Rocco A. Carriero wisely, as a well-crafted retirement income plan can help you avoid running out of money and feel more confident about what could be decades spent in retirement. If your assets include a mix of Social Security, annuities, retirement assets and other investment earnings, decide which you will tap into first. Remember that at 70 and a half years of age, you are mandated to take required minimum distributions from your traditional IRA and employer-sponsored retirement plans, so work this income into your plan. It also doesn’t hurt to work with

someone who knows what they are doing, like a tax advisor. Reducing the tax bill on retirement income must be a priority for retirees. Yet research shows 53 percent of retirees feel it is too complex. Starting the planning process early and seeking guidance from a tax and financial advisor can help. Rocco A. Arthritis Prevention And Care Tips

S

wollen, stiff and painful joints are common symptoms of arthritis or joint disease. There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions that can also affect connective tissues and organs, including the eyes, heart, lungs and skin. While thick, knobby fingers may reveal surface signs of arthritis, deeper down in the joints where bones connect, and even in soft tissue, is where arthritis can wield debilitating damage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 54.4 million American adults, or about one in four, have arthritis, and that by 2040, an estimated 78 million U.S. adults age 18 and older will have arthritis—a leading cause of work disability in the country. Anyone of any age can get arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation says that about 300,000 babies and children have arthritis or a rheumatic condition—but the joint disease becomes more common with age. “While the causes of many types of arthritis are unknown, a number of risk factors increase the likelihood of getting arthritis,” said Gregg Balbera, president of Right at Home Nassau Suffolk. “Age is a factor because the older you get, the more wear and tear your joints endure.

We work with a number of older clients who injured themselves when they were younger and the accumulated stress on their joints has accelerated the occurrence of arthritis.” The increased risk for arthritis is also higher among individuals who have chronic health conditions such as obesity or diabetes. The Arthritis Foundation reports that 31 percent of adults who are obese have arthritis and 47 percent of diabetics are arthritic.

Family genetics also influences who develops certain types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis. The CDC notes that inheriting specific genes, the HLA (human leukocyte antigen) class II genotypes, elevates the risk for arthritis and can intensify arthritic conditions. Common types of arthritis and risk factors Arthritis symptoms can come and go or be steadily persistent with

varying degrees of pain severity. Common types of arthritis include osteoarthritis, which is the most common type of arthritis that occurs when cartilage, the protective connective tissue on the ends of bones, thins and deteriorates, causing friction in joint movement. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder, occurs when a person’s immune system attacks the body’s healthy tissues, eroding the lining of joints (synovium) and triggering painful inflammation. Psoriatic arthritis, a type of inflammatory arthritis, is typically associated with psoriasis, a skin disease that presents with a red, scaly rash. People with psoriatic arthritis often experience swelling in their hands, knees, ankles and feet, with fingers and toes sometimes swelling to a sausage shape. Other familiar forms of arthritis include ankylosing spondylitis, mainly affecting the spine; gout, caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in a joint; and lupus, a systemic autoimmune disorder. How to prevent arthritis While some forms of arthritis cannot be prevented, many types can be minimized or slowed by making certain lifestyle changes. Some of

the best ways to keep joints healthy and prevent degenerative arthritis include maintaining a healthy weight, which adds stress to weight-bearing joints like the knees or hips and avoiding injuries to joints, ligaments and cartilage, especially if you are an athlete in high-impact sports. It is also a good idea to ease up on repetitive movements as certain activities and occupations with repetitive motions such as running, jumping, lifting, bending and kneeling can wear down cartilage that cushions joints in the body. Be smart and protect your immune system as a strong, healthy immune system can help counter inflammatory arthritis and can also lessen symptoms of infectious arthritis caused by a virus, bacterium or fungus. Last but not least, avoid smoking. Research has found that smoking elevates a person’s risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis and can heighten the disease symptoms. Smoking also lowers the body’s immunity levels and hinders a person from staying physically active. Care tips for arthritis A thorough evaluation, early diagnosis and on-target treatment from a rheumatologist will help lessen joint changes and chronic pain. In treating and managing arthritis, a central goal is to reduce symptoms and improve a person’s mobility and function. For

mild to moderate arthritis symptoms, the doctor may advise a combination of the following at-home care tips: taking over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medicines; taking prescription corticosteroids or anti-rheumatic drugs; applying heat and cold therapies to soothe pain; staying active, yet getting sufficient rest; strengthening the muscles around the affected joint; allowing the joint to rest and protecting it from overuse or strain and eating a

nutritious diet to maintain a healthy weight; and boosting the body with anti-inflammatory foods such as green, leafy vegetables and fatty fish. “An arthritis diagnosis can be a lot to handle, especially for older adults and adults with disabilities,” said Balbera. “This is where a strong support system of family, friends and professional at-home caregivers proves invaluable. Together, we can help the loved one follow a treatment plan of medications,

Snowbirds Beware: Watch Out For The Tax Man BY KAREN TENENBAUM

I

specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

t is great to be able to spend the winter months in a warm climate and then return to New York in the summer to be with your children and grandchildren. While dual homes offer many benefits, they can also cause significant tax problems if you don’t know the rules. If you have a primary residence outside of New York, but also own or use residential property in New York, you may be subject to a New York residency audit. This can result in a big tax bill because a New York resident must pay state income tax on all income, regardless of where it is earned. Nonresidents pay tax to New York State on only New York source income, such as wages or rental income earned in New York. There are two tests for residency and either one can make you a New York resident. The first is the location of your domicile. Your domicile is the one place you intend to have as your permanent home. Auditors will look at several factors to determine your domicile, such as: What is the use, maintenance, value and size of your New York home as compared to that of the non-New

Karen Tenenbaum York home? Where do you conduct your business activities? Where is your family residing? Where do you keep special items (photos, jewelry, pets, etc.)? How much time do you spend in New York as compared to your out-of-state residences? Other factors like where you have a driver’s license, register to vote and have bank accounts, won’t help you, but can be held against you. Remember, even if you do not spend significant time in the state, New York can still be considered

your domicile. If your domicile is not in New York, do you maintain a permanent place of abode and spend more than 183 days of the year in New York? Let’s say you moved to Florida, but you kept your New York house so you can freely visit. To determine if you are a New York resident for income tax purposes, auditors will check if you have a permanent place of abode in New York, defined as a residence (building or structure in which a person can live) that is maintained by the taxpayer and is suitable for yearround use. Even if others are using the place (relatives, renters, etc.), it could still be considered your abode under certain circumstances. Next, you must meet the day count requirement. Generally, the rule is that a partial day counts as a full day, with some limited travel and medical exceptions. So even going to dinner in New York counts as a full day. A residency audit is very document intensive and personally

invasive. Typically, you have the burden to prove that you were not in New York. Auditors can look at your appointment calendars, credit cards, passports, phone bills, cell phone site data, mobile apps that track and record your location and other documents to determine whether you have met either of the tests for New York residency. Unfortunately, if you’re not careful, you can lose out on some of the benefits of your second home. If you’ve received a New York residency questionnaire or are being audited, there are several options available for resolving your tax dispute. Contact a qualified attorney to assist you. A Monument Is Like Love, It’s Eternal

Preventing Common Health Issues In Older Adults As people age, a number of health conditions can shift, causing mild irritation and consternation to a full outbreak of pain and disability. For some older adults, their eyesight dims or hearing fades. For others, arthritis sets in or their teeth start to break. Since American seniors on average are living another 19 years once they reach age 65, those two decades can prove challenging for keeping healthy. “Many changes in physical condition and ability gradually occur as a person ages, so what is considered a ‘minor health issue,’ a cut on the skin for example, can be a serious health risk to an elderly person,” said Gregg Balbera, president of Right at Home Nassau Suffolk. “So how can a senior ward off the common health issues of aging and remain healthy overall in later life? Are certain declines in health inevitable or actually preventable?” Balbera suggests prevention measures for age-related health changes in older adults.

Skin • Protect your skin from the damaging effects of sun exposure. Staying out of direct sun is one of the most effective and cheapest ways to maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin. The American Academy of Dermatology offers a number of valuable resources on sun safety, including how to select and apply sunscreen. • Get an annual full-body skin check from a professional dermatologist. The Cleveland Clinic estimates that 40 to 50 percent of people who live to at least age 65 will develop basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer at least once. Skin cancer in the United States is the most prevalent type of cancer. • Prevent skin dryness and itching by increasing humidity in the home and countering the drying effects of winter overheating and summer air

conditioning. • Go easy on using antiperspirants, soaps and perfumes, and taking hot baths or showers—all of these are drying on the skin. Applying a moisturizer within a few minutes after taking a bath or shower can help prevent skin dryness. • Keep adequately hydrated. • Ask your doctor about getting the shingles vaccine. Older adults are more susceptible to contracting this painful, blistery skin rash that lives in nerve cells after an earlier outbreak of the chickenpox virus.

Embrace every day because every day counts.

Dental • Brush your teeth at least twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Clean between teeth daily with dental floss or a special flossing product. • Clean dentures daily with specific cleaners designed for dentures. • Relieve dry mouth symptoms by drinking more water and using an over-the-counter spray or mouthwash moisturizer. If dry mouth is a problem, check with your physician about changing medications or dosages. • Visit your dentist at least once a year for teeth cleaning and a dental exam. • If daily oral care is challenging, talk with your dentist or dental hygienist about a different approach with keeping teeth and gums clean. • Quit smoking. Smoking leads to increased problems with tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss.

Sensory • Get a yearly eye exam if you are age 50 and older or have known health risks. If you are diabetic, you will need regular eye exams and careful blood sugar monitoring. • Eat a nutritious diet that promotes healthy eyesight. Foods packed

the bladder. Some people find that sodas, artificial sweeteners and citrus- and tomato-based foods make bladder problems worse. Constipation can also put extra pressure on the bladder and keep it from properly expanding. • Practice wise health habits overall. Since there is no sure-fire prevention for prostate cancer, medical professionals recommend reducing risk for the disease by maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active and eating a diet high in certain vegetables. Several studies have shown that consuming cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower), tomatoes, soy, beans and other legumes have lowered the risk for prostate cancer.
