Songs Lucinda Williams Loves To Cover BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
For as rightfully revered as Lucinda Williams is in being regarded the Queen of Americana, she has always been and continues to be a huge music fan. Between Williams’ insatiable love of other people’s music and the encouragement of manager/husband Tom Overby, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter has cast a net of
1
The Velvet Underground “Pale Blue Eyes” from The Velvet Underground (1969)
“I’ve always loved that song and the Velvet Underground. That album that the song comes from is one of my favorite albums of all time. I love the melody of it and the imagery.”
2
Nick Drake “Which Will” from Pink Moon (1972)
“I recorded this one...The reason for that is that I discovered him in the early ‘80s and I love all of his stuff. I actually cut that song before I recorded it [for one of my records].
It’s on another album and I don’t even know if it’s still in print. It was right after I moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s and I was asked to do a song for some tribute album that was songs from dead folk singers, people like Nick Drake and Tim Hardin.”
3
Marvin Gaye “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)” from What’s Going On (1971)
“I love doing that song. We worked up for the Occupy
rather unusual song choices she has chosen to cover over time. Whereas Williams’ early career found her going down a path of cutting songs by traditional blues and country artists like Sleepy John Estes, Hank Williams, The Carter Family and Robert Johnson, recent years have found her dipping into the non-roots rock canons of AC/ DC and The Clash. Here are five of the Louisiana native’s favorites.
Wall Street gig at the Fillmore. It’s kind of one of his protest songs and a great one at that. I love that it’s making a statement.”
4
Gnarls Barkley “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” from The Odd Couple (2008) “I love the melody of this song along with the feeling of singing it and also what it says. I also love the refrain of it.”
5
Thievery Corporation featuring Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips “Marching the Hate Machines (Into the Sun)” from The Cosmic Game (2005)
“The words are written by Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and Thievery Corporation wrote the music. I played that live with the band and I love it. Again, it’s a topical song. ‘Marching the heat machines into the sun...’ What a beautiful line. The imagery and the melody are beautiful (starts singing it)…It’s almost anthemic.” Visit www.longislandweekly.com to read a review of the new Lucinda Williams album The Ghosts of Highway 20. 1900s. The biergarten—or beer garden—is open year round and during the warm summer nights, the outdoor, open-air venue is perfect for large gatherings of friends and strangers over beer steins and German fare. There’s an indoor option as well, with Plattduetsche’s two-level indoor seating space boasting two bars, a performance stage and plenty of dining space. The newly expanded menu includes choices that one might find in a Munich Biergarten, along with traditional German favorites and some continental choices to accommodate the taste buds of all eaters. Standout menu items include many different types of wurst, homemade German potato salad and potato pancakes, giant hot pretzels, Little Bavarians (pretzel slider rolls with bratwurst, bacon and Swiss
cheese) and apple strudel. Executive Chef Herbert Aigner also features daily specials and a kids menu is available. Plattduetsche has a special beer menu, with many decidedly German offerings. See below for a small sampling of the restaurant’s brews. For a taste of the German countryside, a wise order is the Bavarian wurst sampler platter. This plate is loaded with the pork and nutmeg-laced bratwurst, the pork and veal knackwurst, beef and pork krainerwurst and the mildly spiced pork and veal bockwurst all served with sauerkraut and homemade German potato salad. The four wursts offer varied textures and spice levels, with knackwurst providing the snap and krainerwurst

Imported from Munich and measuring 10-inches across, the salty, hot and soft pretzel is served with sweet and hot mustard for dipping. Aside from providing a fix for television junkies desperate to binge watch episodes of their favorite network shows, streaming services Netflix, Amazon and Hulu also offer a fair share of critically acclaimed original programming. With quality filming, knockout performances and engaging stories, streaming services are forcing the big networks to rethink programming. Here are three must-stream shows on Netflix, Amazon and Hulu:
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Netflix Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (30 Rock), this Netflix original follows ever-optimistic cult survivor Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) as she navigates her new life in New York City. Worst Team Uniforms: NBA Edition BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
One of the most significant revenue streams for NBA teams is the lucrative profits that come from fans plunking down money for team jerseys. And not unlike in other professional leagues, National Basketball Association owners have taken this to heart and released numerous alternate unis on the market that

can be tied from everything to the military (camouflage anyone?) and Hispanic Heritage Month (Los Lakers de Los Angeles) to NASCAR (I’m looking at you Charlotte Bobcats) and even a team’s ties to a former ABA incarnation (too many to list here). To be sure, there have been plenty of crimes against style sense to parse through. These just happen to be the five most egregious.
Small forward Carmelo Anthony
Point guard Charles Jenkins 3. Toronto Raptors (1997-1999)
Everyone knows that the raptors species ran around with short arms and were not particularly jacked in that department. Aside from this logo being anatomically incorrect, it’s also been paired with a purple striped jersey that we can only hope goes the way of the dodo.

If you were recovering from an eggnog hangover, this blindingly orange ensemble sported by the Knickerbockers for a Christmas Day game may very well have had afflicted viewers racing for the bathroom.
