Day Trips To Take In New York BY DAN QUINONES editorial@antonmediagroup.com
I
t may not look like it just yet, but it is officially spring. That means spring break is right around the corner. It’s probably too late for a trip to Miami, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing left for you to do. Here are some activities for anyone who is looking to get out of the house this spring. Venture out to the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center
The Long Island Aquarium is the perfect place to go if you are interested in learning about marine life. The aquarium has a number of indoor and outdoor exhibits and a variety of unique interactive experiences that range from taking a selfie with a penguin to diving with sharks. The 20,000-gallon coral reef exhibit is one of the largest all-living, closed-system coral reef displays in the Western hemisphere. The exhibits contain mostly aquatic animals, but also contain bird and bug exhibits. The aquarium is located at 431 East Main Street in Riverhead. ......................
Go to a baseball game
The MLB season is starting early this year, which means spring break is your chance to get to the ballpark and see a game. Both the Yankees and Mets seasons have started at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field and both teams are expected to contend for a playoff spot, so fans can expect to see exciting baseball in New York this season. What better way to enjoy a spring afternoon than with America’s pastime? ......................
Visit the Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. Visitors can take tours with Park Rangers or listen to an audio tour in their choice of one of twelve languages that will take them around Liberty Island. They can also visit 6A | SPRINGTIME! • APRIL 4 - 10, 2018
the Statue of Liberty’s crown, its stone pedestal, or the Liberty Island museum. A ticket is required to visit the crown or the pedestal, and a ticket to one is required to access the museum. The Park Ranger tour is free to join. A trip to see the 305 ft. tall symbol of freedom is a great way to spend an afternoon in New York.
Visit The Metropolitan Art Museum
“The Met” is the largest art museum in the United States, and was the second most visited art museum in the world in 2016. The Met’s permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The museum is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue with a second part, the Met Breuer, at 945 Madison Avenue. The Met Breuer extends the museum’s modern and contemporary art program. With a permanent collection that contains over two million works,
there is something for everyone to enjoy. ......................
Take a Central Park tour
Central Park is the largest public park in New York. At 1.317 square miles, it is simply too difficult to find everything Central Park has to offer on your own. So why not join one of the many tours that are offered? Tours range from exploring waterfalls, bridges and pools on the North Woods Tour, to a walkthrough of Central Park to see how New Yorkers use Central Park to remember our veterans in the Memorial Walk Tour. Tour prices range from free to $15. Central Park is sure to have something for everyone who likes the outdoors.

Spring Into Sports BY CHRIS BIRSNER
specialsections@antonmediagroup.com
W
ith the dreariness of winter almost behind us, it’s time to start getting ready for the spring. Nicer weather should be taken advantage of and that’s why many people get into various springtime sports, such as baseball, lacrosse, and soccer. On Long Island, there’s plenty of places where youth and adult programs are held for people interested in improving their skills. From personal training to physical therapy to team workouts, here are five of the best places on Long Island to make the leap into sports again.
Storm Sports Academy
7 Terminal Rd., West Hempstead 516-481-2255; www.storm sportsacademy.com A 20,000-square foot facility, the Storm Sports Academy opened in 2013 and has already built itself as a top facility in the northeast. In addition to training in baseball, it is also home to travel baseball teams that have
been around for more than 15 years. Recent teams were sponsored by New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and 2015 Mets firstround pick Justin Dunn. They also have training and teams for lacrosse and a softball program which they refer to as the “Storm Fastpitch Academy.” If you are into international favorites like soccer or cricket, they have training for those as well.
Professional Athletic Performance Center
645 Stewart Ave., Garden City 516-227-2373; www.papcstrong.com Open since 2005, PAPC works with all kinds of athletes from young to old and amateur to elite. They expand well beyond just skill training. It is also a top-notch physical therapy center for those dealing with injuries. Trainers will teach athletes skill sets for various sports (Baseball Basketball, Swimming, etc.), but will also help them develop ways to prevent injuries while playing them. The facility includes a 55-meter track and a professional weight room. They are also an official affiliate of the New York Islanders.

They also host metabolic fat burning classes for those who want a higher intensity workout.

to everybody. They work oneon-one or with small groups to help you train through scientific principles. That may sound complex, but AFTLI tailors their services to make it a more comfortable experience. All of their work is done in a high-tech, 6,000-square foot facility and will most likely help you improve in any sport you play in.

The center focuses mainly on badminton, table tennis and indoor soccer. In addition to it being open for recreational use, they offer youth and adult group training sessions on badminton. Take A Hike BY NICOLE LOCKWOOD
A
editorial@antonmediagroup.com
With the help of Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, a nonprofit grassroots organization that has created more than 200 miles of hiking paths, the best way to kickstart your fitness goals could be as easy as taking a walk, particularly a walk through some of Long Island’s most scenic parks and trails. “Most of the people you find on the trails tend to be there because it’s their form of exercise,” said David Reisfield, president of Long Island Greenbelt. “We
have everyone from millennials to Generation Xers to much older people. Personally, I run the trails every day.” Long Island Greenbelt trails are suited to meet the needs of any walker, runner or hiker, presenting a range of options throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. There are long distance trails such as the Nassau Suffolk Trail (20 miles), the Long Island Greenbelt Trail (32 miles) and the Pine Barrens Trail (43 miles), as well as shorter ones,
s the weather begins to lend itself to more opportunities to get outside and enjoy more of the fresh air, it’s time to dust off those New Year’s resolutions. For many, an improvement in fitness may be on the agenda, but getting into a steady workout regimen can be a daunting, often impractical task. If gym memberships, yoga, spin classes, kickboxing and other conventional methods of activity have failed in the past, perhaps the solution is much simpler.
the most popular being the Walt Whitman Trail (3.8 miles) and the Cold Spring Harbor Hills and Loop Trail (4.8 miles). These paths, and the many others associated with the organization, are unique in that they are open to the public for use at all dates and times, allowing participants to trek at their own pace whenever is most convenient for them. All listed trails have National Recreation Trails designations, so even when certain state parks are closed, hikers are still permitted to walk through. Aside from being a healthy and time-flexible activity, the trails within the Long Island Greenbelt system serve as a center of social interaction, bringing together people of all ages and levels of fitness from across the island for nearly 39 years. “People are just happy to have a place to go to meet like-minded people and get outside,” said

Reisfield. “You don’t even have to be a member or make a reservation. Just get out and go.” It is not uncommon to see many running clubs and walking groups at any given time on the trails. Long Island Greenbelt has a MeetUp group of its own, currently consisting of about 4,300 members. There are also guided hikes every Saturday that vary in location from week to week. The hike leaders are some of Long Island’s most knowledgeable when it comes to indigenous plants, trees and wildlife, as well as the specific topography of the region at hand. The evident community-oriented spirit has been the driving force of the organization, embodied in its very inception in 1978. As described by Reisfield, the start of Long Island Greenbelt was the culmination of the work of a group of “nature enthusiasts” and people who simply loved to hike. “We live in a fairly densely populated area, but there’s also so much nature that goes unnoticed for the most part,” said Reisfield. “They found their way through the state parks, town parks and county
parks, and created trails to link them all.” What began as a small group united by a passion for nature and the outdoors has grown enormously and been able to function and thrive, but not without the help of dedicated volunteers and members who support the organization both monetarily and through routine maintenance of the grounds. Being that it is a nonprofit organization, all trials, whether guided or not, are always free of charge. “I think for the most part people are shocked that these trails even exist and are even more shocked that they’re free,” said Reisfield. “We love that people don’t have to be members, they just have to show up.” The next local hike is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, at 10 a.m. at Welwyn Preserve. It is considered an easy two-to-three mile hike through the Glen Cove preserve, out to the Long Island Sound and back again. Visit www.ligreenbelt. org for more information about the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference and the upcoming guided hikes.

Family Fishing Festival Comes To Belmont Lake
he New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 7, at Belmont Lake State Park. Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, Renewal by Andersen, Suez Water, Dick’s Sporting Goods and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” regional director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing
season and introduce your family to the sport with no license needed to participate.” Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. As the supply of loaner rods is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by the DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win some great prizes. Governor Andrew Cuomo has expanded recreational opportunities of residents and tourists, positioning New York State as a recreation destination, connecting communities to state lands, and improving
the quality of life. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails, and parking areas. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age
16 and older has been suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid NYS freshwater fishing license to legally fish. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 1,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout by DEC. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with trout by DEC. This event will be held rain or shine. A vehicle use fee of $8 will be in effect. Parking is free for Empire Passport holders. For more information call I FISH NY at 631-444-0283 or Belmont Lake State Park at 631-667-5055, or visit DEC’s website at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/44804. html. —Submitted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

Secrets To A Hoppy Bunny BY BETSY ABRAHAM
BaBraham@antonmediagroup.com
I
f Easter brought a new addition to your home in the form of a big-eared, fluffy-tailed bunny, you might find yourself wondering why your new friend is a bit more commitment than you initially bargained for. If that’s you, you’re not alone. Statistics show that 80 percent of rabbits bought at Easter time end up abandoned once owners realize how much work these balls of fluff can be. And even though they require a lot of TLC, bunnies can be great pets, especially for adults and older children. Here are a few tips on caring for your pet bunny and making sure that Mr. Cottontail is part of your family for a long time.
A Hare-raising Diet Hay hay hay. That’s the key to a rabbit’s diet, which should be 75 to 80 percent of grass hay. Good quality high fiber pellets and leafy green veggies, including spinach, swiss chard, kale and bok choy, as well as fruits like apples, pears, peeled bananas, and mango, are also important.
A Place To Hop Keeping rabbits indoors protects them from predators, parasites and extreme weather conditions. It also makes them part of the family. A rabbit’s space—whether a cage or exercise pen or other protected housing area—should be safe and secure, stocked with toys and a litterbox. According to the House Rabbit Society (www.rabbit.org), a rabbit’s home should be at least four to six times the size of your bunny when it is entirely stretched out, more so if it is confined for a large amount of the day.
20A | SPRINGTIME! • APRIL 4 - 10, 2018
Find An Exotic Vet Not all veterinarians are properly equipped to see rabbits, which are classified as an “exotic” species. When considering a potential veterinarian, make sure to ask if they have experience with rabbits specifically and how many bunnies are seen at their clinic each week. You should also consider spaying or neutering your rabbit; altered rabbits live longer, healthier lives and are also less aggressive.
Get On The Litter Train Litter-training your bunny early will save you many a headache later on. Medium to large-sized cat litter boxes, filled with recycled newspaper or animal bedding, wood stove pellets or ground corncob pet litter as well as hay, usually do the trick. Multiple boxes in various corners might be necessary until your rabbit gets the hang of it and establishes a routine. If the bunny starts to lift her tail, ready to urinate, gently herd her back to her litterbox. After your bunny uses the box, praise her and give her a treat. As the rabbit is learning, experts advise to let the litter box stay a little dirty, otherwise your bunny will think she is not supposed to use it.
Give The Relationship Time While you may have grand visions of cuddling with your rabbit every night, your new pet may not be there just yet.
Bunnies need time to acclimate to their new environment. Build the friendship by getting your rabbit used to your voice, either by talking to him or other people. Don’t be afraid to get on his level, sitting quietly on the floor and giving him space to hop over to you, take some sniffs and hop away again. Small treats, like raisins or banana slices, are also little ways to win their affection.

Grow
Into Vegetable Gardening BY KAREN MUSGRAVE
editorial@antonmediagroup.com
S
pring has arrived and now is the time to begin vegetable gardening. Growing your own produce is a great project for the entire family and it will provide you with fresh, delicious food to enjoy for many months to come. Here are some tips on how you can easily spring into growing your own grocery list for fresh, straight-from-your-garden flavor this season. Where to Begin
Vegetable gardening should not be overlooked in early spring. Now is a great time to decide where the garden will go and how much space you have available. So many of us wait until after we’ve already purchased the plants to decide where the garden should go and that is when we discover we have purchased too many plants. Save time and money and produce more fruit and vegetables by taking the time to measure now. Then, when you shop for your plants you can use those measurements to plant the space you have. Tip: Take some pictures of the area with your phone as well as a picture of the piece of paper with the measurements on it—that way the information is with you no matter when you decide to shop. By taking the time to prepare your garden now, and then following through on watering, pruning and fertilizing the rest of the season, you will ensure your garden is lush and fruitful.
When to Plant
One of the questions I hear most often this time of year is “Is it time to plant?” The answer depends entirely on which vegetables you want to plant. Early April is a great time to plant cool weather crops such as lettuce, onions, carrots, kale, radishes and spinach to name a few. These types of veggies perform best in daytime temperatures that are around 60-65-degrees and will tolerate some light frost. They are harvested in late June through July before the heat of summer. Warm weather crops like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers should not be planted outdoors until after May 15. A word about fruit trees and berry bushes: 22A | SPRINGTIME! • APRIL 4 - 10, 2018
Fruiting trees and shrubs such as figs, blueberries, strawberries, pears, plums and grapes can also be planted outdoors now. As with vegetables, follow the proper spacing, fertilizing and watering guidelines so that you can produce the best possible harvest.
Where to Plant Vegetables
Vegetable gardens should be located in full sun; avoid areas that are shaded by trees, buildings or other structures. The soil should drain well and not puddle for any length of time.
Prepping the Soil
Good soil preparation before planting will guarantee healthy vegetable plants and higher yields at harvest time. Mix in a soil amendment with a high organic content such as Dr. Earth Vegetable Garden Planting Mix or compost into the soil. Rake the area smooth and level, breaking up clods and lumps of soil.
Planting Vegetables
It is important to follow the spacing guidelines on the seed pack or plant label for each type of vegetable. This ensures your plants have the room they need to grow and produce fruit. Plants like tomatoes, peppers and eggplant may require the extra support of a tomato cage or stakes.
Fertilizer
Remember, you are what you eat, so choosing an organic fertilizer for your vegetable garden is a must. One of my favorites is Espoma Garden-tone, which is an all-natural, organic, slow release, continuous feeding fertilizer. Apply once a month May through August for optimum results.
Watering
Water vegetable gardens only when the soil is dry and needs it. Deep, but infrequent, watering, two or three times a week is best if there is no natural rainfall. Excessive watering may encourage insect and disease problems.
Mulch
Use a mulch to prevent weeds, conserve water and cool soil temperatures. Growing your own food is so rewarding. Whether you try planting just one lettuce plant this spring or decide to expand into a larger space, I hope you’ll get it a try. Nothing tastes better than the fruits and vegetables you grow yourself. Karen Musgrave, CNLP, is a marketing and education specialist at Hicks Nurseries.

Spring To Visit In The

W
ith a population of 7.5 million squeezed into an area of 1,400 square miles, it might surprise you that any nature on Long Island has been preserved, but indeed it has. Quite a bit of it, in fact. In addition to dozens of wildlife refuges, hiking trails and nature centers, Long Island has many inviting parks and gardens, now in full bloom. Here are some green spaces you can visit this spring: Old Westbury Gardens
The former estate of the Phipps family is now a nonprofit that welcomes visitors of all ages to tour the historic Westbury house and its formal gardens, to participate in its educational programs and to enjoy its museum exhibits and outdoor concerts. The 200-acre property features several manicured gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes. 24A | SPRINGTIME! • APRIL 4 - 10, 2018
In April and May, azaleas, bluebells, daffodils, dogwoods, English daisies, forget-me-nots, lilacs, mountain laurel, pansies, primroses, tulips, wildflowers and wisteria are expected to bloom. Old Westbury Gardens is open every day except Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www. oldwestburygardens.org for the events calendar and more.
New York Botanical Garden
Nassau County Museum of Art
Though not on Long Island, the New York Botanical Garden is nearby in the Bronx and absolutely worth the trip. This spring, get lost among the azaleas, cherry trees, lilacs, magnolias and water lilies. Don’t miss complex living sculptures on display at the 16th annual Orchid Show, which runs through April 22. Plan your visit at www.nybg.org. The garden is open year-round, Tuesday through Sunday, and select holiday Mondays, typically from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In addition to its fine art exhibitions and those on permanent display, this acclaimed museum in Roslyn Harbor also includes a sculpture park, formal garden of historic importance, an arboretum of pine trees, rare specimen trees and marked walking trails. The garden was designed in the 1920s by Marian Cruger Coffin to reflect the great country estates of the era. Today, the carefully reconstructed brick paths, perennial borders and
33
intricate boxwood designs provide peace and sanctuary to all who visit. The museum and grounds are open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Visit www.nassaumuseum.org for more information. ......................
Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park Much like others included on this list, Planting Fields was once a Gilded Age estate that now, in the hands of a foundation, endeavors to educate, enrich and entertain the visiting public. At 400-acres, the Upper Brookville property contains the historic Coe Hall, as well as several greenhouses, woodland paths, an herbarium of more than 10,000 specimens and an extensive variety of gardens. Expect flowering trees and bushes to be in bloom in April and May, as well as daffodils and other spring bulbs. The grounds are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plan your visit at plantingfields.org. ......................
Clark Botanic Garden Operated by nonprofit The Fanny Dwight Clark Memorial Garden Inc., Clark Botanic Garden is a 12-acre living museum and educational facility located in the small hamlet of Albertson. At the garden you’ll find native spring wildflowers, conifers, roses, perennials, daylilies, wetland plants, rock garden plants, herbs, butterfly plants, medicinal plants and dozens of unique collections. Visit www.clarkbotanic.org for a list of special events and more. The garden is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Bailey Arboretum This beautiful 42-acre arboretum is home to the world’s largest dawn redwood (Metasequoia), a variety of tree thought to have been extinct for millions of years until 1941. Renowned horticulturist and philanthropist Frank Bailey planted the seedlings at his Lattingtown estate in 1947 where they have grown into spectacular specimens with ropelike trunks and branches. Bailey Arboretum is a lovely place for a picnic or a stroll through the landscaped gardens. It also boasts many activities for children and educational opportunities for adults. Admission is free. Visit daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Learn more at www.baileyarboretum.org.
John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden Last year, the North Shore Land Alliance purchased the Humes Garden from the Humes Japanese Stroll Garden Foundation. The 28-acre parcel in Locust Valley has been restored and is now open to those seeking a meditative experience. Full of North American and Asian plants, the defining feature of the garden is the stepping stone path which guides visitors through the Japanese landscape and ends at the pondside teahouse. The opening date has not yet been set, but the stroll garden is expected to open later this spring. Visit www.northshorelandalliance.org for more details about the Humes Garden as well as the organization’s many other conservation projects. ......................
Bridge Gardens This gem in Bridgehampton features a wide variety of perennial and annual flowers and shrubs. Its mission of conservation means that the vegetable garden and use of sustainable practices benefit the community. A four-quadrant herb garden divides herbs into culinary,

medicinal, ornamental and textile dye purposes. Operated by Peconic Land Trust, Bridge Gardens hosts educational and recreational programming all year. It is open to the public seven days a week. Find more information at peconiclandtrust.org. ......................
Farmingdale State College Horticulture Teaching Gardens At a college known for its horticulture program resides four acres of a series of theme gardens which have been evolving since the 1930s. As part of their course requirements, students have laid out the beds and borders, prepared the soil and maintained the plants in the gardens. Enjoy annuals, perennials, grasses, roses, beech hedges, herbs, dwarf conifers, weeping Higan cherry trees and more. The teaching gardens are open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Learn more at www.farming dale.edu.
Though in a borough of New York City and only geographically part of Long Island, this stunning 52-acre garden is a must-see, especially in springtime. In April, visitors are treated to blooming Japanese apricot, wild columbine, tree peony, Weigela, wild hyacinth, Kanzan cherry, tulips, eastern redbud and many more works of art by Mother Nature. Located in the Prospect Park neighborhood, Brooklyn Botanic Garden represents the very best in urban gardening. Visit www.bbg.org for hours and admission rates. ......................
Queens Botanical Garden The Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis originally built for the 1939-1940 World’s Fair. There are many distinct gardens to explore, including the bee garden, which houses Italian honeybees and is used for teaching, the circle garden, made up of tall sun-loving perennials, the green room, an 8,000-square-foot habitat for birds, insects and native woodland plants, and the colorful perennial garden. The garden is open every day except Mondays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit queensbotanical.org for more information. Many of these gardens rely on support from the community to thrive. Consider donating or volunteering to help ensure these treasures remain open. FRUIT IN SEASON
Absolutely F Apricot
smosco@antonmediagroup.com
or anyone who prefers to keep their fruit intake seasonal, the time is now for apricots. Relatives to peaches, the golden orange fruits boast a velvety skin with a juicy interior that is smooth and sweet with a faint tartness that brings taste buds to attention. Fresh apricots are available from May through August and are chock full of vitamin C, beta-carotene and fiber. But the health benefits of this spring treat are far more extensive than that, with ailment applications including indigestion, constipation, earaches, fever and more. Here’s a quick lesson on a mere handful of benefits housed within the apricot.

Smooth Moves
The apricot’s potassium aids in maintaining fluid balance in the body, distributing energy evenly to the organs and muscles that need it most. An even level of electrolytes ensures more energy, less cramps and a freer flow of blood through the body.
Apricots are so rich in fiber that they are recommended to anyone who suffers regularly from constipation. The fibrousness of the apricot stimulates the gastric and digestive juices to help break down food for easier processing.

Have A Heart A diet that includes plenty of apricots can protect the heart from disease, including atherosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes. The apricot’s vitamin C, potassium and dietary fiber all help to strengthen cardiovascular health, with vitamin C ousting free radicals, potassium easing tension in blood vessels and arteries and dietary fiber flushing excess cholesterol.
I’ve Got A Fever And The Only Cure Is More Apricot The vitamins, calories, minerals and water packed within an apricot provide fever relief, while also detoxifying organs and reducing inflammation throughout the body.
Lend Me Your Ears
Anemia Arsenal
While this is still being studied by scientists, apricot oil is believed to aid in earache relief. According to Science Direct, its the antioxidant properties of apricots that make it good for terrible ear pain.
With its iron and copper properties, apricots can help form hemoglobin, which in turn treats the weakness, fatigue, light-headedness, digestive problems and general dysfunction associated with anemia.

COVER ART
About The Artist
J
ohn Parasco lives in Manhasset and is a member of the Manhasset Art Association. The cover art, his painting titled “Early Spring,” is acrylic on canvas. “I enjoy a broad spectrum of art and varying subject matter and my interest is in seizing a personal and intimate view in common place people and subjects,” said Parasco, who is self-taught. “Stylistically, I always let the subject matter dictate the painted effect portrayed, allowing life’s experiences to be recorded as stories told. I hope you enjoy the view.” To learn more about the artist or to purchase prints of his work, email jp52omega@gmail.com.
Honorable Mentions Anton would also like to congratulate Nina Wolf and Carol Hwang as honorable mentions in our cover design contest. Thank you to the Manhasset Art Association for their particiaption and the outstanding caliber of submissions we received from many of their members.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’ve been known to come up with systems that create order in chaotic situations. This week, you’ll reprise your role as a solutions provider. This time around will be like before in that you’ll need to act quickly and decisively. But once the initial moves are made, take a step back, ask more questions, and listen hard. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). It is better to be fragile like a flower than fragile like a bomb. The flower is probably more resilient than it looks. It gives beauty in its vulnerable state. Disable your anger to avoid being the ticking time bomb. Rewire your thoughts. Once connected differently, your power will be directed to a creative purpose. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Love gurus suggest that the infatuation stage of a relationship (or a specialized interest) can last up to two years. You’ll notice some of the “extra” attraction energy has worn off. What takes its place is either the feeling it’s time to move on, or the satisfaction, integrity and reward that comes from making a real investment. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Someone is adding to your happiness this week. You are still a whole person without his or her contribution, but it sure is a secure, powerful feeling to know you have the energy and intention of others flowing toward the same goal. This is what will push your project to the next level. Show appreciation and it just keeps coming. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You don’t have to do everything alone, but there is a great deal of pride and power to be mined in solo efforts for the next week or so. As you take on greater responsibilities and expect yourself to do the lion’s share, you’ll build your own trust and your ability to succeed on your own merits. The seeds of power take root. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). One way would be to go on thinking that everything will be so good very soon, and all you have to do is hang in there and try not to worry. But that way is a robber. It steals from you all that’s happening now, which is the moment of opportunity. What’s good, beautiful or fascinating now? What action can be taken now? LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You might miss, but you’ll never know if you don’t take your shot. Also, in this week’s case, no one will tell you it’s your turn. There will be no flashing light, no crossing guard, no number called that matches the one on your ticket. Keep your eyes open. Be ready for the opening; look both ways, and when it’s clear, go! SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Quite often, you don’t realize what you need until you’re not getting it. So learning will occur as it usually does: through mistakes and mishaps. It’s hard to see these occurrences as blessings, but of course they are hugely beneficial, even essential, to living your best life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Undiscovered truths have power, and so do undiscovered lies. Just as the heat from the earth’s interior causes the tectonic plates to move (and makes for earthquakes and volcanoes along the way), the energy of information plays out in our lives in eventful ways, both predictable and unpredictable. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Inventors create things that didn’t exist before. Innovators improve upon, or create new uses for, what already exists. This week you’ll do both, in big and small ways. This is the given. What’s uncertain is who will get the credit. It’s why it will be important to keep track of what happens with documentation. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). What is commonly assumed to be a design is often not a design at all; rather, it’s the product of a series of adaptations -- changes made to take advantage of an opportunity or to defend or flee from a threat. You’ve adapted to your environment, too, and you’re different because of it. One change is solidifying now. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Social science suggests that it only takes about seven seconds to form a first impression. You’ll probably do it in half that this week! Your intuition is working harder in order to compensate for information that’s not getting to you as fast as you’d like. A big opportunity can be safely determined with your gut.
