OUTDOOR DINING

Sunset Views

Outdoor eateries made for the summer season

O

utdoor dining on Long Island usually comes with stunning sunsets and water views while dining in New York City means rooftop bars and scenic vistas of skyscrapers and skylines. Before summer comes to a close, make a reservation at these eateries.

SALT 3100 Whaleneck Dr., Merrick 516-442-7470 www.saltonthewater.com

Smuggler Jack’s 157 Forest Ave., Massapequa 516-798-6000 www.smugglerjacks.com

Head to SALT for lunch on a perfect summer day and munch on a watermelon and feta salad, fish tacos, coconut shrimp, poke bowls, sandwiches, surf and turf and, of course, a delectable lobster roll. Take in waterfront views of the south shore during the day or at night as you imbibe cocktails with friends. —Jennifer Fauci

Whether you stock up on oysters at the raw bar, enjoy melt-in-yourmouth tuna, mahi mahi or salmon or tuck into a spicy and kickin’ bayou pasta or lobster truffle mac ’n’ cheese, Smuggler Jack’s is a great eatery for locals and visitors alike. The casual waterfront establishment specializes in American fare and draws in locals with a late-night bar as the perfect hangout spot for summer evenings.

H

ave you ever wanted to fly through the air and try something that’ll make your heart race with excitement? Now’s the chance to do so with I.FLY Trapeze. I.FLY is known for its unique full-time flying trapeze and circus arts program and now has two active locations on Long Island, including one at Eisenhower Park. Whether you are at a beginner or advanced skill level, the instructors at I.FLY will be able to teach you the tips and tricks of flying trapeze and all it has to offer. Adults of all ages and children from ages 4 and up can fly and have the experience of a lifetime. While at I.FLY, you have the option to participate in six-to-eight-week workshops, where you have the opportunity to master your flying ability on the trapeze. Also, lessons in static

trapeze, partner trapeze, lyra, silks and hammock are available. No matter what you choose to do at I.FLY, you are sure to experience something you have never tried before. First-time flyers can expect to learn about timing and technique when it comes to flying trapeze in their first session. At the beginning, there will be an introduction on the ground and then an instructor will give a demonstration in the air. After the demonstration, you get right to flying and practicing your form in the air. For returning flyers, the I.FLY instructors will teach you a whole new set of positions and tricks, while also helping you work on improving your current flying trapeze skill set. The flying trapeze program is very safe and well-monitored, according to the I.FLY website. All participants in the program fly with a harness, over a safety net and attached to safety lines being held by a trained

instructor at all times. Sessions are between one to two hours at a time and cost around $65 and up. Each session has five to 10 flyers in total and follows a format that will be completed regardless of the amount of time needed. On top of individual sessions, I.FLY has plenty of experience in dealing with large groups as well. The company has catered to troops, social groups, family picnics, corporate groups, birthdays and bachelorette parties. This summer, I.FLY is continuing

its program called Summer Circus for Kids, which is only available at the East Meadow location. For children ages 7 through 16, I.FLY offers an abundance of activities all compiled into one week sessions. Kids can participate in some activities such as flying trapeze, aerial trapeze, juggling, ground acrobatics and circus comedy. Each week ends with a show on Friday with all of the participants showcasing their skills in various disciplines. For more information, visit www. iflytrapeze.com.

August Movie Previews

The Kitchen (R) On Aug. 9, The Kitchen debuts, directed by Andrea Berloff in her directorial debut. The films stars Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Domhnall Gleeson. This movie is based on a comic book series of the same name written by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle. Fresh off her 2019 nomination for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, McCarthy once again proves she can do it all and is not limited to comedic roles. After their Irish gangster husbands get arrested, the wives decide they can keep up the business and their lifestyles. A must-see.

Fast & The Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (PG-13) Aug. 2 sees Fast & The Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw racing into theaters, directed by David Leitch and starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby and Helen Mirren. A spin-off of the ever popular The Fast and the Furious franchise, this story follows Hobbs (Johnson) and Shaw (Statham) attempting to put their hatred for one another aside so they can team up to stop a new threat from a cyber-genetically heightened terrorist, who, with his deadly virus, intends to destroy all of humanity. Where’d You Go Bernadette? (PG-13)

Brian Banks (PG-13) Also, on Aug. 9, Brian Banks rushes into theaters. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the film stars Aldis Hodge, Greg Kinnear and Sherri Shepherd. Based on true events, the movie follows a promising athlete with dreams of playing in the NFL when suddenly everything changes as he is falsely accused and convicted of rape. Years later, with the help of the California Innocence Project, he fights to clear his name and fulfill his dream.

Appearing in theaters on Aug. 16 is Where’d You Go Bernadette? directed by Richard Linklater and stars Cate Blanchett, Judy Greer, Kristen Wiig, Billy Crudup and Emma Nelson. It is based on the novel of the same name written by Maria Semple. Bernadette (Blanchett) hates many things and has sacrificed herself for the sake of her family. When suddenly she disappears, her daughter, Bee, sets out on a mission to find out where she is and what happened. A delightful mystery comedy. Where’d You Go Bernadette? (Photo source: IMDb.com)

Angel Has Fallen (NR) On Aug. 23, Angel Has Fallen shoots into theaters. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the film stars Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Piper Perabo and Jada Pinkett Smith. This is the third film that Butler and Freeman are reprising their roles from the Olympus Has Fallen series from 2013

and 2016. This time, Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Butler) is wrongly accused for the attempted assassination of the president. He must go undercover and evade his own agency and the FBI to prove his innocence and uncover the real threat. Just as action packed as the two films before.

Don’t Let Go (NR) Finally, on Aug. 30, Don’t Let Go creeps into theaters, directed and written by Jacob Aaron Estes. It stars David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Byron Mann and Mykelti Williamson. Detective Jack Radcliff’s (Oyelowo) family has seemingly been murdered yet he gets a call from his niece, who was one of the killed, and must decide if heB:8.7” is losing his mind or if he has a chance to save her before it happens. 1. To qualify for the advertised APY, you must enroll your new or existing Platinum Savings account in this offer between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 by speaking to a banker and requesting the special rate. Offer is subject to change at any time, without notice, and is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DE, FL, NJ, NY, PA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 1.98% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the promotional interest rate period. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes all deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.00%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000, the enrolled account will not be eligible for the Special Rate and will instead earn the applicable Standard Interest Rate for a Platinum Savings account. As of 05/31/2019, the Standard Interest Rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, FL, NJ and NY with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY); and for a Platinum Savings account in DE and PA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.05% (0.05% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.10% (0.10% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, then-current Standard Interest Rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. 2. Available in-branch only; you must speak with a banker to request the special rate. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 and requires a minimum of $25,000 in new money brought to Wells Fargo. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A penalty for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the special rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1., 2. Due to the new money requirement, new accounts may only be opened at your local branch and you must speak to a banker to request the special rate offers for both new and existing accounts. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be: • Combined with any other consumer deposit offer. • Reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable standard interest rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. BOOKS

Celebrating The Caesars And Charlie Hustle, Too BY JOE SCOTCHIE

I

jscotchie@antonmediagroup.com

n Ten Caesars, classicist Barry Strauss takes the reader through the high tide of the Roman Empire: the 350-plus year reign, from Augustus to Constantine. These brief, Plutarch-like sketches capture the unique character of each of the Caesars: Augustus, the teenage strongman who defined the role of an emperor for centuries to come; Tiberius, who ruled in luxury, while several thousand miles south of Rome, a Nazarene carpenter changed the course of history; Nero, the homicidal madman; there is Hadrian and his wall, Marcus Aurelius, as popular as ever and finally, Constantine, who ended the 300-year long persecution of the empire’s Christians. Strauss lauds the Caesars for their survival instincts but mourns the passing of Rome and applauds the establishment of the Eastern Empire, which later fell.

However, the world of the Caesars led to the world of monarchy. A republic is preferable to an empire, but a monarchy is preferable to both. The Largesse of The Sea Maiden was the final collection of short stories by Denis Johnson, the prolific American novelist who died last year at age 67. As with Wallace Stegner, Edward Abbey and Chilton Williamson, Jr., Johnson sang of the hard-boiled West: working-class men scrambling to stay one foot ahead of the grave. Characters are constantly trapped in those do-ordie decisions that shape their fate. Johnson will be missed, but he left behind streams of fine fiction for the rest of us to enjoy.

Jim Sciutto’s The Shadow War recalls the 1950s when Russia and China were communist giants and the U.S. caught up in “duck and cover” drills over a nuclear attack by either or both. Times have changed dramatically. Russia and China are not in an alliance. Still, both challenge American hegemony, which looks to be in decline, anyway. Sciutto lists the usual concerns: hacking American elections, cyber warfare, espionage and bold military actions. Russia matters, but the rivalry of the 21st century is between the U.S. and China. When Mao Tse-Tung’s rebels took control in 1949, they

immediately embarked on a 100-year plan to make China as the world’s economic and military superpower. What will happen if China does overtake the United States? Another Pete Rose book? Why not? Has there been a major leaguer who loved the game as much as Charley Hustle? Rose is still coming to terms with his banishment from the game for gambling and the realization that he will never be selected to the Hall of Fame, at least not in his lifetime. Play Hungry: The Making of A Baseball Player is very much a love letter from Rose to his father, a legendary semi-pro athlete in Cincinnati. Not since Babe Ruth has a man put his stamp on the game the way Rose did. This book would be perfect for the budding young ballplayer, if not for the language, but this brisk volume is one of the best books about baseball that you’ll ever read. There will never be another Pete Rose.

This Summer, Go Blonde! Legally Blonde the Musical debuts at The Argyle

ased on the 2001 film of the same name, Legally Blonde The Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal! Elle Woods, the iconic character originally portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, is played by Aussie actress Kirby Lunn. “Legally Blonde is about a woman who gets broken up with so she decides to follow this guy all the way to Harvard Law,” Lunn said. “And by doing this she learns the gift of working hard, and that she’s so much more than she ever thought she could be.” Lunn first appeared on the Argyle stage as Amber Von Tussle in last year’s production of Hairspray. Most recently she could

be seen in the North American tour of Kinky Boots. “I don’t think there’s a single song I’m not on stage for,” she said. “I don’t know any other female role, if not any other role in musical theater, that requires someone to be so vocally, emotionally and physically present.” “The great entry point for this story specifically is its humor,” said Tyler Miclean, who plays Emmett Forrest. “They’re able to get these ideas through so clearly and so well because it’s very, very funny.” Jordan Litz plays Warner Huntington III, the character who breaks up with Elle Woods and spurs her journey to Harvard Law. “I think he does truly love Elle,” Litz said, “but his parents, they want him to be a senator and this world leading man that I don’t think he actually wants to be.” Hairdresser Paulette, famously played by Jennifer Coolidge on film, is played by Jill Taylor Anthony.

“She meets Elle in her salon when Elle thinks she needs to change herself in order to get a guy,” Anthony explained. “And I get to say, ‘no way. If he doesn’t want you that way, then you don’t need him.’” Though Legally Blonde came out nearly 20 years ago, David Engel, who plays Professor Callahan, finds the story relevant to today’s audiences. “It’s incredibly fresh...and it does

resonate now more than ever,” Engel said. “The audience may think they know Legally Blonde, but this is just a different take. I think it’s so smartly written and it’s so, so entertaining.” See Legally Blonde the Musical through Aug. 25 at The Argyle Theatre, 34 West Main St., Babylon. f Ice Cream a few others, but I can’t mention those yet because we’re still in talks.” With nut and other food allergies becoming an increasing concern, a la mode is made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the Bronx where there is absolutely no chance of a la mode’s products being compromised with any nut dust or trace amounts of eggs or sesame seeds. “The fact that we’re the only manufacturing facility in the country that’s nut-free, egg-free and sesame-free [is unique],” said Marc. “We do dairy-free as well, so it’s safe. It’s the only safe product. That’s what differentiates us and makes us unique from other brands. We’re also super premium ice cream. So we are 60 percent low fat. That doesn’t make us unique, but the fact that we are able to have a super-premium ice cream that is safe without comprising flavor and taste, that helps us get to where we are now.” A la mode to date has done little advertising with much of the company’s success coming from word-ofmouth within the allergy community.
