Grand Marshals Carl Lalena And Jerry Rudnick BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON

This year’s parade grand marshals are Carl Lalena and Selwyn “Jerry” Rudnick. Lalena is a former New York City detective and World War II Navy veteran and at nearly 91 years young, he has more energy than most people 20 years his junior. Lalena gives tirelessly to those in need, cooking and baking at home, preparing meals for the sick and disabled members of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. He accompanies challenged teenagers to the Ronald McDonald House where he teaches them how to bake muffins and prepare baked ziti for the families staying there with seriously ill children, while also traveling to the Rosemary Kennedy Center in Bellmore every month to teach a class how to make pizza or cookies. To these grateful students, he’s known as “Uncle Carl.” Often he does all of these things in one day—and with a smile and a sense of humor. He serves on several boards and is an incredible cook. Lalena is devoted to the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset/Port Washington

Grand Marshals Carl Lalena and Selwyn ”Jerry” Rudnick and has held many positions within the organization. “For a 91-year-old senior, I am honored and proud to have been selected,” said Lalena, whose brother

John is proud of his big brother being named grand marshal. For more than 50 years, Rudnick has devoted himself to the community by serving on several boards.

He is dedicated to the Kiwanis Club, holding every position, and last year was recognized internationally for his talent at cultivating new membership. He was an Air Force captain and after the war became a stockbroker, eventually retiring from Merrill Lynch. Rudnick is a dynamo who is involved with the VFW, Kiwanis, Universalist Unitarian Church at Shelter Rock, the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and the Port Washington Senior Center, just to name a few. His ability to sign up volunteers is legendary in the Kiwanis community and has earned that title internationally as well. Honorees for the Pride in Port dinner dance are the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset and Port Washington. Kiwanis’ mission is to serve the needs of children through camp Kiwanis, scholarships, pediatric trauma kits and so much more. The Schreiber and Manhasset High School Key Clubs are the junior ambassador clubs that are supported by Kiwanis International. A portion of the profits from the evening’s event will be used to award college scholarships for students.

A Celebration Of Pride In Port BY DEBBIE GRECO

The 29th annual Pride in Port celebration will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16. The day’s events begin with the annual Hall of Fame ceremony and breakfast, which will begin at 9 a.m. in Schreiber High School’s cafeteria. Each year, Schreiber alumni who excelled in one or more sport are honored. This year’s inductees are Steven Butcher (Class of 1982), Charles Hoffman (1982), Brandon Kurz (1998), Lindsay Levin (2003) and Richard Marra (1956). The parade, which begins at 11:30 a.m., demonstrates tremendous community pride through participation by nearly every Port school and many local organizations. The parade starts at Main Street near Belleview Avenue and ends on Campus Drive. This year’s Grand Marshals are Carl Lalena and Jerry Rudnick, both of whom devote countless hours each year helping with many different organizations and events. Soon after the parade ends on Campus Drive, Family Fun Day begins

The organization’s members are being recognized for their exceptional devotion to Pride in Port and the

entire community. Dozens of local restaurants generously donate food for the cocktail hour and dinner. Entertainment features performances by Encore, and there will be dozens of raffle prizes. Pride in Port’s Senior Citizen Luncheon will take place again this year at the Schreiber High School cafeteria on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon will be served by student volunteers from Schreiber High School. Activities will include a DJ and a dance performance. This free luncheon is sponsored by Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, S.F. Falconer’s Florist and Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation. The Schreiber cafeteria is fully accessible from the entrance just north of the main entrance. Bus transportation is available to and from the luncheon. The bus will leave the Manorhaven Senior Center at 10:30 a.m., stop at the bus stop at Landmark on Main Street at 10:45 a.m. and arrive at the Long Island Rail Road station at 11 a.m., where there will be special seating for viewing the Pride in Port parade. When the parade ends, the bus will go to Schreiber cafeteria for the luncheon. Afterwards, the bus will take the seniors back to the railroad, Landmark and the senior center. Pride In Port Scholarships And Awards During Schreiber High School’s awards ceremony last spring, several graduating seniors also received Pride in Port awards and a scholarship. Each year, the Pride in Port scholarship committee selects graduating seniors who have demonstrated a high level of “Pride in Port.”

The Barbara Faticone Pride in Port Scholarship is given to a senior who best demonstrates the qualities of the Pride in Port committee’s beloved co-chair, Barbara Faticone. A lifelong resident of Port Washington, Faticone’s community involvement spans dozens of organizations. This scholarship recognizes a student’s activities that show commitment in Port Washington. Based on her dedication to the community,

Melissa Signorini was chosen as the recipient of the 2017 Scholarship. “I am always so overwhelmed by the incredible things the students have already achieved before graduating from high school,” said Faticone. “Melissa has done so much for our community. We’re very proud of her.” Pride in Port Community Service Awards are given to high school seniors who have made a significant

contribution to one or more Pride in Port activity, such as the pep rally, parade, etc. The 2017 Community Service Award recipients were David Ferguson, Jacob Marshall and Christopher Pietrantonio. The Pride in Port committee extends thanks and appreciation to these students for their exceptional dedication to the Port Washington community and wishes them much good fortune throughout their lives.

Schreiber Athletics 2017 Hall Of Fame Inductees Richard Marra Class Of 1956

Richard (Dick) Marra was a three-sport athlete at Schreiber in football, basketball and baseball. He was among the exceptional athletes on these outstanding teams in the mid 1950s. During those years, there were freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams. Marra started on the freshman teams, or JV, in his sports before moving on to a successful varsity career. He was a point guard on the basketball team and earned the Coaches Award. He played offensive center and defensive linebacker on the football team. It was on the baseball field that he excelled. He was a three-year varsity player and batted over .400 in each of those years. He anchored the defense at the catcher’s position and was key to the success of the team, as they captured the 1955 North Shore Champion Team. Marra was awarded the MVP senior year and the LI Press North Shore Award in baseball. He was also class president. Upon graduation, Marra continued to play baseball at Union University. He came back to Port and practiced pharmacy in the community for 40 years, most notably at Hunold’s Pharmacy. The Marra family is fourth-generation Port Washington and Schreiber High School. His dad, Joe, was a captain of the 1928 basketball team and his daughter, Jennifer, a two-year captain in 1985 and 1986. He is married to Susan Gaita, also Class of 1956, and has three children: Richard, Linda Murphy and Jennifer Cronin, a member of the Hall of Fame, who recently passed away. We congratulate Dick Marra as he joins the Schreiber Athletics Hall of Fame.

Steven Butcher was a decorated and outstanding gymnast. In the early 1980s, the Schreiber gymnastic program was among the elite programs in Nassau County. The three years Butcher was a member of the team, it was undefeated. Two of the three years the team was runner-up in the county tournament before winning the county championship in his senior year. For all three years on the team, Butcher was an individual-medal winner, and in his senior year, a double-medal winner. He was a specialist in pommel horse and vault. He qualified for the State Championship as an individual qualifier in the vault. He finished in the top eight in the state, but sustained a neck injury that ended his career and precluded him from accepting college scholarship offers to Syracuse and Temple. Instead, Butcher went to San Diego State and became an NCAA judge while a student. This jump started his illustrious career in international gymnastics. His passion for gymnastics never wavered as he coached girls gymnastics in San Diego and was named Coach of the Year, and was the Men’s Gymnastics Junior National Team Coach. He continues today as an international-level judge of gymnastics and has judged in the Pan Am Games, World Championships, Olympic Trials and Olympics. Butcher has been an Olympic judge in the past three Olympics: Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. Butcher is currently living in Lausanne, Switzerland, with his wife of 11 years, Kathy. They have a son, Brady, age 4. We congratulate Steven Butcher on his induction into the Schreiber Athletics Hall of Fame.

Charles Hoffman Class Of 1982

Charles Hoffman was an outstanding runner in cross country, indoor and spring track and field. He was a nine-letter athlete and was named MVP for cross country and All County in spring track and field his senior year. Hoffman was a versatile runner as he was fast enough to run the 440-yard run on the mile relay, while also maintaining the strength and endurance to run all of the middle- and long-distance races. On the track and field teams he ran the half-mile, mile, two-mile, mile relay and twomile relays outdoors. He added the 600 in the indoor season. Hoffman placed and medaled in the division, conference and county meets and was selected captain of the indoor and spring track teams in his senior year. It was in the senior year the team was undefeated. Upon graduation from Schreiber, Hoffman continued running at Muehlenberg College. He ran for two years at the collegiate level on the cross country, indoor and spring track and field. Hoffman is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who practices in Glen Cove and the Bronx. He is married for 27 years to Daria Hoffman. They have two children, Lauren, 22, who is at Yeshiva University studying for her master’s in social work, and Samantha, 19, a junior at Hofstra. We congratulate Charles Hoffman on his induction into the Schreiber Athletics Hall of Fame.

Brandon Kurz Class Of 1998

Brandon Kurz was an outstanding football and baseball player at Schreiber. On the football team, he played quarterback and strong safety. He was named captain of the team senior year and earned the Costello Award as the most outstanding football player of the season. His outstanding play earned him the All County Honorable Mention Award from the coaches in Nassau County. On the baseball field, Kurz was a stellar pitcher and played shortstop on the non-pitching days. He was named captain his senior year and was awarded the Charles Hoins Award as the most outstanding baseball player and was named to the All County Team. Kurz moved on to be a successful pitcher on the collegiate level playing for NYIT. He finished fourth in the All Independent Conference for pitchers and was the recipient of the Harold J. Hirschfield Award. Kurz went on to play professional baseball in Milan, Italy. He is presently the director of the Port Washington Youth Activities (PYA) and runs the sports programs in grades K-8. He was the founder and owner/operator of the Long Island Whalers Baseball from 2006-15. Kurz is married to Jaclyn Marino Kurz and are proud parents of newborn Gracie Elizabeth. He is the proud son of Donald and Jeanne Kurz. We congratulate Brandon Kurz on his induction into the Schreiber Athletics Hall of Fame.

Lindsay Levin Class Of 2003

Lindsay Levin is one of Schreiber’s most prolific athletes. She was a three-sport athlete in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. Her accomplishments in field hockey and lacrosse were outstanding. She culminated her four-year career on the field hockey team by being a captain of the Nassau County Champions and was named three-time All County and two-time All State, as well as a Newsday All Long Island team selection. Her exceptional speed made her a worthy opponent and her stick work was the envy of other teams. She earned the Ellen Herman Award as MVP of the field hockey team. In lacrosse, she played for four years and made an immediate impact from her freshman year. She helped lead her team to a County Championship in 2000. She was named an All-State player in her sophomore and junior years and a Newsday All Long Island selection. Her outstanding play culminated with a U.S. Lacrosse All American selection and a U.S. Lacrosse Academic All American selection. She was invited to tryout for the U.S. National Team. Levin went on to play lacrosse at Yale University, where she played for four years and was selected the sole captain senior year. She was named Second Team All Ivy and earned All Academic honors. She was an instrumental player in helping Yale get to the NCAA tournament. Levin is currently working in California for Google as a senior content strategist on Android. She was married in 2015 to David Chaput and lives in the Bay Area while enjoying life in northern California. Congratulations to Lindsay Levin on her induction into the Schreiber Athletics Hall of Fame.

Bartels and Roy Smitheimer who were the chairmen of the first Pride in Port Committee. The group included Phillip L. Cross, Regina Fainaccio, Joseph Guarino, Jason Kesselman, Joseph Marro, Andrea Martone, Carmine Matina, Thomas Mohrman, Rom Romeo, Warren Schein, Frank, Scobbo, Frank Tomeo and Peter Zwerlein.
