T
he parade that serves as the kickoff to the holiday season is back. Wesley Whatley is the creative director of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and has been doing the job flawlessly for the past 13 years. Although he is a veteran, it’s a mixture of excitement and anticipation in every possible way for Whatley. “It’s probably one of the longest running variety shows still on television, and there’s something special about live events. The unexpected can happen,” he
Marching down Broadway for 90 years said. “We don’t get a dress rehearsal on the streets of New York. We want it to be beautiful and no matter how many years I do this, it’s fresh and new every year.” As creative director, crafting a musical performance comes down to creating moments that tell different stories throughout the parade from the first
clown to Santa’s final appearance. “The balloons are tied to relationships with partners, so some balloons will come and go to make room for new ones,” said Whatley, who added that one of the most difficult challenges is balancing tradition with innovation. “We’ve had 90 parades and there’s expectations, so we want to deliver new surprises around every corner. There’s a lot of characters that want to be on our parade, and we want the balloons to be instantly recognizable and celebrities in

PARADE from page 3A their own right.” Flying down the parade route for this year’s 90th celebration, Whatley said the team wanted to do something special in recreating the iconic balloon Felix the Cat. The first licensed character that debuted in the 1920s is being recreated in the same manner he was back then (filled with air, not helium), and held up by sticks. This year, there is a total of 16 giant character balloons and 27 novelty or “heritage” balloons in the parade, including a new Charlie Brown balloon where Charlie is entangled in his kite strings, a new version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and the new Dreamworks Trolls balloon full of vibrant color. Preparation for everyone’s favorite holiday parade begins 18 months in advance. Marching bands are selected early so that they can raise funds to travel to New York. The creative team sifts through hundreds of applications before selecting around 10-12 high school and college bands. “I was a marching band kid...watching those kids perform on stage for 50 million people, it’s a remarkable experience,” said Whatley. Three to four months out begins the booking of celebrities and performances are crafted. The team looks to pop culture, the current Broadway season and celebrities to determine who the audience wants to see. “We’re very proud of the 90th anniversary. The first three minutes will be a special tribute to the 90th anniversary with our friends the Muppets. It’s going to be a hilarious and super fun production number,” he said. “Our talent is great, and there’s a special moment at the end where someone who
One of the many floats new to the parade this year is Dreamworks Trolls. (Photo courtesy of Macy’s) just celebrated a 90th birthday will be performing.” Parade attendees and viewers can share their experience with a special Snapchat filter. Another unique feature is the Macy’s Parade app that serves as a time traveling, virtual reality experience where people stand in front of Macy’s with their phone
and can see the parades in the 1930s and ‘40s as if it was happening live. “It’s a way for us to celebrate our heritage in a virtual way,” said Whatley. The 90th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs live at 9 a.m. on NBC.

DINING
Thank You,
Leftovers
W
hen it comes to memorable sandwiches, few match the grace and tradition of the Thanksgiving leftover sandwich. In my house it consists of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy, with a slice of turkey skin soaked in gravy, all piled into a semolina roll. Variations can and do occur, like adding mashed potatoes or another side dish to the fray, but the main ingredients are always present. STEVE MOSCO But Thanksgiving leftovers are a many-splendored thing, and the folks at Taste Of Home—a food media brand spanning magazines, books, the web and more—boast a veritable cornucopia of unique leftover creations. Must-Watch Holiday Movies BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
I
n my house, we weren’t allowed to watch or listen to anything Christmas until Thanksgiving. So as the day of the Turkey kicks off with the classic Macy’s Day Parade, several hours of family and food and then a turkey coma, Thanksgiving is the time of year when everything officially ushers into the Christmas and holiday season. Finish digesting with some good old fashioned holiday movies as you gear up for the man in the big red suit and Hannukah Harry.
It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
What better holiday movie than this one? It’s A Wonderful Life stars James Stewart as George Bailey, who wishes he had never been born, when an angel (Henry Travers) is sent to earth to make George’s wish come true. It isn’t until he sees a world without himself that George realizes just how many lives he has impacted. In the end, it’s all about family and being grateful for what you have in life, and if you need a reminder, this classic is the perfect answer.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
The Polar Express (2004)
Teaming up with someone who is the complete parallel opposite of you is no easy task. That’s what happens when control freak Neal Page (Steve Martin) and the annoyingly talkative Del Griffith (John Candy), must find a way home together after the airport cancels all flights just in time for Thanksgiving. A comedy classic that will have you laughing off all of those turkey calories.
Tom Hanks voices several characters in this book turned movie that is all about believing in Christmas magic. When the Polar Express comes to town for its annual trek to the North Pole, a young boy doesn’t believe in Santa’s existence until a train ride on Christmas Eve night changes his life.
The March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934)
While some may know this movie by its original title Babes in Toyland, March of the Wooden Soldiers is a holiday classic. The musical comedy stars Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy as Stanley Dum and Ollie Dee. The two must borrow money from their employer, the toymaker, to pay off the mortgage on their residence in Mother Peep’s shoe, all while protecting Little Bo Peep from the clutches of the evil Barnaby.

Thanksgiving Football Follies BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
S
The Juice Is Loose
DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
The Detroit Lions (along with the Dallas Cowboys) have been one of two franchises that have traditionally hosted the Thanksgiving game dating back a number of decades. In 1976, the Lions hosted the hapless Bills. And while Detroit came away with a 27-14 victory thanks to the anemic passing of Buffalo quarterback Gary Marangi (4-for-29 for 21 yards), running back O.J. Simpson (left) killed it, putting up 273 yards and setting the single-game rushing Thanksgiving Day record. This NFL record stood until Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears beat it by two yards nearly a year later.
ave for Super Bowl Sunday, Thanksgiving has turned into one of the National Football League’s signature days, dating back to when the league kicked off this tradition back in 1920. Over the near-century that the NFL has staked its claim to providing entertainment for the masses recovering from the holiday’s culinary onslaught, there have been plenty of highlights ranging from the storied Red Grange making his NFL debut in 1925 to the Chicago Bears winning the first overtime Thanksgiving game in 1980. Here are a few more notable gridiron clashes.
Bottoms Up For Mark Sanchez
For Mark Sanchez (far right), failure has always been more highlighted than success. No one remembers the four playoff games he won his first two seasons as the Jets quarterback. Most focus on the nationally televised consecutive fumbles the Jets had against the rival New England Patriots during a 2012 Thanksgiving 49-19 drubbing. Playing behind a porous line, Sanchez took the second fumble, tried to run it himself, ran into the rear of guard Brandon Moore, lost the ball and Pats safety Steve Gregory picked it up and ran the pigskin in for the score.
Fish Squish Red Birds
Far from a marquee quarterback at a time when Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw were his peers, Miami Dolphins field general Bob Griese (left) managed to do something that the aforementioned duo never did—throw six touchdowns in a single game. And while that 1977 Thanksgiving game found visiting team Miami taking the St. Louis Cardinals down by a record score of 55-14 thanks to the six touchdowns thrown by Griese, he did it by doing 15-for-23 and only throwing for a modest 207 yards. In his first Thanksgiving Day game, the Colts’ Peyton Manning tied an NFL record with six touchdown passes in a 41-9 win over the Lions.
Barry Beats Down The Bears Cowboys Suffer Lett-Down
A major gaffe by defensive tackle Leon Lett (number 78 above left) enabled his Dallas Cowboys to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in this 1993 Thanksgiving game. In the middle of a freak snowstorm at Texas Stadium, Dallas led 14-13 when Miami went for a field goal with 15 seconds left. The Cowboys blocked the kick, but rather than allow it to roll harmlessly out of bounds, Lett dove for the ball, a pile-up ensued and the Dolphins recovered. Miami kicker Pete Stoyanovich’s second-chance, chip-shot field goal won the game for Miami.
Given the Detroit Lions’ long association with playing on Thanksgiving Day, it’s no surprise that career Lions running back Barry Sanders (left) put up lofty numbers in 10 contests played (931 rushing yards/ eight touchdowns). Sanders put a real hurting on the rival Bears in 1997, when he rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns during a 55-20 rout of Chicago. Sanders not only moved past Eric Dickerson to number 2 on the NFL’s all-time rushing list, but ran for more than 2,000 yards that season.
