The Oyster Festival At Theodore Roosevelt Park In Oyster Bay

The North Shore’s waterfront hamlet where you go to play, see, shop and eat

T

he 34th Annual Oyster Festival, on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 15, is a project of the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay, a part of Rotary International and a volunteer organization whose members embrace the motto of “service above self.” Rotary Club volunteers produce the festival, which raises money directly to support local community organizations and Rotary projects through the Oyster Bay Charitable Fund, Inc. The festival also provides local nonprofit clubs and organizations a platform to raise their own funds through participation in the Thomas Reardon Memorial Food Court. In addition to showcasing the historic hamlet of Oyster Bay and the beauty of the waterfront, the Oyster Festival generates great economic impact. More than 150 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt— the 26th President of the United States—was born to a wealthy family that summered in Oyster Bay not far from the waterfront property that today bears his name. Community leaders organized a parade to celebrate his 125th birthday, the roots of which became the Oyster Festival in 1983. Today the festival attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually and its

Jim Fuccio, President, Oyster Judy Wasilchuk, President, Bay Charitable Fund, Inc. Rotary Club of Oyster Bay success is attributed to the year-round dedication of members of the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay and its Long Island business community sponsors. Join us as we welcome the return of the John J. Harvey fireboat, enjoy pirate treasure hunts, two stages of music for all ages, huge tents filled with handmade crafts, carnival rides and games, an

exotic petting zoo and Chris Clark’s Bicycle Stunt Show. Visit Theodore Roosevelt Park’s turf field and participate in scheduled soccer, hockey, basketball and golf activities. And of course devour the freshest, most delicious oysters and seafood, all while supporting local charities. One of the largest fundraisers of its kind, the Oyster Festival is a project of the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay and funded by the Oyster Bay Charitable Fund. Profits from all food court sales directly support the many participating local charities while the proceeds from carnival rides and merchandise sales are donated to additional charities supported by the Rotary throughout the year. Admission is free. Parking is free. Most activities are free. A family friendly event, the Oyster Festival remains alcohol-free and pet-free (except for service animals). The Rotary Club of Oyster Bay and the dedicated Oyster Festival team welcome you, and ask you to please safely enjoy all that the Festival has to offer. We hope that you’ll continue to join us for future festivals, as many do, and visit our quaint hamlet throughout the year.

Enjoy The Beautiful Waterfront The Christeen The Christeen, a 40-foot, gaff-rigged sloop, owned and operated by The WaterFront Center, a nonprofit community sailing and marine education center located in Theodore Roosevelt Park, will be present at Oyster Fest. Christeen connects people to the water through education and recreation, taking out more than 3,000 passengers each year. The oldest surviving oyster sloop in America and a National Historic Landmark, Christeen was originally built in 1883 for Captain William Smith in Glenwood Landing for harvesting oysters in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. For more than 125 years, she has served as an oyster dredge and also as a cargo carrier and live aboard between Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. After surviving 16 major hurricanes, numerous Nor’easters, two sinkings and severe neglect, Christeen was returned home to Oyster Bay in 1992. Volunteers worked with a full-time shipwright and raised more than $300,000 to completely restore and launch Christeen in 1999. Observe West Harbor and Oyster

Bay from a different viewpoint as you cut through the water under sail and look towards the shore. See wildlife, important landmarks, and learn about some of the history of the home of a former President. Schedule: Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. Ages 5 and older. Cost: $25 adults/$10 children under 12 with paying adult

Ida May Project The Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation is building a replica of the historically significant Ida May oyster dredge. The original Ida May was built in Bayville by Frank M. Flower in 1925 as one of the oyster industry’s first powered dredges. The completed replica will be owned and operated by the WaterFront Center for public recreation and marine and maritime education. The mission of the Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corp. is “to preserve Oyster Bay’s maritime heritage by involving the community in traditional boatbuilding projects.” Many volunteers under the guidance of local

The Tom Reardon Memorial Charity Food Court

175712 C

amed in honor of one of the beloved founders of the Oyster Festival, the Tom Reardon Memorial Charity Food Court sponsored by Roslyn Savings Bank is not just the heart of the festival, it is its soul. Food booths are staffed with non-profit employees and volunteers as well as members of the partnering restaurant or catering companies. The profit from each food booth supports that particular charity’s programs; the festival is the largest fundraiser that many of these organizations participate in throughout the year. Each booth features signage clearly stating which charity your purchase is supporting. With more than 60 food choices, even the pickiest eater will find quite a few items to devour. The main attraction, oysters, are available raw on the half shell, fried or in stew. More than 60,000 oysters will be consumed throughout the weekend, and all are donated by the owners of Frank M. Flowers & Sons. Other seafood options include a full lobster dinner, lobster bisque, lobster mac & cheese, lobster rolls, clams

(both raw and steamed), clam chowder, grilled shrimp, soft shell crabs, scallops, crab cakes, crab rolls, seafood gumbo, calamari, fish tacos and more. Meat lovers can munch on baconon-a-stick, meatball sliders, pulled pork sandwiches, steak sandwiches, Philadelphia cheesesteaks, homemade empanadas, sausage and pepper heroes and, of course, traditional American festival fare. Desserts include homemade apple pie a la mode, Belgian waffles with strawberries and cream, deep fried foods, chocolate-dipped treats, frozen hot chocolate, homemade fudge, fruit crepes and more. The festival is serviced by seven ATMs placed throughout Audrey Avenue and within Theodore Roosevelt Park. See the enclosed map for more details. For more than three decades, participating charities based within the Oyster Bay-East Norwich school district have been serving up fresh seafood, ethnic culinary delights and traditional American fare to hundreds of thousands of festival goers. Profits from the Charity Food Court sales remain with each individual non-profit organization that

sells the food item to help fund their programming. The Oyster Festival’s Oyster Booth Food Court, which is sponsored by Newsday, and the Tom Reardon Memorial Charity Food Court, which is sponsored by Roslyn Savings Bank, are the largest fundraisers that many of these organizations participate in throughout the year. For some organizations, it’s their only fundraiser. Oyster Festival Food Court Guide
