BY PORT WASHINGTON NEWS STAFF
PORTWASHINGTON@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
We’d Like to Thank All Our Customers and Friends for Their Support & Patronage We Look Forward to Serving You During 2016.
Port Washington has never looked more festive for the holidays. The Port Washington Chamber of Commerce has decorated the lampposts on Main Street with garland, lights and red bows. The Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID) has installed lit snowflakes on the utility poles. Falconer Florist has decorated the train station with wreaths and garland. Residents For a More Beautiful Port Washington created a winter wonderland in the garden in front of the train station. And stores throughout town have outdone themselves with beautiful window decorations in their attempt to win the Chamber of Commerce Window Decorating Contest. The Chamber’s judges were Sean Beckert of Falconer Florist and Jessica Haas of Port Washington Florist. So many stores participated that it was a challenge to pick just three winners. The judges were
impressed by the effort and creativity that went into so many of the window displays. The judges were able to agree on the following stores as the “best of the best.” The first place winner was Alper’s Hardware at 81 Main St. Their creative holiday display includes figures from Star Wars and Charlie Brown as well as reindeer, which were made using paint cans. Second place went to White + One at 309 Main St. Their entire window sparkles and shines with beautiful decorations and merchandise. Painting With Flowers, located at 298 Main St., won third place for their dazzling seasonal display. The judges were impressed with the many beautiful store decorations throughout the town. They felt one, in particular, deserved recognition. The judges awarded an Honorable Mention to Yummy Gyro, located at 82 Main St., for the spirit and effort that went into their window decorations.

RECLAIMING
AMERICAN HISTORY
Free Parking For Local Shoppers
Reclaiming American History Our business was formed from an abiding respect for our hardworking farmers and the barns, silos and outbuildings that have created the character of the rural American landscape. The farming industry has changed, with a shift from small one-family farms to an industry operating on a much larger scale. Traditional American barns are often abandoned and actually a burden on the property owner, but their wood, stone and even hardware can be repurposed and relocated.

The Port Washington Chamber of Commerce has announced that the Town of North Hempstead (TONH) will suspend parking fees along Main Street and Port Washington Boulevard from Dec. 3 to Dec. 24. Red bags will cover the meters throughout the holiday shopping season. Chamber Copresident Warren Schein thanked TONH Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio, Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the entire TONH board for continuing this holiday tradition. Shoppers will be allowed to park at the meters on Main Street and Port Washington Boulevard and along some commercial side streets including Carlton Avenue, South Maryland Avenue and Irma Avenue, for 90 minutes for free. To discourage commuters from using the street parking spaces meant for shoppers, cars that exceed the 90-minute limit are subject to ticketing. Parking meters will remain in effect in the TONH parking lots. Chamber Copresident Mitch Schwartz said, “This will give Port residents an added incentive to shop locally throughout the holiday season.” There are many other advantages to doing your holiday shopping in Port Washington, including receiving friendly, personalized service and saving time, gas and frustration by not having to travel to malls and look for a parking space in their overcrowded parking lots. It’s always safer to stay close to home when bad weather strikes. Most importantly, shopping locally means you are supporting the merchants that support our town all year. Remember, your local merchants care about you and support the Port community. Did you know that for every $100 spent in locally owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, donations and other expenditures? If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. If you spend it online, nothing comes home. For a copy of the Chamber of Commerce business directory, Try Port First, and suggestions on where to find that special gift locally, call the Chamber office at 516-883-6566 or go to www.pwguide.com. —Submitted by the TONH

Dar Williams To Perform At Landmark Dar Williams is set to perform at the Landmark on Main Street on Friday, Dec. 18, at 8 p.m. She has a new album out, Emerald, and the Landmark has been a regular stop for her over the years. “I’ve performed at the Landmark many times,” said Williams. “I love it there. The Landmark board always comes to see me before a performance and, when you’re on the road as much as I am, you like feeling that your performance is part of something larger and cool about the town, like the Landmark.” Williams continued, “The acoustics and sound are great at the Landmark. They decided
long ago that they were going to do it right. I’ve been to places where the sound guy is also the bartender. The Landmark has a great sound system in place; they do it really well.” Williams’ new album, Emerald, is named for her 20 years of travel. “I’ve made many friendships and seen many beautiful places. I can look back now and see what a beautiful life I’ve had, that it’s been like a jewel. I have perspective now. I recorded it in seven different studios, I have 12 friends on the record with me and I’ve covered songs I love.” Lucy Wainwright Roche is opening the show. “I will definitely

Christmas Arrives With Tree Lighting The 18th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Blumenfeld Park at the Landmark on Main Street was held on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 4:30 p.m. The weather was perfectly chilly and dry for the event. A large crowd turned out from the community to enjoy the choral music, live nativity scene and pageant. There were complimentary hot drinks and refreshments. Ornaments were available for decorating and placing on the tree. The pageant began at 4:30 p.m., with a live nativity and a narration of the Christmas story. Following the lighting of the tree, there was a performance by dancers from Danceworks. The pageant concluded around 5:30 p.m. with the arrival of Santa, who had a gift for each girl and boy. This joyous occasion has been organized for the past 18 years by The Christmas Tree Lighting Committee made up of Port Washington residents and business owners. The committee is self-sustaining and fully responsible for organizing and financing the festivities. A special “thank you” goes out to the businesses and individuals who donated their services and their time for the successful raffle fundraiser in November.
DAR WILLIAMS from page 10D get her up on stage with me,” said Williams. “She’s a good friend and a great talent.” Williams is accompanied by her keyboard player, Bryn Roberts. “The Landmark has been a success story,” said Williams. “I feel like I’m part of that family.” The show is sponsored by Massage Envy, WFUV and the Tepper Family Foundation. The Jeanne Rimsky Theater at Landmark on Main Street brings world-class performing artists and children’s theater to the Port community. Tickets are $50 for premium seats, $40 for select seats and $32 for standard. For more information go to www.landmarkonmainstreet.org or call 516-767-1384.

Berest Dance Makes Spirits Bright BY MAURA VERNICE
MVERNICE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Making Spirits Bright is a fantasy of dance to be performed on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 3 p.m. at the Jeanne Rimsky Theatre at the Landmark on Main Street. This show, directed by Olga Berest of the Berest Dance Center, has a cast of children ages 5 through 18, and will delight the audience with a holiday theme that embraces a child’s world. Angels, toys, elves, reindeer, rockettes and a hip-hop Santa come alive. Even the children in the audience have an opportunity to dance. Berest will invite boys and girls to join her on stage as she creates the Nutcrackers’ battle of mice and soldiers during intermission.
Weeks of preparation go into the show. Berest said, “80 dancers take rehearsal classes for 10 weeks. Classes are according to age and level and each class is up to two hours long. Each class learns two or three dances. Being in our show requires a huge time commitment for dancers and parents who have to make sure they have transportation to and from the rehearsals every week.” The extravagant costumes are as gorgeous as you would see at Lincoln Center. “Who hasn’t dreamed of being an angel or in a Santa’s reindeer kickline,” said Berest. Berest continued, “At the final rehearsal the weekend before the show, 80 dancers come together for the first time to assemble the acts. It’s magical, even after so many years.”
The spirit of giving has been a tradition with Making Spirits Bright for years. Since 1994, the Berest families have brought new, unwrapped toys to the Berest show. Thousands of toys have been given
to charities over the years and the Landmark’s own Children Center is a recent recipient. To purchase tickets to Making Spirits Bright online go to www.berest dance.com or call 516-944-6687.

Holiday Florals From Amaranthus On Main MVERNICE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Amy Ventura, owner of Amaranthus on Main, wants to help you decorate your home for the holidays. Visit the graciousTabletop ly styled Christmas Amaranthus tree on Main, at 162 Main St., to see Ventura’s selection of exquisite holiday floral arrangements, centerpieces, wreaths, silk arrangements and plants. “Tabletop Christmas trees are something we are doing this year,” said Ventura. The miniature trees are displayed around the store and are each decorated uniquely (see photo above). “We also create custom
holiday centerpieces, as well as wintergreen centerpieces. My custom silk centerpieces and arrangements are also popular now.” Potted plants can be gorgeous for the holidays as well. “We have Christmas cactus, lemon cypress, winter fern and amaryllis,” said Ventura. Ventura stocks a selection of interesting gifts like apothecary candles, Vermont Stone Soldier pottery and other unique items. Floral designer Nicole displayed some of the unique wreaths (pictured below, right), both live and fake, that Ventura has to offer. No less than eight different styles of wreaths were in the store on the evening of Port Holiday Magic on Main. Ventura’s store was stocked with treats for visitors for the Port Holiday Magic festivities. Her husband, Art, their children and other relatives were on hand as well to help make visitors to the store feel welcome. Ventura carries gift cards for the holidays, or any time of year, too. Amaranthus on Main is located at 162 Main Street. For more information, call 516-767-6601 or go to www.amaranthuson main.com.

Wit & Whim Creates A Message Of Hope
BY PORT WASHINGTON NEWS STAFF PORTWASHINGTON@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
In a little corner of Long Island, big things are happening. One hundred twenty-five wooden gingerbread figurines, decorated by children and seniors from all over the world, have been strung together to send a message of hope. The lofty project began 10 months ago when Laurie Scheinman, owner of wit & whim, a unique gift shop, invited 80 elementary schools and senior centers from around the globe to participate in its grand holiday window display. Each participant was encouraged to decorate a 7-inch, wooden gingerbread figurine in the spirit of the holiday season. The beautifully adorned dolls were returned from near and far and have been strung together like paperdoll garland, holding hands to represent “Hands Across the Waters,” the name of the collaboration. “The project was a lot of work,” said Scheinman. “But in these turbulent times, the windows send a message of peace. I hope everyone visits the shop to see our inspiring windows and to gift and give back this holiday season.”
Two local schools, East Hills Elementary School in Roslyn and Guggenheim Elementary in Port Washington, along with Port Washington Senior Citizens Center, participated in the project. The local seniors, whose work is mixed and mingled with those from around the world, will celebrate the installation over tea and lunch at wit & whim on Dec. 9. Last year, the nationally acclaimed shop won several awards for its “Small World,” holiday window display, and Scheinman said she wanted the windows to be even bigger and better this year. Wit & whim opened its doors three years ago to rave reviews for its eclectic mix of handmade, vintage,

Broadway’s Steven Lutvak Returns To Sands Point Preserve Steve Lutvak
Broadway composer Steven Lutvak and friends return to Sands Point Preserve for the annual “Not Quite Christmas Cabaret” on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. This year, the cabaret takes place at Hempstead House, once the home of Daniel and Florence Guggenheim, who lavishly entertained their guests inside their enormous Gold Coast mansion. Lutvak, the composer of the recent Tony Award-winning A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, is bringing a starry lineup that includes Catherine Walker, Jeff Kready and Catherine Porter. The cabaret is a homecoming of sorts for Lutvak. He’ll be back again at the Preserve in February for the Valentine’s Night Cabaret, a benefit evening, featuring Tony-winning and Gentleman’s Guide star Jefferson Mays. “I love the spaces at the Preserve,” said Lutvak, about his return to the

Guggenheim Estate. “I’ve grown to love the audience. I have such a history with them. My life has changed in such wonderful ways, it’s great to go back.” As to the decision to hold the cabaret at Hempstead House, Sands Point Preserve’s Managing Director Beth Horn said, “This magnificent mansion is in critical need of exterior restoration work. To bring awareness to the campaign to Save Hempstead House, this evening will take place throughout its grand rooms, the Palm Court, winter and summer living rooms, billiards room, library and dining room, as if we are guests of the Guggenheims.” Lutvak made his Broadway debut as composer and co-lyricist of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, which won the Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle and Tony Awards for Best Musical. He’s also written a dozen-plus musicals, and has performed his material at Carnegie Hall, The Oak Room at the Algonquin, Rainbow and Stars, the Russian Tea Room and other New York cabaret rooms. This year’s “Not Quite Christmas Cabaret” marks the first time he brings a night of his original music, including standalone songs and selections from Gentleman’s Guide, Esmeralda, Stuff Comes Out and The Wayside Inn, a show based on an A.R. Gurney play, to the Preserve. The artists have “sung a ton of my music over the years,” Lutvak said, and appear regularly on Broadway and venues in New York City and nationwide. For the “Not Quite Christmas Cabaret,” Walker is taking the night off from her role as Phoebe D’Ysquith in Gentleman’s Guide. Previously she performed as Mary Poppins on Broadway, where she also performed in Ragtime. Kready starred as Monty Navarro in Gentleman’s Guide. Other Broadway credits include Billy Elliot the Musical, Sunday in the Park with George and Les Misérables. Catherine Porter starred in Next to Normal on Broadway, in Sunset Boulevard opposite Hugh Jackman and sang with Michael Crawford in The Music

of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Recently she performed at the Preserve in Shotgun Wedding. The Dec. 12 evening promises to be inviting for fans and performers alike. “I love supporting and being at this venue,” Lutvak said. “It’s like coming home and performing in front of friends.” “We’re thrilled to welcome Steve back to the Sands Point Preserve,” Horn said. “He is extraordinarily talented, as are all of the artists who perform with him, and they make these evenings great fun.” Tickets for “Not Quite Christmas Cabaret” are $100 for members of the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve, $110 for nonmembers, and include
cocktails, buffet dinner by Philip Stone and dessert with the artists. To purchase cabaret tickets, visit www.thesandspointpreserve.org or call 516-304-5076, or visit the Gate House at 127 Middle Neck Rd., Sands Point, open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new 12-month membership is available online, at the Gate House or by calling 516-571-7901. Friends of the Sands Point Preserve is a nonprofit organization with the mission to protect and preserve the 216-acre waterfront grounds and historic mansions, and to provide a range of cultural arts events and educational programs for families and schools in the Phil Dejana Learning Center.
