Glen Cove Veteran Receives Eight Medals Congressman Steve Israel recently presented United States Army veteran, Corporal (Cpl) Benjamin Chrzanoski with six replacement service medals and two new medals for his brave service in Europe during World War II. “Our veterans deserve every benefit and medal owed to them after serving our country,” said Israel. “Mr. Chrzanoski is a true American hero who fought to defend our freedoms and refused to give up hope while being held captive for six months. I am honored to present him and his family with these medals that represent his bravery and willingness to risk his life to protect the United States.” After working with the Department of the Army to replace six of Chrzanoski’s service medals, the congressman’s office discovered that he was also entitled to the Prisoner of War Medal

In March of 1943, during his first semester at Columbia University, Chrzanoski was drafted into the Army. After completing a year of military training, he was shipped to England where he was given orders to join the 3rd Army in Metz, France after the invasion of Normandy. While engaged in intense combat with German forces during the Battle of Metz, Chrzanoski and a handful of his fellow American soldiers ran out of food and ammunition and had no other choice but to surrender. Chrzanoski and the other Americans were transported nearly 570 miles northeast to a camp in

They have served with honor and pride to protect our nation, yet, sadly, many veterans return from active duty only to face uncertain economic conditions. Veterans of the United States armed services often face financial hardship, and have problems finding jobs; some even find themselves wondering where their next meals will come from. Families of service members currently deployed are often confronted with similar challenges. And, while the problems persist throughout the year, they are often amplified during the holidays. “We are relying on the generosity of Long Islanders to help our veterans by donating what they can at NYCB’s Veterans Day Holiday Turkey & Food Collection Drive,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “The men and women who have served, but now find themselves facing hard times, deserve a traditional holiday-style meal to help ease their struggles, and we’re grateful to partner with NYCB in offering our help to bring a little cheer to them and make their holiday season a bit more hopeful.” To help veterans and the families of active-duty military personnel who are struggling to make ends meet, New York Community Bank (NYCB) and Island Harvest Food Bank are teaming up for a Veterans Day Holiday

VETERAN NEWS

In Honor of Our Hero

Anthony Garofalo, 1944 Seaman First Class and All Our Vets Who Fought for Our Freedom

Anthony Garofalo 1926-2014 Anthony Garofalo was born in Corona, NY and raised in Port Washington. In 1944, Tony enlisted in the Navy and received his basic training in Sampson, NY. After a brief assignment in Florida, he was transferred to Texas where he was assigned to a large seaworthy tug christened the ATA 198. Seaman First Class Garofalo’s duties took him to many locations in the Pacific theater including the Marshall and Philippine Islands where the ATA 198 was assigned to rescue sunken ships and transport disabled naval vessels to repair ports across the Pacific. While on watch Seaman Garofalo spent many hours keeping the vessel safe from the threat of attack from Japanese warships, torpedos and fighter planes.

Pal-O-Mine Hosts Special Event For Veterans Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. recently held an event on behalf of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA, www.iava.org), the nation’s leading post-9/11 veteran empowerment organization with a diverse and rapidly growing membership in America. Held at Pal-O-Mine’s Islandia facility, the event was attended by 55 people. Veterans and their families were invited to a day that featured a luncheon and a presentation by friend of Pal-O-Mine, Norman Lear, the renowned American television writer and producer of such popular 1970s sitcoms as All in the Family, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, Good Times and Maude. Lear shared his personal experiences as a World War II combat soldier. In addition, Pal-O-Mine made it a real family day with the vets’ children enjoying the pool and playground,

their wives learning about Pal-OMine’s Equine Assisted Learning programs, and everyone also benefitting from an understanding of natural horsemanship techniques practiced by Pal-O-Mine. The veterans learned that Lear enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces after the Pearl Harbor attack and that he served in the Mediterranean theater as a radio operator/gunner on Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers with the 772nd Bombardment Squadron, 463rd Bombardment Group of the Fifth Air Force which bombed Germany. He flew 52 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. Hearing the story of a decorated WWII vet by one of America’s best storytellers, and getting to know more about Pal-O-Mine and its programs for returning veterans, was a success.

Garofalo learned of the end of the war while on the ATA 198 towing a disabled vessel across the wide Pacific. Garofalo was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 16, 1946, promptly joined the reserves and continued his naval service for an additional three years. During his time in the naval service, he received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal. Garofalo started his own floor covering business, Anthony’s World of Floors, with his wife Rosemarie in 1972. In 1997, the business was awarded the Small Business of the Year. Their business is now owned and operated by their 3 sons, Richard, Robert and Joseph and daughter, Anne Marie Allen, and will continue to serve the community after 42 years together. Anthony and Rosemarie were married for 62 years until Anthony passed away on March 16th, 2014. Their enjoyment of being residents of Port Washington is reflected in the fact that most of their family, including their four children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, have settled in Port Washington. The whole family continues to have pivotal roles within the Port Washington community.

“Stand Down” To Clothe, Feed Disadvantaged Veterans

Anthony was active in Port Washington and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and served as treasurer of the Elks, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and was a member of Cancer Care. A hero to our homeland. A hero in our home. Anthony Garofalo served the nation, the community and his family with honor, pride and valor.
