle MacLachlan returned alongside a handful of other cast members, and the addition of new ones added even more intrigue and suspense to the series. The story’s 18 episode arc received critical acclaim, and talks of a potential fourth season are rumored, though without any release date in sight.

MUSIC
Ray LaMontagne Is An Old Soul By DAVe GIL De rUBIO dgiLderubio@antonmediagroup.com
Ray LaMontagne, front and center
retension, flash and lack of substance seem to be the calling card for so much of what passes for musical talent nowadays. If this is what you might come to expect from Ray LaMontagne, you’re advised to look elsewhere. Ever since he burst on the scene with his 2004 debut Trouble, the soft-spoken singer-songwriter has carved out a career for himself over a span of seven albums that includes the recently released Part of the Light. Possessing a raspy tenor, LaMontagne has crafted a sound that evokes the spirit of The Band and 1970s-era Van Morrison. Over time, he’s applied more of a psychedelic nuance to his material while working with a number of sympathetic producers including Ethan Johns, Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. Having taken the helm for his fourth studio outing, 2010’s God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise, LaMontagne has done the same for this most recent collection of songs. And like he did for God Willin’, the New Hampshire native chose to
record at The Big Room at Apple Hill, the studio he built for himself at his 130-acre farm in Ashfield, MA. The decision was a no-brainer for him. “I just wanted to really do it here. I have a studio here at the farm and it’s just a beautiful place to be,” he said. “It’s pretty nice to be able to wake up in the morning, make a cup of coffee

and walk into the studio. It’s very cozy and it’s always nice to be able to sleep in your own bed.” LaMontagne’s recording approach is less about technical wizardry and more about working with friends whose work he enjoys and respects. It’s a big part of what went into this recording process that took place over the span of a couple of 10-day sessions last year. Not unlike his prior work, the ambiance and warmth he’s become known for can be traced to this creative approach. Among the people who helped him with the heavy lifting this time out are musicians, with whom he’s developed this camaraderie including members of My Morning Jacket. “[This experience] was really just about getting my friends together—people that I can communicate with very easily and whose music and talents I admire,” he said. “Dave Givan wound up playing drums on Ouroboros and I really love the way he plays. So I wanted to get him out here. Seth Kauffman has played on Supernova, Ouroboros and now, this record. So he’s been on three records. I had just done a tour with Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket for Ouroboros and I wanted to try and get him up here. And Bo Koster from My Morning Jacket as well. Kevin Ratterman engineered Ouroboros. I just really love that guy and I wanted to get him up here.” LaMontagne’s back story is rather unusual. The oft-told tale is that he quit his job at a shoe factory in Lewiston, ME after waking up to his alarm clock radio playing Stephen Stills’ “Treetop Flyer.” While the details remain hazy to him, LaMontagne
20180928_XAL_LNW_PG00-1:9September24,2018
does remember buying his first guitar around that time (“I got a Fender acoustic guitar from a pawnshop in Lewiston, ME. It nearly killed me because it was so hard to play.”) As the epitome of an artist who would rather let his music speak for him, LaMontagne is getting ready to do just that as he gears up for a tour despite the idea of going on-stage runs counter to the privacy he cherishes. “I’m a very private person, so going out there is, in some ways, the hardest thing for me,” he admitted. “But there are people who want to hear this music and I’m very grateful that they’ve stuck with me and buy the albums. And the live audience continues to grow, which amazes me. It seems like tickets are sold every couple of years when I go out and it just continues to grow slow and steady. I’ve really kind of built this one show at a time—and I feel like that’s what I’m still doing.” That said, LaMontagne is excited about this current string of dates, especially given the visual aesthetics that he’s eager to share with his fans as he shares what people should expect to experience when they come out to see him play live. “We’re obviously touring a new record, so we’re going to be playing a lot of new songs. It will be a beautiful show. The set and lighting design is just gorgeous. A lot of effort went into that with a fellow named Jeremy Roth from Seattle,” he said excitedly. “He’s just an amazing lighting designer, so we have a beautiful analog set. It’s really nice. No LEDs—it’s gorgeous. It’s worth it just for that. I would tell people to come, sit back, watch the show and enjoy it. It’s going to be as beautiful to look at as well as listen to.”

he Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMH-LI) debuted the renovation of a state of the art playground facility for families with children who are receiving treatment at neighboring hospitals. The outdoor playground space has generously been underwritten by the Walter Kaner Foundation. Their $100,000 gift will bring joy to the thousands of families who benefit from the House each year. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Sept. 12 for the Walter Kaner Children’s Foundation playground at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Many families travel near and far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children—a long time to be away or to divide a family. For children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support. The Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families to call home so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little to no cost. “Our partnership with the Walter Kaner Foundation started in 2008 and to date, the foundation has generously donated $188,000 to the House,” said Matt Campo, president of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. “With the Walter Kaner Foundation sponsoring family stays at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island for over a decade, we have been able to continue to carry out our mission of keeping families close when they need each other most,” he continued. “We are so grateful for the foundation’s steadfast support and look forward to seeing the happiness the new playground brings to our resident families.” The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island was built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child—not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. Don’t Lose Your Restaurant Because Of Unpaid Sales Taxes
BY KAREN TENENBAUM

editorial@antonmediagroup.com
very year, restaurants get shut down for nonpayment for sales or withholding taxes. Based on an analysis of media coverage, restaurant seizures seem to be more common than other types of business seizures. Most restaurant owners might identify with the unique challenges of opening and operating a restaurant. Too often, we see many restaurateurs fall behind on their taxes as a result of cash flow issues and low profit margins. When restaurant owners ignore these tax issues, or even fail to address the tax issues promptly, they risk a padlock on their business. Here are a few essential tips New York restaurant owners need to know. Accurate and detailed record-keeping of sales is an absolute must. Record-keeping is critically important for a restaurant. Poor records can make it difficult to challenge an audit. The
combination of a sales tax audit and inadequate record-keeping could result in serious financial conflict for both the restaurant and its owner. A sales tax audit requires the following information, among other details: total sales, taxable sales, taxable purchases, tax collected, credits and tax due. The best way for a restaurant owner to minimize the risk of an audit is to develop and maintain good record-keeping practices. Having accurate and complete records is absolutely necessary for profitability tracking, and more importantly, tax compliance. Food and food products are subject to complex tax rules. Under New York law, (NY Tax Law §1115) food and food products are generally exempt from sales tax. However, in certain
circumstances, the sales of food and food products prepared by restaurants and similar establishments are subject to sales tax. If a restaurant offer patrons or employees food or drink “on the house,” there are a few issues at hand. Even when consumers or employees are not charged for food or drink, New York law states that the restaurant is still subject to a “use tax.” The use tax is “imposed on the use of taxable items and services in New York when sales tax has not been paid.” Therefore, a New York restaurant is responsible for the payment of tax even on complimentary food or drink, because it is used or consumed within the state. New York State takes sales tax seriously—consequences for failing to collect and/or remit sales tax are severe. Penalties and interest, as high as 14.5 percent, may be imposed for failing to pay sales tax. A business may also have its Certificate of Authority revoked or face criminal prosecution for failure
to pay. Worse, business owners or other responsible persons can be held personally liable for the sales tax owed. New York State can pursue any combination of enforcement methods, such as warrants, levies, income execution and seizures, to collect what is owed. If a taxpayer owes $10,000 or more in taxes, penalties or interest, New York can suspend a taxpayer’s New York State Driver’s License. If you haven’t collected or paid sales tax, New York State does offer a relief in the form of the Voluntary Disclosure and Compliance Program. Restaurant owners should contact a tax professional to discuss compliance with sales tax rules and how to resolve a tax dispute. Karen Tenenbaum, Esq., LL.M. However, at our car seat events in Nassau and Suffolk County, we typically see upwards of 90 percent of car seats improperly installed.” Of the car seat sessions to be held at GEICO, the public is invited to make an appointment for inspections on Saturday,

It is expected that the majority of inspected car seats will be improperly installed. “GEICO has enthusiastically partnered with EAC Network for the third year in a row to offer child safety seat checks for local Long Island families,” said Renee Rogers, GEICO’s Region 2–TA1 Supervisor. “Safety is a priority for us at GEICO and these events allow us to bring awareness to families with car seats as well as the proper installation of them.” To learn more about car seat safety or to attend an upcoming child safety seat inspection event, visit www.eac-network. org/safe-start or call Safe Start at 516-2927362 (Nassau County) or 631-648-7100 (Suffolk County). —Anton Media Group

The list of names read more like something you’d see on a Governor’s line-up than hosting a free voter registration drive on a college campus. But that was the point, as comedian Mike Birbiglia hosted Stand Up and Vote, an evening of comedy and voter registration, at Hofstra University. The Sept. 20, Hofstra event was one of several that Birbiglia hosted at college campuses across the country, aimed at motivating students to register to vote. While students enjoyed comedy inside the Helene Fortunoff Theater, representatives from HeadCount, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that promotes civic engagement, were in the hallway, registering students. “You should consider voting. I don’t know if you noticed this, but we’re living in strange times,” said Birbiglia in his opening set. “I never cared about voting but lately, I’m just like ‘when can we vote again?’ I’m just wandering into high school gymnasiums, looking for levers…pulling fire alarms…because it’s an emergency. It’s a very unique type of emergency.” Birbiglia and fellow comics Tom Thakkar, Sam Jay and Ted Alexandro not only provided humorous social commentary on the current political climate, but the perils of social media, terrible family members and living in New York.
Hofstra, which has held two presidential debates and the recent New York State Democratic gubernatorial primary debate, seemed a logical stop on Birbiglia’s tour. The university is currently in the middle of a Hofstra Votes campaign, which includes voter registration events, machine demonstrations, lectures and programs addressing policy issues on both sides of the aisle. While the roughly 300 students who attended are only a small portion of Hofstra’s 6,861 undergraduate student population, when asked by Birbiglia if they were registered, the vast majority of the audience raised their hands. “I definitely think its important, especially in this political climate, for people to take the initiative to be aware of politics and politicians running,” said Spencer Thurmond, president of on campus improv group Ha Ha Hofstra, which helped organize the event with the Student Government Association. “Our vote matters and people being able to sign up, especially at a college campus, is really important.” “I’m already registered, and it’s very important people vote. I just wanted to come support and I also love Mike Birbiglia,” said student Briana Bonfiglio. “I think a lot of liberal students are waking up and voting. It’s gotten better but it could be better as far as young people turning out to vote.”

ur jobs take up the majority of our day. We spend hours in the office, classroom, cubicle or other work environment, and unfortunately it may not always be engaging. At a certain point, we may decide that we want a change, and begin the search for new employment. While the decision may be a positive one, as we are embarking on a new and hopefully much more rewarding journey, the transition comes with its own stress. The search itself can be daunting; and creating time to find and secure a job, while still balancing the demands of your current vocation, is a challenge. During this time, we need a great deal of love and support from our partner, so that we can tackle our responsibilities head on. So how exactly does a relationship influence a career transition? Being an active and engaged listener would really benefit your partner as he or she prepares for the career transition.

satisfaction is mixed, relationships are linked to well-being. In a study by Feeney and Collins (2015), the researchers found that the ways in which close relationships help us thrive is through enabling us to cope with adversity and by supporting us as we pursue life’s opportunities. So what if you are the partner of someone who wants to embark on a new path? How can you best support your significant other through a career transition? Below are some personal tips that I would like to share: because a person may make a rash decision and wind up in a worse situation. After you listen to your partner, discuss why he/she feels the need to leave his/her current job, make sure you pose the difficult questions that your partner needs to confront. These may include asking why he/she feels the new job will be better, what will happen if he/ she doesn’t get the new job or winds up hating it down the road, how he/ she will handle any potential cuts in pay or benefits and what will happen if quitting burns a bridge with the previous employer. It is important that your partner isn’t blinded by his/her need for a career transition and answers these difficult questions before making a move.

r Through A Career Transition Help your partner in practical and tangible ways
Help your partner focus on him/herself and your relationship
In addition to being a source of support, you can also help your partner in more tangible and practical ways. Offer to read and proof his/her cover letter and CV. Assist in searching for new jobs and opportunities. Reach out to your friends in the field to help your partner network. These gestures will make a big difference.
While the job hunt can be time consuming and exhausting, it is important that your partner focuses on life outside of work. Take some time to pull your partner away from the stress and do something for each other. Plan a stress relieving date or a weekend away. In fact, stepping away from the chaos may help bring clarity to the job search process. A job transition doesn’t only affect the person switching careers; it can also affect the relationship that he or she has with you. No matter how you choose to help, make sure that you are a source of support, as you are your partner’s best cheerleader.

How Children Can Make New Friends
from page 23A
Some children may be able to articulate their fears and concerns while others may have more trouble expressing their worry. Often the concerns about back to school are related to making new friends or keeping old ones. While parents can reassure their child that their peers experience the same thoughts and concerns, they can help by coaching their child on how to make new friends and secure the friendship of old ones. The following are some coaching tips:
Be Emotionally Sensitive
Being an emotionally sensitive parent can help model for children how they can be more sensitive to others. Communicate with your child about feelings so that they can understand their own emotions as well as the emotion of others. When your child talks about their feelings take time to validate them. Ask your child to talk about the situations and thoughts they might be having that are related to those feelings, so that they can understand that feelings don’t just “fall out of the sky.”
Teach PerspectiveTaking
Help your child understand what it feels like to be in “someone else’s shoes.” Ask your child about what they think another person might be thinking or feeling about a situation as well as the impact of your child’s behavior on another child’s feelings. Role playing a variety of situations or finding opportunities to teach perspective-taking in the natural environment can help your child learn this skill. Learning to take someone else’s perspective can also help your child with turn taking and sharing and help to foster empathy for others.
Create Superordinate Goals
Find an after school activity that fosters teamwork rather than competition. During play dates help your child set up activities that have a common goal rather than ones that promote competition (i.e., engaging in a fun activity together like building a fort or baking a cake). The rewarding impact on the group helps to foster friendship.
Be an Active Listener
Engage in active listening with your child at home by reflecting your child’s concerns, providing validation, inquiring more about situations that affect them and helping them to problem solve. Modeling active listening skills for your child can help them to
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST Alison Gilbert
engage in the listening skills that are necessary for healthy friendships.
Encourage Emotion Regulation
Teach your child ways to manage their own emotions by using calming exercises like deep breathing or yoga. Children who are able to manage their own emotions are better equipped to manage friendships.
Find Common Ground
When children find things in common that they can talk about it helps to promote friendships. Encourage your child to take their time to observe other children and ask them questions. Also encourage your child to participate in activities with other children who might have similar interests. Teach your child that friendship is between two equal partners and to refrain from bragging.
Teach Ways to Show Openness
Help your child to be open to friendship. If your child is shy, help him or her practice saying hello to peers. You can teach your child ways to start a conversation, for example, by giving a compliment or asking a question.
Making new friends might seem like something that should be second nature, but it is actually a skill that requires modeling and practice. By incorporating these techniques you can help your child foster positive and enduring friendships.

Tips for Children:
• Look the bullies in the eye and in a calm voice and without showing emotion tell them to stop. While it is normal to feel angry or sad when being bullied, do not let the bully see those emotions. Share those feelings with a

What Can Parents Do?
• Observe your child for signs of being bullied. You may notice an avoidance of school or social activities, a change in appetite, complaints of stomach aches, signs of depression and anxiety, and physical signs of assault (bruising or ripped clothing). Pay attention to any significant change in behavior • Ask open-ended questions to learn about what is going on and to help your child manage situations. can go when feeling threatened. Allow for a safe and open conversation where the
child does not worry about getting in trouble or does not fear having technology limited as a result for being honest about what is happening. • Go over scenarios with your child to practice how to ignore the bully, how to tell the bully to stop without demonstrating emotion, how to laugh it off or how to ask for help from a trusted adult. • Contact the school and ask to meet with the administration if your child is being bullied. Document all cases of bullying in case outside sources need to become involved. Threatening messages should be reported to the police. • S et boundaries regarding technology. Teach your child about the risks of posting online and emphasize that any text or post can be forwarded or shared. Keep the family computer in a public space where it is easily monitored. Monitor texts and social media usage.
Insisting on taking phones overnight can help eliminate inappropriate exchanges at night. Children and teens have a right to feel safe at home and at school. Encourage your child to help others who are bullied by demonstrating kindness and/or getting help. Bullying can cause depression and anxiety. If your child is having a difficult time as a result of bullying, consider seeking support from a mental health professional. Graziella Simonetti is a parent educator for EAC Network’s Long Island Parenting Institute and works as an early childhood social worker for the New York City Department of Education. She holds an advanced certificate in parent education from Adelphi University and is a NYSPEP credentialed parenting educator. Simonetti is a former kindergarten teacher.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, bullying is “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.” Verbal bullying includes teasing, threatening and name calling. Physical bullying is manifested in hitting, spitting and kicking. Social bullying occurs by excluding someone, by spreading rumors and by purposefully embarrassing another. Cyberbullying is bullying that occurs online or via cell phones or other forms of technology.

Ring each word as you find it and when you have completed the puzzle, there will be 34 letters left over. They spell out the alternative theme of the puzzle.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). It’s nice to get a little pump-up of power -- proof that you’re important, that you matter. It’s even better to realize that that you’re important and you matter without the extra evidence. It will happen both ways this week. You’ll get your props, and it will probably be after you’re feeling grateful for what’s already yours. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It will fall on you to educate others about the situation they’re not seeing. Perhaps it’s obvious, and maybe they should be seeing it. Of course, that’s beside the point. Life gets easier because you choose to accept people for where they are right now and to walk together for the next stretch. As a group, you’re stronger. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Some of what you think you were born with is actually more of a creative process. You’re assembling it as you go. Things that fall into the category: personality, interests, spirituality and even your strengths. You’re still becoming you. Experiment and have some fun with the process of building yourself. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You are handling things one step at a time. You can do it. You will do it. You are doing it. Make this your mantra. Say it over and over until it crowds out the unhelpful thoughts, until you don’t have to say anything to yourself at all because everything in you is engaged in getting it done. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Torn? It’s because your need to feel included is in direct competition with your need for independence. There’s something you must accomplish and whether or not you have company in the task is beside the point. Be brave. Trust that you already belong, and that you can always join the group again later. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). People reveal themselves slowly over time. It’s also true that they change over the season, maybe even day to day. Knowing someone is never a finite thing. Pay attention to who people are today without assuming things based on who they were yesterday. This relationship secret will hold you in good stead. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Lately, a theme has emerged, and now it’s repeating as if to demand your attention. This has to do with some unsettling piece of drama that you haven’t quite figured out what to do with. Process it. Don’t let it keep getting in your way. You’re going to have to let go of it eventually. Why not now? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). No person is beneath you or above you. You know it and feel it on a basic human level. And yet there are better and worse fits for you when it comes to friendship, love and work. It’s certainly not snobbish to want to spend time around people who are good for you and help you stay at your healthiest and best.
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
Though there’s much about that will look the same from the outside, the real story of this solar return has to do with the deeper sense of happiness you’re developing. The bonds to your loved ones weave tighter but at the same time you somehow gain more freedom to pursue your purposes with the commitment level you want to devote. Invest in your education and training and you’ll quickly be paid back. Additions to your family come in the second quarter of 2019. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

ARIES (March 21-April 19). In some ways you feel more fulfilled around a certain person than you do when you are not. It may frighten you to seem to need someone, but it shouldn’t really. This isn’t dependency; it’s appreciation. And you’re the one generating the good feelings because of the special way you choose to see others. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Your smile changes depending on who is on the receiving end of it. So does your voice. Possibly, so does your whole personality. The people around us make a difference in who we are, a fact that’s undeniable this week. You’ve been aiming to add quality people to your realm. Be on the lookout; here they come. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The word choices give things their flavor. Choose “we” over “I” to emphasize teamwork. Choose “will” over “try” because the hard-core believe there is no “try,” just people figuring out how to do it or not. You’re getting your head into a new game this week because you need a breakthrough, and you’ll have one. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Progress will have to do with thinking productively. There are a lot of true ideas, but which ideas are also helpful? There are a lot of solutions that are fair, but which are also going to lead to a positive change? You’ll be letting go of some emotional baggage in favor of the brighter future coming together before your eyes.

Pumpkins Of The World: By steVe mOsCO SmoSco@antonmediagroup.com
I
f you can’t pumpkin spice it, does it even exist? And so goes the marketing campaigns for an untold number of companies every year between August and November, as they target consumers hungry for a little fall flavoring in every imaginable morsel that can be eaten. While pumpkin spice has been around probably since 1934—when seasoning cartel McCormick first released the blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice—it was the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte in 2003 that released it from the shackles of pumpkin pie recipes to a sickening array of products.
The Science Of It Believe it or not, scientists have attempted to explain the why and how of the yearly pumpkin-spice obsession. Disregarding for a moment the people who are merely in it for the flavor, one of the major contributing factors is all about the olfactory. According to a study by the Institute of Food Technologists, the smell wafted forth by the spice blend—particularly that of the synthetic version created in a lab—mimics the aroma of butter browning with sugar, which reminds the brain of freshly baked pumpkin pie. And that intoxicating aroma is a veritable cornucopia of comforting memories of family, holiday gatherings, fuzzy socks and all that is warm and cozy. And according to some research, there is also a psychological element to our preoccupancy with pumpkin this time of year. Reactance Theory says that if a product is only available for a short amount of time, consumers are far more likely to reach for their wallet. Marketers have jumped on this concept like drug dealers in an alleyway with slogans like, “For A Limited Time Only!” and “While Supplies Last!” A study by the University of Rhode Island says that the “limited” nature of such offers threatens consumer freedom on a psychological level, thus pushing the purchaser to fork over the dough. Then there’s the pure and simple, All-American need to fit in with others in society. Especially with the advent of social media platforms like Instagram, social conformity calls
for us to find the product and post pictures of ourselves mugging with said product so that we feel part of the human tribe.
Savor The Flavor Scientific and psychological theories are nice and all, but of course, it could just be the sugar rush we crave. Luckily, with every autumn comes more and more pumpkin spice flavors to satisfy our deeply ingrained needs—whatever they may be. Aside from Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Starbucks is also pushing Pumpkin Spice Cookie Straws and Pumpkin Spice K-Cups. And if coffee isn’t your thing, grab a Tazo Chai Pumpkin Spice Latte Tea Concentrate. Let’s say it’s the morning and you want something to go along with
your pumpkin beverage. You’re in luck, as there is an utterly staggering array of breakfast cereals that now offer all the nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon your brain can handle. Frosted Flakes, Cheerios, Special K, Life and Mini-Wheats all bring that fall flavor to the bowl. And if that’s not enough, cereal conglomerate Kellogg’s also boasts Pumpkin Spice Pop-Tarts for those times you want a faux pumpkin pie about the size of a small envelope. If you’ve got a sweet tooth that is also a pumpkin spice tooth, Kit Kat has released a version of the wafer candy for you and Brach’s offers the candy conundrum, Pumpkin Spice Candy Corn. These go along with the already circulating Pumpkin Spice M&Ms and Hershey’s Kisses.

Meanwhile, Peeps, the marshmallow Easter chicks that have no business butting in this time of year, offers a Pumpkin Spice version as well. Pumpkin spice has also invaded dinner time, with reports on the Internet indicating the existence of Pumpkin Spice Chicken Sausage from Nature’s Promise, with these tubes of meat just waiting to be dunked into Pumpkin Spice

hummus, courtesy of Cedar’s. And why not serve that with a side of rigatoni drenched in Cucina Antica’s Tuscany Pumpkin Pasta Sauce? Just like grandma used to make. And for snack time, pop open a can of Pumpkin Pie Spice Pringles, then wash that down with Lester’s Fixins Pumpkin Pie Soda. Finally, when the kids are off to bed, it’s time to get crazy with Captain Morgan Jack-O-Blast
Pumpkin Spiced Rum and Three Lakes Winery Pumpkin Wine and Pinnacle Pumpkin Spice Vodka to go with the ubiquitous pumpkin-flavored beer that infiltrates the brewery industry at this time every year. Then, take the edge off before bedtime with some pumpkin spice tobacco courtesy of Sutliff. And don’t forget to wash up with pumpkin spice Mrs. Meyer’s Hand Soap.
Only Ourselves To Blame These pumpkin flavors exist for a reason: whether those reasons are emotional or strictly chemical, the demand for pumpkin spice is high. Marketers know it and consumers want it. So instead of fighting it, get it all while it lasts—before Christmas rolls around and peppermint permeates our lives.
