These are Tony Bennett’s five favorite artists: 1. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (July 15, 1606-Oct. 4, 1669) [I love Rembrandt], in particular his self portraits. 2. John Singer Sargent (Jan. 12, 1856-April 14, 1925) “I love all of his work—a true American master who actually inspired many European painters.”

When I Paint My Masterpiece

3. Vincent Van Gogh (March 30, 1853-July 29, 1890) “The emotional content of his work communicates in a way that is exceptional.”

By now, Tony Bennett’s skill as a painter is about as well-known and renowned as his ability to dip into the Great American Songbook and deliver to music lovers of any age. Signing his work either as his given name of Anthony Benedetto or just Benedetto, the Astoria native has maintained this creative pursuit dating back to his childhood. Bennett’s love of this artistic discipline has not only led to his sketching and painting every day, but engaging in formal training as an art student at Manhattan’s School of Industrial Arts (now known as the School of Art and Design) when he was younger. The self-proclaimed “museum freak’s” dedication to his craft has found him dropping in on galleries and museums around the world while immersing himself in the

work of the great masters. His skills with a paintbrush have earned him exhibitions in numerous galleries including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art and the National Arts Club. But it would take a push from a fellow music icon for Tony Bennett the singer to push himself as Anthony Benedetto the artist. “I have been drawing and painting all my life but I have to credit Duke Ellington who encouraged me in later years to take my art more seriously and turn it into a second vocation,” Bennett recalled. “He told me it was better to be creative in more than one field and he was so right. I love the fact that when I am not performing, I can stay in a creative zone and paint and then when I am done painting, it’s time to hit the stage again and perform.” (To read a full feature on Tony Bennett, go to page 10A.)

4. Joaquín Sorolla (Feb. 27, 1863Aug. 10, 1923) “The quality of light he achieved is astounding.” 5. David Hockney “My Wife and Daughters (July 9, 1937- ) “He in the Garden” (1910) is so creative and unexpected in his artwork.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy” (1970–71)

HOLIDAY DINNER

(And Chicken)

BY STEVE MOSCO

SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Thanksgiving is a holiday meant for gorging on the joys of the harvest season and getting as close to a food-induced comatose state as possible. Many meats have crossed the dinner table throughout Thanksgiving history. Some households choose one beast as the main course, some choose multiple options—but one enterprising American stepped forward to create a mythical amalgamation of meats; the turducken, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken. To build a turducken, the duck and the chicken must be de-boned, and the turkey semi de-boned. The boneless bird suits are layered on top of one

Another Long Island spot to place a turducken order is Biscuits & Barbeque, 106 E. Second St. in Mineola (516-493-9797). Biscuits offers a 22- to 24-pound whole turkey, with chicken and duck layered inside with apple sage, andouille and cornbread stuffings. “It is labor intensive,” said Joan Gallo, owner of Biscuits & Barbeque, who noted that the restaurant will make about six or eight turduckens to go and a couple of dozen for serving at the restaurant, which will be open on Thanksgiving day. Both restaurants encourage customers to order their turduckens sooner rather than later, in order to ensure securing a turducken for your Thanksgiving spread.

another, with the in between cavities filled with various stuffing, as well as proprietary seasonings. The entire tri-bird is then rolled up, tied securely and roasted for a handful of hours, depending on the size of the bird(s). Taste-wise, the flavors of the three birds compliment each other nicely. The juices of the fatty duck add moisture to the turkey and the chicken adds a mild roasted flavor at the center. As for a drink pairing for your turducken, a strong, dark flavor is needed to stand up to the savory assault of the mega-bird. Consider a pinot noir wine or a strong, dark, Belgian ale. Not recommended: a pinotalerum, which is a pinot, stuffed in an ale, stuffed in rum. No one knows for sure who invented the turducken, but some say it was created by legendary Louisiana chef Paul Prudhomme, others credit football analyst John Madden for its popularization. But the bird beast’s origin story is perhaps not quite as important as its Long Island availability. Two popular Cajun restaurants on Long Island are offering to build the bird abomination for your Thanksgiving mega-feast, including Big Daddy’s, 1 Park Lane in Massapequa (516-799-8877). Tommy Kurtz, manager at Big Daddy’s, said the menu item is as popular as ever. “On Thanksgiving eve, our chef will have his assembly line set up and make at least 40 at a time,” said Kurtz. Big Daddy’s chef Craig Bedell slow smokes his turducken and stuffs it with layers of andouille sausage and cornbread stuffings.

Funny And Shattering

Clever Little Lies Will Delight Marlo Thomas stars as Alice in Joe DiPietro’s comedy, Clever Little Lies, about devastating truths and the strength of a couple’s marriage. Alice’s husband Bill (Greg Mullavey), returns home after a tennis game with their son, Billy (George Merrick of Honeymoon in Vegas, South Pacific), and seems a little distracted. Alice pries the concern from Bill and immediately detects the adulterous trouble in their son’s marriage to Jane (Kate Wetherhead of Spelling Bee, Legally Blonde— Off-Broadway). She immediately springs into action to bring the young couple, who have a new baby, face-to-face, over dessert. Throughout the evening, Alice unravels her son’s lies through her own confessions, debunkT:4.24” ing her seemingly perfect marriage to Bill. How

Kate Wetherhead as Jane, George Merrick as Billy, Marlo Thomas as Alice and Greg Mullavey as Bill in Clever Little Lies (Photo by Matthew Murphy) much honesty can any family handle in one night? DiPietro’s story does not spare anyone’s truth-awakening feelings, a script we can all relate to. An Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe Award winner, Thomas is a perfect fit as this

all-knowing mom. Mullavey, with more than 100 Broadway shows under his belt, is an equal delight. And along with Merrick and Wetherhead, this off-Broadway family will have you laughing from start to finish. Clever Little Lies, directed by David Saint, is a story of imperfect love and imperfect marriages. Clever, funny, shocking and real, Thomas and cast are absolutely charming. The 90-minute, no-intermission show opened on Oct. 12 at the Westside Theatre, 407 West 43rd St., and will close on Jan. 3. Tickets start at $79 (www.cleverlittlelies.com).

Worst Team Uniforms: NFL Edition

BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Alternate and throw-back jerseys have become a lucrative revenue stream for professional sports franchises. Along the way, there have been plenty of fashion blunders as evidenced during a recent Thursday Night Football match-up. With the all-green New York Jets doing battle on the gridiron against the all-red Buffalo Bills, negative comments flowed on social media with one person pointing out that the game looked like “a gang of Grinches fighting an Elf on the Shelf gang.” With the NFL celebrating its 95th anniversary, we’ve had plenty of crimes against style to parse through. These just happen to be the most egregious. Chicago Bears The Dave Wannstedt-led squad pulled on these gems during the 1994 season when the Monsters of the Midway wore these throwbacks in 1994 to commemorate their 75th anniversary. These striped navy blue/mustard yellow beauties with off-white pants and blue socks are a nod to the team’s uniform from the 1924-25 season.

ran a correctional facility on the side. These Browns uniforms that were in use from 1957-60 are complimented by helmets that look like someone stenciled numbers on them with a Sharpie. Denver Broncos You have to go back to the 1966 Denver Broncos of the old AFL, when this Western Division stalwart wound up sporting burnt orange and blue uniforms, completed with the logo of what appeared to be an anemic horse in the midst of a full-body heave plastered on the side of the helmet. Green Bay Packers The 2010-11 Green Bay Packers went with throwback jerseys dating back to the 1929 season by temporarily trading in the distinct Kelly green and gold for blue and gray with a yellow disc on the front that made Aaron Rodgers look like he’d swiped the jersey from a CYO basketball team while wearing a giant

like a fairy vomited day-glo blue and yellow pixie sticks, were used by the Eagles as 2007 throwback jerseys that paid homage to the team’s predecessors, the Frankford Yellow Jackets, which went belly up in 1931. Some things are better left in the past. Pittsburgh Steelers Are we at football game or a jailbreak? These were first used in 2012 to commemoChicago Bears rate the 75th anniversary of the AFC’s oldest team. The outfits were a tribute to the Steelers 1933 predecessor, the Pittsburgh Pirates and succeeded in making Big Ben look like a giant bumblebee. Seattle Seahawks I know the Pacific Northwest is

t s r o W purple olive as a helmet.

Cleveland Browns To put it simply, the combination of orange and brown is the equivalent of what unis might look like if the team’s ownership

New York Giants This 1975 uniform choice summed up those dark days of Giants lore when the team’s storied lower-case “ny” was kicked to the curb in favor of a more modernized double-line, uppercase “NY.” Players’ numbers were removed from the front of the helmet and red racing trim bracketed the thick blue stripes down the side of the pants. Philadelphia Eagles These blue and yellow uniforms, which looked

plagued by plenty of rain and fog, but I’m not sure the decision to have the 2009 Seattle Seahawks debut fluorescent lime green throwback jerseys bright enough to land incoming planes was necessarily warranted. Tampa Bay Buccaneers And how could we leave off the 1976 Buccaneers and their clash of fluorescent orange, red and white that wound up getting the term creamsicle used as the go-to adjective to this mish-mash of color? Defenders say the unis are awesome because they are so garish, not unlike the team’s 0-14 inaugural season.
