Summer ‘Steam’ At Middle School BY RACHEL HIRSCHHEIMER

Mineola Middle School is currently hosting Camp Invention, a national summer enrichment day camp program sponsored by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Throughout the course of Camp Invention, students in grades 1 through 6 learn different aspects of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) using hands-on tactics. Each section of the program is broken up into two modules. The first week’s module (which took place last week), was called Epic, where students took classes called I Can Invent: Maker Studio, a section in which students utilize reverse engineering by taking apart projects and inventions to create a new product; CrickoBot, where students learn how to create and manipulate solar-powered crickets; The Lab: Where Pigs Can Fly, where students

Fury Automotive Revs Up In Village BY BETSY ABRAHAM

Exotic car drivers will now have one more option as to where to bring their vehicles, as the village board approved the application of Xin Zhang to open Fury Automotive Inc., in Mineola. Zhang plans to open his automotive repair and body work shop at 15 Windsor Court, the former site of Global Telecom Supply. The shop will also include a paint/spray booth, subject to approval of the Nassau County Fire Marshall and subsequent permit from the village building

department. Zhang, who has previous experience working in shops in Queens, said he wanted to open his own business in Mineola because of the opportunity. “I love Mineola. The environment and people are nice. It’s a nice village,” Zhang said, noting it was centrally located between main roads. The Queens-resident said most of his customers come from Nassau County, so he’s hoping to buy a home in Mineola in the next few years. There are several other automotive repair shops in the surrounding area, but Zhang said Fury will

specialize in exotic and high-end cars. “We’ll do modifications to high-end cars. If you buy a used Ferrari, for example, and don’t want to take it to a dealer, we do that,” Zhang said. “We do show cars too, upgrading a particular part of a car to make it more efficient.” There will be three to four employees at the shop and all repair work will be done in the garage. He said he doesn’t plan to have vehicles outside for repair work. Fury Automotive Inc., will be open Monday through Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Zhang plans to open in September.

Turning Garbage Into Gratitude BY BETSY ABRAHAM

What’s the answer to the world’s problems? If you ask Rabbi Anchelle Perl, of the Chabad of Mineola, the answer is simple: gratitude. “If there was more gratitude for each other, it would create more harmony,” Perl said. “If a person has gratitude, he has greater respect for others and it makes the person better, creating human dignity and appreciation. A lot of the problems we have today could be bridged with simple gratitude.” Perl is taking steps towards harmony this summer, with his “salute to sanitation” initiative. Perl, along with

members from the Chabad of Mineola, are visiting sanitation departments all over Nassau County, bringing workers water bottles and expressing thanks for all their hard work. “These people go about their work every day to keep the community clean and healthy. We wanted to reach out to them to show them our appreciation,” said Perl. Perl plans to stop at various other sanitation departments over the summer and expects to meet with 500 workers. The first stop was last Thursday, July 14, as Perl went to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Public Works in Syosset to meet workers and hand out water bottles. The experience was exhilarating and moving, said Perl.

The Mineola Fire Department hosts a number of school children during the year at its headquarters. St. Martin de Porres first-graders have been coming to Mineola for a number of years to learn about fire safety and see how they can learn about the importance of fire prevention. The students recently visited the department once again, and after a short video, were given a tour of the firehouse and its fire trucks and equipment. The highlight of the tour was when the students got the chance to get on the fire trucks, and try on real firemen’s gear. After the tour, all the students received a plastic fire helmet and coloring book to take back to school with them. The first-graders provided the Mineola firemen with a poster of thanks in giving their time to teach them about fire prevention.

Actually, however, the Battle of Antietam was worse. Gettysburg was a three-day event, while the 22,720 casualties at Antietam made it the bloodiest oneday battle in American history. •••• George Solano is a new executive director of The Bristal in Westbury. He formerly held the same position in Armonk but wanted to be closer to his family who live on Long Island. •••• Rhoda Satlin is a professor of political science at Queens College. She comes to The Bristal four or five times a year, speaking and taking questions on politics. Rhoda says that Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump have caught the imagination of the youth, while Hillary Clinton

is often regarded as the same-old, same-old. Bernie has been able to push Hillary to the left which finds her advocating for free college tuition for state universities. Many Democrats are thinking that Elizabeth Warren would be a better candidate than Hillary. Some would like to see a Clinton-Warren ticket, but feel that the public would never elect an all-female slate. •••• On a personal note, I thank those who sent me their good wishes and prayers that my wife, Grace, who was in the hospital would recover. Ironically, Grace was taken to the hospital on the day of our 68th wedding anniversary. I would also like to thank Sister Beth McEneaney, IHM and Sister Beth Pearson, IHM for their visits to see me and to see Grace in the hospital. •••• On a lighter note, Rhoda Satlin told us a joke about a discussion among three men about when life begins. The Catholic said, “At conception.” The Protestant said, “When the child is out of the womb.” The Jewish man said, “Life begins when the last of the kids has left home!”

Parking Lot Now Open

She received warm receptions from the studios and hosts overseas, who sometimes made up roles and parts, especially for her. She ate blowfish on a morning show in Japan, was kicked in the face while milking a sheep for a Turkish reality show and recited a poem in ancient Arabic for a United Arab Emirates program. Cavalli said she is normally pretty bold and daring, but it took an extra dose of “Kodak courage” to do some of the crazy things a show asked her to.

The Village of Mineola recently opened a new parking lot at the corner of 2nd Street and Roslyn Road. The parking field is the first new municipal parking Mineola has added in almost 10 years. The lot was built on property that was deeded at no cost to the Village of Mineola by New York state as part of the Department of Transportation’s Roslyn Road Long Island Rail Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project. The village successfully negotiated the land transfer as part of the project in order to provide additional parking for area residents and business customers. While there is still ongoing work yet to be completed, such as the installation of additional lighting, the basic work needed to convert the lot from a vacant parcel including drainage, paving and curbing was completed ahead of schedule making the lot usable to motorists. “The trustees and I felt that if the lot is usable, it was more important to open the lot to use than to wait for it to be 100 percent complete,” said Mayor Scott Strauss. “Any additional work can be completed while the lot is being used.” Strauss added that this lot offers much needed parking relief in that area of the village. Currently there are no restrictions on non-commercial parking in the new lot, pending the completion of a first-ever village-wide parking study, which will be concluded

In the last two years, Karla Cavalli has found herself walking with elephants in Africa, climbing a coconut tree in the Philippines and herding sheep in New Zealand. The Mineola native’s global adventures are hitting small screens everywhere, through her new gig as host of Travel Channel’s Planet Primetime. Planet Primetime seeks to explore cultures through the shows people watch and are entertained by. On the show, Cavalli explores hands-on the

weird, funny, sweet and wild shows that are popular in countries across the globe. As an active participant, Cavalli gets to see firsthand what makes people around the word laugh, cry and freak out. “A lot of hosts travel and learn about cultures as they’re sitting at a table eating a specific dish, I looked at it through TV,” Cavalli said. “It teaches people about other cultures and traditions around the world through the art form of TV.” As host, Cavalli got the privilege of starring in popular international TV shows, as well as appearing on game shows and

make binary coded bracelets out of initials and learn about marine biology while exploring a squid; and a class called Epic Park where children play eco-friendly games using resources from the park to find gems and minerals in a blowup marsh and examine them. This week, students are designing a small, motor-powered vehicle to race, inventing bionic gadgets and igniting a spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship through personalized video challenges presented by National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees. The camp allows students to not only be educated in different, hands-on ways, but to have fun at the same time. Dana McDonough is serving as director of the program for the third year and believes that Camp Invention is important for a student’s education. The atmosphere of the camp is extremely relaxed, allowing the children to enjoy themselves and learn simultaneously. “The students are learning by actually doing things,” McDonough said. “They are talking to one another and coming up with these ideas within their small groups. It is a lot of fun.” Meagan Fabiitti was the instructor in charge of the CrickoBot class. She challenged students to work together

Students search for “gems” in a pool posing as a marsh. and brainstorm ideas. “A main focus is their group work, collaborating with one another, exploring ideas and being inventive throughout the activity,” Fabiitti said, adding that students learned to respect each other because they had to listen to one another while coming up with designs. Students learn something new each day of Camp Invention. Christina Castello, instructor of Where Pigs Can Fly, believes that “when we are teaching science to younger kids, the best way to do it is with hands-on materials so they are all engaged. The students are all interested and they love it.” The Mineola camp drew 89 students

from all over Nassau County. One camper, Rachael, said she loves coming everyday and learning new things. When asked about her favorite module, she said “They are all pretty great.” The best part about coming to camp everyday, Rachael said, was “being with my friends.” To learn more about Camp Invention and find out about future sites, visit www. campinvention.org.

The Mineola Memorial Library provides a quiet space for Kathie Novak, a volunteer with Literacy Nassau, to hold small group lessons for adults who are looking to improve their English skills. “My goal for my ESL [English as a Second Language] students is to improve their quality of life, by helping them to speak, read and write English,” Novak said. “Becoming literate opens doors and gives them confidence to seek better jobs, as well as giving them the skills to help their children with their homework.” Novak and her three students, Gladys, Alcina and Giada, meet twice a week for two-hour sessions where they work on day-to-day speaking, reading, and writing skills. They learn idioms and expressions, practice skills like making doctor’s appointments and understanding medication instructions, and discuss American government and civics. Novak encourages her students to read newspapers and magazines to practice what they’ve learned, and also assigns them homework, the latest being a biographical essay. Alcina moved from her home in Portugal to the United States when she was 26 years old, and the only words she knew in English were “yes” “no” and “one.” In her biographical essay, she describes the decision she and her husband made to move to America.

“We left my lovely country, my family, my friends and the job I love to do, [to] give a better life for our daughters,” she said. Alcina and her family live in Mineola, and she wants to use the skills she has learned to return to work in accounting, for which she completed her degree in Portugal. “The class has helped so much,” Alcina said. “I’m so grateful to the library for helping people like us. Ms. Novak is a nice teacher to volunteer.” Gladys is from Honduras and lives in Garden City Park with her family. She spoke no English when she arrived in America. “It was difficult for me, then I learned a little bit,” Gladys said. “It is hard with kids, but I am so thankful that I’m learning a lot. I was confused with past, present and future [tenses], but I feel good speaking now.” In her biographical essay homework, Gladys describes leaving her home and moving to America. She and her husband shared apartments with friends to save money, and eventually bought their own house. Both she and her husband have started their own businesses, his in landscaping and hers in coffee. Gladys said her son was surprised, reading her essay and told her, “You do so much for me. You’re the best mom.” Giada is from Italy, living and working as an au pair in Garden City. She knew “just a little bit of English” before coming to the United States and says that Literacy Nassau has “helped so much.”

She misses her family back in Italy, especially her mom, who she says is “always encouraging me to follow my dreams.” Despite missing her family, she loves to travel, and will likely stay in America for another year. Giada has loved her experience here so far, saying, “The thing that I love more of United States is the people’s freedom, because I think that a person must be free to live her life in the exact way she wants. Here, it’s possible.” It was a pleasure to see Novak and her students interact, and it is a testament to their hard work that four women, all speaking different native languages, can talk, read, and laugh together at the library. EDITORIAL Please Don’t Catch ‘Em All Murder. Robbery. Trespassing. Pedophiles. Spying. Infidelity. Identity theft. The wildly successful Pokémon franchise has been around for more than 20 years but, in less than two weeks, these are all things that have been associated with the latest location-based virtual-reality game, Pokémon Go. Businesses, museums, parks and virtually all places wanting to boost foot traffic are hopping on the bandwagon, advertising specials, incentives and discounts specifically for Pokémon hunters. I’ve even seen a university advertising use of the game as an incentive to get potential students to register for summer courses on their campus. My cousin, who lives in Missouri, relayed what appeared to be a zombie apocalypse in his downtown area yesterday. He watched dozens of people holding their cell phones up to their faces and carelessly wandering

through the neighborhood, which led me to think, I don’t want Poke-hunters wandering into my backyard. This has already become a problem, with reports of widespread trespassing and people putting themselves into dangerous situations to capture one of these virtual Pokémon monsters. I don’t know if this is true, but I read that the Army is developing a plan to use the application to teach soldiers how to track and navigate. Seriously? I cannot relate. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reducing Water Waste The easiest way to lower the bills we must pay to live on Long Island is avoiding excess water use. Inside our homes we may have leaks, but they can be quickly mended. For a toilet leak, replacing a worn out flapper can stop its leaking. A tightened connection on a leaky shower head will do the same and taking shorter showers will also help. Having a low flush toilet or installing other water-efficient appliances really helps cut non-essential water loss. Outside we can learn how to water properly. Whether we water our lawns by hand or by an automatic sprinkler system, what is really called for is how much watering is enough. By leaving the grass three inches high, the roots can develop deeper root systems that store water. Therefore, watering for

a long period of time twice a week is sufficient. With an automatic sprinkler system, the installation of sensors helps to determine if enough rainfall has occurred. This will halt the next irrigation cycle. For backyard garden watering, checking the hose to be used is mandatory.If there are leaks, this can often be remedied by tightening or buying a new washer for it, not a new hose. Catching rain water is also a great way to save on water bills. This can be done by setting up a rain barrel under the gutter’s leader near your garden area. Rain water can then be used to grow vegetables and plants. Residents of the Town of North Hempstead are lucky to be able to attend seminars held at the Clark Botanical Gardens and leave with a rain barrel or compost tumbler for only $50. Cirque du Soleil Soars With Paramour BY BETSY ABRAHAM

The circus has come to Broadway. Cirque du Soleil—known for its touring shows that combine circus arts and street performance—debut Paramour, its first Broadway show back in April, bringing high-caliber theatrics and aerobatics to the Lyric Theatre. Paramour follows the story of Indigo (Ruby Lewis), a scarlet-haired singer who is discovered by AJ Golden (Jeremy Kushnier), a powerful movie director looking for his next star. With her earnest, doe-eyed composer, Joey (Ryan Vona) in tow, the pair head off to Hollywood as Golden promises Indigo fame and fortune while Joey tries to write the perfect love song. A love triangle predictably develops, which may be an overdone plotline but lends itself beautifully to scenes like “The Dream” and “Indigo’s Decision,” where Cirque performers capture the complicated emotions of jealousy and love through acrobatics. What the show lacks in storyline, it makes up fully in jaw-dropping theatrics. There is no lack of amusements with Paramour, as the show packs in flips, acrobatics, trapeze and juggling routines that will leave the audience breathless. The world-renowned Atherton brothers—aerial strap artists who dangle dozens of feet in the air holding onto nothing more than long straps—are one of the show’s best acts, as are acrobats Martin Charrat, Myriam Deraiche and Samuel William Charlton who dangle and flip upside down from a trapeze with complete control. Brilliant choreography and strong vocals shine throughout and the show marries well the mixture of Broadway theatrics with circus stunts. While the acrobatics take center stage, performances by Lewis, who makes a memorable debut, and the rest of the cast, help the whole show come together well. Residing at a stylistic crossroads that’s found them influencing legions of bands in the worlds of pop, hard rock, new wave, heavy metal and punk, Cheap Trick has kept the flame burning bright for American rock and roll for the past four plus decades. This year not only found the foursome of Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos rightfully and finally getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the the three members minus Carlos (Nielsen’s son plays drums in Carlos’ stead) released Bang, Zoom, Crazy... Hello, the band’s first studio record in five years and one that has many calling it their best. The following are some other notable parts of the band’s canon you should check out. Cheap Trick (Epic) [1977] - A power pop masterpiece, the combination of killer guitar riffs and stacked harmonies initially went overlooked by American audiences despite the band’s ability to clothe bizarre topics

like suicide (“Oh, Candy”), mass murder (“The Ballad of TV Violence”) and pedophiles (“Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School”) in killer arrangements. In Color (Epic) [1977] More pop manna can be found on Cheap Trick’s sophomore bow including the Beach Boys-inspired “Southern Girls,” the manic album opener “Hello There” and the frenetic studio version of “I Want You to Want Me.” Heaven Tonight (Epic) [1978] - Despite having a slightly slicker production sheen, this collection of songs contains plenty of classics including a sneering song about suicide (“Auf Wiedersehen”), the evils of drugs (the psychedelic title cut) and a killer Move cover (“California Man”). Cheap Trick at Budokan (Epic) [1978] - The band’s breakthrough album

captured a rabid Japanese fanbase’s ardor and carryied it back to Cheap Trick’s home country thanks to stellar live readings of “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender” and a hit cover of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That a Shame.” Dream Police (Epic) [1979] - Fresh off of Budokan’s success, Cheap Trick’s fourth studio album was their most successful commercial outing thanks to the bombastic and ubercatchy title cut, stomping “Gonna Raise Hell” and the yearning “Need Your Love.” Next Position Please (Epic) [1983] - This Todd Rundgren-produced outing is a return to pure pop with a dash of new wave thanks to the harmony-soaked Zander gem “I Can’t Take It,” an earnest reading of The Motors’

“Dancing the Night Away” and an equally poppy take on Rundgren’s “Heaven’s Falling.” Cheap Trick ‘97 (Red Ant Records) [1997] - After a string of lackluster efforts through most of the 1980s and 1990s, this collection found Cheap Trick getting back to writing gems like the bittersweet “Say Goodbye,” poignant “It All Comes Back to You” and chiming “Hard to Tell.” The Latest (Cheap Trick Unlimited) [2009] Opening with the dreampop “Sleep Forever,” Cheap Trick deals out more power pop manna including the jagged “California Girl,” the thrashing “Sick Man of Europe” and a breezy take on Slade’s “When the Lights Are Out.”

With Clean Pass, her daily rides from Melville to East Williston and back have been reduced by about 25 minutes each way, which has not only decreased her stress, but has also saved her money on gas and allowed her to sleep later. Of the approximately 80,000 vehicles that qualify for the program, about 30,000 have Clean Pass stickers, and that number is continuing to increase, said NYSDOT Spokesperson Carol Breen. For this reason, concerns have risen about whether or not it will cause traffic in the HOV lane, but Breen assures that the program is undergoing further study in order to “ensure that the HOV lane is operating as intended, while still promoting the use of fuel-efficient vehicles.” Thus far, she added, the program has been successful, and will continue to be modified and improved according

Long Island Expressway commuters with energy-efficient vehicles are receiving several perks for helping the earth, as they save time, money and gas, and no longer have to experience the hassle of being stuck in traffic. New York’s Clean Pass Program, which was initiated in 2006, is a plan of action intended to foster the usage of more eco-friendly vehicles in order to reduce negative impacts on the environment. The program allows drivers with eligible vehicles to drive in the Long Island Expressway’s HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes without any passengers; the lanes previously permitted buses, motorcycles, and vehicles with two or more occupants only during rush hours—6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Though the lanes are open to other vehicles outside of peak times, being able to use it during these heavy-traffic hours gives hybrid car drivers the advantage of a faster, less-stressful commute. To use the Clean Pass Program, vehicle owners—whose cars must receive an average of 45 miles per gallon or better and meet certain emissions standards—can apply through the State Department of Motor Vehicles and will receive four stickers upon approval, according to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). The stickers are free of charge; applicants simply must call or apply online. Audra Beberman, a Prius-lessee and Clean Pass user from Suffolk County, said the program significantly decreased the time of her commute to and from work. “I kind of expected it to be quicker, but I didn’t realize how much time I would save. [Prior to using Clean Pass] I would sit in traffic for almost an hour, for what should have been a 20-minute commute,” she said.

It was a beautiful day as we drove north on the 101 freeway towards Santa Barbara. The rugged sandy bluffs rose high along the California coast while the sunshine sparkled across the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Thing 1 and Thing 2, then 8 and 5, were trying to sit patiently in the back seat as we drove towards our campground. This was our first outing in our new-to-us, folding camping trailer. To say my heart was happy would be an understatement. I was giddy with excitement. I couldn’t wait to start making fun, family camping memories. Brent and I already had so many from when we were kids, and we wanted to give the same thing to our boys. Not only that, we were ready to relax for the weekend after a long week of work. We were ready to kick up our heels, sit by the fire, and maybe go on a few hikes in the Los Padres National Forest. An hour later we arrived at our campsite, and the boys jumped out of the van. They were busy checking out the campsite when I noticed Thing 2 wasn’t wearing shoes. “Put on your shoes, honey. There might be something sharp.” “I don’t have them,” he replied, playing in the dirt. What? No shoes? Of course, he has shoes. What sort of parent forgets shoes when they go camping? I started searching the van but no luck. In our excitement to hit the road for our first camping experience, we had let him run out the door happy but barefoot. Ooops. Determined not to let this ruin our weekend, we headed up to the camp store. There we bought a pair of flip-flops that he could wear to protect his feet. We may not be going on any long hikes over the weekend, but they would be perfect to wear to the swimming hole on the Santa Ynez River. Wondering if there are things to do (besides remember your child’s shoes.) to make your first time out in your new RV go more smoothly? Read on.

Making a list is probably your most important step. Make copies and give them to all your readers in the family so they can help pack up. Divide your lists into categories: kitchen, meals, bathroom, outdoor activities (bikes, balls, firewood, etc.), indoor activites (games, movies, etc.), pets, family member A, B, C, etc., and don’t forget to include yourself. Start packing a few days ahead of time to avoid the last minute rush. Cross things off as you pack them and just before you pull out of your driveway, take a quick glance at your list to make sure you have everything.

Practice Parking or Driving If you are worried about backing up or driving the RV around, take it out for some practice without the family. It’s a lot easier to practice without kids playing (or arguing) in the back seat. Choose a Saturday or Sunday morning when the roads are less crowded, and drive around a bit. Find a large parking lot with plenty of empty space and back it up a few times. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it gets with a little practice. It won’t be long until you feel like a pro.

Research Test Run Most RVs are so easy to set up you could do it in your sleep, but it doesn’t hurt to do a little test run. Set up your RV in your driveway before you head out. In fact, you may want to do this a few times if you are feeling nervous. Better to figure out how to work the jacks before getting to a campsite after a long drive when you (and everyone else) may be tired. If your RV has slides, always do a slide check when setting or packing up to make sure nothing gets smashed in the slide. Trust us on this one.

A little research ahead of time goes a long way. We are all for spontaneity, but for your first trip in your RV I suggest you have reservations. Double-check that the campground has the amenities you want. If you want electricity, water and sewer, be sure to ask for a full hookup site. You can even ask for a pullthrough site if you are not quite ready for a back-in site. While you are on the Internet, do a quick search for things to do in the area and take a few notes (I take screenshots on my phone and save them to my camera roll). This way if you get to your destination and suddenly realize you don’t have cell phone reception, you’ll still have an idea of what’s in the area. Also don’t forget to double-check your route on the GPS before pulling out of the driveway.

Swim-A-Thon Raises Funds For Winthrop Nearly 175 swimmers made a splash at Winthrop-University Hospital’s 15th annual Swim-a-Thon at Hofstra University’s Swim Center. Participants raised funds for the Hospital’s Child Life Program, a program through which certified Child Life Specialists utilize play and education to improve children’s understanding of medical procedures, teach relaxation techniques to help young patients cope with illness or surgery and provide emotional support for the entire family. The 2016 event raised more than $53,000, bringing this event’s total contributions to the Child Life Program since its inception in 2002 to more than $400,000.

Mineola resident Phil Macchietto is only 11 years old but he’s already making a name for himself in the local bowling world. Long Island held the Pepsi bowling qualifier at AMF Plainview Lanes in March, where Macchietto placed in second, earning him an invitation to bowl in the state scholarship championship in Rome, NY. Twenty bowlers competed for the top scholarship and a chance to go to the Nationals in July. After six games, the top four bowled in a step ladder format. Macchietto placed fourth and defeated the third-place bowler (172-164) then defeated second place (213-169), which put him in position to bowl first place in the title match. Macchietto came out on top, winning (224-185). Averaging 198 after nine games, Macchietto became the NYS Pepsi U-12 champion earning a $1,000 scholarship and an invite to Nationals. Macchietto’s future plans are to continue bowling in his league at AMF
