Pride In Port Extends Back To Yesteryear Let’s take a virtual trip back in time to 1916 to get a feel for what Pride in Port meant then. Imagine you’re standing near the entrance to the town dock with your back to the water. To your immediate right is Louie’s—a clam shack along the water’s edge (the dock wasn’t nearly as big then). Enjoy a bowl of hot chowder made with clams harvested that morning while standing at the outside counter. Nearby, the locals are chatting about everything

from the quality of this year’s oyster harvests to how “the town isn’t what it used to be now that the city folk are moving in.” Continue along the shoreline to your right past the boathouse and blacksmith shop—where Louie’s stands today. Looking out onto Manhasset Bay, a sailboat race is in full swing. As usual, they have to navigate around the planes, boats and barges on the bay. Here comes a small barge being pulled by a boat carrying freshly harvested oysters, clams and mussels. It’s impossible not to hear the drone of flying boats (seaplanes of yesteryear) taxiing, taking off and landing. Look across to what is now Manorhaven Park to see if any celebrities or dignitaries are disembarking. Here comes a paddlewheel excursion boat at the mouth of Manhasset Bay. It’s making its way to the Locust Grove dock and pavilion—just west of what is now Manorhaven Park—to

drop off passengers for the day or weekend. Can you hear the faint sounds of the sand conveyors on the eastern shore near the Hotel Renwick (Diwan) and the Mill Pond? See Manhasset Isle over there? Before it was mined for sand, it was about 50-feet higher in elevation. That oyster and clam shack on Sunset Park’s northern shore is bustling with activity now that the barge has landed with its fresh catch of the day. Directly in front of you across the street is Bradley’s Hotel. You can’t help but smell the famous seafood cuisine wafting your way. Look closely—you just might see a famous politician, actor or athlete on the veranda. As your journey ends, look behind you along the water’s edge to see people taking casual strolls, fishing, walking down the ramp onto the beach or the swimming platform. Port Washington was then and still is a place that evokes great pride.

PRIDE IN PORT • SEPTEMBER 14 - 20, 2016

Fred Falconer Is The 2016 Pride In Port Grand Marshal The Pride in Port parade Grand Marshal this year is Port native, Fred Falconer, owner of S.F. Falconer’s Florist. He is being honored for his extreme generosity to Pride in Port and many other local nonprofit organizations through donations of flowers and fundraising gifts. Fred Falconer, Jr. has lived in Port Washington his entire life, with the exception of his service in the U.S. Army, where he spent most of his time in active duty in Germany. He has raised his two children here, his son now in Huntington and his daughter in Texas. Falconer’s father, Fred Falconer, Sr., started the florist in 1924 in the same location where it is today at 8 South Maryland Ave. Falconer took over in 1980 when his father retired. The business has thrived well over the years by providing an outstanding product with superior, knowledgeable service. Although the business has always flourished with flora, Falconer continues to expand the offerings in the store to include a wide variety of gift items. “It is a great honor,” said Falconer, when asked how he felt about being named Grand Marshal. “I am a low key person, so my being selected took me by surprise.” Saturday, September 24 will be a very busy day in Port Washington from morning until late at night during the 28th Pride in Port celebration. For the week leading up to and including the Pride in Port celebration, Main Street will be renamed “Sal Zimbardi Way.” Sal, who passed away last year, devoted an extraordinary amount of time and energy to so many organizations and events, including Pride in Port. Fred Falconer was a close friend of Sal. So come out and join Fred Falconer on Saturday, Sept. 24, and show your Pride in Port.

Schreiber Athletics 2016 Hall Of Fame Inductees

Max Blank Class Of 1966

Max Blank is among the elite runners in Schreiber history. He was a four-year runner in cross country and a three-year runner on the indoor and outdoor track and field teams. He was stellar on the cross country trails. Max was named All County and All State as an individual in his senior year and was part of the All County and All State Team his junior year. Max’s specialty was the half mile. He ran 1:56 in the NYS Championships on a cinder track. He ran in the mile relay invitational at the Penn Relays, which placed third, and was the North Shore Champion in the half mile in his senior year. After fielding scholarship offers from Villanova and Georgetown, he chose Ball State University to run and pursue a teaching degree in physical education and biology. Max continued running in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. He would run anything from a quarter mile to three miles in competition. His team placed third in the NCAA Tournament. Max was given the Outstanding Athlete Award and Outstanding Physical Education Student Award in his senior year. Max gave back in the classroom with a 43-year teaching career as part of the Indiana school system. Max resides in Indiana with his wife, Barbara, and has three children. We welcome Max back home and congratulate him on his induction to the Schreiber High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

James Dalimonte, Jr. Class Of 1984

Jim Dalimonte, Jr., was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Schreiber. He was a varsity athlete in football, bowling and baseball. As an All Conference quarterback in football, Jim led the 5-2-1 Vikings to one of their most successful seasons ever. As a varsity bowler, he was a coaches’ award winner on a team that went to the NY State Championships. It was on the baseball field that Jim earned most of his accolades. He was the pitcher and second baseman on a very talented baseball team. In his junior year, he posted a team best E.R.A. of 2.25 In his senior year, he struck out 15 batters in a game on his way to becoming an Honorable Mention All County selection by the coaches in the county. Jim was the recipient of the Charles Hoines Award given to the team MVP. Jim went on to attend Widener University where he continued his baseball career. He was named outstanding freshman in the conference. Jim continues to give back to his community through his continued involvement in PYA. He served six years on the executive board, four years as secretary and two years as president. Jim is proud to be a lifelong member of Port Washington where he lives with his wife of 21 years, Mariann, and their three children, Lyndsay, James and Amanda. We congratulate Jim on his induction in the Schreiber High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Nathaniel Francis

Joseph Lynch

Nathaniel Francis was a two-sport standout athlete on the soccer and lacrosse fields. A leader on and off the field, he was a dynamic player of outstanding poise and skill. Nat was an All Conference and All County player in lacrosse. It was on the soccer field that Nat worked his magic as he led the Schreiber teams to huge success. He was named captain in his junior and senior years. In his senior year he was given All County, All State, All Region and All American honors. He was Port Washington’s best soccer player, as well as New York State’s, as he was named Gatorade State Player of the Year. Nat played collegiate soccer at Penn State University where the team was ranked #2 in the country his freshman year. He received his Bachelor’s degree in economics while being named to the Dean’s List his senior year. Nat is a case manager for Confidential Global Investigations (CGI). He lives in Maplewood, NJ, with his wife, Melissa, and 9-month-old son, Saxton. We congratulate Nat on the honor of his induction in the Schreiber High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Joseph Lynch was an outstanding diver who brought notoriety to the sport to Schreiber High School. Joe was involved in a sport where he needed to practice and compete away from Port Washington, since Schreiber did not have a pool, Joe would have to see practices out of town. In the summer months he would train in Phoenix with Hall of Fame and Olympic diving coach, Dick Smith. His practices were five days a week, 8 hours a day. During the winter months he would practice three times a week at the Flushing YMCA. The hard work paid off as Joe represented Schreiber in the Junior Olympics. He placed second in the 1-meter dive. He was a first-place finisher in the 1-meter dive in the Brooklyn HS Championships. Joe continued to compete in diving at SUNY Farmingdale where he earned All American honors in the 3-meter dive and was the New York State Champion in the 3-meter dive his sophomore year. Joe has three children, Joey, Brian, and Lauren, and lives in Port Washington with his wife, Terry. He considers this induction to be an honor and a privilege, and we congratulate Joe on his induction to the Schreiber Athletics Hall of Fame.

Aside from tasting delicious food from dozens of local restaurants, dancing and trying their luck with raffle prizes, attendees of the dance also know they are helping to raise money for scholarships and other awards. Each year, the Pride in Port scholarship committee selects graduating seniors who have demonstrated a high level of “pride in Port.” The two award categories are the Barbara Faticone Pride in Port Scholarship and Pride in Port Community Service Awards. The Barbara Faticone Pride in Port Scholarship is given to a Schreiber High School Senior who best demonstrates the qualities of the Pride in Port committee’s beloved co-chair, Barbara Faticone, a doer and a leader whose community involvement spans cultural, religious, social service, educational, athletic and health, in addition to commercial and civic pride organizations.

CSEA Selected As 2016 Pride In Port Community Honoree

CSEA, the Civil Service Employees Association, is the union that provides custodial, maintenance and transportation services to the entire Port Washington School District. Every year, many CSEA members have enthusiastically volunteered countless hours to help make Pride in Port so much more successful. Their members have consistently demonstrated exceptional devotion to our community and to the schoolchildren who benefit from the scholarships and awards.

The Pride in Port Committee nominated CSEA members as the 2016 Pride in Port Community Honorees for all of their volunteer work on behalf of Pride in Port and the entire community. These members truly embody the spirit of Pride in Port. CSEA is one of the largest, most influential labor unions in the United States. As New York’s leading union for the past 106 years, they represent 265,000 people who do every type of job in every part of the state.
