County Rehabs Port Washington Senior Housing Development Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently announced the grand re-opening of the Landmark on Main Street affordable senior housing development in Port Washington. The county provided $600,000 in Federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program funds for the rehabilitation of 47 housing units in this facility. The Landmark on Main Street was originally constructed in 1995, at the site of the former Main Street School in Port Washington. It was the first low-income housing and historic tax credit project on Long Island. With this revitalization project, the building now houses 59 units of affordable senior housing, a renowned regional 425-seat theater and a community center that houses day and after school care and a teen center. With the combined aid of New York State, Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead, this rehabilitation project allows the Landmark on Main Street to meet the 2016 energy and rehabilitation standards and for seniors in Port Washington to continue to have an

affordable housing option. To assist young families and meet employers-need for a skilled and educated workforce, the county has partnered with the private sector. More than 3,500 new apartments have opened or are under construction in the county, with more than 1,591 units being constructed through the county’s initiative to convert vacant office space into apartments near transit centers.

• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs • Cortisone Injections • Gel Injections (often made with material from a roosters’ comb) • Joint Replacement Surgery Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune inflammatory disease. Typically, the onset of joint pain and swelling occurs, slowing over weeks to months and can be associated with fevers, weight loss, and fatigue. In RA the synovium, the protective membrane that lines and provides nutritional support to the joint surfaces, is attacked by an accumulation of inflammatory cells. Inflammation in the joint spaces causes the synovium to thicken and thus destroy cartilage and bone within the joint. If left untreated, RA can cause debilitating joint deformities. Currently there are a variety of available therapies which help slow the progression of disease.
Signs and symptoms of RA include:
• Morning stiffness • Symmetrical joint pain • Joint swelling

Are you having difficulty performing your usual daily activities because your joints ache? Are you experiencing stiffness that makes it difficult to get in and out of bed? If so, chances are you’re suffering from some form of arthritis. Arthritis is a non-specific term used to refer to joint pain and diseases and it encompasses more than 100 different forms. The two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of chronic joint pain and affects an estimated 30 million people in the United States alone. Normally, cartilage, which is firm and flexible connective tissue, lines the ends of each bone in the body. Cartilage provides a cushion between bones and enables smooth gliding motions of the joints. In OA however, the cartilage breaks down and causes joint pain and swelling. In end stage disease, the cartilage is completely worn away and the two opposing bones rub against each other,
Diagnosis of RA includes but is not limited to:
• Morning joint stiffness lasting greater than one hour • Swelling in at least three joints • Symmetric arthritis • Positive rheumatoid factor • X-ray images demonstrating joint space narrowing and bony erosions • Ultrasounds demonstrating inflammation of the joints
Treatment of RA includes:
• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs • Oral Steroids • Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (Humira, Enbrel, Rituxan, etc.) If you are suffering from arthritis and are looking to seek a medical evaluation, look no further than a rheumatologist. Those looking to downsize their homes but wanting to stay on Long Island now have an affordable option, right in the heart of the North Shore. Landing Cove, a new condominium development in Glen Cove, offers spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom homes for adults over the age of 55, will be move-in ready in September. “There’s nothing else out there at this price and size,” said Elyse Mayer, project manager from Douglas Elliman Real Estate. The starting price for a new unit is $389,000. Some of the homes include a walk-in pantry, washer and dryer, gas heat, central air and assigned parking spaces. The homes also feature open kitchens with wood cabinetry, granite countertops, decorative tile backsplashes and a full suite of stainless steel appliances, including gas ranges. All first-floor units have patios and the second floor residences have vaulted ceilings, which

Sell Your House and Travel: A Nomadic Grandmother Tells Her Story BY STACIE FASOLA
specialsections@antonmediagroup.com
According to AARP, 37 percent of travelers over 45 have tried going solo. Solo travel is on the rise for baby boomers and beyond, especially for solo female travelers. But women who are considering traveling on their own may need a little extra encouragement; research shows that over 20 percent of women are hesitant to travel solo versus only 7 percent of male travelers. Peggy Johnston’s husband died unexpectedly in 2007, just two months after her retirement. She was thrust into the biggest transition period of her life, but she didn’t lock the door and throw away the key. Peggy saw this as an opportunity to begin a new journey—on her own. “After my husband died, I knew that I wanted and needed to start a new life,” she said. “I was
retired, my adult children had their own lives, and I wanted to learn more about other places and cultures.”

But just like many female solo travelers, Peggy needed a little push. One day in 2009, she received an invitation to join Road Scholar’s safari in South Africa, a destination that had always been at the top of her list. “It fell into my lap, and it was a dream of mine,” said Peggy. “I didn’t even take a breath. I signed up immediately.” Not only did Peggy sign up for this life-list trip, but she committed to a life of exploration by selling her home. “That somewhat impulsive decision transformed my life, and I’ve been a nomad ever since.” Today, Peggy Johnston, 65, has been on more than 20 Road Scholar programs, nine of them as a solo traveler. Although her family was skeptical, Peggy wasn’t afraid of making this epic life change. “The reason I’m not personally afraid of traveling on my own is because of what started me on this journey. When my husband passed away, that was a life-changing event. I promised myself that I would never ever let fear stop me from experiencing life.” Not only is Peggy a trailblazer in this new wave of female solo travelers, she is also passing that love of learning and
travel down to the next generations. Last year, Peggy went on her first Road Scholar family adventure to the Grand Canyon with her daughter, 10-year-old granddaughter and her granddaughter’s other grandmother. For boomer women who are hesitant to enroll in their first solo trip, Peggy suggests starting small. “Do something close to home that doesn’t last very long,” said Peggy. “And then push the envelope, just a little bit.” A good way to ease into traveling on your own is to go with a group of travelers who share your same interests. For Peggy, she was looking to learn, and that’s why she decided to launch her new journey with Road Scholar. “Road Scholar is not a tour company; it’s a university of the world,” said Peggy. Peggy said that one of the things she likes most about traveling solo with Road Scholar is that she makes new friends along the way. “As a solo woman traveler, the Road Scholar experience is inclusive,” she said. “I find that Road Scholars are more welcoming to new experiences and new people.” She also said that traveling with a group like Road Scholar lets you relax and enjoy your experience, while local experts introduce you to the best things to do in a new place. “International travel, especially where I don’t speak the language, is something I would not consider doing with anyone else but Road Scholar. You miss too much! Even if it’s a place in the United States, like Chicago, you spend half the time figuring out what you want to do next. But Road Scholar gets you into the essence immediately.” Her last piece of advice? “Don’t let fear woo you. We’ve all got to go sometime, so you might as well make the most of it.” Thinking of trying your first solo trip? Still have questions? Visit www. roadscholar.com to learn more. Project Independence Taxi Trips Surpass 100K The Town of North Hempstead’s innovative senior initiative, Project Independence (P.I.), reached a milestone this month as it surpassed 100,000 taxi trips for P.I. members. The town began taking calls for P.I. back in 2008. “It’s a wonderful feeling to know that our Project Independence members have taken advantage of 100,000 free and discounted taxi rides, which have made their lives a bit easier,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “Project Independence has given thousands of seniors a sense of well-being, made them more self-reliant and allowed them to remain in their own homes.” New Hyde Park residents and P.I. member Adrianna Hatzis is a frequent rider of the discounted taxi rides. “Over the past year two years Project Independence’s taxi service has truly bettered my life by giving me transportation at a low cost when I was unable to drive, instead of depending on someone else,” said Hatzis. In June 2015 P.I. signed up its 10,000 member. In 2009 the Town of North Hempstead was named one of the top 25 healthiest places to retire in the nation by Money magazine and earlier this year became the first Town in Nassau County to receive the World Health Organization Global Network of Age-Friendly Communities designation, given by AARP, which declares the town an age-friendly place to live. AARP confers this designation on municipalities having progressive and forward-thinking public policies that serve older populations and that are friendly to all ages.

Right At Home’s Caregiver Of The Year Award BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF
specialsections@antonmediagroup.com
Going the extra mile in providing exceptional care for seniors and disabled adults often comes down to the everyday little things...the respectful help getting dressed...the favorite home-cooked meals...the encouraging nudge through therapy exercises...the seamless, on-time ride to doctor appointments...the engaging conversations and listening to stories of times long past. Being a remarkable at-home caregiver for today’s rapidly increasing senior population—more than 46.2 million older Americans as of 2014—is a challenging blend of career expertise and compassionate understanding. Not every person who enjoys older people can become a successful caregiver, notes Right at Home, an at-home care and assistance provider. “Central to our senior care services is our right people doing the right things the right way for the right reason,” said Gregg Balbera, president of Right at Home Nassau Suffolk. “In-home caregiving isn’t just a job, but a notable dedication to serving others. Right at Home caregivers become trusted friends and part of the family who help our clients not just get by, but thrive, living in their own homes.” For Right at Home clients, home settings vary from a house or condo to an assisted living apartment or nursing home room. Headquartered in Omaha, NE, with more than 500 U.S. locations and operations in seven additional countries, the company features caregivers who deliver personal, custom-tailored care.
To recognize the hard-earned efforts of caregivers across the country, Balbera said the adult home care organization created their Caregiver of the Year award program. The Caregiver of the Year award program celebrates the accomplishments of a select group of caregivers. Qualifications for Caregiver of the Year include being passionate about providing extraordinary care to clients—selflessly and professionally serving others while being a motivating team player. Clients and their families notice the above-and-beyond care and the nominated caregivers receive continual praise and recognition for their outstanding work. Top caregivers are nominated and judged based on the following criteria: character, client impact, brand ambassadorship, team spirit and professional development. Right at Home corporate staff reviewed 100 caregiver nominations this year and selected 20 finalists, representing the home caregiver organization’s four regions nationwide. The finalists then submitted
a videotaped testimonial, and a three-member community judging committee reviewed details on each of the finalists, selecting four region winners and one national winner. Region Caregivers of the Year receive a $1,000 check, an engraved crystal plaque and a celebratory dinner. The National Caregiver of the Year receives a $5,000 check, an engraved crystal plaque and an allexpense-paid trip for two to the annual meeting. At the event, the National Caregiver of the Year receives the distinguished award and a leisure package of choice to enjoy during the meeting week. The theme of the 2017 annual meeting is the “Power of One,” and the Right at Home franchise owners like Balbera see this strength exemplified in the tireless caregivers who give so much of themselves to help improve the quality of life for the seniors and disabled adults they serve. “Our caregivers are the cornerstone of our business, and each of them has the power to change a life and make someone’s life better,” explained Balbera. “The power of just one person who positively influences another person is incredibly far-reaching, and you see this lived out with family caregivers, too. All of us have the power to help at least one other person every day. Sometimes that’s with tangible care assistance and sometimes it’s simply with a smile or hug.” For more details on Caregiver of the Year, including the nomination and selection process and awards, visit www.rahcaregiver.com.

GDGC Offers Free Elder Law Hotline Genser Dubow Genser & Cona (GDGC) will host a free elder law hotline in response to Older Americans Month to help seniors understand how they can safeguard their assets and safeguard their healthcare. On Thursday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Long Island and New York City residents can call the GDGC hotline at 631-390-5000 and speak with an attorney about their specific needs regarding long term care and asset protection. “It’s critical for seniors to plan now and to take action to protect assets before expected changes in the laws are passed,” said Jennifer Cona, managing partner, GDGC. “By taking action right away, their plans will be grandfathered under the current laws.” One of the most dramatic changes that may happen regarding Medicaid is the increased look-back period, which could possibly be increased from the current five years to 10 years. “If this happens, many people who need nursing home care won’t be able to get it,” said Cona. They may also impose a look-back period for home care where there is none now. Another important proposed change is to abolish spousal refusal.
Currently, this right is protected by federal law and a waiver is required for any change. If states get exclusive control, spousal refusal may be a thing of the past. Again, planning ahead is the best way to avoid a crisis and to

You might go to the gym five days a week, sweat on the treadmill for an hour, and see maybe a pound or two drop in a month. Is that really worth your time? Or… imagine going to a medical facility, laying down, spending 35 minutes relaxing, then getting up and finding out you’ve lost two inches around your waist. Which do you prefer?
