Though the real estate market in recent times has seemed to be almost as frenzied and variable as the stock market, I take a long-range view. I believe in property as a long-term investment and one that will always appreciate in value. Taking a long-range view with my customers and clients has proved equally rewarding. I take it as my personal challenge to master the ever-evolving economics of real estate for every possible situation in life. It is so great to see all phases come in to play: young families buying their first homes; others trading up; those who now find their “nests” empty looking to downsize, and others looking perhaps to invest in a second home or income property. Being a trusted advisor is the role I appreciate most.

In this challenging economy, many successful families are in complex financial situations or are just unhappy with the advice they are receiving from their financial advisor(s)—it’s not uncommon. We have found that a majority of high net worth investors would value a second opinion on their finances. In order to help people achieve their financial goals, we have created our complimentary Second Opinion Service. We are pleased to offer you and your family the same knowledge and guidance that the clients of Palumbo Wealth Management Group have come to expect.
Working with a team that redefines wealth management Ask investors to define wealth management. Actually, ask “wealth managers” to do so. You’ll almost certainly get different answers, and most are likely to be heavily focused on investing. As a client of Palumbo Wealth Management Group however, you benefit from a disciplined, experienced team that has a clear and comprehensive vision of wealth management.
Our consultative process We approach each new engagement with a time-tested, collaborative process. This allows us to have an open dialogue in which we learn about your values and goals, while working with you to tailor a plan to help meet them.
What to expect from the Second Opinion Service Our first meeting will be a discovery meeting, which is focused on gaining a clear, in-depth understanding of your values and goals. After the meeting is concluded, our team will conduct a comprehensive analysis of your current situation to identify any gaps in your current plan. We will then invite you back for a second meeting where we will address any issues that we identified through our analysis, as well as some solutions to consider. Hopefully, we can confirm you are on track to meet your goals. If needed, we will suggest ways in which we can help, including recommending someone else if we are not a good fit for your needs. Either way, you will receive both a Total Client Profile and personalized analysis of your current situation—a value in excess of $5,000.

Welcome to Manhasset Magazine
T
his community has always had an air of sophistication and savviness that resonates through all 2.4-square miles that make up Manhasset. For this edition of Manhasset Magazine, we talk about what’s going on at the Miracle Mile, one of the country’s premier shopping venues. Kimberly Dijkstra writes about where to find some of the latest trends in must-have accessories that include florals, neutrals and denim. Meanwhile, Mara Bollettieri takes a look at some of the retailers that are expanding, starting with the Lord & Taylor location that was originally founded in 1941 and is expanding by 39,000-square feet to more than 122,000-square feet—with the ladies’ shoe department nearly doubling in size. Mara also highlights what’s on at the Americana Manhasset and how retailers like Bottega going Veneta, Hermès, MRKT Hirshleifers and Louis Vuitton are increasing floor plans to satisfy consumers’ luxury wants and needs. their You can develop a real appetite while shopping, so it’s a good thing that Alexandra Civorelli spotlights local restaurants that offer various cuisines including French (La Coquille), Pan-Asian (Pearl East), Greek (Mykonos), Italian (Stresa) or Japanese (Misaki). With wedding season upon us, Jennifer Fauci shares how our hamlet has become a destination for brides, thanks to boutiques like Macy’s Bridal Salon by Demetrios, Christie Lauren and The Wedding Salon of Manhasset, which feature some of the most sought-after designers. If you need bouquets for your nuptials, Abraham shares a piece on florist Olive Duntley, a local Betsy institution that’s been in business for more than five decades and has helped lift people’s spirits for happy and sad occasions. And, if you’re looking to get in shape for your big day, Rachel Hirschheimer gives you local options for everyone’s exercise needs Creating timeless design for your home. by profiling Pure Barre, Manhasset Fitness Center, Susan Urban Fitness and The Fitness Loft. THE BIGGER, THE BETTER Miracle Mile stores are expanding to satisfy discerning shoppers By Mara Bollettieri

he Miracle Mile’s name came about in the late ’40s/early ’50s with the suburban launch of three grand New York department stores on Northern Boulevard, giving the strip of luxury shops the feel of the city’s Fifth Avenue. Lord & Taylor, known as the first and oldest branch department store in North America, introduced itself to the Island when it opened its doors on Northern Boulevard in 1941. This was the first annex of an upmarket department store chain in the area, and Lord & Taylor is not only responsible for giving the Miracle Mile its name, but also the stellar reputation it has to this day. The iconic luxury store has recently begun to expand and is currently under renovation to provide shoppers with an even more extravagant experience. An anchor of the Miracle Mile is the 220,000-square-foot high-end Americana Manhasset shopping center, which began in 1956 when the masonry contract firm Gerace & Castagna, Inc., established in 1922, bought the land. In the early 1980s, the current owner of the property, Frank Castagna—chairman of Castagna Realty Co., Inc., and the son of original founder Ferdinand Castagna—wanted to offer guests upscale boutiques that would parallel those in Manhattan, Milan and Paris. Peter Marino then began redesigning the lavish plaza we know today, which just celebrated its 60th anniversary. With more than 60 shops, the open-air Gold Coast emporium provides the ultimate retail experience. High-end shops, upscale eateries, and personal-shopper and concierge services solidify the Americana’s reputation as the destination for consumers’ luxurious wants and needs.

THE BIGGER, THE BETTER
In late 2015, four of its stores, Bottega Veneta, Hermès, MRKT Hirshleifers and Louis Vuitton, were expanded to give shoppers an even more deluxe experience. These upgrades and renovations introduced a fresh look and helped retain the area’s appeal with internationally renowned designer stores. “Our brands recognize that the Americana client desires expanded product selections as well [as a] wider breadth of categories. Men’s collections have become increasingly important, and Louis Vuitton responded by introducing men’s ready-to-wear for the first time in its flagship Americana boutique,” says Deidre Costa Major, president of Castagna Realty Retail Group. “Our Hermès shop now boasts a 1,500-square-foot Art de Vivre home collection as well as a dedicated Saint-Louis crystal boutique, creating a full lifestyle experience.” Like fine wine, the retailers on the Miracle Mile only get better with age. Here’s the latest on the expanding shops. LORD & TAYLOR With high-end products from top designers in men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, shoes, jewelry/accessories, handbags, home and travel, Lord & Taylor is the ultimate department store. It’s no wonder that this store, which was founded in 1826, has thrived in this location for the past 75 years. Not only does the retailer offer the best brands, but the department store is also home to a restaurant (Sarabeth’s, featured on page 36), a beauty salon and personal shopping services. In January, the store began its renovation and expansion project, which is expected to take two years. Once the project is complete, the free-standing store will increase its size by 39,000-square feet to more than 122,000-square feet, add upgraded services and new finishes, and have a more intuitive flow. New features will include a ladies’ shoe department that will nearly double in size from 5,700- to 10,500-square feet; upgrades to floors, lighting, fixtures and hardware, refreshed fitting rooms, new service desks and a new personal shopping office. “Lord & Taylor is delighted to be adding to our footprint on Long Island, where we have a long history and loyal customers,” says Liz Rodbell, president of Lord & Taylor and Hudson’s Bay. “Elevating the design of Manhasset will allow Lord & Taylor to better serve the community and deliver an exciting experience to customers for years to come.” Another focus of the reconstruction project is to create a main entrance at the back of the store, next to the parking lot close to Shelter Rock Road. The new entryway will be twice as tall and feature two-story high windows, enveloping the entrance with natural light.

Lord & Taylor is located at 1440 Northern Boulevard; 516-627-3000. BOTTEGA VENETA This high-end Italian boutique, pictured on the previous page, offers an extensive collection of bags, small leather goods, shoes, jewelry, fragrances and ready-to-wear apparel for both men and women. HERMÈS This lavish French designer now boasts enlarged areas for women’s and men’s ready-to-wear fashion, handbags, scarves, fine jewelry and timepieces, fragrances, accessories for both men and women and, of course, the equestrian collection. The store expansion, which more than doubled its original size, was completed in December 2015. The now 6,100-square-foot space stunningly embodies the luxurious brand. The Art de Vivre home collection area now fills 1,500-square feet and includes a unique showroom featuring Hermès furniture, wallpaper and fabric displays. A dedicated Saint-Louis boutique showcasing lighting, crystal and barware is one of only three in the country. Hermès is located at 1988 Northern Boulevard; 516-869-6660. MRKT HIRSHLEIFERS A new concept boutique from the Hirshleifers Retail Group, MRKT features the hottest fashions for both men and women. With its expansion in October 2015, the new MRKT is an enlargement of the original Men’s Market, which opened in 2012. MRKT boasts that it’s a “modern exhibition space” that carries clothes from the best up-and-coming designers as well as limitededition products. Human Made, Adidas, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Hood By Air, Just Don, Amiri, Chrome Hearts, Balmain and many other names can be found at the store. MRKT Hirshleifers is at 2080 Northern Boulevard; 516-627-3566. LOUIS VUITTON One of the world’s most prominent international fashion houses, Louis Vuitton debuted its expansion in December 2015. The newly expanded store now greets guests with a Venetian plaster showcase wall that carries women’s leather goods and an adjoining wall with a personalization station. And a new hot-stamping machine is housed directly beneath the colorful signature luggage-tag presentation wall. Designed by Peter Marino, the significantly enlarged store also features a glass cube interior and facade, which boasts a unique ceiling that cascades from a dramatic two-story high entrance to more intimate, salon-like space. The renovated flagship now features expanded offerings, including women’s ready-to-wear clothing and leather goods, men’s and women’s shoes and sunglasses, timepieces and accessories, plus the introduction of men’s ready-to-wear apparel. Louis Vuitton is located at 2120 Northern Boulevard; 516-365-4766. So, if you’re looking for that special something, you’re sure to find a little magic on the Miracle Mile.

Three of Pure Barre’s 200 locations, including Manhasset and nearby Huntington and Oceanside, offer 55-minute classes. Each class works the abdominals, arms and other muscle groups with small repetitive isometric movements.

“It’s the fastest, most-effective way to change your body,” according to Pure Barre. It may take a few classes to get the hang of its method, but the new workout plans keep exercisers hooked. At Pure Barre, no two classes are ever the same for clients, allowing them to explore challenging new workouts each time. There is absolutely no dance experience required. Participants just need to be able to hold onto a ballet barre, relax and have fun. For anyone looking to transform their body, their best bet is to take at least three to four classes a week. Pure Barre is located at 1681 Northern Boulevard. For more information, check its website at www.pure barre.com/ny-manhasset or call 516-365-9090.

Macy’s Bridal Salon by Demetrios “Manhasset is the perfect place for brides to shop because it’s luxurious living but outside of the city, so you avoid the hustle and bustle. It’s a much more personalized service experience,” says Store Manager Charmaine Adams, who’s been at the Macy’s Bridal Salon by Demetrios for the past five years. “It’s very relaxed in Manhasset. We want our brides to be happy.” According to Adams, the focus of spring and summer wedding gowns have brides asking for fit and flare styles, and backless or illusion-back necklines, which were favorites of last season. “The same standard fabrics like tulle and soft organza, as well as lace and
beaded dresses, are also popular,” she adds. Macy’s Bridal Salon has gowns starting at $1,400, but they can run as high as $4,500 with an average price of $2,200. The salon only carries gowns by designer Demetrios, known for luxurious fabric, opulent embellishments and strong attention to detail. Appointments are recommended but not necessary at the salon, which is located at 1100 Northern Boulevard and open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 516-869-0391. I always recommend picking out a headpiece first, and then jewelry is easier to choose.” Lauren’s brides are selecting chandelier earrings, side combs, big statement pieces, or simple drop earrings or studs and a beautiful tiara. “Don’t cut yourself short. Start looking six months prior to when you come in, that way you don’t feel pressured,” says Lauren. “I give three-month delivery and book every appointment. Brides can come in and try on my entire collection. I pin their hair to how they want it on the day. Bridal accessories have become just as important as finding the perfect dress. Having grown up in the wedding industry, Christie Lauren was inspired by her mother and started her own collection, designing headpieces, veils and jewelry. “Everyone knows Manhasset is high-end because of Americana. It’s wedding row over here,” says the Queens native, who has clientele from across the tristate area. “When this store became available, I opened it and redid the entire store. I’ve been here for five years and in the shopping center for twelve years.” Lauren’s store features exquisite headpieces, veils, jewelry and flower girl dresses. Her collection is comprised entirely of original pieces, and brides can choose whatever they like from the season. Since everything is handmade, the designer can customize everything to fit the consumer’s needs. “Soft metal headpieces are my most popular because they are flexible as to how the bride is

the sereneness of being out of the city is very important for our brides. It’s more peaceful.” Many of Aucone’s clients are city brides who come to the Manhasset salon because of its proximity to the city. The salon moved from Munsey Park to its current location on Northern Boulevard, and will be celebrating 20 years of bridal bliss in November. “The current trend is the Israeli designers because their dresses are very sexy and formfitting with lace and some beading,” says Aucone, adding that haute couture designer Inbal Dror is a favorite of many. “Vera Wang, Marchesa and Monique Lhuillier are the top three American designers that brides ask for.”
With more than 15 lines of dresses, Aucone encourages brides to be open-minded when venturing out to find their dream gown. “There’s always newness and when brides come in with an idea in their head, they lose the opportunity to see what’s out there,” she says. “Make it a happy experience, look at everything, learn your silhouettes. Blooming Business Olive Duntley has been helping residents blossom for more than 50 years By Betsy Abraham

here’s nothing like a beautiful bouquet of flowers to brighten up your day. Whether it’s long-stemmed roses to bring your special someone, an elegant bouquet for a bride or a bright arrangement to cheer up a friend, flowers have a way of lifting people’s spirits. For more than five decades, Manhasset residents have been finding arrangements for all of life’s big and small occasions at Olive Duntley, a full-service florist and floral designer. The Plandome Road florist has been a staple in Manhasset since the 1950s, serving as a plant store prior to being purchased by school teacher and namesake Olive Duntley. Current owner Lillian Lindergran has owned the shop for the past 49 years and says she’s seen many changes in the community during that time. “When I first bought the store, ladies would ride their bicycles with their baskets to buy flowers. They were loyal to the Miracle Mile,” Lindergran says. “Manhasset developed into a very high-end town due to the schools and convenient railroad.” Now, Olive Duntley serves customers from Manhasset and beyond, expanding its reach even further with its online

shop. As a full-service florist, Olive Duntley offers bouquets, arrangements and gifts for all of life’s meaningful moments. Whether you need an arrangement for a funeral or bouquet for your wedding, Olive Duntley has set itself apart by accommodating any and every need. “The old adage is that we deal with everything from the womb to the tomb,” Lindergran says. “Families stick with us for a lifetime. We give full value, and the quality of our flowers is superb.” The fresh flowers come from all over the world and are carefully arranged by Lindergran and her staff. Olive Duntley stays busy year-round, with upticks around the holidays. Lindergran notes that Mother’s Day is the busiest holiday of the year and that the shop always has to plan ahead for Valentine’s Day to prepare for last-minute orders. During Christmastime, the shop also offers interior and exterior home and commercial decorating. The staff’s passion and expertise shines through each handcrafted bouquet that Olive Duntley creates. Ellen Lopez, a florist at the shop, says they’re selling more than just flowers— they’re selling sentiments. “Our passion for flowers comes from our customers,” Lopez says. “When they come and buy flowers, we see the way their eyes light up and the appreciation for the quality

he warmth and passion of turn-of-the-century Paris enveloped attendees as they arrived at Moulin Rouge, the Tower Foundation of Manhasset’s 25th anniversary fundraising dinner dance, on Saturday, March 19, at the Plandome Country Club. With the main dining room bathed in elegant red lighting, festive decorations embellishing the walls and tables, fantastic raffles and prizes adorning the auction areas and Parisian-style dancers entertaining more than 400 guests, the venue was perfect for a celebration of the charity’s milestone fete. The purpose of this spectacular evening was to raise money for Tower’s 2016 initiative: the introduction of Google Chromebooks to all sixth-grade classes in the Manhasset School District. Galvanized by the success of last year’s initiative, which provided these computers to English students in grades 7 through 12, the Tower Foundation focused its attention on providing the same tremendous opportunity to the lower grade. By purchasing a class set of these innovative devices for each sixth-grade classroom, these elementary-school students will now have the chance to further expand their usage of the Discovery Education program in conjunction with the schools’ existing curriculum. Founded in 1991 as a nonprofit organization focused solely on enhancing the educational experience of Manhasset’s students, the

Thanks to the community’s benevolence, the Tower Foundation has been allowed to thrive for a quarter of a century and continue its dedication to our students.
Tower Foundation has a long history of allocations and gift giving that have helped make the school district exceptional. Starting in 1995 with Tower’s funding of state-of-the-art publishing systems for our schools, the tradition of giving has continued with the foundation also raising money for worthwhile endeavors such as creating The Teacher Grant Program for Summer Study (2001, 2002); providing Summer Center scholarships for at-risk students (2005); purchasing SmartBoards (2008, 2009); introducing districtwide Wi-Fi (2011); enhancing the high school library (2012, 2013); and digitizing the secondary-school English classrooms (2015). All of this could not have been accomplished without the generosity and commitment of the district’s parents, Manhasset School Board members and school administrators. Thanks to the community’s benevolence, Tower has been able to thrive for a quarter century and continue its dedication to our students. Tower is grateful for the Manhasset community’s support throughout the years.
The Tower Foundation’s board of directors (above) and generous guests raise the funding necessary to provide enriching extras at school.

After receiving a master’s in education from Western Governors University, he was a special education department teacher’s assistant at Manhasset’s secondary school for six-and-a-half years, where he was also coordinator of the middle school’s Bridge Program, an after-school program based on Adventures’ educational model. Guests admired the magnificent decor provided by Debbie and Steve Boehl of Westhampton’s Honeysuckle & Roses as they enjoyed wine and delectable food pairings while serenaded by the Meade Brothers. “On behalf of everyone at Adventures, I thank everybody for their generosity,” noted Diana Holden, Adventures in Learning executive director. “The guests who attend the wine tasting are all such wonderful people, and they never want to miss this event because it is so different and special.”
Cycling for a Cure De Rosa Foundation bikes to beat colon cancer By Elizabeth Johnson

uring Colon Cancer Awareness month in March, the De Rosa Foundation for Colon Cancer Research and Prevention was busy raising awareness and funds. In loving memory of Paul De Rosa, Rudy Krizan, James Capuano and Patricia E. Newman, the foundation hosted the Second Annual Charity Ride Fundraiser at SoulCycle in Woodbury and Manhattan Beach, California, to enlighten the sold-out crowd about the symptoms of colon cancer, the second leading cause of death in the U.S. Manhasset resident Kathy De Rosa started the foundation in 2007 to promote awareness for early detection and treatment. The previous year, De Rosa’s 35-year-old brother, Gary Constantopes, also from Manhasset, was diagnosed with hyperplastic polyosis syndrome, which causes hundreds of polyps that can become cancerous. Subsequently, the entire family was screened and Kathy was diagnosed. “Gary and I had no symptoms of this condition and we both felt well,” says De Rosa. After her surgery, she set up the charity. During the ride, residents were encouraged to get a colonoscopy beginning at age 50, and every five years thereafter. For more information, visit www.thederosafoundation.org.

T
he Golden Age of professional football was the 1960s. As television took off, so did this sport made for that medium. Certain names defined the era: Vince Lombardi in coaching, Dick Butkus on defense and Johnny Unitas as quarterback. When it came to running backs, one man dominated: Manhasset’s own Jim Brown. Brown’s professional career lasted from 1957 to 1965. Since then, some of his stats have been surpassed but not his fame. In 2002, The Sporting News named him the greatest football player of all time. In 2010, the National Football League’s NFL Films listed him as the second greatest player, behind Jerry Rice. Brown’s standing in football history remains secure. A native of St. Simons, Georgia, Brown moved to Manhasset with his family in 1944, at age 8. At Manhasset High School, Brown never took a break from sports. He starred in football, lacrosse, baseball, basketball and track, eventually earning no less than 11 letters. Brown was also a legend in the sandlot circuit, playing against youngsters from Manhasset, Roslyn, East Williston, Port Washington and other neighboring towns. After high school, it was off to Syracuse University, where he was a unanimous All-American in his senior year, while placing fifth in the Heisman trophy race. In 1957, Brown had the good fortune to be drafted in the first round by, coincidentally, the Cleveland Browns, where he would spend the rest of his playing days in football-crazed northeastern Ohio. What followed was the greatest run that any NFL running back has ever enjoyed. In his nine-year career, Brown led the league in rushing eight times. He ran for more than 1,000 yards in seven of his nine seasons. Brown averaged 5.2 yards per carry, a record that stands to this day. While not as famous as, say, Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak in 1941, it seems just as unassailable. The Browns built their offense around Number 32, who combined speed and power on the field in a way not seen since the heyday of Bronko Nagurski. When Paul Brown, Cleveland’s head coach, was asked why he used his top running back so often, the legendary coach responded, “When you’ve

got the biggest cannon, shoot it.” Which is what the Browns—certainly the only professional sports team to be named for their head coach—did. Jim Brown was a winner. In 1964, along with Frank Ryan, Gary Collins and Leroy Kelly, Brown led the Browns to the NFL championship, defeating the Baltimore Colts in a surprising 38-0 shutout. That was the last time a professional team from Cleveland has ever won a national championship. Brown, like Butkus and Unitas, was an iconic figure not just for his stats, but for his style of play. Opposing teams knew that Brown was going to have his number called a good 25 to 30 times a day. And so, they could key their defense on him. Brown also returned kickoffs and received passes from the backfield. Every Sunday was a workout in the pits. Brown knew the opposing team defense would zero in on him. And so, his philosophy was simple: “Make sure when anyone tackles you, he remembers how much it hurts,” he once told a teammate. Brown, too, took his time when

getting up from a play. He did so very slowly before returning to the huddle. As incredible as his accomplishments on the field were, so was his stamina. He carried the ball 2,359 times and never missed a down on account of an injury. Also in 1964, Brown made his first attempt at acting, appearing in the Western Rio Conchos. And as it turned out, acting was where Brown’s future would take him. In 1966, Brown stunned the sports world by announcing his retirement. He was only 29 years old, still at the top of his game. Indeed, in the 1965 Pro Bowl game, Brown’s final appearance on a football field, he scored three touchdowns. Still, acting beckoned as the physical toll from years of punishment on the football field might have been catching up to him. Brown made his announcement while on the set of The Dirty Dozen, a World War II film that starred Lee Marvin, something that also may have factored into his decision. Brown spent the next 50 years in various roles in both the movies and on television, starring with Fred Williamson in several action films and as a defensive coach in Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday. Clearly, Brown preferred sunny Hollywood to Cleveland’s frozen tundra. Still, he kept a connection to the Browns, often giving support from the sidelines and later serving as a special advisor to the team, a role that he still holds. Brown has been elected to both the Pro Football and College Football Halls of Fame. But, something else was happening. The gridiron great slowly began making his way back home. In 2012, Brown became part owner of the New York Lizards, a Major League Lacrosse team. The next year, he returned to Manhasset for a celebration of his career. On April 29, 2013, Brown was inducted into the Manhasset High School Sports Hall of Fame, while being honored with a Hometown Hall of Famer plaque and the unveiling of the Jim Brown Athletic Field. He was feted by both the Manhasset High School Boys Chorus and the Marching Band. The day also featured the retirement of the number 33 that Brown wore at Manhasset High School. Manhasset’s most famous son had come home.
