Jim Gaffigan ready to bring the laughs for NYCB Theatre shows BY BETSY ABRAHAM babraham@antonmediagroup.com

W

hen Jim Gaffigan takes the stage at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury for not one, not two, but three post-Thanksgiving weekend shows, it’ll give guests in the audience a chance to stir themselves out of their turkey-induced comas long enough to laugh about food, parenting and of course, Hot Pockets. “There’s something about Thanksgiving, which is this great holiday, but there’s a little bit of an escape people need after this kind of crash course in family that I want to make light of,” Gaffigan said. It’s almost too fitting that Gaffigan would be performing after Thanksgiving, a holiday that mixes food and family. The standup comedian is best known for his food humor (his second book, Food: A Love Story was a New York Times bestseller) as well as his witty commentary on what it’s like raising his five children (the subject of his first book, Dad Is Fat). Gaffigan’s jokes are not only extremely relatable, but he also sets himself apart from his comedy peers by keeping his shows relatively clean and noncontroversial, opting for material that denounces things like kale instead of political figures. “There’s nothing really earthshattering about my point of view,” Gaffigan said. “My point of view is I don’t like to do anything. In my fantasy, I’m sitting in bed and eating bacon.” Gaffigan’s most recent project was The Jim Gaffigan Show, which he wrote with his wife and writing partner, Jeannie Gaffigan. With his wife as the showrunner and him acting in almost every scene, the

couple decided not to go ahead for a third season this summer, saying the TV Land project was taking too much time away from their kids. Jeannie has been an important influence in Gaffigan’s comedy; the two often write together and Jeannie helped co-write his books as well as produce several of his comedy specials. “I almost long for those days when our kids were younger. We would

put them to bed and just write for an hour or so, but we haven’t been able to do that lately,” said Gaffigan. “Sometimes it comes down to touring during the summer with a babysitter, so we spend time with [the kids] during the day and at night, I’ll do a show and Jeannie will take notes, and we’ll discuss it afterwards. It’s coming up with ideas that way.” Not only has his wife influenced his comedy, but his children do as well.

“There’s an innocence and fearlessness there,” Gaffigan said. “And seeing that comedy is sometimes just an attitude. There’s something fun about witnessing the world from their fresh set of eyes.” And while Gaffigan has made a name for himself with his food humor, the Indiana-native said he’s ready to explore other topics. “Comedians just want to be known as funny. Not the food comedian or clean comedian, they just want to be known as funny. I didn’t set out to be the food guy, but you write what you feel passionate about,” Gaffigan said. “It’s fun to challenge yourself. I like the fact that we’re in this day and age where stand-ups change their whole outlook in a year or two and you’re challenged to find new material.” Constantly looking to challenge himself, Gaffigan will soon be showing fans more of his serious side, diving deeper into the world of drama with a role as police deputy Donny Mashman on the FX show Fargo next season. “I do enjoy acting and there is something about once you’re viewed as a comedian, you’re only viewed as a comedian, so it’s exciting to get dramatic or dramedy roles,” said Gaffigan, who also has dramatic roles in the 2017 films The Bleeder and Chappaquiddick. “If it’s a good role, I’m on board. I’m all for getting lost in a character.” While Gaffigan said he’s not sure what his next comedy project will be, fans can laugh along with him during his ongoing Fully Dressed Tour. Tour dates include Friday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Find out more at www. jimgaffigan.com.

t’s the time of year where people are in the spirit of giving. Whether it’s to local organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters or the Salvation Army, the holidays bring out the best in people. The same goes for celebrities, who show their generosity year round. In honor of Thanksgiving, check out the list of charitable celebs who give to their charities everyday. Derek Jeter: Turn 2 Foundation Perhaps one of the greatest short stops (and arguably athletes) of all time, Derek Jeter is no stranger to giving. In 1996, The former New York Yankee created the Turn 2 Foundation, which helps children and teenagers avoid drug and alcohol addiction and “turn 2” a healthy lifestyle. The organization is named after the double play and Jeter’s number. To date, Turn 2 has raised more than $19 million for programs in New York City, Western Michigan and Tampa, FL. In celebration of its 20th anniversary. Jeter’s goal for the foundation is to reach $2 million in donations. For more information, visit www.derekjeter.com. Michael J. Fox: Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research In 1991, Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Since then, the actor, producer, author and activist has fought tirelessly to give those who have the disease a voice. Fox established the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000, which

20161118_XAL_LNW_PG00-1:2November14,2016

is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. It is the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s disease research in the world, raising more than $450 million in funds. For more, visit www.michaeljfox.org. Charlize Theron: Africa Outreach Project The Academy Award-winning South African actress and UN Messenger of Peace founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) in 2007, in an effort to support African youth in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Theron has dedicated herself to improving the lives of women and children in South Africa, and to preventing and stopping violence. In 2009, she partnered with TOMS shoes and donated 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in need, with a portion of the proceeds going to CTAOP. For more information, visit www.charlizeafricaoutreach.org.

Christy Turlington Burns: Every Mother Counts This supermodel isn’t just another pretty face; she is also a mom and entrepreneur who founded Every Mother Counts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. Like Theron, Turlington Burns also teamed up with TOMS to release a limited edition backpack and tote. With every bag purchase, TOMS helps provide a safe birth for a mother and a baby in need. Every Mother Counts invests in programs around the world to ensure all women have access to quality maternal healthcare. For more information, visit www. everymothercounts.org.

iving legend is not a designation that should be casually tossed around. But in the case of Chita Rivera, it’s a mantle that should be deservedly accorded to her given the staggering accomplishments she’s accrued in the world of Broadway and live theater. Space here limits naming all the awards Rivera has been honored with since she first professionally took the stage in 1952 for a national tour of Call Me Madam alongside the late Elaine Stritch. But understand that Rivera is a ninetime Tony Award nominee and wound up taking it twice for The Rink (1984) and Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993). She also became the first Hispanic woman to receive a Kennedy Center Honors award (December 2002) and later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. And while Chita Rivera and Dick Van one might expect Dyke during the 1960 retirement to be production of Bye Bye Birdie the current order (Photo by Friedman-Abeles) of business for the 83-year-old performer, she’s currently on the road with her two most recent performances: a Nov. 7 Carnegie Hall appearance for Chita: Nowadays and a Nov. 18 Long Island stop at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, where audiences will be treated to Chita: A Legendary Celebration. the key to longevity for this ageless wonder, the Washington, D.C. native points to a rather simple approach to her craft combined with a creative restlessness that quells any hints of complacency. “You just live your life and do it like you’ve been doing it your whole life,” she explained. “I eat and rest properly, exercise, keep myself in shape and as I tell the kids, I’m always ready. Plus, I don’t get ahead of myself. I just go, ‘I love this today. This is great. I hope I can do it tomorrow.’ I always knew that I wanted to dance and one thing led to another, so I’ve been pretty lucky.” While Rivera’s earliest memories are of her older brother showing movies in the basement of their family’s house followed by his baby sister showing off what she’d learned at ballet school, things really took off for the 15-yearold Rivera when she auditioned for the School of American Ballet before storied choreographer George Balanchine. “When I auditioned, I didn’t know it was [before] Mr. Balanchine. Had I known, it would have been a horse of a different color,” she recalled. “He was like the sweetest grandfather you could have. He was gentle, kind and put me through my tasks. It was wonderful doing it and great when it was over, and was even greater when I realized that I had my scholarship.”

And while Rivera admits her busy schedule doesn’t allow her to be as up on New York City live theater, off-Broadway production Cagney is a current favorite. (“I love Cagney. The fellow who plays Cagney [Robert Creighton] did [The Mystery of Edwin] Drood with me, and he’s just so adorable and cute. I wouldn’t have missed seeing it for the world.”) She has noticed the Great White Way’s trend towards more revivals in recent years, a development that concerns her when it comes to the genre having room for up-and-coming creative types. “There aren’t as many original plays that have been given an opportunity. I think a lot of people have just gone off to television because they want to make their money, and I think the ticket prices are hard for people,” Rivera said. “God knows there’s a place for revivals because we should have wonderful shows that we’re seeing from years ago back up on the stage. But it shouldn’t be at the expense of taking a chance on a wonderful piece of theater that’s brave and offers brand-new writers, dancers and talent an opportunity. I think that’s the number one thing that I see that’s different. Plus, what are they going to do? Everything is just so expensive. It kills us.” Chita Rivera will be appearing in Chita: A Legendary Celebration on Nov. 18 at The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, 720 Northern Blvd. in Greenvale. ow that the Chicago Cubs have broken their century-plus curse and the World Series is in our rear-view mirror, the Major League Baseball is getting ready to hand out significant hardware as voted on by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). Winners of the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young, Manager of the Year and Rookie of the Year will be getting announced through Nov. 17. This year, our only local representative is slugging New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, who despite only coming up on Aug. 3, proceeded to hit 20 home runs in his first 51 games, tying Wally Berger for the fastest to that number. This unprecedented feat made him the first player to hit 20 after not hitting his first until after Aug. 1, per Elias. Between the four baseball franchises that have called New York home, they are responsible for 18 players who have won this highly coveted award.
