Halloween Party Brings Fun And Funding To Cancer Center The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital was a spooky place as Spirit Halloween, a specialty retailer, hosted a Halloween party for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Costumes, games and crafts were part of the magic to help children transcend above challenging situations for a day of scary fun. The “Spirit of Children” party was among nearly 100 Halloween parties hosted by Spirit Halloween at pediatric hospitals across the country. The Spirit of Children program also raises funds through customer donations at local stores and online, in addition to contributions from vendors and business partners. To date, the program has raised more than $510,000 for the Child Life program at the Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital. The program is dedicated to helping children understand and cope with the hospital experience including through therapeutic play, arts and crafts, entertainment and other diversions. “As our young patients face complex challenges, we strive to provide a nurturing environment that promotes healing,” said Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at NYU Winthrop and Director of the CCFK. “The Spirit of Children party helped serve that purpose, providing children a wonderful diversion from the rigors of medical treatments.”
Spirit Halloween store volunteers were on hand to stir up a stormy brew of amusing entertainment, which included a ring toss on to a large witch’s hat, pumpkin painting, mask decorating, picking out costumes to don, and much more. During the Halloween season in Spirit Halloween stores, customers ring an iconic purple cowbell each time a donation is made to Spirit of Children as part of its #MoreCowbell initiative. “We see first-hand how our parties create magic that transcends the kids’ difficult situations and provides a sense of normalcy as families navigate through challenging and heart-wrenching medical situations,” added Steven Silverstein, president and CEO of Spirit Halloween. “Every child should be able to experience the joy of Halloween.” The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital offers a range of early detection, diagnostic, intervention and treatment services, both inpatient and outpatient, for children’s cancers and blood disorders. Dramatic improvements have been made in pediatric cancer patient survival, with nearly 80 percent of children cured of their malignancies. Conditions treated at the Center include leukemia and lymphomas; bone, soft tissue and brain tumors; hemophilia; sickle cell disease and more. —Submitted by NYU Winthrop

Physical Therapy Or Prescription Medication For Pain Management? ith October recognized as National Physical Therapy month, I wanted to share some information on the U.S. opioid epidemic, and how you and your loved ones can avoid being part of this national crisis. In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued opioid prescription guidelines, recognizing that prescription opioids are appropriate in certain cases for pain management, but in other instances, recommends that patients choose physical therapy as an alternative to prescribed opioids. For example, the CDC supports exercise as part of a physical therapy treatment plan for pain or function problems, such as low back and hip pain, knee osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. I’ve had many patients arrive on their initial visit, frustrated and in pain, stating they’ve tried “everything” but still haven’t received any relief of their pain. After exploring their medical history, I often find that the attempts to relieve their pain, such as prescription medication, haven’t actually addressed the issue, but just reduced the symptoms without eliminating them. What many people don’t realize, is that physical therapy isn’t just for the rehabilitation of injuries. This specific therapy has long been a safe and effective way to treat and manage
pain. Take, for instance, lower back pain (LBP). Approximately 80 percent of individuals will experience LBP at some point in their life. LBP has been documented as one of the top reasons people take sick days from work. There are multiple treatments available for lower back pain, such as spinal manipulation, manual therapy and physical exercise—all of which can be addressed by a physical therapist. Why not consider that alternative option of care? Physical therapists don’t only address the pain. They work to ensure the patient restores or maintains their mobility, range of motion, strength and function, assisting to improve their overall quality of life. Opioids, on the other hand, do play a role in addressing pain, but come with associated risks. Before accepting prescription pain medication, the best course of action would be to review the side effects of all prescribed medication, the risks vs. rewards and if the condition will be resolved or just provide temporary relief. Take a few minutes to have the conversation with your doctor or a qualified medical professional, to ensure you are making the right choice for your health and well-being. Your body will thank you for it. John W. Nulty PT, DPT, MS, OCS, CSCS, is the clinical director and physical therapist at Professional Physical Therapy in West Islip.

The luncheon and fashion show supports critical women’s health programming at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and was presented by the Partners Council for Women’s Health. The event was cohosted by Rosanna Scotto, co-anchor of Fox 5’s Good Day New York, and Neil Tanna, MD, associate director of plastic surgery at Northwell Health. This year’s funds will also support the development of a new Women’s Imaging
Center at the Center for Advanced Medicine in New Hyde Park. “Our Imaging Center is going to be something so different and special, and our goal is not just to provide the most advanced imaging tests but also to have the best patient experience that anyone offers in our area,” said Nina Vincoff, MD, chief of breast imaging at Northwell Health. “Donor support is critical for us to be able to achieve our mission and it would not be possible for us to do the things we do every day for our community without the people who come out and support our events and support our health system.” To date, the Katz Institute Luncheon and Fashion show has raised more than $10.2 million in support of women’s health. Many children are scared about visiting the doctor. This feeling can be a challenge for parents, because children typically have at least 20 well-visits to the pediatrician by the time they are 10 years old, and most likely even more when including sick visits. The combination of being touched by someone who is not familiar to them, the fear of pain from either the shots or the exam and an unfamiliar environment can cause a fear of doctors. Here are some tips to help your child feel more comfortable at the next appointment:
Prepare Knowing what to expect can help decrease anxiety. Consider reading books such as Richard Scarry’s Nicky Goes to the Doctor, The Berenstain Bears Go to the Doctor, Dora Goes to the Doctor, and What to Expect When You Go to the Doctor by Heidi Murkoff. Role play to help your child understand what will happen, and by using a child’s reasons and language explain how the visit will be beneficial: “the shot will keep you
Fear Of The Doctor Stay close
PARENTING MATTERS Graziella Simonetti healthy so that you can keep playing and having fun.” When you practice in a safe and familiar place, it helps your child feel more comfortable in the unfamiliar location. Get a toy doctor kit and play with the different instruments.
Bring comfort Bringing something from home helps lower stress levels by providing comfort, security and familiarity in an unfamiliar environment. Some doctors will do a practice exam on the dolls or stuffed animals brought from home; that can reduce anxiety. Also consider bringing games or activities that will keep your child distracted while waiting.
To the child, the medical table and the chair the parent sits on can feel 100 miles away from each other. Having the child on your lap or next to you while you hold the hand can help him feel safe. The doctor can feel like a stranger and her touching your child can feel invasive and scary.
Coping strategies Teach your child ways to calm down, like taking deep breaths, focusing on objects in the room, closing the eyes and visualizing being somewhere else. You can also encourage your child to listen to music or a story through headphones. Sometimes, simply talking about what is scary can be helpful. Remind your child that he made it through the last visit and was fine afterwards.
Something pleasant to anticipate Set up a tradition of a special happening after each visit. Whether it is offering lots of praise and attention

or a special trip to the store to get a toy, provide a positive reinforcement at the end of the visit. This is not a reward for not crying or getting upset. It should not be tied to the behavior. It may simply be used as an incentive and as a tool to alleviate anxiety.
Conclusion Being nervous before a doctor’s appointment is typical. However, if you notice that your child is scared and talking about it weeks or months in advance, and that the fear distracts him from his everyday life, it might be worth considering consulting with a specialist. This may be a sign of deeper anxiety that needs attention. Graziella Simonetti is a parent educator for EAC Network’s Long Island Parenting Institute and works as an early childhood social worker for the New York City Department of Education. Grateful Mom Celebrates 40th Birthday Post Whipple Surgery Emma Barros, who originally hails from Ecuador and now resides in Brentwood, reached a milestone that she feared she’d never live to see—the celebration of her 40th birthday with her loving husband and daughter, and 10 of her closest family members. Joining in the family celebration at Long Island Jewish Medical Center was Gary Deutsch, MD, the innovative surgeon who realized that Barros was the perfect candidate for a complex surgery known as the Whipple procedure to cure pancreatic cancer. The challenge arose from Deutsch’s decision to utilize the da Vinci robot to remove a large tumor instead of going with traditional laparoscopic surgery. Earlier this year, Barros visited her doctor complaining of severe stomach pain that, she learned, was caused by gallstones. Even after having them removed surgically in March, the pain returned with new symptoms—Barros turned a yellow hue from jaundice and suffered terrible itching. “I didn’t want to believe anything was wrong. My husband told me I was
turning yellow and I didn’t want to believe,” said Barros. “I even asked my daughter and she told me it was true.” Barros returned to the emergency department at LIJ and learned that a gallstone was stuck in her bile duct, causing a blockage. Her doctors hoped to remove the gallstone endoscopically and to their surprise, Barros was found to have a large mass in the first part of the intestine. This
unexpected finding was biopsied and revealed that she had pancreatic cancer. At this point, Barros met Deutsch, a surgical oncologist who decided that the robotic Whipple procedure (named after the surgeon who pioneered its use) was a better way to go. “The reasons for using da Vinci were many,” said Deutsch. “By operating robotically, we have better
visualization with a high-definition 3D camera and more freedom of movement and dexterity. Also, such major abdominal surgeries traditionally resulted in longer incisions, more pain and scarring, and more recuperation time for the patient than da Vinci surgery. For Ms. Barros, we only needed to make five small incisions that are less than one centimeter in length. And, she was able to go home in four days.” On Sept. 21, Deutsch performed the complex, 10-hour surgery—also called a pancreaticoduodenectomy— which involved the removal of the right side of the pancreas gland along with some of the surrounding intestine and a portion of the bile duct. She was back at home in less than a week, and was finally able to look forward to her 40th birthday. Surrounded by her loving family and her surgeon, giant balloons and a birthday cake, Barros said simply, “It is such a blessing to be with my family today. This is a very special birthday.” —Submitted by Northwell Health

Federal Grant Supports New Sexual Assault Program T
he Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies has received a three-year, $754,000 federal grant to create a program to increase the number of nurses in New York trained and certified as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE). The new SANE program, the only university- and health system-based program in New York State, will train nurses in Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Of the 17 emergency departments (EDs) that Northwell Health operates throughout the New York metropolitan area, only four are designated as SANE Centers of Excellence by the Department of Health. Those sites— North Shore University Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital North, Lenox Health Greenwich Village (LHGV) and Peconic Bay Medical Center—have 24-hour coverage by nurses who provide confidential medical care to victims of rape and sexual assault, and coordinate follow-up treatment and emotional support. Amy Smith, a nurse practitioner at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills who started the SANE program at LHGV, has been designated as project coordinator for the new training program. The absence of SANE nurses at hospitals often re-victimizes those who have suffered a sexual assault by having them recount what happened to ED administrative personnel, and then again to a nurse, physician or other clinician. “People will show up to any hospital because they assume that when they see an `H,’ anything that they need can be taken care of at that facility,” explained Smith. “What happens is that the patient doesn’t get the care that they need because the staff doesn’t have all the special training that they need to deal with all the different facets of something that is not only a medical need but also a crime.” The grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration will enhance the existing academic-practice partnership between Hofstra University and Northwell Health, and include a
prior to entering the sensitive world of sexual assault.” The inaugural class of 25 SANE students is expected to begin in early 2019. Between January and June 2017, there were 1,240 sexual assault victims seen in emergency departments in localities served by Northwell Health. “Offering this type of specialized education at Hofstra University to our nurses, will give us the ability to grow the program with the goal of having SANE coverage throughout the Northwell community,” said Smith. —Submitted by Northwell Health Flushing resident Amy Smith, a nurse practitioner at LIJ Forest Hills who created a training program for forensic nurses at Lenox Hill Greenwich Village, has been tapped to be the project coordinator of the new program. collaboration with Hofstra’s Maurice A. Deane School of Law. “Participants in the program, who will be trained as forensic nurses, will be responsible for collecting evidence. They may be called to court to provide testimony, so the law school is going to be part of our curriculum and put the nurses through mock trials so they can be prepared for the pressure of what a defense attorney would put them through,” said Kathleen Gallo, PhD, MBA, RN, dean and professor of the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies and senior vice president of Northwell Health. Composed of 40 hours of classroom training and 300 hours of hands-on clinical training, the SANE program will also feature standardized patients who are individuals trained to represent real sexual assault victims, helping nurses practice diagnostic and communication skills. “These standardized patients help students learn how to perform a gynecologic exam and collect evidence on them personally,” said Gallo, who will be the primary investigator for the grant program. “Our students will be learning to provide compassionate care with standardized patients

Oralgen NuPearl 32X BY JENNIFER FAUCI jfauci@antonmediagroup.com
A happy and healthy smile is always in season and clean white teeth only enhance that. For an oral makeover at home, consider whitening your teeth with the Oralgen NuPearl 32X whitening kit. As someone who has whitened her teeth in the past using brand whitening strips and a variety of toothpastes (my teeth are fairly white to begin with, just need a boost of brightness now and then), Oralgen was a nice change of pace. Not only does it come with an easy to fill mouth tray, which features a comfort-flex material that won’t cut into your gums, the personal UV light was beyond cool. Plus, the Oralgen kit comes with a whitening pen for on the go application. Especially if you need a touch up before a big event, the pen is compact and can be tucked into a purse or coat pocket. The NuBright LED Technology has an advanced botanical whitening gel and natural peppermint essential oil, which allows for visibly whiter teeth in minutes. It is especially great for those who
have sensitivity issues, as enamel is better protected with gel than it is with adhesive strips. The kit comes with two syringes filled with gel that was sufficient for initial whitening. I kept the gel on for about 20 minutes, three times a week and noticed results after the first few days. A tooth indicator card determines a coloration comparison for those who need a visual aid to see the difference. While I still use gentle whitening toothpaste, I have definitely added Oralgen to my pearly white repertoire. Oralgen NuPearl 32X retails for $39.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond.

Get ready for the New You with a Mommy Makeover By Dr. Shain Cuber, New York Plastic Surgeon
Ah, the joys of motherhood— cuddles, baby giggles, and a whopping amount of unconditional love. Unfortunately, some of the other effects that comes along with our little bundles of joy can include sagging breasts, loose skin in the abdominal area, and extra “curves” in places we don’t want them. Many women, despite all efforts, struggle with breasts that have lost their shape and volume, loose, stretched skin, a protruding tummy or “pooch,” and fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise. Getting back to pre-baby body may be near impossible without a little surgical help.
Mommy Makeover targets trouble areas such as the breasts, tummy, hips, and fl anks. For these patients Dr. Shain Cuber performs a procedure often referred to as a Mommy Makeover that targets trouble areas such as the breasts, tummy, hips, and flanks. Dr. Cuber will often combine a breast augmentation (sometimes along with a breast lift) for fuller, perkier looking breasts, a mini-tummy tuck to remove excess skin and flatten and tighten the abdomen utilizing a short, hidden incision, and liposuction to contour the waistline area,
creating hourglass curves. His mini-tummy tuck procedure utilizes a much smaller incision than a traditional tummy tuck so that you can still wear your bikini. Shain Cuber, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast and body procedures. To learn more about the Mommy Makeover or to schedule your consultation with Dr. Cuber, please call our office at 516-472-7846, breastandbodyplasticsurgery. com.
