I have made it my business to become well versed in the neighborhoods that line the corridor from Manhattan to Montauk, but at heart, I am a North Shore Girl. I strive to go the extra mile to make sure those with whom I am working know everything they need to know about the area, as well as the little extras that make living here so special. People often tell me that I have encyclopedic knowledge of the area’s best resources. I love when I am called on to recommend a dog groomer, find a feng shui expert, locate the perfect antique English breakfront, or share which florist will deliver the freshest peonies. It is beyond satisfying to me that this special relationship I have with my clients and customers does not end at the closing table, but frequently evolves to enduring friendship.

he Hamlet of Manhasset may only stretch for 2.4 square miles, but I constantly find myself pleased and impressed with how many rich stories manage to emerge from within that compact area. So it goes with our latest edition of Manhasset Magazine. For starters, our cover story by managing editor Jennifer Fauci focuses on The Church of Saint Mary and the many years of service that it has provided for the local community as a parochial school, a center of worship and its breathtaking set of stained glass windows that give this mission-style building quite a striking position situated where it is at the tip of Plandome Road. Speaking of this well-traveled byway, Christina Claus takes a look at Plandome Road’s history and not only highlights some of the more beloved stores like the Manhasset Deli, A&F Market and Villa Milano Pizzeria that line this thoroughfare, but Christina also traces Plandome Road’s transformation to become the hub of Manhasset thanks to the placement of the Long Island Rail Road a century-plus ago. Speaking of food, we touch on matters of the stomach with pieces like Nicole Lockwood’s profile of Buttercooky Bakery and Alexandra Civorelli’s roundup of local eateries that include Publicans, Cipollini, and Greens Irish Pub. Something Manhasset has is plenty of heart, and to that end, we highlight a number of local charitable organizations. Elizabeth Johnson trains the spotlight on the Tower Foundation and the DeRosa Foundation, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Jennifer also does her part for our furry friends via a feature she wrote on the Rescue Paw Foundation. Given its upscale nature, Manhasset also has plenty going on fashion-wise be it via jewelry (Jennifer highlights Tiffany & Co. celebrating 180 years as an original store), art and design (Nicole does a great job finding out more about Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams) or fashion (Kimberly Dijkstra goes neck-deep in designers with her feature about exclusive retailer Hirshleifers). At the end of the day, people are what make a community. Joe Catrone reflects that when he chats with acting coach Ann Gray Graf of Actor’s Garage. The same can be said for Christina, who focuses on a pair of coaches of the year, Danielle Gallagher (women’s lacrosse) and Charles Collyer (golf). One of my favorite sections is My Manhasset, where Christina speaks with residents about what they find most endearing about the community they live in. This edition of Manhasset Magazine presents the kind of well-crafted perspective that I’m sure you’ll enjoy whether you live in Manhasset or not. Angela Susan Anton Publisher

or centuries, houses of worship have been designated as sanctuaries for those who feel lost, are in need of comfort or simply for those who come to pray. The Church of Saint Mary has provided many virtues for its parishioners for more than 150 years, and its commanding presence in the community has become so much more than a staple, but a second home. Like any significant moment in history, there are several important dates of conception for the Church of Saint Mary due to the transition of the church. Although the church is technically 164 years old as the 1853 logo states, it was first St. Michael’s in Flushing prior to being St. Mary’s officially in Manhasset. Originally a mission church, the structure was moved from Flushing to Plandome Road where it was dedicated on October 4, 1857, and served the people of St. Mary’s until Aug. 15, 1917, when the present church opened at 1300 Northern Boulevard. Eileen Symmons serves as the director of communications for the Church of Saint Mary and the Schools of Saint Mary and believes that the church and campus are truly the focal points of the Manhasset community. “We are a community of faith with a history of strong leadership,” says Symmons, adding that the parish serves beyond the walls of the church. “What we hear inside the church we act out in society. People donate their time, their talents and treasures to the church at St. Mary’s.” On the campus side there is a combined 159 years of excellence in Catholic education. The elementary school was established in 1926 and the high school was established in 1949. To date, Symmons says that there are more than 15,000 alumnae of St. Mary’s. “We reference the schools together as the schools of St. Mary, but they are two separate divisions that flourish in an environment of academic excellence, inspired faith and creative learning,” she says. “Students are prepared to achieve their greatest academic potential as they grow in mind and spirit. We integrate Catholic values into our daily curriculum and promote an atmosphere of respect, tolerance and generosity.” With almost 3,200 families in the parish, making for a total of 11,300 plus parishioners, it is safe to say that a big chunk of the town is a part of St. Mary’s. With three full-time priests on staff and a weekend assistant, it is a large undertaking to manage day to day operations. But Rev. Fr. Robert A. Romeo, will always offer words of

A Tavern To Call

Home U

By Alexandra Civorelli

nlike most buildings, which take on new meaning as their space transforms into shops or eateries that come and go as the years go by, there is one business address in Manhasset that is synonymous with its most beloved tavern. Although its name, food and owners have changed several times in the past, 550 Plandome Road has always been the go-to watering hole for the community, forever immortalized in both J.R. Moehringer’s memoir, The Tender Bar, (“There’s one main road… at the top is the most popular church… at the bottom is the most sacred bar”), as well as the stomachs and souls of generations of Manhasset residents. And now, this meaningful building is once again home to Publicans, a new restaurant with an old name at an even older address, which means this newly opened

restaurant has a lot to live up to. The significance of the return of Publicans is not lost on general manager Mike King, who is new to Long Island, but quickly learned how important it was to get everything “right,” which is why, although Publicans was set to open in the fall of 2016, opened its doors instead on January 31, 2017. “This [restaurant] was unique in the metamorphosis that took place,” says King. “We just got so into design and construction...and it was worth it to do it the right way.” Getting it “right” meant the design of the bar to the food on its menu, and everything in between, in order to accurately capture the well-remembered atmosphere of the old Publicans while still making the tavern feel fresh. “The whole literary connection is another level; I’ve never worked in a place that has meant so much to people, that was in a memoir,” says King. “This was a resurrection of an establishment of something that’s already existed, and there are a lot of expectations and pressures...we have a built-in audience. The name alone takes on a lot of weight.” The response since opening more than two months ago has, King says, “been amazing, at times overwhelming, sometimes exactly like what we were expecting and sometimes beyond.” People across Long Island clamoring to experience the new Publicans has created the need to make reservations so as to accommodate patrons and try to eradicate wait times. There have also been many private event inquiries already, and the tavern has hosted about a dozen parties thanks to the back room. “We want to be part of the community,

and it’s overwhelming and humbling that people want to eat your food and tell their stories,” says King. Still, a well-loved name and its built-in audience notwithstanding, the food at Publicans will likely be the biggest draw for people to keep coming back once the novelty of the restaurant has worn off. The menu is small, but King assured that it will be expanded by Chef Rich, who has been cooking since the mid-’80s in California and whose food is a beautiful marriage of east meets west. He also explained that the many dishes will be seasonal, and specials on the menu are possible future dishes that may pop up in a coming season. As of right now, the dinner menu has

starters, salads, entrées, burgers, steaks and desserts, as well as sides, a kids’ menu and a beverage list with cocktails, including a nice after-dinner drink like the Pink Squirrel, wine and lots of beer options. As with any good pub worth its salt, Publicans offers various burgers, including the Old Bay burger with a Pat LaFrieda beef burger topped with a spicy crabcake, lettuce, tomato and Old Bay aioli. Vegetarians can feast on The Pretender, which is a homemade veggie patty filled with quinoa, beets, carrots, onions, celery, lentils, almonds, panko and garlic aioli. “We are trying to do things simple; we’re not a gastropub, we’re an American tavern and we make simple

things well that taste amazing,” he says. As it’s still a brand-new restaurant, there is more to come for Publicans including a recently added lunch menu. They are currently perfecting a brunch menu and expanding after-dinner drinks and cold-brew coffees. Publicans is designed to appeal to all as both a blast from the past and a modern tavern that is the go-to place for the Manhasset community to have a bite, hang out and drink with friends and family. For more on Publicans, visit their website at www.publicansmanhasset. com and their Facebook page at www. facebook.com/PublicansManhasset, or to make a reservation, call 516-627-7722.

Every town needs a good pub to regularly meet friends for drinks, grab a casual bite to eat and have a good time, and Greens Irish Pub is that place for Manhasset residents. ccording to the slogan of Long Island’s notorious Buttercooky Bakery, with locations in Floral Park and Manhasset, “baked with butter makes it better,” but the famed pastry shop is proving that it has the culinary prowess to go far beyond just baked goods. Since the recent opening of an adjacent cafe at the Plandome Road storefront on February 17, Buttercooky has been delighting locals with an array of additional menu items including, but not limited to, sandwiches, panini, soups, salads, crepes, waffles, breakfast bars, yogurt parfaits and açai bowls. These additions have been enticing people from near and far, making the corner bakery a must-see breakfast and lunch destination. “I’m so thankful for all my customers,” says Benny Borgognone, owner of Buttercooky Bakery and a longtime pastry chef. “They must pass a million bakeries before they come to me. It was a lot of work and preparation that went into opening the café, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and the customers. Without their approval, none of this means anything.” For breakfast, the most popular items among such customers tends to be customizable breakfast

sandwiches, consisting of eggs or egg whites and cheese with a selection of either bacon or sausage, served on a croissant, brioche bun or bagel. For a sweeter option, customers gravitate toward the Belgium waffles, accompanied by toppings such as fresh fruit, whipped cream, melted chocolate fudge, Nutella and maple syrup, as well as the fresh crepes, a popular one being a chocolate stuffed crepe topped with fresh strawberries and a dollop of heavy cream. Health-conscious eaters are not neglected with the inclusion of lighter breakfast choices such as the “Manhasset Rise ‘N’ Shine,” a classic bowl of oatmeal made with steamed milk and topped with seasonal fruits and maple syrup. Popular amongst younger generations are the açai bowls, made with a simple açai fruit puree, banana, coconut milk and a scattering of granola and assorted berries. Homemade oatmeal breakfast bars and yogurt parfaits are both tasty and efficient for those on the go or about to begin for their morning commute. All breakfast items are well complimented by a cup of morning joe. The coffee, available either hot or iced, is made from a special house blend roasted in New Jersey. A far cry from Buttercooky’s usual cookies, cakes and pastries, the new soups, salads, sandwiches and panini highlight the diversity and capacity of the staff. The soups vary daily, interchanging between tomato, split pea, chicken noodle and more. Of the panini, the most commonly ordered thus far has been the Italiano, with breaded chicken cutlets, fresh slices of mozzarella cheese, a thin layer of prosciutto and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Another highly demanded item is the house salad, a bed of arugula topped with cranberries, caramelized walnuts, goat cheese, cherry tomatoes and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. In an effort to satisfy all customers regardless of certain dietary restrictions or food allergies they may have, the cafe presents gluten-free, sugar-free, eggless

The years of Buttercooky Bakery’s success over the past few decades is no surprise when one takes into consideration the extensive experience that Borgognone has had in the business. The seasoned pastry chef comes from a long line of bakers, originating from Sicily, Italy. Borgognone began in the field working alongside his father and uncle in bakeries in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Even as he grew older and began pursuing a degree in hotel and restaurant management, he continued learning the tricks and trades of the baked goods business, until one day he began thinking about the possibility of going solo and starting his own business. “I had been working for my uncle when I said to myself ‘What am I doing working for other people? I must know a little about this business,” says Borgognone. “I came across a place that was available in Floral Park, so I went to look at it. It didn’t have the same volume of people passing on the sidewalks like in Brooklyn or the city, but the kitchen was big, and I bought it.” Due to high demand, a second Buttercooky Bakery was opened in Manhasset in 2005. The two locations have since been attracting patrons from across Nassau and Suffolk counties, and even as far as Queens. Though there are no current plans underway in terms of expanding into other towns, Borgognone has expressed his interest in possibly doing so in Suffolk County or Manhattan in the future. The Manhasset-based Buttercooky Bakery is located at 140 Plandome Road. For more information, visit www.buttercookybakery.com.

h, the little blue box. For the past 180 years, Tiffany & Co. has charmed the jewelry world with its exquisite diamonds, high end jewelry and classic gift ware. The company’s signature Tiffany blue is iconic and the brand has solidified itself as a Hollywood favorite, being personified by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s. All of this will continue to be enveloped in a white satin ribbon as an elegant mainstay for the jewelry line’s foreseeable future. Founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in Brooklyn, Connecticut, Tiffany & Co. opened its doors to the world in 1837 as a stationary emporium. Closer to home, the store’s Manhasset location has been around since 1988 at the Americana Manhasset Luxury Shopping Center. Itay Shimony is the vice president of Charles Lewis Tiffany the Northeast market and said since the Long Island opening, the brand has found a home on Northern Boulevard.

“This was our first location on Long Island, and it has exceeded all expectations,” says Shimony of the store, which has undergone two major renovations since its opening, including a complete remodel in 2011. “Tiffany & Co. is a proud community partner in Manhasset as the store is staffed locally, and the team members are well-connected with their clients and charities.” Like many businesses in Manhasset, Tiffany & Co. proudly supports local foundations, including Champions for Charity, the Manhasset School Community Association

and the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center. Although the company is expansive, Shimony said that many clients in town refer to Tiffany & Co. as their “local jeweler.” “The heritage of Tiffany & Co. is vividly illuminated by the magnificent diamonds that initially brought the company international renown and that continue to highlight Tiffany’s legacy as one of the world’s premier jewelers,” said Shimony of the iconic jeweler. “I believe the breathtaking sparkle of a Tiffany diamond has an incontestable edge

The Tiffany HardWear collection is not your mother’s Tiffany. New to the brand, the collection builds on the industrial vibe of New York City. Featuring rings, earrings, necklaces and pendants, Tiffany HardWear “express the strength and spirit of the modern rebel.” At the turn of the 20th century, Tiffany & Co. became known for its glamorous, geometric Art Deco pieces and bold cocktail-style creations inspired by designers Elsa Peretti and Jean Schlumberger. Shimony noted that while the exquisite jewels adorn the likes of celebrities and dignitaries, but both men and women who respect the history and timeless elegance shop the brand as well. The feeling of receiving the little blue box is magical as it epitomizes everything Tiffany & Co. represents: grace, beauty, and a nod to the past with the creativity of the future. enture down the quiet path of Lumber Road, away from the bustle of Northern Boulevard, and one will find the Actor’s Garage tucked away in a small second floor studio. First-time visitors could conceivably have difficulty finding the place, but founder and acting instructor Ann Gray Graf has something of an affinity for remote locales; she previously held classes in the garage of her Manhasset home, hence her business’s name. “It was great,” recalls Graf. “The kids felt like it was their own secret garden. Somehow, being in my garage relaxed them and let them really put themselves out there.” Graf’s business eventually grew to the point where her garage would no longer suffice, prompting her to rent her current space above the Abrakadoodle art studio. Regardless of where Graf teaches, her main priority is to cultivate a freeing and creatively-stimulating environment for students, most of whom are between ages 4 and 18. “I really believe the pressure put on kids today at such a young age is harmful,” says Graf. “What I’ve found is a successful technique for producing some of today’s top kid talent for TV, film, voiceovers and commercials.” Inspired by her own experiences as an actress and comedian, Graf decided to create a set of classes devoted solely to acting and not musical theater, since Graf, unable to sing, had struggled landing musical roles when she was starting out. She also tailored her classes to offer showcases with a talent agent or manager, something that Graf says wasn’t being offered when she first started. As a result, several students of the Actor’s Garage have experienced breaks in film and television, such as Ben Hyland of the 2008 film Marley & Me, Cree Cicchino of the Nickelodeon sitcom Game Shakers and Sky Katz of the upcoming That’s So Raven spinoff, Raven’s Home. “Basically, [I took] the things that I missed as a kid and what made me successful as an adult,” says Graf, explaining the setup of her class. “And I just put them into one.” Perhaps this explains why the atmosphere of Graf’s class seems to be a balance of discipline and fun. Graf doesn’t allow cellphones—a collection bin is passed around at the beginning of class. Nonetheless, there is

an abundance of laughter and joking around between exercises, with moods appearing to improve almost instantaneously upon each student’s arrival, as one parent pointed out while dropping off her son. “This place is the one thing that made him passionate about something,” says Kalli Roditis of her son Yianni. “When it’s about acting or Actor’s Garage or Ann, he will be on time and focused. It’s a totally a safe place for him.” “My goal is to have every kid find out who they are and embrace it,” she says. “I have a little system I set up from what I learned. It’s a simple technique: know everything about your character and then find out what that character has that you have as well. Connect there, and then be [yourself] as the character. Acting is being truthful in an untruthful situation.” Graf should know; she’s no slouch herself when it comes to performing. She got her start as a stand up comedian, sharpening her craft in several New York City comedy clubs alongside Dave Chappelle, Adam Sandler and Susie Essman, of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame. Graf followed that by landing guest roles on Law and Order, The Sopranos and several commercials. But what gives the Actor’s Garage the edge over similar studios? “The answer is me,” she says, before elaborating further. “The one thing I have that not many other studios have is, I’ve been on both sides of the camera. So what they get from me is years of experience from somebody who did acting, comedy and voiceovers.” “Ann is always so supportive,” added one of her students, Timothy, who has studied at the Actor’s Garage for two years. “Whenever I go to an audition she’ll call me and wish me luck. It’s been really fun.” The fickle nature of the acting business often necessitates that aspiring performers take on a job as little more than a means to an end. Graf sees her own peace of mind with her accomplishments as one her greatest strengths as a teacher. “I’m totally dedicated to this school,” she says. “Some other places, [the teacher] opens it while they’re trying to get their big break. I’ve had my big break. I’m onto the next level.” Ann Gray Graf (left) prides herself on using positive reinforcement to help her students gain confidence both in acting and in life.

Plandome Road in the 1950s.

P

landome” comes from the Latin words meaning “plain home,” which does not describe the eclectic shops on Plandome Road ranging from Steiner’s Bakery to Joseph’s Haircutter and Barber. Plandome Road was not always the main street it is today, but the placement of the Long Island Rail Road solidified its spot as the town’s hub. In the early 1800s, Plandome Road was just a country lane while North Hempstead Turnpike, now Northern Boulevard, was a toll road. The original town’s main street was located in the valley at the head of the bay on Valley Road. The old Plandome Road saw the comings and goings of many prominent Manhasset buildings including Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, which was dedicated in 1857 on Plandome Road. However, the church moved to 1300 Northern Boulevard, where it still stands today. In 1868 the five room Plandome Road schoolhouse

was built only to be torn down in 1914 to be replaced by a larger brick school in 1915 that was also later torn down. The brick school was replaced with the Manhasset Village Green, later to be named Mary Jane Davies Green in 1989. The original Long Island Railroad was built in 1899 as a wooden frame building, relocating the business district of Manhasset from the “Valley” near the bay to the “Hill.” The original building was later renovated in the 1920s to the building that stands today. Soon after the creation of the railroad, the Town of North Hempstead Town Hall was built on Plandome Road in 1907, the same year Manhasset became a permanent seat

in the North Hempstead town government. Plandome Road was chosen as the site for the Town of North Hempstead Hall due to its central location in North Hempstead and its proximity to the railroad station. With the addition of the town hall and the Long Island Railroad, business flocked to Plandome, no longer making it a country lane. “Growth around Plandome Road was directly affected by the placement of the Long Island Railroad,” says Town of North Hempstead historian Howard Kroplick. “The businesses moved with the train station.” A Plandome Road staple, Wright hardware opened in 1922 when Plandome Road had no sidewalks and was narrow. As the town began to flourish, sidewalks were added and Plandome Road was widened in 1927. Young’s Fine Wine and Spirits was established in 1933 at 505 Plandome Road, which is still around today. Manhasset’s first library opened in a rented storefront on Plandome Road with the question of whether it should be private or public, later moving to Onderdonk Avenue in 1952 where it stands today as a public library. Today, Plandome Road is still lined with businesses and bustling with people shopping, working or eating. Mary Jane Davies Green breaks up the busy town with its greenery, blue and white gazebo and children’s playground with water spray features. In the summer, bands play in the park, inviting residents to get together to listen to music. Many small family businesses still thrive on Plandome Road, including town staples like the Manhasset Deli, which has switched owners a few times since it was built in the 1940s, but remains a prime spot to eat in town. The A&F Market originally built in 1957 and bought over in 2008 by a new family still supplies Manhasset with a local butcher and grocery at 393 Plandome Road. Joseph’s Haircutter and Barber, Villa Milano Pizzeria and Louie’s Diner have also been serving the Manhasset community for many years and still remain important parts of making Plandome Road what it is today. “The road varies in style,” says local architect Frank Capone, who owns Frank J. Capone, Architects at 272 Plandome Road. “But that’s a good thing because it’s not

Congregational Nursery School Celebrates 59 Years Operating as a Community Preschool.

Congregational Nursery School, located at 1845 Northern Blvd. in Manhasset, (right across from the Apple Store), has a few more openings for September 2017 in our 2’s separation classes, Pre-K classes and early 5’s class. Our Pre-K and early 5’s classes include yoga and Fun Day Monday! Afternoon enrichment classes available as well! Congregational Nursery School is celebrating their 59th year operating as a community preschool. If you ask one of our graduates about their preschool experience they will tell you that they “played a lot” and missed their playtime when they went off to kindergarten. Our philosophy is “learning through play,” which has withstood the test of time. This natural approach to learning through play is the cornerstone of Congregational Nursery School. Our program is designed to guide the developing child toward the important concepts of sharing, respect and recognition of each other’s feelings while participating in a group environment. Our activities promote creative thinking, self-respect, responsibility and good citizenship. While we embrace the new technology that has made our

lives so much easier, we feel our students need to be immersed in socialization skills, not their iPads. We are focused on pre-reading, pre-writing and language activities that all lead to kindergarten readiness. We have seen learning theories come and go with the most recent “new” standard being the Pre-K Common Core Standard. The approach to learning (Domain 1) is “engaging students in play as a means of exploration and learning.” So the “new standard” is what we have been doing for over 50 years! Our program times are as follows: • The 2’s separation program is Tues/Thurs or Wed/Fri from 9 to 11 adding Monday as an optional morning. • The 3’s program is four days per week (Tuesday through Friday) from 9:00-12:00. • The 4’s and early 5’s program are five days per week (Monday through Friday) from 9am-12pm. • Our enrichment program for all Pre-K students is 1pm to 3pm. Children need time to laugh, explore, experiment and create as they begin their educational journey. We would love to be part of that journey!

trying to be South Hampton where everything is the same. There is freedom of design.” Capone has worked up and down Plandome Road, modernizing Young’s Fine Wine and Spirits in 1998 and his own storefront in that same year. Capone worked on the Plandome Village Hall restoration and built the modern clock tower that stands above Plandome Road. “There are definitely upscale businesses coming in,” says Capone. “Many of the buildings on the road have been updated, probably about 30 percent. There’s a turnover in more upscale buildings. We miss Wright Hardware which was a wonderful hardware store. There’s less retail and family owned buildings than Young’s Fine Wine and Spirits prior to Capone’s renovation. there used to be like dry cleaners or (Photo courtesy of Frank Capone) shoemakers.” While many family-owned businesses remain, the road is seeing an influx in corporate banks and real estate agencies with three of each type of business lining the road. “One great thing about the road is the Memorial Day Parade that comes down it,” says Capone. “It’s a wonderful event that the fire department puts on with the Girl Scouts and the veterans. In the spring and summer we have music at Mary Jane Davies and vendors will set up tents to sell.” With the placement of the railroad, Plandome Road was able to become the town hub that it is today lined with many long-running family-owned businesses and Mary Jane Davies Park that allows the town of Manhasset to get together in the warmer weather.

From Winter Blues To

Spring Hues Trends to look out for in interior design By Nicole Lockwood

T

he winter blues have come to an end, literally. As we enter the warmer spring and summer months, trends in interior design are evolving simultaneously. In terms of color, stores are moving away from dark blue hues toward more vibrant colors, particularly those within the green and purple families. Such colors are well complimented pieces made up of raw and natural looking materials like wood, marble and other stones. These sought-after trends are accessible and on the rise, particularly within the Manhasset area. With stores such as Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Design

Within Reach, Pier 1 Imports and Crate and Barrel, you can make your home look like it’s jumped off the pages of a high-end interior design catalogue. Last year, homeowners tended to stick to light and neutral tones, with the only accent color being dark blue. While neutral wall colors still tend to dominate rooms, experts are noticing a rise in the use of vibrant colors. Green has been shaking up both the interior design world as well as the high fashion scene, making its way into home goods catalogs and the runways. Names Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year, green is said to represent freshness and revitalization, something any home could use as summer approaches. Expect to see shades ranging

anywhere from mint, to olive to emerald, which can be incorporated to larger pieces of furniture (such as chair) or in small accent pieces (like dishes and glasses). Dispersing plants throughout the home is an easy way to make a room seem more dynamic and full of life while incorporating the trendy color. On the opposite end of the color spectrum, purple has also been making frequent appearances in home decorating. From lavender amethyst, hues of purple create a soothing effect in the home. Benjamin Moore has recently named shadow (specifically shadow 2117-30) as its color of the year. This muted type of purple, described by Benjamin Moore as being “allusive and enigmatic, appears to have dark gray undertones,

and is frequently paired with shades of pale green as well as off-white and nude hues. While 2016 was the year of sleek, polished metallics, 2017 marks a shift toward raw materials such as reclaimed wood and rough stones, particularly marble. Even seeing a combination of the two. The rise of wood and marble is a stark departure from the presence of silver, gold, brass and copper in prior months. These materials give the home a more rustic, earthy feel, and blend seamlessly with vibrant colors, such as those mentioned above. Reclaimed wood is being used as statement furniture pieces, as well as for smaller

accent pieces such as bowls, sculptures and wall art. Crate and Barrel’s “Slice Teak Wall Art” is described as a perfect way to “add organic interest to living room, bedroom and dining spaces,” with each panel displaying its own unique grain. Both white and black marble are popular materials for table tops, primarily of coffee tables and end tables. The simplicity of the marbled pattern makes it suitable for pairing with colorful or more intricate decorations. Stark white objects were a common trend in interior design last year, but the marbled effect is proving for more interesting and eye-catching pieces.

Colon cancer is a very real threat and affects so many people including those dear to us like our friend and neighbor Stacey Fuller Cohn who succumbed to the disease last year. The crowd of more than 350 people included esteemed guests and highly acclaimed physicians Dr. John A. Procaccino and Dr. Jose G. Guillem. The evening was a wonderful tribute for DeRosa and for the foundation.

ome people will say that there are few more precious things in life than the love of an animal. Others will say that diamonds are the most precious to behold. Combine them together and you have a passionate group of people determined to help rescue dogs and raise money for their care. The Rescue Paw Foundation was founded in 2011 by Tim Claire, founder and president of the nonprofit organization based in Glen Cove. The public corporation only consists of four directors and a part time bookkeeper, but according to Claire, it’s the behind the scenes work and building infrastructures that sets the foundation apart from others. “We play the role of making sure animals have an adequate facility, and essentially, giving people a source of funds to run a good organization,” says Claire, who maintains the office, tax records and works with people to prepare grant money. “We’re a low key group so we’re a little more anonymous.” Claire and the rest of the foundation is strongly committed to giving back 100 percent of the dollars raised for the cause. He says that everyone on the board is a volunteer, with the big picture being to build up rescue facilities for the animals. “We don’t see a lot of people in this field trying to build infrastructures and it’s more the commitment than anything else. We have to attack parts of the whole rescue model that’s not very well served,” says Claire. “We’re trying to be out in the field and give people the resources to start from the ground up by

identifying the needs in the chain of rescuing animals and getting them out to a family.” Rescue Paw Foundation is investing long term to treat animals until they can be certified ready to go to a loving home. A major benefactor in that quest has been Candy Udell, the president of London Jewelers. It was Claire’s hope that this new partnership would have

a bigger impact both locally and on a more national scale. “We’re looking at doing something close to home and we’re interested in funding for adequate facilities and money for spay and neuter. Candy is a benefactor and deals with the commercial; it’s different than what the foundation is doing,” says Claire, adding that there is an arms-length relationship between the two as Udell does not serve on the foundation’s board but does work with them. “When we started discussing Candy’s interest in doing more, we looked at various features, family corporations and foundations and we found that there’s a lot of cross purposes and a lot of emotion in animal welfare.” Udell has served as president of the

Manhasset location for the last 40 years, and her love of animals goes deeper than just contributing financially. She has literally put her own paw print on the cause by creating a sweet and meaningful line of affordable jewelry that anyone with a pet past or present should add to their collection. “I started making jewelry and Our Cause For Paws jewelry collection, is sold in all the London Jewelers stores. A portion of the proceeds from that collection is donated back to the Rescue Paw Foundation to do the work they do,” says Udell, adding that Rescue Paw helps to build shelters, fund transports and spay-neuter programs. “It’s my passion and I thought by making the jewelry, it could go back to rescue dogs in communities and shelters and all things related to helping animals.” To date, Udell has been able to rescue more than 2,500 dogs and cats and counting. The dogs come from all over the world and Udell’s store has played host to many local adoption events. And although she believes in local adoptions and working with local shelters first, she also works with other places as well. “I was able to help two shelters out east;

We also have a small tag pendant on a chain in silver, white, yellow and rose gold and with diamonds as well.” In addition to the jewelry line for Rescue Paw Foundation, London Jewelers has also designed pieces for other charities and organizations including pancreatic cancer, the JCC, the Katz Women’s Foundation, Tourette’s syndrome and a yellow rose collection for Alzheimer’s. With a perfect match partnership for the past six years, both Udell and Claire have enjoyed the benefits of their companies working together. London Jewelers runs several adoption events at the store including Champions for Charity, which invites a handful of rescues to bring dogs. Udell says that she tries to host events in the fall and spring at Wheatley Plaza and Americana Manhasset. She is hopeful that another event will happen early this summer. “To work with so many local shelter is a blessing. It’s something that I’m really proud of and above all, I love being able to help

Manhasset Coaches

C

oaches have been known to be guiding figures throughout an adolescent’s life, not only teaching teens how to play their sport, but giving them the invaluable skill of working with others to reach a goal. Manhasset High School boy’s golf coach Chuck Collyer and girl’s lacrosse coach Danielle Gallagher have proved to teach more than just their sport as they won 2015-16 New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) coach of the year awards. While Collyer won a NYSPHSAA award for coach of the year, Gallagher won a NYSPHSAA award for coach of the year along with Region One Coach of the Year as selected by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and NFHS national coach of the year. Collyer began his career in Manhasset in 1981, dedicating most of his time to the school district as a teacher at Shelter Rock Elementary School and the coach of four sports, including basketball and football for 40 years, baseball for 19 years and golf for 25 years at Manhasset High School. “It was the perfect setup,” says Collyer. “We’d get out a little before three and I’d drive over to the high school. I was able to watch the younger kids all the way up until they graduated.” Introduced to the sport by his brother, Collyer found a love for golf in college and began teaching himself to play. Collyer didn’t take golfing lessons until later in life. About the time the previous Manhasset golf coach was about to retire, Collyer was playing golf on the weekends, watching golf on television and reading books on golf. He then told the athletic director that there was only one sport he would give up coaching baseball for, golf. “I continued learning more about the game,” says Collyer. “I went to some coaching clinics and then I got into caddying at the Meadow Brook Club 16 years ago and then I learned more and more about the game, the swing. I retired from teaching seven years ago and began caddying full time. It’s amazing when you watch other people play what you pick up on. After that I met the head pro over at golf tech and took a couple lessons from him and watched while he gave lessons to other people.”

Of The Year

By Christina Claus

After being a coach for many years, Collyer recognizes that coaching a sport isn’t just about teaching teens how to play the game, but building their confidence and having the kids grow as a team. “The most rewarding part about being a coach is watching the players grow and learn from the first day of practice to the last day of that year,” says Collyer. “You can see the growth spurt in many of the players. Seeing them have success and the look they have on their face when they have success is very rewarding as a coach.” When asked about his greatest accomplishment as a coach, Collyer says that the wins are not something he takes into account because all that matters is that his players get better as the year goes on. “When you have the end of the year team dinner and when they come up and thank you, that’s very rewarding,” says Collyer. “In all of the sports, I’ve had excellent players. Watching the growth and confidence build is very rewarding and it makes you feel good inside. It’s not always the best players. Even some of the ones that are less athletically inclined, watching them have success is more than enough.” Despite Collyer’s impressive coaching resume over the years, he was still in shock when he found out that he was named a NYSPHSAA coach of the year. “I figured it had to be a longevity thing,” says Collyer. “I felt very honored that I had been nominated and ultimately won the award. It’s an honor but also a testament to the types of players I’ve had over the years. It says a lot about them.” Like Collyer, Gallagher was also surprised that she received NYSPHSAA lacrosse coach of the year, NFHS Region One Coach of the Year and NFHS national coach of the year. “It’s a great honor,” says Gallagher. “It comes in the year that you didn’t win states, so it shows the value of the award and just putting the work in year after year. It’s great to be recognized for that. I think it’s just nice to be recognized for all of this hard work. As a player I had a blast playing and as a coach it’s great to watch these girls grow into the women they are today.”

Above: Collyer with the golf team Inset: Gallagher talks to her team on the field.

Gallagher grew up in Manhasset, beginning her lacrosse career on the Manhasset boys PAL team because there had not been a girls youth league at the time. She went on to play on the state championship team in high school, later playing lacrosse for the College of William and Mary and then going on to play for the U.S. Elite Women’s Lacrosse team for 18 years. While holding an assistant coaching position at Notre Dame from 2000-2002, Gallagher was called back to New York to take care of her father. Soon after, Gallagher began coaching at her alma mater, Manhasset High School. “I think it’s pretty cool to coach where you played in high school,” says Gallagher. “You see people in town you went to high school with. You just want to maintain the traditions of what you experienced. Just watching the kids go on to play

at the collegiate level is pretty cool. I’m always checking to see how my kids are doing. If they didn’t continue to play, you see a lot of these kids be successful at the next level of their life.” Along with being the Manhasset High School girl’s lacrosse coach, Gallagher owns two lacrosse camps, Liberty Lacrosse, an elite travel lacrosse program, and Black Diamond Lacrosse, a summer camp that provides a competitive yet fun environment. Both camps provide young girls with the opportunity to work on their sport with different coaches from colleges across the country and gain insight into the recruitment process. “To help these kids get recruited and watch them is really neat,” says Gallagher. “To help them get into a better school that they may not have gotten into without lacrosse is great. Being a coach is not about just showing up for practice. It’s about doing what you can to help in other ways.” Both Gallagher and Collyer agree that being a coach is about helping kids by guiding them toward their goals athletically, academically and socially. The two award-winning coaches constantly keep in touch with their past players, watching them mature and grow, proving that they are more than just coaches on the field.

Robert McNamara, Mayor of the Village of Flower Hill I was born and raised in Manhasset. I think it’s Hometown, USA. You walk down Plandome Road and you wave to five to 10 people and maybe know half of them. It’s just a warm, friendly town. It’s just a real hometown place so close to NYC. You grow up here and your kids grow up here. You go to church and you just wave to everyone there. It’s just a charming place. Being the mayor of Flower Hill I see people wanting to come into Manhasset. It’s a great community with great restaurants, great schools, great lacrosse, parks and just people who care about it. Of all the places I’ve been and I’ve traveled all my life, this place is home.

Benny Borgognone, Owner of Buttercooky Bakery I like the close proximity of the residents how we unite always when there’s something like a tragedy. I like how we unite as a community. Everybody is always looking to help one another. All of my three children grew up in Manhasset. We love the school district. The teachers were always willing to help. I love the business district. I’m going to give a shout out to Villa Milano. They’re always recognizing everyone who walks into their establishment.

By Christina Claus Charles Cardillo, Manhasset Superintendent I love Manhasset because of the great sense of family and community. This is most evident in the significant pride reflected in the tremendous generosity, support and camaraderie that exists throughout this wonderful community.

Ann Gray Graf, Owner of Actor’s Garage I love Manhasset. It has opened its arms to me since the day I moved here. I say, what I’m sure a lot of people say, I have the best block in town. My daughter was lucky to group up playing in the street with all her neighbors since we moved here. This town has been there to lift me up when I needed it. I plan Halloween for a month in advance as do my neighbors and we welcome every single trick-or-treater.

o residents, Manhasset is not just home to the Miracle Mile, but a place for families to thrive. Manhasset residents agree that their town has a great sense of community, unity in tough times, great school systems and excellent organizations. Residents from the Manhasset Public School Superintendent Charles Cardillo to the owner of the Actor’s Garage Ann Gray Graf, share why they love to call Manhasset their home.

James Only, Pastor at the Congregational Church of Manhasset I love Manhasset because our community rallies around one another. Whether supporting our neighbors who lost loved ones on 9/11, forming Adventures in Learning for our children needing after school social and academic enrichment, founding the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, or supporting the Cardillo family when they lost their home in a fire, Manhasset has a good heart.

Elizabeth Johnson, Editor of Manhasset Press The beauty of Manhasset speaks for itself, with its tree-lined streets and elegant homes, it is paradise to live here. There are many advantages to living in the 11030 zip code that everyone knows—great train line, cute downtown, fabulous school system and the finest shopping on Long Island, but what speaks to me most are the people. Manhassetites are committed to their families and making a better place here than it was before. That is why everyone wants to move here because Manhasset cares. It takes time and energy to make Manhasset a great place to live. Those who sold their homes cared about who was coming in. The next generation moving in was to keep it as glorious as it is. That is why there is the “Manhasset Bubble” a safe place to live, raise your kids and enjoy your family.
