Art Contest For East Hills Anniversary BY JOE SCOTCHIE

The Village of East Hills is the most populous village in the Roslyn area. With the addition of the spectacular The Park At East Hills, the village’s stature, in recent years, has only grown. An 85th anniversary celebration may not be as dramatic as the coming—only 15 years from now— centennial, but it is a cause for celebration. So, on Saturday, Sept. 3, village officials will hold what they promise to be a “spectacular celebration” of the anniversary at, fittingly enough, that same park. As part of the festivities, residents of the village are

invited to submit their artwork for display. All artists must bring a stand or other method of display. Other specifications, village officials added, include the exhibit being limited to painting, photography, graphics, drawing, pottery and sculpture. Crafts are not included.

Artists must be current residents of East Hills. All ages are welcome to submit, as the display is divided between adult (18 and above) and youth exhibits. “Thanks to Natalie Mansbach, chair, and the enthusiastic, effective members of the 85th Anniversary Committee, we are planning a host of exciting

events, of which the art show will be an important part of the program,” said Mayor Michael R. Koblenz. “In retrospect, many dedicated members of our village, both past and present, have worked hard to make East Hills the wonderful community it is today. We are proud of the success we enjoy, the reputation we built and the extraordinary heritage we have created together.” To register, email ehartshow@ gmail.com. Roslyn author Stephanie Sorkin’s latest success is her children’s book, Frenemy Jane, The Sometimes Friend. The picture book, which addresses the problem of bullying, has been named as a Foreword Reviews’ 2015 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards winner, taking a bronze medal. “I’m honored to have my book named an INDIEFAB award winner,” Sorkin told The Roslyn News. “It’s a huge accomplishment to be among the finest talent in the indie book market. Knowing that my book will now reach a larger audience is very exciting. With a portion of my proceeds going to a bully prevention

campaign (www.pacer.org/bullying) it’s that much more rewarding, as the increased exposure will surely lead to more money raised for The Pacer Center.

“Frenemy Jane, The Sometimes Friend is a picture book, for ages 3 to 8, designed to help children navigate difficult social situations such as bullying,” Sorkin added, describing the book. “I’m not the first author to tackle this subject and I surely won’t be the last. What sets my book apart from other kid-lit bullying books is that rather than have a stereotypical ‘mean kid’ that we typically see on TV or in literature as a main character, I have an adorable little girl with pigtails and a pink dress that doesn’t look the part. “Furthermore, this character is sometimes nice, but not always,” Sorkin continued. “This is a very hard concept for children to grasp, as it’s a gray area when someone that you consider a friend isn’t treating

you properly. I coined the phrase ‘sometimes friend’ in hopes that children will now have a tool to describe such situations. During my school visits I use the classroom discussion

On Saturday, July 9, the freshly renovated Engineers Country Club hosted the first wedding in its new building. During the months of planning that went into the wedding, Engineers completed the renovation of its clubhouse and ballroom. During the renovation process, Engineers provided a team that worked tirelessly to produce an unforgettable day for the bride and groom, their families and their guests. After all, they were the first people to have the opportunity to inhabit and bring life to the space. With an enormous dance floor, the guests danced the night away. The attentive staff and excellent dining options rounded out the evening, treating every guest to an outstanding experience. The wedding ceremony and celebration were both hosted on the club grounds, with the service taking place outdoors on the beautiful Engineers

The bride was Bari Saffron, daughter of Jacki and Cliff Saffron, and the groom was Lex Prince, son of Lorri and Jack Prince. The two met at Syracuse University. Saffron is a teacher and Prince works at Balzona. The bride’s father, Cliff Saffron, is the president of the Engineers Country Club and is also a member of the Roslyn School Board. Saffron was delighted to reveal the expanded ballroom and clubhouse features to the more than 250 guests. As the renovation has recently been completed, Engineers Country Club has entered a busy season of outings, bar/bat mitzvahs and other events. Now in its 100th year, Engineers remains one of the more sought-after wedding and event locales on Long Island.

Sweet, Harwood Earn Scouting’s Highest Honor BY STEVEN CAHN

Coincidentally, both Sweet and Harwood have been admitted to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), a highly rated university for engineering and computer science. Troop 267 has been open to all boys (ages 10 to 18) in the Roslyn area since 1992. It is sponsored by Temple Beth Sholom on Roslyn Road, and meets every Tuesday except during school vacations and Jewish holidays. Mitchell Sweet and Zachary Harwood, two graduating seniors from Roslyn High School, recently earned their Eagle Scout award, scouting’s highest rank. Each boy sat for his board of review, a 90-minute question and answer session whereby select adult scouting leaders question Eagle Scout candidates on issues of achievement, leadership, scholarship, character, self-reliance and meaningful community service. Only four percent of all boys who become Scouts are ever awarded the Eagle medal. The rank of Eagle Scout, because of its rarity, still remains a distinguishing factor in college admissions and job applications as has been reported by candidates and institutions alike. The review was conducted by Don McMahon and Michael Natilli of the Shelter Rock District’s Eagle Board. They were joined by leaders from Roslyn’s Troop 267, who focused on the leadership, planning and implementation of each of the boys’ service projects. Sweet’s project involved over 20 people and took nearly 300 manhours to complete. The project involved the renovation of the courtyard at the Old Westbruy Hebrew Congregation, where his family members are congregants. The project included the installation and leveling of the pavers, the reconditioning of

Harwood’s project was of similar size and scope, involving the construction and installation of a media center at Congregation Tifereth Israel in Glen Cove, the synagogue at which the Harwoods are congregants. The project included designing and constructing the media center, reworking the electric in the foundation wall and painting the room upon completion. Scouting is a family affair with both families. Both of the boys’ fathers are also Eagle Scouts. Joshua, Harwood’s representatives of the 269 people, living in what is now East Hills, met in the home of Robert H. Willets, whose family lived in the area for eight generations. The Willets family then lived in the house where Stephen Taber, one of the significant figures in Roslyn’s early history, resided in 1839. The name “East Hills” was adopted at the suggestion of H. Stewart McKnight, who was the then-Nassau County attorney. And so, the Roslyn area’s newest village was born. Two weeks

later, Robert H. Willets was elected the village’s first mayor. John Mackay, Ellen A. Hennessy, Stephen Willets and Catherine Hechler were elected trustees. Charles Hechler, Mrs. Hechler’s husband, was designated village clerk. There is much to celebrate this Sept. 3. While Nassau County struggles with keeping young people on the island, East Hills, on the other hand, has enjoyed a resurgence. According to U.S. census numbers, there were all of 343 people living

in East Hills in 1940. That number skyrocketed to 2,547 during the ’40s and continued to boom throughout the ’50s and ’60s. After experiencing a decline in population in the ’80s and ’90s, the new millennium has been kinder to the village, thanks to the construction of the park and prudent fiscal policies. Since the year 2000, the village has recorded a steady growth in its population, one that has continued in the second decade of the 21st century.

Sorkin notes that most of the proceeds of her books are donated to organizations that help children around the world. And hopefully, this award will give her latest effort the audience it deserves.

Last month, the Roslyn-based The Buckley School celebrated its 89th annual commencement exercises. The ceremony opened with Rabbi Todd Chizner of Temple Judea giving an invocation in which he encouraged the graduates to think of “their special gifts as a source of inspiration, mostly for the purposes of enabling peace in our world.” Rabbi Chizner was welcomed to Buckley’s commencement exercises by Kenny Silver ’16, who studied with him for his bar mitzvah. President of the Board of Trustees Valerie DiFebo presented this year’s Trustee Bowl, the school’s most prized academic award, to the student who achieved the highest grade point average. The bowl this year was presented to Roslyn Harbor resident Ansh Amin. The Scholarship Medal for the second highest academic average was awarded to Jack Davis, while Bobby Mark earned honorable mention for the third highest average. On behalf of her classmates, Despina Tsiamtsiouris presented the Teacher of the Year Award, selected by the members of the graduating class, to fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Lynn Knox, whom she described as “a gracious and compassionate teacher who brightens her whole classroom.” The Thomas J. EDITORIAL Please Don’t Catch ‘Em All Murder. Robbery. Trespassing. Pedophiles. Spying. Infidelity. Identity theft. The wildly successful Pokémon franchise has been around for more than 20 years but, in less than two weeks, these are all things that have been associated with the latest location-based virtual-reality game, Pokémon Go. Businesses, museums, parks and virtually all places wanting to boost foot traffic are hopping on the bandwagon, advertising specials, incentives and discounts specifically for Pokémon hunters. I’ve even seen a university advertising use of the game as an incentive to get potential students to register for summer courses on their campus. My cousin, who lives in Missouri, relayed what appeared to be a zombie apocalypse in his downtown area yesterday. He watched dozens of

people holding their cell phones up to their faces and carelessly wandering through the neighborhood, which led me to think, I don’t want Poke-hunters wandering into my backyard. This has already become a problem, with reports of widespread trespassing and people putting themselves into dangerous situations to capture one of these virtual Pokémon monsters. I don’t know if this is true, but I read that the Army is developing a plan to use the application to teach soldiers how to track and navigate. Seriously? I cannot relate. That to me, as an old-school veteran, is millennial thinking and a ridiculous skill in a soldier’s war-training toolbox. I’ve heard some parents and some experts cite exercise as the reason for playing the game. It’s not just for kids. One friend told me that she logged five miles on her pedometer while tracking

Some socially responsible groups are using it to their advantage, pitching: “Hey, while you’re out there walking around, take a bag with you and pick up some garbage”—and other creative ways to get practical things

accomplished—getting transients to pull double duty. Niantic, the game developer, has also confirmed that it has access to the gamer’s Google account through the app usage, including emails, personal information, etc., but that it doesn’t plan to actually use any of it. If you believe that, I’d like to further my case for natural selection. —Christy Hinko

An Introduction And A Thank You BY ALLISON BROWN

On June 29, I had the great honor of being welcomed as Superintendent of Schools at a special ceremony hosted by our outgoing Interim Superintendent Gerard Dempsey. Many members of the district’s faculty and staff, parents and students were on hand at Roslyn High School as Dempsey graciously passed the baton to me as the district’s new leader. During my eight years in Roslyn— first as principal of East Hills School, then in Central Administration—I

have been very fortunate to have been surrounded by many wonderful and supportive colleagues: custodians, bus drivers, food service workers, secretaries, teacher assistants, teachers and administrators. These educators do the most important work in the world: teaching and taking care of our children. In addition, I’ve had the pleasure of working with parents, without whose tremendous support our schools and our students just could not be as successful as they are. I thank the Board of Education for having so much confidence in me and in our district staff. Just as the board trustees have been a source of strength and stability for the school community as a whole, I am certain that they will continue to be a source of wisdom and experience as we move forward on this journey together. As we turn to the future, I am very pleased to be working with

an exceptional group of educators. This summer, we welcome some new members to our administrative team. Rebecca Gottesman is the district’s new director of Guidance. She comes to Roslyn with a wealth of experience as a guidance director in other districts in our area. Mike Brostowski joined us a few months ago as our new director of Athletics and Physical Education, and is set to begin his first full school year in Roslyn. Jennifer Sheehan, a highly respected and experienced member of the World Languages faculty, will become the new department chairperson, as Karina Baez has now assumed the role of assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. And a search is currently in progress for a new, dynamic leader for Harbor Hill School. In Central Administration, Baez will form part of a team with Assistant Superintendent Michael Goldspiel, who joined the district a year ago. Baez’s focus will be on elementary

education, while Goldspiel will be responsible for secondary education. They will also share responsibilities for human resources for our certified faculty members. Along with Joseph Dragone, our veteran assistant superintendent for Business, they make a formidable team. I have total confidence in them and in all of our administrative staff, who are more than ready to meet any challenge and to forge ahead with new ideas. Finally, I want to thank the board and the entire school community for granting me the extraordinary opportunity to be your superintendent of schools. It is a truly humbling experience. I would like all of our staff, parents and the entire community to know that you will always have my respect, my faith and my support as we stand together to face the very important tasks ahead. My only ambition is to do Roslyn proud, and to repay the trust that you have placed in me.

Cirque du Soleil Soars With Paramour BY BETSY ABRAHAM

The circus has come to Broadway. Cirque du Soleil—known for its touring shows that combine circus arts and street performance—debut Paramour, its first Broadway show back in April, bringing high-caliber theatrics and aerobatics to the Lyric Theatre. Paramour follows the story of Indigo (Ruby Lewis), a scarlet-haired singer who is discovered by AJ Golden (Jeremy Kushnier), a powerful movie director looking for his next star. With her earnest, doe-eyed composer, Joey (Ryan Vona) in tow, the pair head off to Hollywood as Golden promises Indigo fame and fortune while Joey tries to write the perfect love song. A love triangle predictably develops, which may be an overdone plotline but lends itself beautifully to scenes like “The Dream” and “Indigo’s Decision,” where Cirque performers capture the complicated emotions of jealousy and love through acrobatics. What the show lacks in storyline, it makes up fully in jaw-dropping theatrics. There is no lack of amusements with Paramour, as the show packs in flips, acrobatics, trapeze and juggling routines that will leave the audience breathless. The world-renowned Atherton brothers—aerial strap artists who dangle dozens of feet in the air holding onto nothing more than long straps—are one of the show’s best acts, as are acrobats Martin Charrat, Myriam Deraiche and Samuel William Charlton who dangle and flip upside down from a trapeze with complete control. Brilliant choreography and strong vocals shine throughout and the show marries well the mixture of Broadway theatrics with circus stunts. While the acrobatics take center stage, performances by Lewis, who makes a memorable debut, and the rest of the cast, help the whole show come together well. Residing at a stylistic crossroads that’s found them influencing legions of bands in the worlds of pop, hard rock, new wave, heavy metal and punk, Cheap Trick has kept the flame burning bright for American rock and roll for the past four plus decades. This year not only found the foursome of Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos rightfully and finally getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the the three members minus Carlos (Nielsen’s son plays drums in Carlos’ stead) released Bang, Zoom, Crazy... Hello, the band’s first studio record in five years and one that has many calling it their best. The following are some other notable parts of the band’s canon you should check out. Cheap Trick (Epic) [1977] - A power pop masterpiece, the combination of killer guitar riffs and stacked harmonies initially went overlooked by American audiences despite the band’s ability to clothe bizarre topics

like suicide (“Oh, Candy”), mass murder (“The Ballad of TV Violence”) and pedophiles (“Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School”) in killer arrangements. In Color (Epic) [1977] More pop manna can be found on Cheap Trick’s sophomore bow including the Beach Boys-inspired “Southern Girls,” the manic album opener “Hello There” and the frenetic studio version of “I Want You to Want Me.” Heaven Tonight (Epic) [1978] - Despite having a slightly slicker production sheen, this collection of songs contains plenty of classics including a sneering song about suicide (“Auf Wiedersehen”), the evils of drugs (the psychedelic title cut) and a killer Move cover (“California Man”). captured a rabid Japanese fanbase’s ardor and carryied it back to Cheap Trick’s home country thanks to stellar live readings of “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender” and a hit cover of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That a Shame.” Dream Police (Epic) [1979] - Fresh off of Budokan’s success, Cheap Trick’s fourth studio album was their most successful commercial outing thanks to the bombastic and ubercatchy title cut, stomping “Gonna Raise Hell” and the yearning “Need Your Love.” Next Position Please (Epic) [1983] - This Todd Rundgren-produced outing is a return to pure pop with a dash of new wave thanks to the harmony-soaked Zander gem “I Can’t Take It,” an earnest reading of The Motors’

With Clean Pass, her daily rides from Melville to East Williston and back have been reduced by about 25 minutes each way, which has not only decreased her stress, but has also saved her money on gas and allowed her to sleep later. Of the approximately 80,000 vehicles that qualify for the program, about 30,000 have Clean Pass stickers, and that number is continuing to increase, said NYSDOT Spokesperson Carol Breen. For this reason, concerns have risen about whether or not it will cause traffic in the HOV lane, but Breen assures that the program is undergoing further study in order to “ensure that the HOV lane is operating as intended, while still promoting the use of fuel-efficient vehicles.” Thus far, she added, the program has been successful, and will continue to be modified and improved according

Long Island Expressway commuters with energy-efficient vehicles are receiving several perks for helping the earth, as they save time, money and gas, and no longer have to experience the hassle of being stuck in traffic. New York’s Clean Pass Program, which was initiated in 2006, is a plan of action intended to foster the usage of more eco-friendly vehicles in order to reduce negative impacts on the environment. The program allows drivers with eligible vehicles to drive in the Long Island Expressway’s HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes without any passengers; the lanes previously permitted buses, motorcycles, and vehicles with two or more occupants only during rush hours—6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Though the lanes are open to other vehicles outside of peak times, being able to use it during these heavy-traffic hours gives hybrid car drivers the advantage of a faster, less-stressful commute. To use the Clean Pass Program, vehicle owners—whose cars must receive an average of 45 miles per gallon or better and meet certain emissions standards—can apply through the State Department of Motor Vehicles and will receive four stickers upon approval, according to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). The stickers are free of charge; applicants simply must call or apply online. Audra Beberman, a Prius-lessee and Clean Pass user from Suffolk County, said the program significantly decreased the time of her commute to and from work. “I kind of expected it to be quicker, but I didn’t realize how much time I would save. [Prior to using Clean Pass] I would sit in traffic for almost an hour, for what should have been a 20-minute commute,” she said.

It was a beautiful day as we drove north on the 101 freeway towards Santa Barbara. The rugged sandy bluffs rose high along the California coast while the sunshine sparkled across the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Thing 1 and Thing 2, then 8 and 5, were trying to sit patiently in the back seat as we drove towards our campground. This was our first outing in our new-to-us, folding camping trailer. To say my heart was happy would be an understatement. I was giddy with excitement. I couldn’t wait to start making fun, family camping memories. Brent and I already had so many from when we were kids, and we wanted to give the same thing to our boys. Not only that, we were ready to relax for the weekend after a long week of work. We were ready to kick up our heels, sit by the fire, and maybe go on a few hikes in the Los Padres National Forest. An hour later we arrived at our campsite, and the boys jumped out of the van. They were busy checking out the campsite when I noticed Thing 2 wasn’t wearing shoes. “Put on your shoes, honey. There might be something sharp.” “I don’t have them,” he replied, playing in the dirt. What? No shoes? Of course, he has shoes. What sort of parent forgets shoes when they go camping? I started searching the van but no luck. In our excitement to hit the road for our first camping experience, we had let him run out the door happy but barefoot. Ooops. Determined not to let this ruin our weekend, we headed up to the camp store. There we bought a pair of flip-flops that he could wear to protect his feet. We may not be going on any long hikes over the weekend, but they would be perfect to wear to the swimming hole on the Santa Ynez River. Wondering if there are things to do (besides remember your child’s shoes.) to make your first time out in your new RV go more smoothly? Read on.

Making a list is probably your most important step. Make copies and give them to all your readers in the family so they can help pack up. Divide your lists into categories: kitchen, meals, bathroom, outdoor activities (bikes, balls, firewood, etc.), indoor activites (games, movies, etc.), pets, family member A, B, C, etc., and don’t forget to include yourself. Start packing a few days ahead of time to avoid the last minute rush. Cross things off as you pack them and just before you pull out of your driveway, take a quick glance at your list to make sure you have everything.

Practice Parking or Driving If you are worried about backing up or driving the RV around, take it out for some practice without the family. It’s a lot easier to practice without kids playing (or arguing) in the back seat. Choose a Saturday or Sunday morning when the roads are less crowded, and drive around a bit. Find a large parking lot with plenty of empty space and back it up a few times. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it gets with a little practice. It won’t be long until you feel like a pro.

Research Test Run Most RVs are so easy to set up you could do it in your sleep, but it doesn’t hurt to do a little test run. Set up your RV in your driveway before you head out. In fact, you may want to do this a few times if you are feeling nervous. Better to figure out how to work the jacks before getting to a campsite after a long drive when you (and everyone else) may be tired. If your RV has slides, always do a slide check when setting or packing up to make sure nothing gets smashed in the slide. Trust us on this one.

A little research ahead of time goes a long way. We are all for spontaneity, but for your first trip in your RV I suggest you have reservations. Double-check that the campground has the amenities you want. If you want electricity, water and sewer, be sure to ask for a full hookup site. You can even ask for a pullthrough site if you are not quite ready for a back-in site. While you are on the Internet, do a quick search for things to do in the area and take a few notes (I take screenshots on my phone and save them to my camera roll). This way if you get to your destination and suddenly realize you don’t have cell phone reception, you’ll still have an idea of what’s in the area. Also don’t forget to double-check your route on the GPS before pulling out of the driveway.

After reminiscing about his years at Buckley with the same wit and verve for which he is often remembered, Gage focused his remarks on friendship and told a personal story about a classmate whom he now considers one of his greatest friends. “Do what it takes not to drift out of touch—don’t wait,” he urged the graduates, because “there’s something wonderful about a friend whom you grew up with, and that’s worth holding on to.” The two student speakers selected by their peers were Portia Inzone and Jack Davis, who used the clever metaphor of the human body to highlight the part that each graduate contributed to their common experience “going through many transformations and rebirths; happy, sad and everything in between, on our hero’s journey.” Diplomas were then awarded to the members of the graduating class. Upon hearing their names, the students handed their plaques to the newly elected student council co presidents—Isabella Marrale ’17 and Max Brown ’17, and walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. The 2016 graduates have now become the newest members of Buckley’s Alumni Association, and there is hope that under the leadership of their class agent, Maya Neckles, Buckley will soon have the pleasure of their visit. Designed to raise awareness about skin cancer, the Skin-telligence program will be returning again this year thanks to Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign (CCMAC). “As more people head outside to enjoy the summer weather, it’s important that they know how dangerous the sun’s rays can be to their skin and how to best protect themselves from developing skin cancer,” said Schimel. “The CCMAC has once again generously agreed to partner with us to help spread the word about this summer danger.” According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, accounting for roughly half of all cases diagnosed in the United States. A pale complexion, family history of skin cancer, severe sunburns or exposure to carcinogens can increase a person’s likelihood for developing skin cancer, but virtually everyone is at risk. “In 1998, our daughter was diagnosed at 29 and passed five and a half months later,” said Colette Coyne, cofounder and executive director at CCMAC. “Statistics indicated at that time that one in 75 would be diagnosed in their lifetime.

Today, the American Cancer Society tells us one in 50 will experience this disease, which if not caught early is deadly. Assemblywoman Schimel is among the few who recognizes the importance of our message of prevention.” Skin-telligence will be held at several public pools across the area, where attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly to Schimel and her staff at the following locations:
