s one of the jewels of the Gold Coast, the Hamlet of Manhasset is a buzzing hive of arts and a variety of activities, which is pretty remarkable considering it only covers 2.4 square miles. This is well reflected in our latest edition of Manhasset Press Magazine. Editor Jennifer Fauci is one of our many contributors who gives readers a taste of Manhasset, whether it’s the profile she wrote commemorating the Manhasset Art Association’s 70th anniversary or the piece on Pulitzer Prize-winning author and town native J.R. Moehringer. Other cultural corners that we explore include Anthony Murray’s piece on the Music Institute of Long Island, Frank Rizzo’s overview of what’s going on at Mary Jane Davies Green throughout the year and Kimberly Dijkstra’s overview of spring fashion pieces being showcased at esteemed retailer St. John, which is located at the Americana. Chris Birsner also takes a look at how Manhasset appears in pop culture, whether it’s Miracle on 34th Street or The Great Gatsby. With so much going on in Manhasset, you can develop quite the appetite. Betsy Abraham highlights the oldest restaurants in the community, with a feature on Café Continental. Elizabeth Johnson, the editor of our community weekly Manhasset Press, shares what’s going on with the chamber of commerce and also contributes an in-depth feature on The Tower Foundation, a private nonprofit that has been enriching the educational experienced of the students of Manhasset schools since 1991. Long considered a high-performing district, Joe Scotchie reports on new superintendent Dr. Vincent Butera, who was appointed in September. Sports is also hugely popular in this community and to that end, Joseph Catrone sat down with Lauren Sadeh, the girls varsity basketball coach at Manhasset High School who was recently named the AA/A3 Conference Coach of the Year. One of my favorite sections is My Manhasset, where Christina Claus speaks with residents about what they find most endearing about the community they live in. This edition of Manhasset Press Magazine presents the kind of well-crafted perspective that I’m sure you’ll enjoy whether you live in Manhasset or not. Angela Susan Anton Publisher

Artistic

Reverence The Manhasset Art Association celebrates seven decades of talented artists

By Jennifer Fauci

“In 1948, a small group of Manhasset artists were invited to meet at the home of Helen Jennings, who had a dream of organizing a workshop where artists could work together to develop their talents, exchange ideas and foster a greater appreciation and advancement of the arts in the community.” That is the story of how the Manhasset Art Association (MAA) came to be. Since its inception, the MAA has been home to hundreds of local artists over the years, each beaming with pride as they see their work displayed in their hometown. Today, the association still offers workshops with live models and three major exhibits each year at local libraries and galleries. As the MAA approaches its 70-year anniversary, members look forward to continuing to foster a love of the arts, ensuring that it

always has a place in the community and in the hearts of those who create and appreciate it. Martha Klein is the current president of the MAA, and over the years, she has seen the association change from a very socially active art group into a more serious and practical one. “We present learning demonstrations with well-known experts, all day workshops in various media, and have our weekly live model workshops,” she says of what happens daily. “So, socializing is really just a byproduct of all these activities, not the focus.” Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” As most activities are during the day, the association’s membership skews is a bit older. Klein says that some members were originally

in the art world and have returned to it, while others were always interested, but never had the time. Klein has witnessed the difficulty that some have in keeping their passion alive. But sometimes all it takes is one little spark to reignite the flame. “As one ages, our priorities change because we know that time is of the essence. So, why put off the activities you’ve always been attracted to?” she asks of rediscovering a love of art. “All of the arts are a very unifying and emotionally satisfying gift. This engagement can be so engrossing that the time passes too quickly. Artists delve into their work and surprises can happen.” On the other side of the spectrum, Klein also sees the pure joy in youthful artwork, when children begin to use their creative imaginations and explore the world of paint, pastels and pencils for the first time. “Young children tend to be very spontaneous and joyful in their art work, and this is the element that adults need to recapture,” says Klein. “The most difficult part of trying something new, is just getting started. But

when you get going, the challenges and surprises are most exciting.” Members and artists of the MAA participate in different ways. Some choose to enter their work in the exhibitions while others rarely do, but Klein is proud to be at the helm of such an expansive group of artists. “We all create our art in different ways; photography, oil painting, charcoal, watercolors, pencils, etc. Many are flexible and like to try different mediums, but we all speak the same language,” she says, which is akin to the thoughts of her colleague Barbara Silbert. Silbert is the membership chairperson and former president of the Manhasset Art Association. She is also a prize-winning portrait artist and instructor who feels

Children and young adults get a sense of recognition when they produce a work of art that others find pleasing. If they win an art contest they are exalted, and that give them the impetus to keep improving. It also gives them a lifelong hobby.

—Barbara Silbert, MAA Membership Chairperson that the beauty of art should be instilled from a very young age. “I believe that art is very important for young children to experience; it gives them a sense of color, expression and enjoyment,” says Silbert of the importance of the craft. “Children and young adults get a sense of recognition when they produce a work of art that others find pleasing. If they win an art contest, they are exalted, and that gives them the impetus to keep improving. It also gives them a lifelong hobby.” The Manhasset Art Association is so vital to Manhasset as it is the only art association in the town. Silbert noted that although the group allows artists from neighboring towns to become members, Manhassetites love to view their work annually at the local library. Like many museums and art leagues, the association is entirely member/volunteer-supported. To become a member and those interested must submit three of their best paintings or

photographs to three board members to approve, which can be done online or in person. The association’s current membership is about 90 people. The MAA recently concluded an exhibit titled “On The Easel & Through the Lens,” which ran at the Great Neck Library and featured a variety of media, including photography. The next MAA group show is scheduled to be at the Manhasset Library this summer where paintings and photography will be judged by local art professors, prominent painters and gallery owners. For more information on the Manhasset Art Association, call 516-767-2087 or visit www. manhassetart.org. The Manhasset Art Association is located at 1421 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, NY.

Moehringer’s Manhasset

By Jennifer Fauci

How the author’s hometown inspired his memoir

J

ohn Joseph “J.R.” Moehringer’s way with words has circumnavigated the publishing industry. Born in New York City, Moehringer was raised in Manhasset, but returned to the city to embark on his journalism career as a news assistant for the New York Times. After moving to Colorado to work at the Rocky Mountain News, he continued west to California, landing a position at the Los Angeles Times in its Orange County bureau.

22

MANHASSET PRESS MAGAZINE

His writing didn’t go unnoticed. Moehringer was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1998, but the win eluded him until 2000, when he won the award for newspaper feature writing. The novelist and journalist is perhaps best known for his memoir, The Tender Bar. Published in 2005, it recounts his childhood being raised by a single mother through his early 20s and details his coming-of-age experiences at a local bar. Said bar is known to many Manhassetites as Publicans (previously called Dickens, and later renamed Edison’s), which served as a sanctuary away from his hectic family life. There, he was embraced by his Uncle Charlie and two men named Colt and Joey D., all of whom served as father figures in the young Moehringer’s life. The Tender Bar highlights the simple human necessity of having somewhere to escape to. For Moehringer, with an absent father and loving mother, it was a local bar that served as a refuge, where he could absorb life’s knowledge as a boy and learn to apply it as a man.

“We went there for everything we needed. We went there when thirsty, of course, and when hungry, and when dead tired. We went there when happy, to celebrate, and when sad, to sulk. We went there after weddings and funerals, for something to settle our nerves, and always for a shot of courage just before. We went there when we didn’t know what we needed, hoping someone might tell us. We went there when looking for love, or sex, or trouble, or for someone who had gone missing, because sooner or later everyone turned up there. Most of all we went there when we needed to be found.” —The Tender Bar Like many writers before him, Moehringer has ingrained himself in Long Island’s rich literary history. And no true Manhasset resident should be without a copy of The Tender Bar sitting on their bookshelf. Taking a page from Moehringer, perhaps Manhasset is just the place for quiet and thoughtful solitude from the everyday life.

Being a superintendent at any school district on Long Island is a dream job, but leading such a top-notch district as Manhasset’s is probably as close as it comes to any educator’s total fulfillment. A longtime veteran of numerous school districts in Long Island, Dr. Vincent Butera has been at the helm of the Manhasset district since July 2017. Butera has big shoes to fill as he is replacing the popular Charles Cardillo, who guided the district through years of infrastructure renovations and continued academic success. Butera is looking forward to the challenge and he is pleased to lead a district so dedicated to public education. Indeed, his first impressions of the district are glowing. “My initial impression is how impressed I am with the quality of the people in the district and their commitment to the betterment of Manhasset,” he says. “We are working with a wide array of individuals and groups to partner with the school to make it an even better place.” A native of Ridgewood, Queens, Butera has said that his third grade teacher, Mrs. Gloria Christian, influenced him greatly in her ability to inspire students to reach their potential. In high school, Butera’s favorite subject was English. He also played football and was on the school newspaper. Butera has been an educator in the New York City area for a quarter of a century.

24

MANHASSET PRESS MAGAZINE

Pursuing his love of social sciences, Butera received a BA in History from Queens College, before switching to education and obtaining an MA in Special Education also from Queens. Both Dowling College and Hofstra University were next. Butera earned a an Ed.D from Dowling College and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from Hofstra. Butera began his career in 1993 by teaching social studies in the New York City school district and later, at Huntington UFSD. His career as an administrator started in the Floral Park UFSD, where he served as an assistant principal. In 2001, Butera became an elementary principal in the Franklin Square UFSD. In 2009, he was appointed the assistant superintendent for curriculum in the Long Beach UFSD. Then it was on to the Bayport-Blue Point Superintendent, a position he held from 2012 to 2017. Butera’s career has not been confined to public schools. He has also taught at the college level, first at his alma mater, Dowling College, from 2007-09 and most recently at the College of St. Rose.

When asked about both short-term and long-term goals, Butera noted that any school district is either improving or declining, “there’s no status quo.” For Manhasset, the goal is not just a formal education, but “everything that impacts kids.” That means the curriculum and educational opportunities, but also building a professional staff and nurturing their growth. In addition, Butera is looking to renovate learning spaces, both the classroom and the entire physical structure of a school, for a “future ready” environment. In an age when so many young people feel alienated from life, all to the point of taking tragic steps, Butera is keenly aware of the need to support and nurture the social and emotional well-being of each student lucky enough to be in the district.

Spring is more than a season; it’s a feeling. Spread that feeling around by wearing lightweight dresses in the palette of spring.

The design concept for St. John at Americana gives a nod to the California coast vibe. The store has an airy feel with high ceilings, an open floor plan and a light palette, which acts as a calm backdrop for the apparel collection. Materials were carefully selected for the space, such as wood flooring that evokes beach driftwood, tile, paneled walls and polished gold details that reflect light and imbue a fresh feeling. n an age when so much is disposable, it is rare to find a brand that exudes quality the way that St. John Knits does. Founded in 1962 by Robert and Marie Gray, the company has been built on the combination of craft and couture, resulting in the simple sophisticated style women around the world desire. Marie Gray knitted her first dress back in 1962, by hand. It took her a month to complete. Then an encounter with a knitting machine inspired her to create a beautiful wardrobe for herself, much to the envy of her friends who all sought to place orders. With help from family and friends, the St. John label was born. Quality and fit was paramount to Marie and remains so for the brand today. St. John uses the highest quality wool, sourced from trustworthy suppliers. Oftentimes, yarns of different fibers are twisted together to create blends which

improves the garment’s ability to retain its shape. St. John dyes its yarn in-house with high-quality pigments to produce rich, vibrant colors. Unlike lesser brands, a single cone of yarn is used to create one garment, which ensures consistency in the fabric color and texture. A meticulous approach and high standards have made St. John into the classic American brand that it is today. Several First Ladies have donned St. John ensembles. Countless celebrities and women in the public eye gravitate to the collections, whether for daytime attire, sport apparel, evening wear, couture or accessories. At St. John in Americana Manhasset, visitors receive a personal and luxury shopping experience. The team, led by store manager Anne Santillo, will help you discover the wardrobe that best suits you, no matter what the occasion.

Tower Heats It Up With

By Elizabeth Johnson

E

voking the warmth and vibrancy of 1950s Old Havana, the Tower Foundation of Manhasset transformed Plandome Country Club into an eye-catching Cuban mise en scene for their 2018 dinner dance, Havana Nights. The fundraiser was the hottest ticket in Manhasset, selling out within 10 days. The vision of the evening took the more than 400 guests, including school administrators, out of the cold winter night and transported them back in time to the golden era of Havana’s iconic hot spot, the Tropicana Club. Revelers got into the spirit of the evening thanks to fabulous live music and elaborately costumed dancers, authentic Cuban cuisine and a distinctive handrolled cigar bar. “It is a wonderful event that brings the community together for a worthy cause,” says Angelic Durante. Incredible raffle prizes were up for grabs, as well as a stunning array of silent-auction items, including tickets to numerous unforgettable experiences such as a taping of The Voice, Justin Timberlake concert tickets and several hot Broadway shows. There was a Tesla Model S for kids or for the world traveler, a threenight stay in Athens, Greece. Proceeds from the highly successful evening will benefit Manhasset schools. “They have the best interest of our students [in mind],”says Manhasset School Board president Regina Rule.

The Tower Foundation is in its 27th year of serving the Manhasset school community through initiatives and gifts such as the introduction of interactive SMART Boards, a comprehensive remodeling of the high school library and the implementation of the innovative zSpace 3D Interactive Labs, which are designed to greatly enhance the students’ educational experience. Micheal and Jessica Qualter support the Tower Foundation and like the focus on STEM. “The overwhelming generosity of our sponsors, donors, benefactors and event attendees is what makes the Tower Foundation such a success,” marvels co-presidents Jodi Mondiello and Jeremy Shao. “The entire Tower Board and community are thankful for your support and shared faith and vision.” The evening was everything that was promised and guests danced into the wee hours of the night. The Manhasset Chamber Evolves

Beautification Corn Stalks Flags

By Elizabeth Johnson The Manhasset Chamber of Commerce was established in January 1935 as a means of obtaining improved business conditions in Manhasset. Arthur J. Deering, a prominent real estate broker, was the first chairman. Today, Manhasset resident T.J. Costello, owner of Hierarchy Architects, and Stephanie Solomon, owner of Chocolate Works, are the co-presidents of the 2018 Manhasset Chamber of Commerce, working with committee members to continue this important mission. The dynamics of business have changed as well as the physical presence with the help of the Internet. As businesses have changed, so has the chamber, with the introduction of a new level of membership offered called Beautify Manhasset. The chamber has always been at the forefront of beautifying Manhasset. With the “Welcome To Manhasset” sign at Mary Jane Davies Park, co-sponsored with the Manhasset Greater Civic Association and the Adopt-A-Pole campaign, which pays for the hanging baskets located on the poles of Plandome Road, the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce wants to welcome all who live, visit and work here. Donations are sought annually to

transform Plandome Road with flowers in all its splendor. The Beautify Manhasset membership that is offered to the public for $45 enables the chamber to decorate for the fall and winter and plant flowers and foliage in the new planters which decorate the road. Energies for the vast undertaking are under the leadership of the chamber’s Beautification committee. With the invaluable assistance of the Town of North Hempstead to keep the hanging plants and now the new planters watered and blooming throughout the season, Plandome Road is a definite destination. The chamber educates its membership by inviting government officials to meetings. The Town of North Hempstead Building Department officials were invited to speak recently. Deputy Commissioner Glenn Norjen and Supervisor Judi Bosworth’s Residents Advocate Lauren Summa spoke to business owners and residents regarding the role and responsibilities of the building department. The Deputy Commissioner clarified that Plandome Road is a Town of North Hempstead road in business “B” district. Northern Boulevard is a New York State road, in business “A” district.

Congregational Nursery School Celebrates 60 Years Operating as a Community Preschool.

Congregational Nursery School, located at 1845 Northern Blvd. in Manhasset, (right across from the Apple Store), has a few more openings for September 2017 in our 2’s separation classes, Pre-K classes and early 5’s class. Our Pre-K and early 5’s classes include yoga and Fun Day Monday! Afternoon enrichment classes available as well! Congregational Nursery School is celebrating their 60th year operating as a community preschool. If you ask one of our graduates about their preschool experience they will tell you that they “played a lot” and missed their playtime when they went off to kindergarten. Our philosophy is “learning through play,” which has withstood the test of time. This natural approach to learning through play is the cornerstone of Congregational Nursery School. Our program is designed to guide the developing child toward the important concepts of sharing, respect and recognition of each other’s feelings while participating in a group environment. Our activities promote creative thinking, self-respect, responsibility and good citizenship. While we embrace the new technology that has made

our lives so much easier, we feel our students need to be immersed in socialization skills, not their iPads. We are focused on pre-reading, pre-writing and language activities that all lead to kindergarten readiness. We have seen learning theories come and go with the most recent “new” standard being the Pre-K Common Core Standard. The approach to learning (Domain 1) is “engaging students in play as a means of exploration and learning.” So the “new standard” is what we have been doing for 60 years! Our program times are as follows: • The 2’s separation program is Tues/Thurs or Wed/Fri from 9 to 11 adding Monday as an optional morning. • The 3’s program is four days per week (Tuesday through Friday) from 9:00-12:00. • The 4’s and early 5’s program are five days per week (Monday through Friday) from 9am-12pm. • Our enrichment program for all Pre-K students is 1pm to 3pm. Children need time to laugh, explore, experiment and create as they begin their educational journey. We would love to be part of that journey!

“The chamber encourages people to shop local and foster personal relationships to allow for repeat business and referrals,” says Stephanie Solomon. The chamber also hears the Manhasset’s business community voice by holding breakfasts, lunches in the park and the fabulously successful business card exchanges. “Manhasset was built on these independent businesses and they need our support,” says longtime chamber member Katie Miller. Promoting shop small, shop local, every store, merchant and business owner is invited to be a part of this powerful homegrown organization which partners with an even larger and more powerful organization, the Nassau County Chambers of Commerce, each year selecting a business which would be named Business of the Year. aving been instilled with a love of music and a foundation of education from their parents, directors of the Music Institute of Long Island, sisters Geri and Carol Kushner, have been dedicated to the art of music and the community of Manhasset for the past 28 years. Before opening the musical institution in 1990, Geri and Carol were teaching music to children from out of their parent’s basement. “We would teach on one or two days and it was too much for my parents, so we decided to try and find a place to start our school somewhere else,” says Geri Kushner. “That was the impetus to move out.”

The Music Institute of Long Island offers a vast variety of musical instruction. Piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola and cello are all offered as well as voice lessons. All of these instruments are taught to students from top notch instructors. “They are all great musicians,” says Geri. “They are able to teach all levels and all ages. They’re very caring and they do it because they love it, not just because it’s a day to fill their schedule.” Geri says that most of her instructors have their master’s degree in music while a couple of instructors have their PhDs in music, music performance and music education. “Top notch instructors are what we seek,” explains Geri. The Music Institute of Long Island also offers chamber music and group classes. The institute has students perform in solo and group recitals and often sends them to music competitions where students usually come in first place, receiving great prizes. Geri says Manhasset is the perfect type of community to have their music institution because parents are interested in so many different avenues. “I think they want to educate their children and give them the best,” says Geri. “They want them to succeed and giving them quality music instruction does that in so many ways because it’s learning which is also discipline. We have a lot of multitalented kids and it [music] gives them a lot of selfworth and accomplishment and they feel proud about themselves.” Most of Geri’s students go on to great colleges like the Long Island School for the Gifted, Cornell University, Harvard Law School and the University of Chicago. Besides the top notch instructors who teach at the music institute, the Kushner sisters have an impressive background in music themselves. Geri received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in music performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and Stony Brook University, respectively. She holds both New York State and New York City teacher certifications for grades kindergarten through 12th and received her Suzuki certificate from the School for Strings. She also toured Japan with the New York Philharmonic players. Carol received her bachelor’s degree from Manhattan School of Music and received her master’s degree from the Aaron

Copland School of Music at Queens College for music performance. Like her sister, Carol is also Suzuki certified, has performed in Europe and has toured with various opera companies. Every year, the Music Institute of Long Island takes its students to communities who have less. “We go to a couple nursing homes and we go to the cerebral palsy center,” explains Geri. “We have a couple of kids give up their day because we go to Roosevelt and perform for the clients there, one being our brother who has cerebral palsy, so that’s very close to our heart.” Geri says that she and Carol believe in giving back to those who are less fortunate because they were raised by parents who would often tell them that if their brother can do it, so can they. On June 25, the students at the music institute are heading to Carnegie Hall for their big recital. The institute has several recitals throughout the year and also has solo recitals for students. The Music Institute of Long Island has also won numerous awards.

“We’ve also been on television for the Festival of Trees, which is a fundraiser for cerebral palsy,” says Geri. “My sister and I donate a lot of our services. We used to play as a quartet or duo for cerebral palsy but then we started bringing in our students.” For incoming students, there are some prerequisites. One of them is being toilet trained for students who are 3 years old. “If they’re really young, the parent has to help out and oversee the practicing because a 3-year-old isn’t going to practice by themselves,” explains Geri. “We invite them to come and watch and be a part of the lesson. They have to have an instrument at their home too. We feel them out to see if they’re really interested or not. We love it and we want them to love it.” To Geri, the students are like family to her and Carol. “We love it,” she says. “The kids love it. We are family. I don’t know every student, but I know a lot of them and they come back. Some of them perform at recitals and we’re still in touch with families today.”

afé Continental is one of Manhasset’s oldest restaurants, serving up culinary delights on the Miracle Mile since 1964. With a five-decade history behind the restaurant, owner Michael Marriotti said he has the pleasure of serving generations of families. “It feels really good and is a responsibility we take seriously. from our community,” says Marriotti, who took over the Manhasset mainstay in 1986. “The [previous owners] set a high standard and we want to carry that through.” Not only is the clientele loyal but the staff is as well. “Everyone is very warm and friendly, customer service is one of the most important things in our restaurant,” notes Marriotti. “It’s really a family atmosphere.” Regardless of how many customers are in the inviting 75-seat dining room, staff are known for being attentive, friendly and

helpful. They’re also happy to share their knowledge on the northern Italian fare, which is delightfully fresh and all made in-house. The menu features all the best in northern Italian cuisine, with fresh homemade pasta and a tried and true sauce recipe that’s been in use for 20 years. Popular dishes include the Fiore Ragu, featuring flower-shaped pasta in a tender and flavorful veal sauce; the Paglia e Fieno, a green and white spaghetti with a delicious smoky flavor courtesy of pancetta; and whole grilled branzino, a two-pound delicacy grilled to perfection and bursting with flavor. Other Café Continental staples include the veal saltimbocca and veal chops, as well as the gnocchi pesto. The eatery’s food and service speaks for itself, as word of mouth is its main form of advertising. “Our return rate is phenomenal, it’s not a one and done restaurant, it’s regulars,” he says. “And we still have people discovering it which is nice because it’s all through word of mouth. People who move into the neighborhood get sent to us because people have talked about us and their experience.” Café Continental is at 1538 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset; 516-627-4269; www.cafecontinentalmanhasset.com.

Manhasset Dining Guide

n the restaurant world, time is the ultimate test of quality. While Manhasset boasts many restaurants, few can say they’ve been around to serve generations of diners. But for Villa Milano, La Coquille and Louie’s, it’s a badge of honor they can wear with pride. There’s a reason customers keep coming back; these eateries have perfected not only their fare, but their service, making every guest feel welcome. Here’s a closer look at the area eateries that have only gotten better with age.

La Coquille Dating back to 1969, La Coquille has mastered the art of offering something for everyone. The restaurant has done a flawless job of honoring time-honored traditions while also incorporating modern concepts to attract new diners. The elegant and quaint dining room serves up European fare with French inspirations, including duck à l’orange, foie gras and baked escargot. In Nuvoqi, the upscale bar, diners can enjoy small plates like artisan smoked salmon, peking duck crisp, French sliders and tiny crab cakes while sipping on delicious cocktails. Attention to detail is paramount, with all food and desserts made onsite daily, ensuring that every course is perfect. Louie’s When it comes to diners, Louie’s is one of the best. The classic Greek-American diner has been serving customers from Manhasset and beyond since 1963 in its Plandome Road location. The family-run eatery offers breakfast staples such as omelets, wraps, Belgian waffles, French toast and pancakes, as well as lunch favorites ranging from burgers, gyros and a variety of salads. Chefs get more creative with the dinner menu, which features salmon, crab cakes, roasts and Italian and Greek specialties. Perfect for brunch with friends, a family dinner or mid-week lunch, Louie’s is a great place to find some of your favorite dishes done right. Louie’s is located at 339 Plandome Road, Manhasset; 516-627-0022; www.louies manhassetrestaurant.com.

Villa Milano Villa Milano has been serving up slices of cheesy goodness for more than 40 years. The handmade pizza stands out for its fresh, flavorful sauce and thin crust, while guests also rave about the Sicilian slices, which feature perfectly baked crispy crusts and fresh cheese. But more than just a pizza joint, Villa Milano has a reputation for serving up high quality, flavorful Italian dishes. Among guest favorites are penne alla vodka, chicken Parmesan and penne alla milano. In addition to a pizza storefront, a restaurant in the back allows guests to sit back and relax in an old-world Italian setting. Setting the Italian eatery apart from others in the area is the live music on weekends. Villa Milano is located at 168 Plandome Road, Manhasset; 516-3653440; www.villamilanomanhasset.com.

ocal parks are usually named for retired (or deceased) politicians and community leaders, or those who fell in battle, or emergency responders who were victims of the September 11 attacks. But naming one for a “gadfly”? That was the adjective attached to Manhasset’s Mary Jane Davies. And if her spirit haunts the 1.4-acre park on Plandome Road named in her honor, then it has a good vantage point: situated diagonally across from the Town Hall, the place she haunted for decades. Davies was a constant presence at the Town of North Hempstead Town Board meetings, and on at least two occasions, ran for a town council seat on the Conservative line. One newspaper account described her as a “Town Hall gadfly with legendary knowledge of the zoning code.” “Longtime board watcher” was another appellation that frequently preceded her name in newspaper archives. She had been a registered Republican, but in a campaign statement published in a 1977 issue of the Manhasset Press she stated, “I left the Republican Party in Nassau because it is totally ruled by Joseph Margiotta and his patronage fed robots.”

A civic activist, Davies was president of the Norgate Civic Association and zoning chairman of the Council of Greater Manhasset Civic Associations, among other associations. Oasis On A Main Street Centrally located—indeed, it is the only park in the hamlet proper—the Green features lots of trees, walking trails, a gazebo and a large children’s playground with a water spray pad. The town will spend $250,000 during its current capital plan to renovate the playground. It is a center of activities, with the gazebo serving as a popular spot for wedding photos and an annual town-sponsored Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The gazebo also serves as the stage for a popular summer concert series. Visit www.northhempsteadny. gov for updates on the lineup. Dogs are allowed, though of course they must be leashed and cleaned up after. Bounded by Manhasset Avenue on the north and Memorial Place on the south, the property was once home to the Plandome Road School, a large brick structure erected in 1915 and torn down decades later to make way for the Manhasset Village Green.

anhasset is not a world-famous town by any means. However, it has gotten its fair share of attention in popular culture, from movies on the big screen to literature in bookstores. It’s fun to look at where Manhasset has popped up on these mediums, especially if you are a longtime resident of the town. 60

Miracle on 34th Street

One of the most iconic mentions of Manhasset was in the 1947 classic film Miracle on 34th Street. Early in the movie, Fred tells Kris Kringle that he has always wanted to live in “one of those junior partner deals around Manhasset.” Susan, Fred’s daughter, shows Kris a drawing of the home that she wants and tells him she’ll believe he’s the real Santa if he gets her this house. After Fred helps Kris win his trial, Kris gives them directions home that will “help them beat traffic,” but instead leads them to the home Susan has been dreaming of. While the house they found was actually a house in Port Washington, the fact that Manhasset was the ideal location for the protagonists in this movie is a big endorsement.

Saturday Night Live The sketch comedy show has long been about going outside the box to poke fun at pop culture, and when they decided to go after Woody Allen’s hit film Manhattan, they started by moving the setting of the film out east. The sketch was called “Manhasset,” which spoofed the film’s plot and was shot in the same style as the Academy Award-nominated movie. It included shots of Manhasset’s shopping district, the Miracle Mile.

The Great Gatsby

The classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald takes place in New York City and on Long Island. Specifically, the two areas on Long Island the characters spend the most time on are referred to as “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the book. The body of water that separated these two areas, split up by whether the citizens living there were newly rich or always been rich, was based on the Manhasset Bay. Fitzgerald got the inspiration to use Manhasset Bay as the setting from seeing the eastern shore of the cove, where Port Washington sits.

Other mentions of Manhasset

Manhasset has also gotten its fair amount of shoutouts on TV Shows. Everybody Loves Raymond, a Long Island sitcom staple, is known for throwing in Long Island Easter eggs in its episodes. In Season 1, Episode 3 “I Wish I Were Gus,” it is revealed that Uncle Gus, whose funeral is the setting of the episode, worked at Carpet World in Manhasset. Another New York-based sitcom, Will & Grace, had a Manhasset mention. In Season 7, Episode 17 “The Fabulous Baker Boy,” Karen, one of the lead characters, says she wanted to fly to Manhasset to visit Fortunoff’s. Of course, there is no Fortunoff in the town. And in the short-lived drama Revenge, the main character, Emily Porter, visits a place called “New Mercy Hospital” that is said to be located in Manhasset. Manhasset has been a part of Hollywood films and books for years and it’s only a matter of time before it pops up again.

or someone who subscribes to the theory that winning isn’t everything, Manhasset High School girls varsity basketball coach Lauren Sadeh sure has done a lot of it over the past year. With the Indians having excelled to an 18-2 finish in the 2017-18 season—after several years in a transitional mode—Sadeh, whose determination, poise and gift for building strong player-coach bonds had often been noted informally by those around her, was finally given official recognition in the form of the AA/A3 Conference Coach of the Year award. “I’m obviously honored and flattered,” Sadeh reflects. “I was one of eight selections and—it was funny—usually there’s a secret ballot, but when we went to the meeting, one of the coaches said, ‘Do we even need to vote for this one?’ That was really nice.” Part of what made the choice such a no-brainer for Sadeh’s peers was the remarkable turnaround her team managed to pull off. Following a 5-13 finish two seasons ago, the Indians brought up three eighth-graders to the varsity squad and braced themselves for what was to be a rebuilding season. “We knew we’d be a very young team,” says Sadeh, who just wrapped up her seventh season as head coach

That was a big deal, to win in double overtime, it was kind of a game-changer. After that, we never looked back—we won 18 in a row. It was pretty amazing to win in that fashion and to progress and keep getting better. We were very excited.

of the girls varsity basketball team, having spent one additional season as an assistant. “Going into this year, those eighth-graders were now freshmen, and we had two sophomores. I just tried to reassure them that if they’d buy in and keep doing what they had to do, we’d be fine.” The season opener against Farmingdale, which Sadeh called a “good test,” was a valiant effort, which the team “lost by eight, played a good game but just couldn’t get over the hump.” It wasn’t until Manhasset’s second game, a thrilling victory against Port Washington, that the team began to click on all cylinders. Sadeh, who teaches 10th-grade health at Manhasset High School, identifies her ability to connect with her student-athletes as one of her defining characteristics as a coach. It’s an attribute that has not only helped Sadeh recruit high-caliber student-athletes to play basketball, but has also inspired her players to be at their best game-in and game-out. “I’ve managed to maintain great relationships with my players over the years, just creating an environment where they’re comfortable and not scared,” says Sadeh, who added that she doesn’t subscribe to the theory that the loudest coach is the most effective coach. “I don’t believe that works. I try to create an environment that isn’t all about winning. Winning is a bonus. I think that the girls start to understand their roles and that not everyone can be a leading

scorer. It’s important to keep it fun.” “This past year you could definitely see that the girls liked each other, learned and had fun,” agrees Jim Amen, Jr., director of physical education, athletics and health services for the Manhasset School District. “[Sadeh] created a positive experience for her team. They wanted to win for themselves, but they also wanted to win for their coach.” In reflecting on how the Manhasset Girls Varsity Basketball program has evolved during her tenure, Sadeh is proud that she’s managed to make strides in convincing top athletes who would normally take the winter season off—especially lacrosse players—that investing time in basketball is a worthwhile endeavor. She also relishes the thought of continuing to build lasting bonds with student-athletes, some of which will continue after graduation, when they return as alumni to support their old team. But however special her past and future as a coach, there’s something about the present moment for Sadeh that’s unlike anything she’s ever experienced. “This was probably one of the most rewarding years for me as a coach, and not just because of our record. I’ve never coached a group of girls who enjoy each other this much. When you coach high school girls, personalities can clash…this year, there were no wrinkles in anything,” Sadeh says. “It was just such a fun team. I was sorry to let this season go.”

Wild, hot, roaring, and free, the Jazz Age is immediately identified as the decadent heyday of such heroes as Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Cole Porter, Josephine Baker, e.e. cummings, Langston Hughes and other rebels who would “live it up to write it down” in New York, Paris and the Riviera. The gang’s all here in one multimedia exhibition that combines art, literature and music. Explore the masterpieces and experiments of a generation that changed the history of Modernism. The giants among the artists of the Twenties were Picasso, Léger, Miro, Gaston Lachaise, Stuart Davis, Florine Stettheimer and Tamara de Lempicka. Composers such as Gershwin and Porter were taking syncopation and the blues to new heights, while the Ballets Russes broke all dance conventions. The literature of the era included such masterworks as James Joyce’s Ulysses and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which was begun in nearby Great Neck and inspired in part by a painting by Francis Cugat that is one of the highlights of the show. A gallery dedicated to the super-heroes of the age includes memorabilia related to Lindbergh and the original Hobey Baker trophy, college hockey’s highest honor named for a World War I flying ace who was the real-life inspiration for some of Fitzgerald’s characters. With powerful paintings and sculpture, intimate drawings (some never before exhibited), bold posters, sheet music, fashion, eye-dazzling jewelry, sleek furniture, and musical instruments (including Victrola turntables and a piano playing Gershwin’s own piano rolls), the exhibition brings the Jazz Age vividly to life. “Living well is the best revenge” was the motto of an extraordinarily fortunate generation, anything but “lost,” that remains today the epitome of sheer creative freedom. The exhibition has been underwritten by a generous gift from Americana Manhasset and Wheatley Plaza, with additional funding provided by the Ritz-Carlton Residences and Charles Scribner III. ocated less than 20 miles from Manhattan, Manhasset is home to the Plandomes including Plandome, Plandome Manor and Plandome Heights, Munsey Park, North Hills and Flower Hill. Featured in films like Miracle on 34th Street and The Wolf of Wall Street, on television favorites like Saturday Night Live and Everybody Loves Raymond and most notably known for being referred to as “East Egg” in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Manhasset houses the Americana Manhasset and the Miracle Mile portion, which is referred to in Billy Joel’s hit “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me.” While Manhasset is known for its famous features, residents know Manhasset for its bustling Plandome Road, family-friendly Mary Jane Davies Green and excellent school district. Residents explained for themselves why Manhasset was so special to them.

Dr. Vincent Butera, Superintendent of Manhasset Schools “The Manhasset community and school district is unique. Not unlike most successful organizations, there is a commitment among staff, parents, and community members to continue to find ways to strengthen the experience for each and every child fortunate enough to be able to call Manhasset their home.”

Elizabeth Johnson, Manhasset Press Editor “Manhasset is a special place. It is full of proud people who have worked hard to make it a special place. The people value the hometown spirit and beauty of the town with Plandome Road being Main Street USA and Northern Boulevard being glamorous like Fifth Avenue in New York City.
