Jason Ham is among the top football players to ever play on the fields at Schreiber. He began his football career as a freshman on the junior varsity team as a running back and linebacker. He played the next three years on the varsity team and was named captain in his junior and senior years. In those three years, Ham was named All County. Ham’s senior year was a prolific one. He was named All County, All Long Island and was the MVP in the Long Island All-Star Game. His total of 4,081 yards was fourth all time in Nassau County and he still holds the record at Port. Ham was a Thorpe Award winner, the most prestigious award for Nassau County football. Ham went on to play collegiate football at the University of Rhode Island, where he was named captain his junior and senior years. He ran over 1,000 yards in his junior year. In his senior year, he earned URI’s Outstanding Back Award. He was also named All Atlantic 10. Ham annually participates in a 50-mile bike ride in the Pelotonia Fundraiser for Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Ohio. He lives in Forest Hills and is a copy editor for Victoria’s Secret Corporate.

Beth Kelly was a standout athlete at Schreiber in volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. Kelly was a leader in her sports at a time when athletics for females were on the rise. She was known for her incredible enthusiasm and team spirit, while being a force to be reckoned with on the courts and fields. Kelly was a captain of all three sports on the varsity level. On the volleyball court, she was an MVP in the Manhasset Tournament, an All Conference selection and a team MVP. On the basketball court, she was named to the All Conference team and was the team’s high scorer for the season in her junior year. In lacrosse, she helped Port to a runner-up finish in the Nassau County Tournament. Kelly was involved in the Girls Athletic Association (GAA), where she was a two-time high point winner, Sports Night (Go Blue!), GAA Banquet Awards Night and the Rocking Horse Ranch field trips. She was the recipient of the Joseph Augustino award for the most outstanding female athlete of the year. Kelly went on to SUNY Cortland where she started her collegiate volleyball career as the starting middle hitter as a freshman and played attack for the lacrosse team. She completed her college studies in business and marketing at NYIT and played volleyball, which brought her to Hawaii for tournaments. Most recently, Kelly was a district and regional manager for Macy’s in fine jewelry and watches. She was cited for numerous awards while in these positions. Kelly lives in Port Washington and has a home in Vermont. She loves spending time with family and friends from all over the country.

Todd Okun was an outstanding four-sport athlete at Schreiber. He played soccer, football, basketball and baseball and is noted for being a solid all-around player and an exceptional leader and teammate. On the soccer field, he was a starter as a sophomore and junior, where he was second in scoring, behind fellow Hall of Famer Wolfie Woischke. As a prolific scorer, he was counted on in all of the games. In his senior year, Okun switched to football, where he played linebacker. His highlight was intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown against Herricks. During the winter, Okun started all three years as a member of the basketball team. In his sophomore year, he helped guide the team to the league championship. He was named captain his senior year and averaged 16 points per game. In the spring, Okun played baseball, hitting over .300 in each of those years. He played at a time when there were no post-season awards as there are now, so being named Schreiber’s Best Male Athlete is a tribute to his overall excellence on the fields. A true scholar athlete, Okun graduated seventh in his class and applied to many prestigious colleges and universities. Upon graduation from Schreiber, Okun attended Harvard University graduating cum laude with a bachelor of arts in modern European history. He then went on to get a law degree from George Washington University and worked for four years in Washington, DC, before moving to Kansas and working in the legal department of the U.S. Central Credit Union. Okun went into private practice in 1998 at Okun Loritz, LLP, where he is the firm’s senior partner with expertise in all areas of credit union law. Okun lives with his wife, Cindy, in Montrose, CA.

Sarah Walsh Kenyon was one of Schreiber’s outstanding athletes. A three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and volleyball, she set the standard for excellence. Walsh Kenyon began her basketball career as an 8th-grade point guard and left her mark as the all-time scorer in Schreiber’s basketball history, male or female, with 1,362 points. She also holds Lady Vikings basketball assists records per game, season and career. She holds the record for steals in a career with 333. Walsh Kenyon was named All County and All State in basketball. Her success on the basketball court was equal to her success on the lacrosse field. Her talent helped keep Port girls lacrosse on the map. She was an Honorable Mention All American and was named to the All Long Island Team. After high school, Walsh Kenyon attended Johns Hopkins University, where she played collegiate lacrosse. She was named a team captain and went as far as the NCAA quarterfinals in her career. She finished her career at Hopkins sixth in goals scored, third in assists and fifth in overall points. After college, Walsh Kenyon started her business career working at Deutsche Bank in NYC, where she worked for six years in commodities sales before moving on to work at Noble Group in Stamford trading oil. One year ago, she married her best friend, John. They welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Anthony, on July 5. The family splits their time between New York City and East Hampton. It is Walsh Kenyon’s passion for sports and for her teammates that set her apart from so many and endeared her in the hearts of Port Washington athletics.

Pride In Port Dinner Dance To Honor Community-Minded Companies

At the Pride in Port dinner dance on Saturday, Sept. 19, two longtime, highly respected local companies and their management will be honored for their dedication to our community: Precision Work Inc. (Annette Oestreich) and Pierce Coach Line (Troy Pierce).

Precision Work Inc., Annette Oestreich Annette Oestreich was born and raised in Port Washington. She has spent her entire life in Port Washington and her 2015 Pride in Port Dinner love of the Community Honoree community Annette Oestreich of has been Precision Work Inc. reflected in her passionate engagement with local issues on a wide variety of subjects. She and her first husband started a small power-equipment business in Port Washington known as Precision Work. After he passed away, Annette continued to develop the business with her second husband, Robert Oestreich. As an entrepreneurial team, with Robert’s marketing talents and Annette’s financial and management experience, they turned Precision Work into an extremely successful business. Precision employs 18 people locally, distributes power equipment in nine Northeast states, from Pennsylvania to Maine and is currently the largest distributor of Walker mowers worldwide. Annette and her late husband, Robert, were a leading force in the fight against the construction of a mass-burn incinerator in the Sand Pits, getting behind the effort both with financial support and enormous amounts of personal effort. They went door to door to get petitions signed and had the courage to join in a lawsuit filed by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington against the Town of North Hempstead. When Annette moved to Sands Point in 1989, she quickly became involved in the community. She is an active member of the board of directors of the Property Owners Association of Harbor Acres and has been its treasurer for over 25 years. In

addition, she served for several years on the Residents Club Commission of the Village Club of Sands Point and was a founding member of the Astor Lane Residents Association. She is a board member of Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and is currently chairperson of the finance committee. She is also a member of many local organizations, including the Sons of Italy and the Chamber of Commerce. Annette has a daughter, Anita, a son-in-law, Jeff, and two grandsons, Jeffrey and Robert. Annette feels that Port Washington was a great place to grow up and she wants to help keep it that way. She consistently supports many local organizations to give back to the Port Washington community that has been so much a part of her life.

Pierce Coach Line, Troy Pierce Pierce Coach Line has cultivated deep roots within the Port Washington community. Operations Director Troy Pierce was born, raised and still resides in Port Washington,

as well as many of the company’s employees. Owner and president Larry Pierce lived in Baxter Estates with his wife 2015 Pride in Port Fran for 47 Dinner Dance Commuyears. The nity Honoree Troy Pierce company of Pierce Coach Line has a strong personal stake in the community. It is not just a business, it is a way of life. Pierce Coach Line, formed in 1940, is one of four incorporated strategic business units consolidated under the operations of its holding company, Pierce Recreation Inc. The Pierce family business enterprises share a common thread. They focus on serving the transportation, education and recreation needs of our community’s children. The Port Washington School District has enjoyed the consistency of having only two different school bus contractors of record during the past 61 years. From 1954 to 1997, Pierce Coach Line served as the longest contractor. Very few school districts on Long Island’s North Shore can boast a similar history of consistency and longevity.

Dejanas Pride In Port Grand Marshals The Pride in Port committee has announced that Peter and Jeri Dejana, of the Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, will lead off this year’s parade as the grand marshals. The foundation founders were chosen based on their strong support of so many in the Port Washington community. The Pride in Port parade is on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11:30 a.m. The Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation’s mission is to assist nonprofit organizations in their efforts to offer and expand programming and other services to their respective memberships. While the foundation’s giving is broad and diverse, focus is predominantly within Port Washington and surrounding communities. Keeping the foundation’s giving primarily local is directly related to Peter Dejana’s love for Port Washington, having spent his entire life here after emigrating from Italy when he was 14 years old. “Jeri and I were extremely touched and honored to have been chosen as this year’s Pride in Port grand marshals,” said Peter Dejana. “Having lived in Port Washington since emigrating

from Italy as a teenager, I feel so proud to be recognized during an event that embodies all the wonderful attributes of our community. ‘Pride in Port’ best says how I feel.” The foundation also provides additional support to its recipient organizations by helping to promote awareness of their organizations’ offerings. This serves to help organizations get the word out for greater independence and sustainability for the future. The Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation is committed to further enriching the Port Washington community. “Although a tremendous amount of hard work and ingenuity are the main reasons why Dejana Industries has enjoyed such great success over the years, I also feel truly blessed to have been so fortunate,” said Peter Dejana. “Fortunate for my success, but just as fortunate to live and work in and give back to the community I love so much. Although the Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation gives to organizations in surrounding communities as well as national charities, there are so many important charities right here in Port Washington. Why not give back in this terrific community that has meant so much to my family and me?” Peter Dejana continued, “Whether

we donate a few thousand dollars to help a small organization grow or provide substantial grant money that helps a well-established charity to dramatically extend its programming, every donation is important to us. That said, a recent pledge I feel particularly proud of is our commitment to providing funding over the next five years towards the Port Washington Public Library Children’s Library expansion. When I reviewed the architectural drawings and spoke with the planners, I was so impressed with the vision they have for our children and the beloved, life-enriching library space. At 2 p.m., there is a Schreiber High School varsity football game with a Hall of Fame Induction at halftime. Luncheon For Seniors At Schreiber Pride in Port’s Senior Citizen Luncheon will take place again this year at the Schreiber High School cafeteria on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon will be served by student volunteers from Schreiber High School. Activities will include a DJ and a dance performance. This free luncheon is sponsored by Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty and S.F. Falconer’s Florist. The Schreiber cafeteria is fully accessible from the entrance just north of the main entrance. Bus transportation is available to and from the luncheon. The bus will leave the Manorhaven Senior Center at 10:30 a.m., stop at the bus stop at Landmark on Main Street at 10:45 a.m. and arrive at the LIRR Station at 11 a.m., where there will be special seating for viewing the Pride in Port parade. When the parade ends, the bus will go to Schreiber cafeteria for the luncheon. After the luncheon, the bus will take the seniors back to the railroad, Landmark and the senior center.
