A (Stage) Actor’s Life For Me Bobby Cannavale’s love affair with the theater BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

When William Shakespeare wrote “All the world’s a stage,” as part of the monologue for As You Like It, actor Bobby Cannavale clearly took this sentiment to heart, dating back to his days attending St. Michael’s Catholic School in Union City, NJ. Since appearing as a gangster in a production of Guys and Dolls as an 11-year-old, Cannavale has racked up quite the canon, securing notable roles on television (Boardwalk Empire, Oz, Will & Grace, Nurse Jackie, Third Watch) and on the silver screen (The Station Agent, Blue Jasmine, Chef, Ant-Man). But it’s live theater and the stage that remains closest to the actor’s heart. “I pretty much did a play a year through my teens and then started auditioning in the city when I was about 20 years old,” Cannavale explained. “I was a backstage kid and just auditioned for open calls, non-Equity jobs and showcases. I just did those until I got in with a theater company called Circle Repertory Company, and then LAByrinth. I made those my creative homes and learned a lot there. I very much wanted to work on stage in New York, especially from a young age.” To that end, his latest project will be taking part in a special benefit for Playing on Air that will be held on Monday, Dec. 7 at Brooklyn’s BRIC Arts/ Media House. Playing on Air is the only public radio show and podcast featuring live recordings of the finest contemporary 10 to 20-minute American plays. Each play is then followed by conversation with its playwright, cast and director. Founded in 2012 by artistic producer Claudia Catania, Playing on Air has produced and recorded 60 plays

that have aired on 43 public radio stations and affiliates in 14 states across the country. For this live presentation, Cannavale will be sharing the stage with Tony Shalhoub in a production of David Auburn’s 2 Dads that will be directed by Claudia Weill. Having already done a reading of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Crazy Eights with Kevin Hogan and friends Rosie Perez and John Leguizamo, Cannavale was more than happy to take anoth plunge and be part of this benefit performance. “It was a pretty easy sell for me. It’s about having fun. This thing I’m doing on Dec. 7 was really an opportunity to work with Tony Shalhoub, because I’m such a huge fan of his and I know him socially a little bit,” Cannavale said. “That’s one of those things where actors who like each other’s work, you tell them you’re a big fan of their work and you hope to work together some day. Plus, I love reading plays out loud. It really does fit my temperament really well.” Still a very much in-demand actor, Cannavale’s next role will be as lead Richie Finestra in the upcoming 2016 HBO drama Vinyl, whose producers include Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger and was inspired by New York City’s late 1970s music scene. That said, the specialized stage work he does while participating in Playing on Air poses its own special set of thrills and creative curve balls that he heartily embraces. “Gelling with the actors in a very short amount of time [can be a challenge]. When you rehearse a play, you don’t worry about results because you’re going to be rehearsing for a month. When you get thrown together in a situation like this, it’s usually on the afternoon that you’re going to do it,” he said. “That’s probably the biggest challenge. Other than that, I love it.”

Bobby Cannavale’s Favorite Broadway Roles 1. The Motherf**ker With the Hat (Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and premiered at the Gerald Schoen- Chris Rock and Bobby Cannavale field Theatre on in The Motherf**ker With the Hat. April 11, 2011) “It’s just a great, terrific and beautiful play. It’s an unlikely love story and I like the urban setting. It’s a part I’ve never gotten to play before, so I really love that.” 2. The Big Knife (Written by Clifford Odets and was staged as a revival and opened at the American Airlines Theatre on Marin Ireland as Marion Castle and Bobby Cannavale as Charlie April 16, 2013) Castle in The Big Knife. This is a play that I saw more than 15 years ago. It’s one of Clifford Odets’ lesser-known plays. I saw a production Joanne Woodward directed up in Williamstown about 16 or 17 years ago and I became obsessed with it. I worked really, really hard in trying to get a production of that done and I succeeded about three years ago and got to do that on Broadway. That was very exciting.” 3. Glengarry Glen Ross (Written by David Mamet. The 30th anniversary revival was staged at the Gerald Schoenfield Theatre on Al Pacino and Bobby Cannavale in Glengarry Glen Ross Dec. 8, 2012) “Glengarry Glen Ross just because I got the chance to work with Al [Pacino] on that. It’s an iconic role and the kind of role that every young actor grows up knowing. You learn those monologues for auditions and I did that monologue as an audition. It was really nice to come full circle and play that role on Broadway.”

A Meal Fit For A Pope

Creamy Rice with ‘Piglet’ Mushrooms Risotto con Porcini Yield: 4 servings

BY JENNIFER FAUCI

JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

When Italian celebrity chef, author and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich was asked to cook for her first papal visit from Pope Benedict XVI, she was truly honored. But when she was once again requested to cook meals for Pope Francis upon his recent New York visit in September, she was beyond blessed. “Cooking for a Pope is really something. It’s not what you expect as part of the curriculum of being a chef, but I was blessed,” said Bastianich. “When they first asked me I said sure, and I was excited but I didn’t think it was going to happen.” With the help of Angelo Vivolo of Vivolo Restaurant Group, his son, Frank, and Bastianich’s two children, Joe Bastianich and Tanya Bastianich Manuali, the chef prepared a simple, yet exquisite menu, consisting of two breakfasts, one lunch and two dinners. “The Pope stays in the nuncio’s house when he travels, so we cooked in that same setting. It was an extraordinary dinner, you go to the house and you live with the Pope,” said Bastianich of his holiness, who came into the kitchen and blessed Bastianich and her crew. “I thought since he was Argentinian, I would make a nice big piece of meat, a rib roast, and his confidant said that he wanted to stay light and watch his diet, which was OK with me.”

Lidia Bastianich prepares the rice and mushrooms for the risotto. (Photo by Lidia Celebrates America)

Pope Francis is Italian as well, so Bastianich prepared a delicious menu comprised of vegetable soup, striped bass roasted with parsley, olive oil and lemon, Maine lobster with heirloom tomatoes and burrata, the chef’s signature cacio e pere (pear and pecorino filled ravioli) and risotto con porcini e tartufi (risotto with porcini, summer truffles and Grana Padano Riserva cheese). “He loves squash so my mother, who is 95, brought things from our garden for him. It was extraordinary,” said Bastianich. Want to eat like the Pope? Try Bastianich’s recipe for Creamy Rice with ‘Piglet’ Mushrooms (Risotto con Porcini) from her book, La Cucina di Lidia.

Have Healthy Teeth and Gums for Life!

5 tbsp olive oil 1 cup minced onion 2 tbsp minced shallots 12 oz fresh porcini mushrooms, sliced 2 cups Arborio rice ½ cup dry white wine 6 ½ cups hot chicken or veal stock ½ tsp salt 2 tbsp butter, cut into bits ½ cup freshly grated Parmigiano Freshly ground pepper to taste 1. In a medium casserole, heat the olive oil and sauté the onion and shallots until golden. Add the mushrooms and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. 2. Add the rice and stir to coat it with oil. Add the wine, stir well, and add ½ cup of the hot chicken stock and the salt. 3. Cook, stirring constantly, until all the liquid has been absorbed. Continue to add hot stock in small batches (just enough to completely moisten the rice) and cook until each successive batch has been absorbed, stirring constantly, until the rice mixture is creamy and al dente. 4. Remove from the heat, beat in the butter and cheese, season with pepper to taste, and serve immediately.

BOOK REVIEW

GARDENS OF EDEN BY JENNIFER FAUCI

JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Have you ever wondered how Long Island came to be? How the “residential park phenomenon” and historic communities of Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Garden City and Great Neck made their mark on the land we call home? Gardens of Eden: Long Island Early Twentieth-Century Planned Communities is a beautifully descriptive book that details how Long Island was developed. Edited by Robert B. MacKay of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, Gardens of Eden is a page turner for the history buff, filled with classical pictures of the storied homes Long Island is known for. “I have been interested in this topic for quite some time,” said MacKay, a Cold Spring Harbor resident who has a Ph.D. in American Studies from Boston University and worked with local authors and historians on the book. “We wanted to tell the lesser-known story of the figures in Long Island history that have been overlooked,” he said. “The suburban experience was a novel thought, especially for people living in rowhouses in New York.” The book has been eight years in the making of thorough writing and research to ensure that Long Island’s early story was properly told. “Gardens of Eden is unique because the Long Island we live in today is a product of residential development of the 20th century. We’re talking about a 50 to 60 year stretch from that time period and we’re just beginning to study that phenomenon,” said MacKay. In the book, there is a chapter dedicated to “What If? Planned Communities That Might Have Been,” where authors mention several projects that never came to fruition. If they had, MacKay believes they would have impacted suburban Long Island life today. “The stock market crash was a reason as to why a lot wasn’t built. There were big plans for Lido Beach that never happened,” he said. “It’s interesting to think what might have been.” Gardens of Eden is a book of history and of hope. MacKay hopes this country book filled with historical photographs and blueprints will inspire people to respect the past. “If there was a resident who was going to tear down his country house and then saw this book, he would rethink it because he saw how special it was. The path of the future comes out of the past.” Gardens of Eden: Long Island Early Twentieth-Century Planned Communities is available for purchase on Amazon.com.

Three Things To Win BY RICH FORESTANO

RFORESTANO@ANTONMEDIAHROUP.COM

Every four years, the Giants and Jets meet in the regular season to battle for New York (or New Jersey depending on who you ask) on the gridiron during the NFL’s regular season. The Giants are on a three-game winning streak against Gang Green, topping the Jets in 2003, 2007 and 2011. Both teams have been up and down going into the Week 13 matchup. Here’s three things each team needs to do to win and push their playoff aspirations towards reality.

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (Photo courtesy of the New York Jets)

The Giants

The Jets

Score In The “Green” Zone Aptly re-named by head coach Tom Coughlin to indicate it’s go-time, the Giants must score in the red zone and stop trading touchdowns for field goal attempts. From the Giants’ clock snafu in the regular season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, to squandering a scoring opportunity after a turnover late in a 27-26 loss to the New England Patriots, the Giants have found ways to give games away more than lose them. Commanding the line of scrimmage will be key inside the five-yardline, but the G-Men will face mammoths like defensive ends Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson. The Giants are ranked 26th in offensive red zone scoring in 2015 according to teamrankings.com. Guess who’s ranked first? The Jets. Embrace The “Darkwa”-Side The Giants’ running attack has been true to the “by-committee,” but has underachieved at best. Big Blue has averaged just 3.8 yards per carry, according to the NFL.com. That’s fourth-worst in the league. As of late, Orleans Darkwa has surprisingly shown he can run northsouth the best, a staple in the Giants running scheme of years past, and is deceptively fast. To have success against the Jets’ in the passing game, establishing the run is key. I believe Darkwa can do that. Giants DBs Need To Run “Amuk” The Giants’ secondary has been a mess. And the loss of starting cornerback Prince Amukamara (who has returned) to a partially torn pectoral muscle for five weeks only further exposed New York’s weakness in the middle of the field on passing downs. If the Giants want to win, Amukamara, along with fellow defensive back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, will have to maintain Jets wideouts Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

Attack The Middle The Giants recently lost defensive line standout Jonathan Hankins with a pectoral tear (that’s three different players with a similar injury) for the season. Jets running backs Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell must succeed up the middle to open up the play-action pass for Fitzpatrick and his receivers. Running away from Jason Pierre-Paul and Robert Ayers and towards Markus Kuhn and Cullen Jenkins could prove successful against the Giants. Shadow Beckham Jr. This is no secret. When Odell Beckham Jr. is on fire, the Giants are on fire. Jets defensive backs must keep the second-year wideout from getting to the second level and force Manning to lean on hot-ornot Rueben Randle, under-utilized Shane Vereen and the recently-reunited Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks. Manning had hoped to have receiver Victor Cruz back, but was recently put on injured reserve because of a calf strain. Cruz has not played in a game since Week 6 of the 2014 season, when the Salsadancing pass catcher tore his right patella tendon against the Philadelphia Eagles. Time Their Chances The Giants passing offense is based on timing. To upset Manning, the Jets have to get in his face and have the Big Blue signal-caller throw off his back foot or into pressure up the middle. Manning has shown he misses high when off the mark to receivers, which would bode well for defensive backs like Antonio Cromartie, Darrelle Revis and Calvin Pryor. For Gang Green to win, stifling the 11-year veteran Manning on passing downs will be crucial.
