idia Bastianich has solidified herself as the grandmother of Italian cuisine. The Italian born American celebrity chef, author, restaurateur and television personality loves nothing more than spending the holidays with her family, but she is always hard at work, stretching her culinary talent and kind heart as far as she can. “I love the feeling of the table and the family being there and the kids running around,” said Bastianich of her family scene at Christmas. “Traditions and food really gives you a strong identity of who you are, identity of a clan of security, you’re part of something.” Bastianich’s two children are both very involved with their mother’s work. It’s a real family business with daughter Tanya Bastianich Manuali helping with cookbooks and son Joe Bastianich opening restaurants with another famed Italian chef, Mario Batali. “I’m blessed that my children are in the business so they can grow it and do what they want,” said Bastianich of her legacy. “My love is writing and traveling with my friends and grandkids, who as they get older get more serious about helping in the kitchen.” Speaking of Batali, the Bastianich-Batali partnership began years back, when Batali had just arrived on the culinary scene. “Mario was just coming up when I met him. He’s of Italian roots and was a force to be reckoned with,” said Bastianich of the young American chef from Seattle. “He was really passionate about Italian cooking.” Bastianich was asked by the James Beard Society to be the chef at one of the awards dinners, when she decided she wanted to enlist the help of up and coming chefs cooking Italian food. Batali was one of them. “My son, Joe, came to help at the dinner and was one of the sommeliers (he loves his wine), and he and Mario met,” said Bastianich. By that time, Bastianich already had her successful Felidia, and she and her son had Becco. “They met and I knew it would be a good match,” she said of the pair, who together, opened Babbo at 110 Waverly Pl. Perhaps one of the partnership’s biggest empires yet, is the wildly successful Eataly. The 50,000-square-foot marketplace is a miniature Italy in Manhattan,

offering everything from fresh ingredients, Italian housewares, cooking lessons and the option to dine on everything from meats and cheeses and pizza to fresh pasta and steak at several restaurants. “Eataly is growing and it’s a lot of fun,” said Bastianich of the venture, which celebrated its five year anniversary this past August at the New York location. “The World Trade Center location will be open in the spring and we opened one in Chicago two years ago, Sao Paolo Brazil last year and we’re looking at Los Angeles and Toronto. Boston is already in progress.” If you haven’t had the pleasure of entering this Italian paradise, come close with Bastianich’s latest cookbook, Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine, a culinary dictionary of sorts, providing everything a budding chef needs to know about Italian food. “The cookbook is my 10th book and it’s co-authored by my daughter, who had a lot to do with the years of research,” said Bastianich, who simplified everything she discovered and gave it to the audience. “It’s a more comfortable approach to cooking: experiences, techniques, how to buy vegetables and supplement recipes.” “I’m very proud of it. There aren’t any photographs because I wanted it to be reference book for generations and didn’t want photos to be dated,” said Bastianich. In keeping with the holiday tradition of giving back, Bastianich spoke of her work with autistic children and adults, and how she cooks with them. She is also involved in a UN organization that does fundraisers for Arrupe College, a community college for Chicago inner city kids that can’t afford to go to school. “I’m really into opening more Arupes in cities that need them. That’s the project I’m working on now,” said Bastianich. “A lot of the problems have to do with education and I would like to do what I can to help that.” For more on what Lidia and Mario are cooking up next, visit their websites at www.lidiasitaly.com and www. mariobatali.com. Joy—An Irish Christmas

Keith And Kristen Getty Bring Joy To Carnegie Hall BY MAURA VERNICE

MVERNICE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Joy—An Irish Christmas was created and produced by Keith and Kristen Getty. The Gettys— who performed a sold-out show on Dec. 11 at Carnegie Hall—are modern hymn writers and their show is a mixture of traditional Christmas songs interspersed with original Christian Christmas hymns.

The Gettys put a new spin on traditional Christmas hymns, such as O Come All Ye Faithful, Angels We Have Heard On High, Joy To The World and Hark The Herald Angels Sing, and arrange them so that they have a bluegrass sound to them. They also give all the traditional Christmas songs a distinct Celtic edge that modernizes them, yet keeps them classic. One of their best known hymns and the first they ever wrote together, In Christ Alone, has a strong Irish melody and is sung in churches throughout the world. Their songs have been recorded by many artists including Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss and Natalie Grant, among others. Kristen’s sleek, soothing voice is reminiscent of Andrea Corrs’, the singer from another musical Irish

family. The Gettys, who reside in Northern Ireland and Nashville, introduced each original song by explaining how and why it was written. Several were lullabies to their children, such as Consider the Stars and How Suddenly A Baby Cries. The Gettys were backed at Carnegie Hall by a talented group of 20 musicians, including Shannon Lambert-Ryan and Maggie White, both of whom were wearing traditional Irish step dancing shoes and

throughout the evening, danced Irish jigs and reels, at times while playing their violins. The Gettys were also backed by the Carnegie Hall Choir. Guest appearances were made by a rousing Times Square Church quartet and John Patitucci, Grammy-award winning bass player. The Gettys’ musicians had battling guitars, dueling violins and other comic elements that kept the show lively and entertaining. Kristen closed the show by reciting an Irish Blessing composed by C.S. Lewis. Joy-An Irish Christmas will be broadcast on public television this Christmas season. The Gettys have a new Christmas DVD, Joy—An Irish Christmas, that can be purchased on Amazon or at www.gettymusic.com.

The Holiday Express Pulls Into Town

BY CHRISTY HINKO

CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

The New-York Historical Society has transformed this holiday season with the installation of a spectacular exhibit of treasures from the renowned Jerni Collection, now owned by the New-York Historical Society, of model trains, scenic elements and toys. The Holiday Express exhibition unfolds over a broad swath of New-York Historical’s first floor, featuring pieces from the Jerni Collection that transform the space into a magical wonderland. With the aid of theatrical lighting, an ambient audio “soundscape” and other visual effects, visitors are engaged in an immersive experience. The exhibition begins at the West 77th Street (at Central Park West) entrance, where movement and sound from four large-scale multimedia screens will make it seem as though trains are roaring through the space. A 360-degree mountainous landscape is on view in the Judith and Howard

Hockey’s Biggest Fashion Penalties Worst uniforms: NHL Edition BY STEVE MOSCO AND DAVE GIL DE RUBIO EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

With the National Hockey League creeping up on a centennial in 1917, what better time to hold up some of the league’s worst jersey blunders. Most on this list are from when teams started trolling for revenue via alternate sweaters. But some older blunders are in here as well. Dallas Stars Nicknamed the “Mooterus” by enterprising fans for its resemblance to a certain part of the female anatomy, the Dallas Stars wore this odd sweater as a third jersey from 2003-06. Buffalo Sabres When the Buffalo Sabres overhauled their logo after the 2004-05 lockout, the fandubbed “Buffaslug” became the unofficial poster child of poor design decisions. Phoenix Coyotes Before the team hailed from greater Arizona with a far less jarring logo design, the Phoenix Coyotes presented this psychotic desert hallucination to their fans from 1998-2003. Anaheim Ducks In 1996, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim decided to go full Disney with this quackers attempt to depict some kind of super duck crashing through the ice. Not exactly well received, it was abandoned after one season.

Los Angeles Kings Also in 1996, the Los Angeles Kings took a page out of the Burger King playbook with this stately disaster of a jersey. It was enough to make hockey fans nostalgic for the garish days of purple and gold.

Montreal Canadians (above) Unlike the classic interlocking CH logo that hockey fans have come to know for decades, this monstrosity of a throwback uniform in all its stripeyness is jarring enough to have the equivalent effect that strobe lights have on people with epilepsy. It’s a barber pole on steroids and we hope it never reappears.

Tampa Bay Lightning One can only imagine the storm brewing inside of the mind of the individual that gave the go ahead to this disastrous visage. Worn as the team’s third jersey from 1996-99, it’s got rectangular rain, waves and lighting bolts on the sleeves—what could go wrong?

Vancouver Canucks A perennial pick on any Worst NHL Jerseys of All Time list, this was what Canada’s western-most team was sporting when they made their first Cup appearance in 1982. While the Islanders were quite the juggernaut, you wonder if this space-age splash of sartorial sadness didn’t wind up taking a psychic toll on the franchise and Vancouver fans at that time.

California Golden Seals While most people barely know this doomed franchise, those that do recall the uniform color scheme being a combination of Notre Dameflavored green and gold. It was when the Seals went down the teal road that they crossed the line despite the time and place of this fashion transgression being mid-1970s California.

New York Islanders While most would expect us to go with the mid-90s Gorton’s Fisherman jersey, we’ve zagged and instead went with the post-2005 lockout sweater that has all the swagger of a lovely patchwork quilt.
