Welcome to Roslyn Magazine Anton Media Group has taken great pride in covering this unique community through our weekly newspaper, The Roslyn News, which was founded back in 1877—and now through our website, www.roslyn-news.com, as well. With the inaugural launch of Roslyn Magazine, we’re looking to feature even more wonderful aspects about this storied town with a heritage that has always been something residents have taken pride in. History is a given when you speak about Roslyn. Mara Bollettieri writes about the homes erected by famed developer William Levitt in the Roslyn Country Club section that are disappearing under the wrecking ball. Equally impressive is Juliet Freudman’s profile of Irving Roth, a Holocaust survivor who travels the world to tell his story so that no one ever forgets. Roslyn today is highlighted with Alexandra Civorelli’s overview of fantastic restaurants including Besito, Bryant & Cooper, MP Taverna and Hendrick’s Tavern as well as Juliet’s story about the wealth of programs offered by the JCC that cater to age groups ranging from infants to senior citizens. Longtime Roslyn News Editor Joe Scotchie digs deep into the well of talent that’s emerged from Roslyn by writing profiles on famous names from the worlds of literature (best-selling author Michael Crichton, Nobel Prize winner Gabriela Mistral), music (lyricist Hal David), politics (William Cullen Bryant, Congressman Ken Hechler) and sports writing (Stan Isaacs, Gerald Eskenazi, Allison Danzig). Joe contributes another piece focusing on homegrown star athletes including Hall of Fame high school basketball coach Joe Lettera, cross-country track runner Emily Lipari, top scorer George Beamon and current Bulldogs gridiron signal-caller Adam Combs. Joe also has a story about the historic Ellen E. Ward Clock Tower, a Roslyn landmark that I was involved with helping restore back in 2006, when a time capsule containing 65 items was placed inside—one of which was a copy of The Roslyn News. evitt. Almost everyone on Long Island recognizes the name. Even those who weren’t yet born during the time that the real estate development company Levitt & Sons and William Levitt were around have heard or read of them. Levitt houses line many streets throughout Long Island. Heck, you may even live in one. William Levitt left a huge impact both on the Island and the nation. In fact, nearby Levittown, for which he is most renowned, was named after him. The real estate company, originally founded by William’s father, Abraham Levitt, revolutionized the home-building industry by mass producing neighborhoods and creating huge suburban communities after World War II. These homes were mostly for returning veterans and for those who wanted affordable housing. In the late 1940s, Levitt developed a section of Roslyn Heights near the Roslyn Country Club, and so the area was named after the club. Levitt’s legacy still lives; however, the case is not entirely the same in Roslyn Heights. With time comes change; as Bob Dylan eloquently put it in 1964, “For the times they are a-changin’.” And a-changin’ they are indeed. A majority of the Levitt houses in this community are being knocked down and rebuilt into colossal homes. The essence of the community and its history just may be extinct. Doris Jacoby is an original homeowner of a Levitt house in the Roslyn Country Club. She, her husband and their few-months-old baby had lived in Brooklyn, but they wanted to relocate to the North Shore. One day, she and her husband were out on the Island, driving on the Northern State Parkway, and decided to get off on

Roslyn Road, a stop further than their usual exit. They discovered people waiting on a line, but didn’t know what the line was for. She later exclaimed, “Lo and behold, people [were] waiting to get into a model house.” She says they stood on line and when they finally met with the salesman, there were only two houses left out of 600. The salesman told them that one was a ranch-style house all on one level and the other model had a higher roof, which would have enough attic space to add rooms if they so pleased. They liked the ranch-style house, but the salesman convinced them to buy the one with the extra attic space. Jacoby and her family moved into the home in 1950, and she’s remained there for 66 years. According to Jacoby, Levitt built at least three different models. She says that every house had “a big evergreen on the lawn, a maple tree, shrubbery...that was his trademark. His father used to drive around the neighborhood and call out of his car, reminding people to water.” “When you moved into the house [it had] a dishwasher, refrigerator and

washing machine...but Levitt didn’t supply a dryer,” she continues. “Ours was out in the garage, some people kept it there. Many years later we did some changes and moved the kitchen from the front of the house to the back.” She says, “Levitt painted each house a different color. Some had a main entrance on the side or in the front. Some were low houses, some had attics. These houses were considered very modern like Frank Lloyd Wright’s.” Jacoby says these were open-plan houses. For instance, the living room could be made into a dining area. She shared a memory of her mother coming to visit: “I remember my mother’s comment...she didn’t mean it negatively. She said, ‘It is like one big room.’ Levitt was very ahead of himself...the new look...[it was] open space...not like a traditional house. “[It was] probably the best investment we ever made,” she adds. “We were so close to the train that the kids could wave to the engineer from the playground across the street from my house.” The neighborhood, which was comprised of young couples just like her and her husband, “turned out to be a wonderful street, [with] wonderful neighbors.”

Jacoby says that the community had a civic association, which gathered at the country club. Club membership was exclusive to the community, with an annual membership cost of just $100. “We had meetings and dances and kids had Halloween parties. We had this wonderful swimming pool. I would meet other people from the other sections...you met your neighbors literally from the other side of the road. The kids met others from the area.” The clubhouse is now used for catering, but the pool and tennis courts have been shut down for years. With help from the Town of North Hempstead, the facilities should reopen in 2017. According to Jacoby, these days neighbors don’t visit with each other anymore. “They’re all busy with their own lives,” she says.”It’s equally my fault, too. Things are different today, we hardly know our neighbors, we just wave as they go by. “It’s not a neighborhood anymore,” she continues, “you know…nobody is outside. The kids don’t go out to play now, they sit in front of their computers and they talk with their friends that way...back then it was more social. [We] had block parties, we had a May Day Parade...everyone was involved. [There were] picnics outdoors... barbecues. The people next door to

me way back, they were organizers of things. All you need is one person to get things moving.” If this neighborhood sounds like a scene from The Wonder Years, the hit TV show from the ’80s and ’90s that recalled growing up in suburbia in the late ’60s and early ’70s, that’s because early co-executive producer Bob Stevens and writer Winnie Holzman actually grew up in the neighborhood. It’s rumored that Shepherd’s Park was based on the playground across from Jacoby’s house. Today, the taxes on these homes are essentially double the original cost of the Levitt house. “The [price] range when we moved in was from $17,500 to the ones that were expensive [because they] had an expansive attic, and that was probably $20,000 to $21,000,” Jacoby says. “The one behind me is a new one, I think it’s sold. Some of these houses cost $2 million.” Not only have the sizes and prices of the houses changed, but so has the tight-knit community. Jacoby laments, “The young people who grew up here come back...they tell their children it was great growing up here and you know...the kids want to see where their parents grew up, and the sad part is they come back and their house isn’t here anymore. In other words, you can’t come home again. There’s no history anymore. It’s just our memories.”

ore than 20 years ago, the biggest development issue in Roslyn was the proposed construction of a Stop & Shop center. Proponents referred to downtown Roslyn as a ghost area with only a bakerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dozen of remaining shops. Commercial development, planned for the 11 acres off of Skillman Street, would rectify the situation. It seemed so compelling that even Roger Gerry, a board of trustees member and the founder of the preservation movement in Roslyn, supported the center. But opposition arose. The Stop & Shop was scheduled to be open 24 hours a day and that proved to be a main point of contention. The plan was defeated and a new board of trustees was voted in. As important, the new board drafted and approved a master plan for the village with an emphasis on residential development for those empty spaces in downtown Roslyn. Years later, things have a way of coming together. Stop & Shop was quietly returned to Roslyn, opening a grocery store at Wheatley Plaza, one that just stays open until 11 p.m. Meanwhile, residential development continues apace. About a decade ago, Atria of Roslyn Harbor, a senior residential housing complex, was opened. Gaining in popularity, Atria is the sight for many cultural events and plenty of programs for its senior-citizen residents. Complementing Atria will be the new, upscale development on the water, Roslyn Landing.

A big news story in 2015 was the announcement that The Ranches, a North Shore home builder, will, in partnership with the private equity firm G4 Capital Partners, begin taking sales offers for Roslyn Landing, a collection of luxury townhome condominiums in downtown Roslyn. In all, Roslyn Landing hopes to offer 78 condos, including two- to three-story townhouses, flat-over-flat condominiums and single-family detached homes. The luxurious two- and mostly three-bedroom units will have three or three-and-a-half baths in approximately 3,000 square feet of space and will each cost in the neighborhood of $1.5 million.

The complex will be situated off Skillman Street between Old Northern Boulevard and the promenade overlooking Hempstead Harbor. Roslyn Landingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s indoor amenities will include a clubhouse, complete with a billiards table, bar, catering kitchen, dining area and space for lounging. Plus, a fully equipped fitness center, childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playroom and golf simulator will also be available. Mobile on-site security, outdoor landscaping as well as snow and refuse removal will be provided for the residents, too. Construction of Phase 1 condo buildings, comprising 28 homes, is scheduled for this spring. According to officials, occupancy

of Phase 1 condos is expected this winter. Next spring, construction of an additional 50 homes is anticipated during the building of the Phase 2 condo buildings. Roslyn Landing represents the second big residential development in the village since the master plan took effect. Residents will be able to experience the best of both worlds—the convenience of walking to Gerry Park, the movies and some of the best restaurants around—while savoring the comfort of a modern, suburban-size home in a country club setting. Many people hope to leave their mark on the world, but most people’s legacy is not as permanent as a tattoo By Juliet Freudman

rving Roth’s legacy has been tattooed on others…literally. It began several months ago when Roth was scheduled to speak for Christians United for Israel (CUFI) in Phoenix. CUFI Western Regional Coordinator Randy Neal greeted Roth at the airport to drive him to his hotel. It seemed like any other trip for Roth. Born on Sept. 2, 1929, in Kosice, Czechoslovakia, Roth lived a happy childhood, going to school, playing with friends, enjoying soccer. As Hitler rose to power and World War II broke out, Roth’s life changed dramatically. His family moved to Hungary, but the situation only worsened. While Roth survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, he lost his brother, grandparents and other relatives. After the liberation, Roth returned to his hometown in Czechoslovakia and found his parents, who survived being hidden by righteous gentiles, waiting for him. In 1947, Roth and his parents moved to Brooklyn, where Roth completed high school and eventually earned a degree in electrical engineering. Since retiring, Roth travels every two or three weeks to speak about his experience in the Holocaust and teach others the lessons of history. CUFI is an organization for which Roth speaks often, and after staffing an organized group trip to Poland together in 2009, Roth and the Christian leader Neal had become close friends. Neal was so moved by Roth’s story and the way he conveyed it that he asked Roth to speak at CUFI events. And so, after six years of partnering with CUFI, Roth had no reason to think this day in Phoenix would have been unlike any other, until Neal asked him a question that he had never expected to hear. “We were in the car coming from the airport and going to the hotel, and he said to me, ‘Irving, I have a question. I would like to have your number tattooed on my arm. Exactly the same number. Exactly the same place. Would you object?’” Roth recalls. “That afternoon, we went to a tattoo parlor.” While this may seem impulsive, it’s the farthest thing from it. “This is done with great reverence, not “There are four people in this world who have this number,” says Irving Roth.

something to take lightly,” Neal explains over the phone, emotion rising in his voice. “His story would not be forgotten on my watch.” Neal has thus become the “surrogate survivor” of Roth, the A-10491 tattoo serving as a physical manifestation of the immense impact Roth has had on this man’s life. Roth began a program called Adopt a Survivor in 1998, after participating in March of the Living with high school students. Through the Adopt a Survivor program, students are partnered with Holocaust survivors whose stories they learn and can carry on after the survivor passes away. This program was inspired by the idea that understanding a person’s experience in the Holocaust is more than facts and figures. Returning to Auschwitz in 1998 with the March of the Living trip, Roth realized that he didn’t want the students to think of his grandfather as an “image of a corpse turning green from Zyclone B gas” but as a human being, devoted to his family, his faith and his morals. By adopting a survivor, younger people can become what Roth calls “surrogate survivors” so that the stories can live on even when the survivors don’t. In this sense, Neal really is a surrogate survivor. “It was a very moving experience,” Neal says. It even brought the tattoo artist to tears, evoking memories of his own grandfather’s tales from World War II. A few months after this incredible day in Phoenix, Roth was sitting in his office at Temple Judea of Manhasset when he received a call from Neal. He was in Portland on a CUFI

tour of the northwest and on the phone with him were Pastor Aaron Taylor and a former radicalized Muslim, who wished to remain unnamed. They’d seen Neal’s tattoo and wanted Roth’s permission and blessing to do the same. Roth approved. “There are four people in this world who have this number,” Roth says. One Jewish Holocaust survivor, two Christians and a former radicalized Muslim. “We’re doing this for the day when our grandkids ask, ‘What does that mean?,’” Neal says. “We’re not trying to start a trend; there is a deep sense of commitment. If there is ever a day when bad people want to know where we stand with the Jewish people, we just wear a T-shirt.” Neal explains that these three men aren’t trying to spread a fad; these tattoos hold great significance for them and they don’t want to belittle it by drawing attention to it. Yet the story is so inspirational and compelling that it may very well take on a life of its own, and others may soon follow suit. Still, Roth’s legacy transcends far beyond these physical manifestations to all of the minds he reaches through his professional speaking and work at the Holocaust Center of Temple Judea of Manhasset. When Roth arrived in the United States in 1947, he was ready to speak about his experience in the Holocaust, but he found that people weren’t interested in listening. His uncle, who Roth remembers fondly as a wonderful man, had been living in Brooklyn during the war and held a stubborn stance, often saying, “What happened in Europe was evil. Let it sink into the Atlantic Ocean. This is a new life.” Even at Midwood, where Roth attended high school in Brooklyn, when the student newspaper featured him, the editor focused

mainly on the sheepskin coat that Roth was forbidden to wear after a 1939 law in Czechoslovakia prohibited Jews from wearing luxury items rather than on the experiences of the Holocaust. “What’s very fascinating is what stuck in the editor’s mind, the fact that I had to give up my sheepskin jacket because I was a Jew,” Roth says. “Because the idea that six million Jews were murdered didn’t really penetrate. He couldn’t relate to it.” When his two sons were growing up, they began asking their father questions, wondering why he had a number tattooed on his arm. Little by little, Roth recounted the story to his children—the memories of his childhood, getting kicked out of school for being a Jew, his father losing his business,

the concentration camps and losing his brother. With four grandchildren and a great-grandchild, Roth continues to share his story with them. It wasn’t until Roth retired from a 40-year engineering career that he began professionally speaking about his story. Now, Roth speaks to thousands of people each year, with audiences ranging from children to adults and includes Jews as well as people who had never even heard of the word Holocaust. He wrote his memoir, Bondi’s Brother, helped edit Adopt a Survivor: An Antidote to Holocaust Amnesia and is currently working on a third book about an alternative approach to teaching Torah that better relates to youth. Executive Director of the Holocaust Center at Temple Judea of Manhasset since 1998, Roth has brought survivors, speakers, concerts and artwork to the Holocaust center, which is the only one of its kind built by a single synagogue in the United States. Roth has received numerous awards including the Spirit of Anne Frank Outstanding Citizen Award, as well as city keys to Lake Charles, LA, and Findlay, OH. When Roth speaks about the Holocaust, he doesn’t simply share his story; he works to relate the events of 70 years ago to today’s world, “so that the Holocaust becomes not an abstraction but an event that happened to a real person to whom they can relate,” he says. “And people haven’t changed really. Jealousy, love, hatred, relationships still exist. Technology has changed, but we as humans…not really.”

William Cullen Bryant At the top of the fame list is usually William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878). From the late 19th century onward, Roslyn residents have made significant contributions to American culture in politics, literature, music, journalism and entertainment.

Christopher Morley Into the 20th century came the prolific career of Christopher Morley (1890– 1957). A popular newspaper columnist, Morley was the author of numerous books, including the best-selling Kitty Boyle. Morley is buried in the Roslyn Cemetery and his house, the Knothole, remains open to the public at the Roslyn Harbor park that bears his name.

Roslyn native and Roslyn High School graduate Michael Crichton (1942–2008) was another prolific writer whose work was front and center of American popular culture from the 1970s onward. Hal David Ken Hechler The Roslyn native who has enjoyed the longest political career has been Ken Hechler. However, it wasn’t in New York where Hechler won elections. Rather, it was little West Virginia where Hechler served in the U.S. Congress for eight terms. A World War II veteran, Hechler also served in the administration of Harry S. Truman. He was later on the faculty of Marshall College in Huntington, WV, and from there, enjoyed a long career in elective politics. Now 101 years old, Hechler enjoys the distinction of being the oldest living person to have served in the United States Congress.

Paul Crifo For many ambitious New Yorkers, Hollywood and the motion picture industry is always a destination. Longtime Roslyn Heights resident Paul Crifo is now into his ninth decade. Behind him is a legendary career as an illustrator. Between 1950 and 1980, Crifo designed more than 140 movie posters and has long been considered one of the most prolific and talented designers of the genre. His compelling story is finally told in Mr. Movie Poster, a comprehensive look at years of breathtaking theatrical and personal artwork from Crifo’s vast archive.

We now turn from the world of writing to songwriting. Some of the most memorable pop lyrics of our time have been penned by longtime Roslyn resident Hal David (1921–2012). His legendary partnership with Burt Bacharach produced such classics as “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” “This Guy’s in Love with You,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “Walk on By,” “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me,” many of which were made famous in recordings by Dionne Warwick. Sherri Miller Sherri Miller is a Roslyn native who made the big move from Long Island to Nashville, where she began to make her own mark as a talented songwriter and performer. Born into a family of accomplished musicians, Miller has released two highly acclaimed CDs, Mantra and

Winning Hand. She also worked with such noted songwriters as J.D. Souther, Shawn Mullins and Tony Scalzo.

Richard N. Haass Richard N. Haass is a Roslyn native who currently serves as president of the Council on Foreign Relations. During his diplomatic career, he has served as director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State. He is the author of 12 books, including Foreign Policy Begins at Home: The Case for Putting America’s House in Order.

Allison Danzig Roslyn resident Allison Danzig was the nation’s first great tennis sportswriter. He is credited with coming up with the term “grand slam” to describe the game’s great tournaments. A native of Waco, TX, Danzig wrote mainly for The New York Times. In 1968, Danzig became the first sportswriter to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI.

Cameron Stracher Roslyn native Cameron Stracher has carved out his own unique niche in the world of contemporary American letters. Longtime Roslyn resident Stan Isaacs was a pioneering sports journalist of the 1950s and ’60s. He was one of the first sportswriters to write about televised sports. Isaacs, who spent the majority of his career at Newsday, was front and center at many of the great sporting events of his era: The Bobby Thomson home run which won the National League pennant for the New York Giants, Roger Maris’s record-breaking home run in 1961 that toppled Babe Ruth’s previous single-season record, the classic Muhammad Ali–Joe Frazier title fights and the New York Islanders own record-breaking Stanley Cup run through the 1980s. In addition to all of this, the Roslyn Public School District remains one of the top-performing school districts in the state and in the nation. By Josh Dinetz magine a high school setting where children can fully express their opinions and thoughts in small groups, choose the books they want to read and the courses they want to study, have equal rights to their teachers and learn democracy by actually running their program. At The Wheatley School, such a program not only exists, but thrives, as do the students who participate. School Within a School (SWS) is a unique program that provides an opportunity for students to learn, grow and develop in an alternative school setting. SWS occupies a three-period block at the end of the school day during which community members create their own schedule of English classes, including honors and advanced placement courses, as well as social studies electivesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; and allows students to engage in real democracy, taking charge of every aspect of the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s governance. Started in 1973 by Ted Tchack and Stuart Doig, SWS was designed to offer students more freedom in their academic and community pursuits. The goal was to foster a sense of ownership both for the students’ own education and for SWS as a whole. “SWS provides students with a real chance to find their voice in the community, in classes and in their writing,” says Patrick Clarke, SWS faculty adviser. “Being part of a small supportive learning community provides them with a safe place to grow as leaders and as learners.” Classes follow a two-day-a-week college-like format, which are divided into three categories. Students choose from an unbelievable selection of reading, writing and social science courses. Recent reading offerings include classics like Hamlet and Kindred as well as the contemporary novel A Visit from the Goon Squad. Writing classes allow for creativity, but writing reviews, college essay writing and boot camps are also offered to help students prepare for Regents and Advanced Placement exams. Since all SWS classes use writing as the primary assessment tool, students become proficient writers. In fact, many former community members have become accomplished authors whose books are displayed in the SWS room. “The community aspect of SWS changes the atmosphere in all of the classes, so everyone is more comfortable to speak up and participate,” says sophomore Talia Rosen. “The classes are also more specific to personal interests, such as Gothic Literature and Graphic Novel.” Unique electives are also available in social science classes, which range from history to music, people, countries, sports and fashion. The mock trial class culminates in a tournament that’s been offered for more than 30 years. “Our social science classes also allow us to discuss real issues like segregation, while still maintaining the SWS classroom structure that works so well for us,” explains Rosen. “Because the classes are so small—most have less than 15 people—every class feels more like a discussion and every student feels like they have value in the classroom.

The program has given me an opportunity to meet new people, be a part of something really amazing and learn a lot about reading, writing and the world in general.” Classwork is also reinforced through field trips. The school year began with hands-on learning in Washington, DC, to show the students what democracy is all about. After reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, students went as a group to see the Broadway show. As the NYC class was concluding, students visited Harlem and other areas of the city they were studying. In SWS, students can even teach a class—or co-teach with a teacher—which is a fantastic opportunity for students to lead a group. Students have recently taught classes on Greek Mythology, Modern Warfare and Gender Issues. Wednesday is SWS’s democracy day. The community meets in its dedicated classroom where issues are discussed, committees meet and work periods are held. Proposals are put forth and deliberated under the rules highlighted in the SWS constitution. After a thorough discussion, all members of the community, including teachers and students, vote. SWS has three standing committees to allow students to engage in the democratic process— academics, human relations (HR) and publications. Academics works on students’ schedules, chooses classes, creates the rosters and is in charge of making sure students get all the credits they need. HR works on party planning, events and arranging the annual trip to Philadelphia, Boston or Washington, DC. Publications promotes the community by writing articles, ordering T-shirts and organizing fundraisers.

These elements are overseen by a leadership team of elected officers including a moderator, recorder, treasurer, attendance coordinator, webmaster and committee heads, who meet with the faculty adviser to plan community activities. Students learn leadership skills running this democracy. “The community aspect is what binds us,” says Moderator Bri Clarfield. “Having support from them while challenging yourself academically aids in success for students—something other kids in our education system could benefit from as well.” With 75 students, about 25 each from the sophomore, junior and senior classes, SWS is for not just a place enriching education, but is also a place to broaden your social circle. s the sun set on a chilly Tuesday this past winter, the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center (JCC) was alive with activity. Its parking lot was packed with cars, and people of all ages were bustling in and out of the building. Young mothers carried excited children. A teenager waited for his ride home. An elderly man made his way to his car. A woman rushed to make an appointment with her personal trainer. A beehive of activity with dozens of programs and events daily, the JCC offers something for everyone. “Our goal is to enable life to flourish,” says Executive Director David Black, adding that the JCC is first and foremost a community-based organization that seeks to answer the essential needs of the community. In that sense, the JCC does not consider itself an organization for Jews, but rather an organization based on Jewish values. As a community center, the JCC welcomes anyone regardless of age, socioeconomic status and religion. With about 10,000 members and even more nonmembers participating in JCC programs, upwards of 15,000 people pass through the center’s doors each year. Located in East Hills, the JCC serves community members from Suffolk to Queens, although predominantly from East Hills, Roslyn and Great Neck. The JCC organizes itself into three central

pillars: youth and family; body, mind and spirit; and specialized services. “You get an aspect of every single thing, from little kids running around to seniors smiling and walking around,” says Philip Flynn, marketing project manager for the Health and Wellness Department. “It’s a very open society, even if you’re not Jewish. It’s a great environment just to work in and be around.” Adults and children alike can take personal or group fitness lessons ranging from aquarobics to Pilates to spin in the Health and Wellness Center, which boasts recently renovated basketball courts, a new indoor playground and a pool that opened in October. According to Flynn,

the Health and Wellness Department is working to expand the basketball programs and the adult pool programs, in line with these new renovations, as well as creative new types of personal training. A preschool, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, child care and summer camps are available for children. After-school programs range from a swim team to enrichment classes, and the JCC has even partnered with public schools to provide on-site after-school programs for children. Middle- and high-schoolers have the opportunity for Regents and college admissions preparation, while adults can participate in mah-jongg and canasta workshops. Senior programs include lectures, weekly current events discussions and monthly book clubs. “When I walked into the JCC, I got this overwhelming sense of family and community,” says JCC member and Roslyn resident Andrea Stein of her decision to send her son, who is now in kindergarten, to the JCC preschool four years ago. “I felt that there would always be, in addition to school, something going on for the kids. It really felt like a family-community place, which it has proven itself to be in these four years. Every time I come here, there’s a familiar face greeting me. I know I’ll always see my friends, and there will always be something to do. I know it’s always a second home.” The JCC also hosts a Center for Israel, where visitors

can learn about the Jewish state, attend Israel-themed celebrations and receive consultation about travel, work and study in Israel. This past winter, the center organized a film series celebrating award-winning movies made in Israel. HaZamir, a choral group that focuses on Jewish music, allows community youth to connect to their Jewish identities. Other Jewish-themed education includes meditation based on Jewish traditions and values, weekly Torah studies, Hebrew courses for all levels and a six-session workshop titled The Jewish Course of Why. In addition to educational programs, the JCC offers opportunities for cultural enrichment. This spring will commence a series of book signings with award-winning novels, including Tess Gerritsen’s Playing with Fire, Sarah Wildman’s Paper Love and Pam Jenoff’s The Last Summer at Chelsea Beach. The JCC held a Holiday Toy Drive in December and a canned goods drive in January and February. The Family Community Service Initiative allows families to work together in contributing to the community, while parents have the chance to teach their children the Jewish value of tikkun olam, repairing the world. The Initiative organized Celebration in a Box in February, an event where families put all the supplies needed for a birthday—or other celebration—in a box to be given to those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. The JCC also runs programs to help community members get back on their feet. Support groups and counseling services are available for young widows and widowers, recently divorced and those balancing life as a caregiver. Partners in Caring, a service funded by the UJA-Federation of New York and established with partner synagogues, brings professional social-work expertise to these support groups.

In addition to these groups, the JCC offers services to unemployed and underemployed members of the community. Its career center includes career counseling, skill-building workshops, financial and legal counseling and connections to potential employers. With free career-transition workshops,

Connect to Care advises individuals on résumé, interview and cover letter skills, and organizes networking events as well. The Vocational Training and Employment Center (VTEC) matches young adults on the autism spectrum or with other special needs to local businesses for valuable hands-on internships or employment.

The JCC provides other services for community members with special needs, including the Sunday RAVE Program, which began at the end of January and will continue for 12 weeks, offering sports, music, art, cooking and social activities. The community center also runs a program for people diagnosed with

Alzheimer’s, with a unique early-onset division geared toward those diagnosed between ages 40 and 60. “We look at ourselves to fill the void for needs that arise in the community,” Chief Operating Officer Joni Cohen says. If individuals or families cannot afford programs offered by the JCC, there are

opportunities for scholarships, as well as a set of springtime events geared at raising money for those who don’t have the means. “We don’t turn anyone away. For the Puerto Rico Community Service Program, the teens’ adventure began on Monday as they met their Global Works leaders at the San Juan Airport and settled into their dormitory-style beach-side accommodations in Cerro Gordo, Vega Alta. The following day, the group enjoyed a guided, educational tour of Old San Juan and learned about the rich history and culture of the island. For the next three days, they immersed themselves in service work in Villa del Rio, a 25-year-old close-knit community that despite economic hardship has rebuilt itself time and time again after being destroyed by tropical storms and hurricanes. Families are now working to replace their wooden houses with concrete structures that are safer and will last much longer in the Puerto Rican climate. The teens worked side by side with members of the community to aid these small construction efforts, learning how to mix concrete and taking on a variety of other tasks to help construct safe and comfortable housing for these determined families. In return, the families prepared home-cooked lunches,

Today, our last day of building, we head ed over with our gloves and shovels ready to build. After a long drive, we got to our destination an d started to build. Th e sun seemed to ge hotter through each t passing second, but we persevered and did what we came he re to do. With the sw eat puddles growing we took a well-deserv , ed break to hydrate and refuel. After ou break, we were all we r ll rested and ﬁnishe d the job. We sa id our good-byes and he aded over to the comm unity center where there was a deliciou s meal awaiting us. Af ter we ﬁnished and had time to cool do wn, we rushed into the vans to go back to the house, where we all piled into the sh ow ers in preparation of ou r visit to Temp le Beth Shalom. Be for e we left, we had a small service of ou r own, Ka bbalat Sh ab ba t. When we arrived at the temple , we were immediatel y welcomed by the local Jewish commun ity. We looked aroun d and found very few differences. It wa s a comfort to hear the sa me prayers chanted here and we all joined in. When we arrived back at the Big Yellow Hous e, we found a treat aw ait ing us: a feast of Ben and Jerry’s. Sports Stars Roslyn has produced some excellent athletesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; including a coach who made it to the Hall of Fame By Joe Scotchie

s this issue illustrates, the Roslyn area has made numerous contributions to the world of arts, entertainment, politics and business. It has also done the same in athletics. Roslyn is well-known for academics, but sports can provide young people with a break from the stress-filled world of endless testing and the pressure to enter prestigious universities. It is also undeniable that athletic competition builds character, a quality that can stay with young people for the rest of their lives. So, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s look at some recent notables. In basketball, George Beamon became the top scorer in Roslyn High School history while leading the Bulldogs to a Nassau County title in 2009. After a

solid career at Manhattan College, where he led that squad to an NCAA tournament bid, Beamon turned pro. He currently plays for the Island Storm of Charlottetown, Canada, in the National Basketball League (NBL). Another Roslyn athlete who turned professional is Emily Lipari. A highly popular Roslyn High School alumna, Lipari, a long-distance track star, made the cover of ESPN The Magazine while still in high school. Lipari ran for the legendary Villanova University track squad, where she was the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field champion in the mile. Lipari currently runs for the Boston Athletic Association. In recent years, Roslyn High School has produced other basketball stars. Mark Gjonlekaj led the Bulldogs to several playoff runs. After graduation, he matriculated up the road at SUNY College at Old Westbury, where he was selected as a Skyline Conference Co-Player of the Week in February 2015. Succeeding Beamon and Gjonlekaj on the hardwood has been Keandre Augustine. A senior guard for the Bulldogs, Augustine recently passed the 1,000-point mark in scoring for his high school career. Augustine, a native of Roslyn, played for John Glenn High School in Huntington before returning to Roslyn for his final two years. He has been named to the All County team, as an invitee to the Adidas Phenom in San Diego, while competing in the Long

Another top Roslyn athlete has one year of eligibility remaining. Augustine might remind fans of a young Allen Iverson, while Adam Combs brings back recent memories of Johnny Manziel on the football field. Entering his senior year, Combs has already had a successful career as the Bulldogs signal-caller. Along with Thomas Davis and Nick Epprecht, Combs, while only a freshman, led Roslyn to a conference title as Roslyn won the championship game against Port Washington in dramatic fashion. This past season, Combs had 355 yards rushing and 1,201 yards passing. He ran for three touchdowns and passed for 16 more. He goes into the 2016 season as one of the most exciting football players in the county.

In 2014, Joe Lettera, longtime head basketball coach at Roslyn High School, was selected for the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. Lettera coached the Bulldogs from 1958 to 1989, winning 405 games, while losing 210, for an impressive .668 winning percentage. Among his many star players was Michael Crichton, the future novelist and screenwriter. Upon being selected to the Hall of Fame, Lettera was characteristically gracious.“Thank you to every boy who played on my teams and were devoted to team play and gave full effort at every practice and game,” he said. “I was fortunate to have players [with] high intelligence and who were resourceful. Their success as adults was predictable. They have achieved as doctors, lawyers and businessmen, as authors, as a movie director and in coaching. ‘Good citizen’ is a label for all of them. I realized early that Roslyn was unique and I stayed for 32 years. It was my privilege to coach such boys.” That, of course, turned out to be a two-way street, as Roslyn remains privileged to have had such educators as Joe Lettera.

The Symbol of Roslyn Some facts behind our most recognizable landmark Completed in 1895, its inscription reads: “In loving memory of Ellen E. Ward, A.D. 1895, to whom Roslyn and its people were dear. She fell asleep January 18, 1893.” The tower is granite with sandstone trim. Its bell, which sounds at the hour, weighs 2,700 pounds. On its centennial anniversary in 1995, three of the clocks were returned to working order, courtesy of Morris Welte, the stepfather of Janet Galante, a future mayor of Roslyn. Local residents claim they still live by the clock’s time.

The Cannon 1890

The tower stands on a handsome lawn. The grounds include a smaller tower and a cannon captured by the USS Wasp from a Spanish gunboat, the Don Jorge Juan, sunken during the Spanish-American War. In front of the tower is a stone set with a plaque commemorating Roslynites who died during World War II.

he Village of Roslyn is famous nationwide as an innovator in historic preservation. The Ellen E. Ward Clock Tower is not the oldest building in the village, but it is the most well-known. The structure is named for a woman who was a longtime fixture in the Roslyn community and whose sons fought for the Union in the Civil War. The Clock Tower sits at the intersection of Roslyn Road and Old Northern Boulevard, serving as a point of departure for those heading either east or west on Long Island, or south down Roslyn Road and north towards Port Washington.

In 2014, Marshall Ward was the last descendant of the Ward family to live in the village. Ward, a Long Island native, had moved to Roslyn with his wife in 1986 to a house on East Broadway. In 2015, the Clock Tower was included in the annual Roslyn Landmark Society house tour. Local residents could walk up the steps of the tower for a panoramic view of Hempstead Harbor.
