n Saturday, Sept. 14, the 31st annual Pride in Port celebration will begin at 11 a.m. and won’t end until 11 p.m. The day’s event line-up begins with the annual Hall of Fame ceremony and breakfast, which starts at 9 a.m. in Schreiber High School’s cafeteria. Each year, Schreiber alumni who excelled in one or more sport are honored. This year’s inductees are Arnold Donado (2007), Roberta Meo (1998), Thomas Murray (2002), Lisa Vogeley (2003), Katharine Zebroski Boiko (2002) and Megan Zebroski (2004). The parade, which begins at 11:30 a.m., demonstrates tremendous community pride through participation by nearly every Port school and many local organizations. celebrates its 40th year of service in 2019. Unfortunately, due to construction on the Weber field, Family Fun Day has been cancelled this year. Other events planned along campus drive include the homecoming football game and a luncheon honoring senior citizens. The game begins at 2 p.m. and includes an Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony during halftime. The senior luncheon will be held in the Schreiber cafeteria starting at 12:30 p.m. No reservations are needed and the Town of North Hempstead is providing bus transportation from the Port Washington Senior Citizens Center parking lot to the parade and senior luncheon, then back to the Center at about 2 p.m. At 7 p.m., the annual “Taste of Port Washington” dinner dance kicks off
at the Polish-American Hall. Lifelong Port Washington resident Martha Monfort Knowles is being honored posthumously as the 2019 Community Honoree because of her tireless devotion to the Port Washington community throughout her 100-year-long life. Dozens of local restaurants generously donate food for the cocktail hour and dinner. Entertainment features performances by Sequel and there will be dozens of great raffle prizes. Dinner Dance tickets can be purchased in advance for $35 per person on eventbrite. com (search Pride in Port) or by calling 516-883-6566 or 516-883-6693. The event often sells out, but if there are still seats available, tickets can be purchased at the door for $40 per person. Fire Medic Company No. 1 Named Grand Marshal BY CHRISTINA CLAUS

ire Medic Company No. 1 is celebrating its 40th anniversary of providing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the Port Washington community. To celebrate its 40th year, the company has been named Pride in Port’s Grand Marshal. Unlike most EMS companies in New York State, Fire Medic No. 1’s volunteers focus on providing the community with 24-hour coverage 365 days a year without being required to fight fires. The company operates a stateof-the-art fleet of vehicles that
include four Advanced Life Support ambulances, along with a Primary Response Vehicle that provides quick response by training EMTs and Paramedics. Although Fire Medic Company No. 1’s members are not required to fight fires, they work alongside other Port Washington Fire Department companies during fires and other rescue calls. Many of Fire Medic’s members have volunteered for decades, three of which have been with Company No. 1 since it was incorporated in 1979. Fire Medic Company No. 1 operates out of its headquarters, which provides operational, living, meeting

and overnight accommodations for the members who take duty in scheduled shifts, located at 65 Harbor Rd. Anyone interested in volunteering with Fire Medic Company No. 1 can call 516-883-0224 to schedule a visit. The Port Washington News asked Julian Faccibene, Captain of Port Washington Fire Department Fire Medic Co. No. 1 about what it means to the company to be named grand marshals. Q: Why do you feel Fire Medic Co No 1 was chosen to be this year’s Pride in Port Grand Marshal? A: Fire Medic Co. No. 1 is celebrating 40 years of outstanding service to the Port Washington Community. We have estimated that we have helped more than 100,000 people. Our neighbors. Q: What does it mean to you and to the company to be chosen? A: It is a tremendous honor. We volunteer for self satisfaction. It means a lot to have our community recognized our efforts and honor us with this award. Q: What will the company’s role be during Pride in Port? A: Fire Medic Co. No. 1 has been given the honor of leading the Pride in Port parade. Leading us will be three women who have been with Fire Medic Co. No. 1 since the beginning. Q: How many volunteers are part of Medic Co. No. 1? A: Presently, we have 75 women and men. In addition, there are about 40 members of the other PWFD fire companies that still help with the EMS calls. We estimate that the total number of people who have volunteered as members of Fire Medics in

the last 40 years is probably close to 1,000 members of the community. Q: Why is it so important that Port Washington have Fire Medic Co. No. 1? A: The community needs a group of individuals who are dedicated primarily just to providing top-quality EMS ambulance service to our citizens. The Fire Medic Company was formed 40 years ago by the Port Washington Fire Department when emergency medical service ambulance work became too technically complex and required too much training for people that also needed to be fully proficient and keep up with all the training required to be firefighters. Q: What are the company’s three biggest accomplishments in the last 50 years of existence? A: Fire Medic Co. No. 1 is the first of its kind in New York State—an EMS company within a Fire Department that does not require its members to fight fires. Fire Medic Co. No. 1 is and has been a diverse group. Currently, the male to female mix has always been around 50 percent, but generally slightly more women than men. Forty years ago in the first month, Fire Medic Co. No. 1 answered 62 calls. Today, we are averaging close to 300 calls monthly. Q: What is most rewarding about being part of the company? A: The greatest reward is knowing that you are helping people of the Port Washington community and making a difference in people’s lives, including your own. —Additional reporting by Debbie Greco Cohen

artha Monfort Knowles was a lifelong resident of Port Washington. She died on Jan. 31, at the age of 100. This year, Knowles will be honored posthumously as the community honoree at Pride in Port. Knowles’ father-in-law, Austin F. Knowles, started Knowles Funeral Home in 1905. Martha helped out with the business and took it over upon her husband George’s death in 1971, and continued to run it until her death. As a Monfort, Martha’s family were some of the earliest settlers of the Cow Neck peninsula as well as being Revolutionary War patriots. Q: What was Martha like? Susan Knowles Michaels: Martha was a fierce competitor, whether sailing with Port Washington Yacht Club on Manhasset Bay, bowling at Bay Bowl (and across New York State),
Martha Knowles with family and friends. golfing at North Hempstead Country Club or doing business. In 100 years of life, she never stopped learning. She was using Excel spreadsheets on the computer at 99 years of age. She

firmly believed in doing business in Port Washington and supporting local merchants. She was a member of the Lions Club and the Eastern Star. She and my father (George B. Knowles), were instrumental in raising funds for the erection of the John Philip Sousa Band Shell (with Gay Pearsall, as well as Floyd and June Mackey). While her 24/7 schedule as a funeral director didn’t leave her with much time for hands-on volunteering, she supported virtually every organization in town with contributions. Martha was born in Port, lived here all her life, died and was buried in Port—she was the quintessential “Clam Digger” (heir to the proprietary recipe for Monfort clam chowder, which she guarded to her grave). Pam Monfort (McDonough): She was a trailblazer. I really was amazed how she took over the Funeral Home, which was a male-driven business in the ’70s. Unheard of, but she always did everything to the max, she never left anything behind. She was a bowler at Bay Bowl, golfer at North Hempstead, sailer at Port Yacht Club, which she was the longest
member of for many, many years. She loved playing Solitaire and Spite and Malice. She knit, crocheted, provided beautiful holiday gatherings, had a pool in her back yard for everyone to gather. She did charitable work with her knitting, and when her eyes could no longer see, she braided baggies for the homeless. She never stopped giving. I remember one snow storm in the ’70s, the ambulance couldn’t get through and she had a snowmobile with a cart (So did my father. We would ride everywhere when we could) that took the patient up to St. Francis, just doing her part. Her grandfather was a founding member of the Port Washington Fire Department and her husband was also a proud member of Atlantic Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1. Q: Why was Martha chosen as this year’s Pride in Port honoree? Monfort: She was chosen because of her dedication to the community and her willingness to do anything for the town and its community—she rarely said no. She was a proud member of the community and had

an amazing remembrance of the town. One of our last conversations was where things were. As always, I wished I taped the conversation. She never said no to any group that came to her for support, a donation, a sponsorship. She carried out the Monfort and Knowles name proudly and considerably. Q: What does it mean to you and your family that she was chosen? Monfort: We are all very proud of the honor. I wish she was here to see it, actually. She never had a sick day in her life, except to have babies. Unfortunately, her last month was the only time she was sick, and because of her age, muscles atrophied. I really thought she would have still been here. Her daughters and family are all here to help honor her. Family comes from Texas, Buffalo, Kingston and other places, but they have all joined in the celebration of her life.
Thank You To Our Sponsors The Pride in Port committee wishes to thank all sponsors for their generosity. Their donations help offset costs of the day’s events so more college scholarships can be awarded to graduating seniors at the end of the 2019-20 school year. Q: How will the community and your family remember Martha? Monfort: I want to hope that she touched so many lives in town, either through business, clubs in town or through her generosity that people in Port Washington would want to emulate her. There aren’t too many in town that do so much. She ran a business and was also charitable. She remembered how Port Washington was and would speak of the importance of respect, generosity and dedication to the community.

Awards Presented To 2019 Graduates
T
he Schreiber High School Graduates Awards ceremony included Pride in Port awards and a scholarship. Recipients are chosen based on their high level of “Pride in Port.” The Barbara Faticone Pride in Port Scholarship is given to a senior who best demonstrates the same volunteer qualities of the Pride in Port committee’s beloved co-chair, Barbara Faticone. A lifelong resident of Port Washington, Barbara’s community involvement spans 50 years with dozens of organizations. Based on her dedication to our community, Rebecca Orlick was chosen as the recipient of the 2019 Scholarship. “It is impressive and heartwarming to learn how many things the students volunteer for while still in school,” Faticone said. “Rebecca truly
exemplifies what Pride in Port is all about. We are very proud to honor her.” The Pride in Port Community Service Awards are given to seniors who make significant contributions to Pride in Port, such as the pep rally, parade, etc. The 2019 Community Service Award recipients are Symphony Chang and Marissa Miscioscia. The Pride in Port committee extends thanks and appreciation to these students for their exceptional dedication to the community. This year’s Pride in Port celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14. The day’s events begin with a parade at 11:30 a.m., senior citizen luncheon at 12:30 p.m., homecoming football game at 1:30 p.m. and the “Taste of Port Washington” dinner dance at 7 p.m. Visit Pride in Port’s Facebook page for details.

It’s all about the journey. “Every year at this time, I reflect - I look back on my year and realize how many amazing people have let me into their lives to share their home journey. There are so many new wonderful people, that I feel lucky to have met and brought into our community. Some were old friends that moved to their dream homes. Others needed a partner to move to another chapter in their lives, and I am honored that they chose me. I am grateful. I feel blessed.
