ong Islanders are not strangers to the many shopping malls that stand across the 118 mile stretch of land we call home. Shopping, just like bragging about how our bagels are better than anywhere else’s, is a hobby much enjoyed, especially in the summer. While Roosevelt Field, the 10th largest mall in America, by the way, may be Nassau County’s shopping mecca, it is entirely enclosed. With warm weather already upon us, treat yourself to a day of shopping, but enjoy it somewhere where you can enjoy the fresh air and the pleasure of feeling the sun’s heat on your skin.
Woodbury Commons
Woodbury Rd. and Jericho Tpke., Woodbury This underrated shopping center on Jericho Turnpike houses more than just clothing stores like Athleta and Chico’s. You can enjoy a salad at Chopt and then sweat it out at SoulCycle or ROCK Pilates. For a bigger selection of shopping, take a longer drive to Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley, NY.

Beachin’ Reads BY CHRISTY HINKO
CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
W
ith tons of great options to choose from on the bookshelves and tons more coming up just in time for beach season, here are some of our top picks for can’t-put-down beach reads.
The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand Fiction, June 19 (Little, Brown and Company) It’s Nantucket wedding season, aka summer, and the sight of a bride racing down Main Street is as common as the sun setting at Madaket Beach. The Otis-Winbury wedding promises to be an event to remember: the groom’s wealthy parents have spared no expense to host a lavish ceremony at their oceanfront estate.
This Is Me by Chrissy Metz Memoir, March 27 (Dey Street Books) Much more than your standard Hollywood memoir, Chrissy Metz (This Is Us) opens up about her childhood, abusive relationship with her stepfather, struggle with her body image and how she came to love herself. Bottom line: Chrissy Metz just loves making us cry.
Tangerine by Christine Mangan Historical Fiction, March 27 (Ecco) The last person Alice Shipley expected to see since arriving in Tangier with her new husband was Lucy Mason. After the accident at Bennington, the two friends—once inseparable roommates—haven’t spoken in over a year. But there Lucy was, trying to make things right and return to their old rhythms. Perhaps Alice should be happy. She has not adjusted to life in Morocco, too afraid to venture out into the bustling medinas and oppressive heat. Lucy—always fearless and independent—helps Alice emerge from her flat and explore the country. Optioned for film by George Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures, with Scarlett Johansson to star.
When Life Gives You Lululemons by Laura Weisberger Humor, June 5 (Simon & Schuster) Welcome to Greenwich, CT, where the lawns and the women are perfectly manicured, the Tito’s and sodas are extra strong, and everyone has something to say about the infamous new neighbor. Let’s be clear: Emily Charlton does not do the suburbs. After leaving Miranda Priestly, she’s been working in Hollywood as an image consultant to the stars, but recently, Emily’s lost a few clients. She’s hopeless with social media. The new guard is nipping at her heels. She needs a big opportunity, and she needs it now.

Faith Frank, dazzlingly persuasive and elegant at sixty-three, has been a central pillar of the women’s movement for decades, a figure who inspires others to influence the world. It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Love and Ruin by Paula McClain Historical Fiction, May 1 (Ballantine) In 1937, 28-year-old Martha Gellhorn travels alone to Madrid to report on the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War and becomes drawn to the stories of ordinary people caught in the devastating conflict. It’s the adventure she’s been looking for and her chance to prove herself a worthy journalist in a field dominated by men. After she bottoms out in Phoenix, her sister in Los Angeles insists Lucy dog-sit for the summer. They are so confident that they are distributing a few of them prior to the official start of June 18. Take a break from the heat and catch one of these exciting flicks. The following are just a few to choose from this summer.
Crazy Rich Asians (PG-13)
On Aug. 17, the film Crazy Rich Asians debuts, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan and Ken Jeong. This movie is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan. The hilarious comedy follows boyfriend and girlfriend Rachel and Nick, both NYU professors who travel to Singapore to meet Nick’s family. Unbeknownst to
Ocean’s 8 (PG-13) June 8 sees the premiere of Ocean’s 8, which received a lot of buzz since the announcement of an all-female cast. Gary Ross directs Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson and Awkafina. A direct spin-off from the Ocean’s trilogy starring George Clooney, this story follows Danny Ocean’s estranged sister, Debbie Ocean, as she gathers a crew to steal a major item from the star studded Met Gala held annually in New York City. This action-comedy is a must see.
Mission: Impossible Fallout (NR)
Rachel, Nick’s family is one of the wealthiest families in Asia and they don’t necessarily think she is good enough for him. A great film to destress with.
Replicas (PG-13) Aug. 24 sees the release of Replicas, directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff and starring Keanu Reeves, Alice Eve, Thomas Middleditch and Emily Alyn Lind. Reeves stars as a scientist who loses his family in a car accident and does everything possible, legally or not, to bring Incredibles 2 (PG) them back to life. A scary thriller, which Reeves excels The animated feature debuts on at. This one will keep you June 15, directed on the edge of and written your seats. by Brad Bird who also did the same for the first Incredibles movie. Holly Hunter, Craig T. Hitting theaters July 27 is Mission: Impossible-Fallout, which is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan and Angela Basset. This is Cruise’s sixth turn as Ethan Hunt as he and his team must regroup after a failed mission threatens the world. This time not only enemies but former allies hunt him down, assuming wrongly that his loyalty may be in question. This is what Cruise does best and it is sure to win at the box office.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (NR) July 6 sees the debut of Ant-Man and the Wasp, a sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man. Peyton Reed directs with Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer and Michael Douglas starring. Hope Van Dyne aka the Wasp and her father (played by Douglas) team up once again to fight for goodness while protecting their loved ones. Sure to be just as funny as the first one.

Escape The Heat: TV Binges BY ANTHONY MURRAY
AMURRAY@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
S
ummertime is right around the corner. Why go out and have some fun in the sweltering heat when you can stay inside a nice air conditioned room and binge out on some of the year’s hottest shows? Here are some suggestions for those who just want to Netflix and chill out.
HBO’s Barry follows former United States marine Barry Berkman who is played by comedian and Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader, who works as a low-rent hitman in the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied with his life, Berkman travels to Los Angeles to kill someone but ultimately ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the Los Angeles theater scene. Season one consists of only eight episodes, an easy challenge for all the hardcore bingers out there. Barry was recently renewed for a second season. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix is another good show to binge. The web television sitcom follows 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt—played by Ellie Kemper—as she adjusts to life in New York City after her rescue from a doomsday cult in the fictional town of Durnsville, IN. The overtly positive Schmidt quickly befriends her street-wise landlady Lillian Kaushtupper, finds a roommate in struggling actor Titus Andromedon and gains a job as a nanny for the melancholy and outof-touch socialite Jacqueline Voorhees. The show just recently ended its four season run on the streaming service.
Also on Showtime is the comedy-drama Shameless, which stars William H. Macy who plays Frank Gallagher. As a single father of six children, Gallagher spends his days in a drunken stupor when he’s not searching for misadventures while his kids learn how to take care of themselves. The British remake has been renewed for a ninth season, which will make it the longest-running original scripted series in Showtime’s history.
For those who have a passion for anything British or royal, the award-winning historical drama The Crown, can also be found on Netflix. The show traces the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in 1947 through to the present day. Each season of the show covers a different period of Queen Elizabeth’s life. The Crown has already been renewed by Netflix for a third and fourth season, which the former slated to premiere in 2019. The show is intended to last 60 episodes over a six season span, with 10 one-hour episodes per season. If being scared out of your mind is something that you enjoy, then Netflix’s Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist is a good choice. Evil Genius is a true crime docuseries about the murder of Brian Wells, a high-profile 2003 incident often referred to as the “collar bomb” or “pizza bomber” case. It was released on Netflix as a four-part series last month. Billions is another binge worthy show. The television drama is loosely based on the activities of crusading federal prosecutor of financial crimes Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and his legal battles with hedge fund manager Steve Cohen of S.A.C. Capital Advisors. In the second season, Billions loosely incorporates the cases involving the Treasury bond auction market manipulation conduct of the Salomon Brothers in 1991. Both Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis star in the Showtime show, which was just renewed for a fourth season.
Lastly, Showtime’s Homeland—the popular American spy thriller follows the missions of bipolar CIA officer Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes) and U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper Nicholas Brody (played by Damian Lewis). Mathison comes to believe that Brody, who was held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war, has been “turned” by the enemy and poses a threat to the country. Homeland focuses on a storyline that evolves from this premise, together with Mathison’s ongoing covert work. The show will end next year after its eighth season. itting on the front deck sun pads of the Cobalt 46, one may gaze out across the bay, spying the blue sky that seems to alter color as it touches Manhasset Bay’s gentle wake, and feel a sense of serenity that only the quiet of slowly pulling out of Inspiration Wharf may bring. As the Long Island Boat Rentals charter yacht picks up speed, one might want to head to the seat situated on the bow to feel the wind in their hair or take in the views of the New York City skyline to the left and the greenery of the Port Washington coast to the right. The luxury express yacht cruiser, complete with two full cabins, a hydraulic swim platform for easy access to the water, a barbecue grill in the cockpit and surround sound stereos, is one of the five rental boats that Long Island Boat Rentals offers to get residents and tourists out on the water in Port Washington.

“We’re trying to make the water easily accessible to anybody,” said Long Island Boat Rentals principal William Gordon. “People move to Port Washington for the water and then they never go out on it. The typical concept is that they want to go out on the water but don’t know how to get out on
California who had a sailboat that he would share with others. After being able to jump on the boat, go sailing, dock and get off without having to complete any maintenance or fuel the boat up, Gordon was impressed. However, it wasn’t until 2013 that Gordon decided to purchase Long Island Boat Rentals
The Cobalt 46 the water because they don’t have a boat and don’t know how to drive one. This is a necessary service in Port Washington to get people engaged in the water, but we bring people from all over the island and the tri-state area.” Gordon realized boat rentals were a thriving business when he went to visit a friend in
from the previous owner for his son, Christian. “Being given the business was really cool, but I didn’t even have time to think about it,” explained Christian. “I’m enjoying it. I’m learning so much about the ins and outs of business and marketing. I learned them at school but now
I have to apply it to something I know so well. Sometimes it’s easy, but it’s also hard because I can’t offer an outside perspective. I’ve been boating my whole life and I had the opportunity to grow up under my dad who has been boating his whole life so it’s kind of something that gets passed down from generation to generation.” Before jumping on a boat, clients must either show Christian their competence of navigating the waters; take the accelerated safe powerboat handling or individual powerboat lessons offered by Long Island Boat Rentals; or pay the additional $50 an hour for a captain to accompany them out onto the waters. Christian explained that many renters enjoy having a captain because they don’t have to focus on driving the boat and can fully relax while the captain adds to the experience by sharing information about the area. “I feel like I really get to know people when I go out with them on the water because they’re in a very comfortable environment,” said Christian. While some use Long Island Boat Rentals as a unique opportunity to entertain business

Cruise To A Plethora Of Places
Cruisin’ on Manhasset Bay from page 26A clients, create a bonding experience between employees or propose to their future spouse, many use the company to sail around the bay for four to six hours to fish or simply take in the views of Sands Point and the exquisite homes it has to offer, similar to those in The Great Gatsby or the home used to film scenes in The Wolf of Wall Street. Long Island Boat Rentals operates from mid-April to late October, giving renters the perfect excuse to play hooky from work and bringing the people of Port Washington and the tri-state area the ability to get out onto the water to explore the areas around them. “When people come out I ask what they would like to do, what they would like to see,” said Christian. “Would you like to just get out on the water and spend quality time with your friends or would you like to explore
Christian and William Gordon on the Cobalt. (Photos by Alex Nuñez) new places? Some people just want to be on the water. On Friday nights, people will do a dinner cruise and then they’ll catch the fireworks at Rye Playland Park on the way back. People love to go to Prime in Huntington for dinner and I take them to Oyster Bay or Greenwich, CT.” Along with the company’s daily rental service, Long Island Boat Rentals recently began offering a commuter
service to help residents skip traffic with a relaxing boat ride. Christian is looking to expand the commuter service by offering packages to Mets games, so residents can ride over to Citi Field, watch a matinée game and then get a scenic ride back. “I took people to a bunch of the concerts at Citi Field, so instead of renting a taxi or taking the train, we picked them up in Glen Cove and took them for a two hour pre-concert boat ride and dropped them off,” said Christian. “You can dock your boat cheaper than you can park your car. We want people to be spontaneous.” Long Island Boat Rentals offers a variety of opportunities to get out on the water in Port Washington. “We’re 20 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but you can get out here and feel like you’re somewhere else,” said Christian.
New York, NY
A 40-minute ride on a Long Island Boat Rental can get renters a trip around to the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan, allowing for breathtaking views of the skyline and bridges.
Jersey City, NJ
Christian usually takes locals over to the Liberty House in Jersey City where they get a view of the downtown Manhattan skyline while grabbing a bite to eat or taking in the scenic sights of Liberty State Park.
City Island, NY
On a hot summer day or even a cool September afternoon, take five friends and head to the City Island Lobster House for three hours for a lobster tail plate or some jumbo shrimp scampi.
Connecticut
Hop on a boat rental for 50 minutes to Greenwich or an hour to Stamford’s waterfront. While in Greenwich, one can explore multiple parks and beaches; Stamford has rows of restaurants to offer including their own Prime restaurant.
Mamaroneck, NY
Mamaroneck is the perfect place for an adventure because boaters can dock and walk into town to visit restaurants like Bar Harbor Grill or Sedona Tap House.

on’t be shellfish this summer. Sharing the bounty of the sea in the form of crab, lobster, mussels, oysters, clams and shrimp are the highlight of summer clambakes and cookouts. Your favorite chefs think so, too. Anne Burrell, Judy Joo and Fred’s at Barney’s New York Downtown have rounded up their favorite shrimp dishes, perfect for the summer. Poppable, portable and altogether delicious, these simple shrimp dishes will be a hit at any barbecue this season. Fried Shrimp with Garlicky Hot Pepper Sauce From Judy Joo’s Book Korean Food Made Simple Serves 4
“This classic Korean-Chinese dish is a more grown-up version of sweet-and-sour shrimp. The shrimp is battered and fried and then enrobed in a spicy, garlicky, pungent sauce, free of the distraction of vegetables. With its somewhat familiar tomato-accented sauce, it’s more similar to Chinese sweet-and-sour takeout than its cousin, sweet-and-sour beef.” 1 tsp plus 1 Tbsp vegetable oil, plus more for frying ½ cup plus 1 tsp cornstarch ½ cup potato starch ½ tsp baking soda Kosher salt or sea salt 1 large egg white 1½ lbs large shrimp, peeled, deveined, and patted dry
3 Tbsp sugar 4½ tsp tomato paste 1 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp rice vinegar 1 tsp gochujang (Korean chile paste), Sriracha, chile sauce, or chile-garlic sauce 1 tsp toasted sesame oil 3 Tbsp diced onion 6 cloves garlic, grated or minced 1 fresh Korean red chile or Fresno chile, diced 1 fresh Korean green chile or jalapeno, diced Handful of scallions, thinly sliced on an angle Steamed white rice for serving 1. Egg Custards with Shrimp From Judy Joo’s Book Korean Food Made Simple Serves 4 “These silky, light, and super-easy egg custards are good on their own and even better topped with sweet shrimp and sliced scallions. Take care not to overcook these, as the texture can become tough and dry.” 8 large eggs 2 cups chicken stock 2 tsp fish sauce ½ tsp kosher salt or sea salt 8 small shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 scallion, thinly sliced on an angle

375 degrees F. While the oil is heating, in a large bowl, whisk together ½ cup of the cornstarch, the potato starch, baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Add the egg white, 1 teaspoon of the vegetable oil, and ½ cup water and whisk until a thick batter forms. 2. Working in batches, coat the shrimp in the batter, letting any excess drip into the bowl. Slip the shrimp into the oil, one piece at a time, and fry, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 1½ minutes. Transfer to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining shrimp, letting the oil return to 375 degrees F 1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, stock, fish sauce, and salt. Pour the mixture into four 10-ounce heatproof bowls or ramekins. Arrange the bowls in a large wide pot with a lid. Add enough boiling water to the pot to reach two thirds of the way up the sides of the bowls. Bring the water to a gentle simmer, cover the pot, and steam until the custards are slightly wobbly in the center, 6 to 7 minutes. 2. Divide the shrimp and scallion among the bowls, cover, and steam until the shrimp are cooked through and the custards are set, about 3 minutes more. 3. Top the custards with a drizzle of sesame oil and a sprinkle of sesame seeds and serve warm
Fried Shrimp with Garlicky Hot Pepper Sauce between batches. 3. When all the shrimp have been fried, let the oil return to 375 degrees F, and then carefully return all the shrimp to the oil and fry a second time until very crisp, 1½ to 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain. Set the fried shrimp aside. 4. In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar, tomato paste, soy sauce, vinegar, chile paste, sesame oil, remaining 1 teaspoon cornstarch, and ¼ cup water until the sugar has dissolved. Set the sauce mixture aside.
Tomato Salad with Shrimp and Black Volcanic Sea Salt By Anne Burrell Serves 4 to 6
“When I was in Hawaii I had this version of a tomato salad with shrimp and volcanic salt, and it was amazing. First of all, it looks beautiful-the red tomatoes, pink shrimp, and inky black crystals on top are a vision of delightfulness. Then you take that first bite and the little salt crystals give up their crunchy, oceanic, mineraly salinity.” Extra virgin olive oil 4 cloves garlic, smashed Crushed red pepper 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined Kosher salt

Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until golden. Add the calamari and octopus and cook, stirring, until the calamari starts to turn opaque, about 3 minutes. Add the clams and mussels and cook 1 minute. 2. Add the tomato, wine, oregano, hot red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well, bring to a simmer, and simmer about 4 minutes, until the shellfish start to open and the sauce has thickened slightly. 3. Next, add the pasta to the boiling water, stir well, and cover
until it returns to the boil. Uncover and boil until just tender to the bite all the way through. 4. Add the shrimp and scallops to the sauce, mix well, and simmer about 2 minutes, until the shrimp and scallops are just cooked through. If the sauce seems too thick, add a few tablespoons of pasta cooking water. When the pasta is cooked, drain it well and add it to the sauce. Toss well and serve immediately. If desired, arrange on a serving platter with the mussel and clam shells around the rim.

A Farmer’s Heirloom A fresh ingredient straight from the garden By Steve Mosco
516-883-2159
Thank goodness for fanatical seed savers. Sometime before the 1930s, an opportunistic farmer somewhere in America noticed a plant was producing a tomato that was uniform in shape and color. The rounded shape made shipping the fruit a breeze and the all-red color was more enticing to customers’ eyes. So, after agricultural experiments, a new tomato variety containing this “uniform ripening” mutation was released—they dubbed it, All Red. But breeding uniformity into tomatoes had the unfortunate side effect of sucking out all the flavor. Now the bulk of tomatoes we eat today pale in comparison to the tomatoes of a century ago. Because we demanded tomatoes outside of the traditional season of June through October, and ones more cost-effective to ship, what we’ve ended up with is a perfectly round and perfectly boring tomato with bland flavor, along with a plastic exterior and a Styrofoam-esque interior.
Here’s where those fanatical seed savers come into play. As if they split open a tomato and saw the bleak future, some growers saved seeds for generations, giving us heirloom tomatoes. These antique strains of the fruit and/or vegetable create tomatoes of various colors and sizes, with unsightly bulges, striking shades and the taste of a real tomato. And varieties go beyond Beefsteak or cherry or plum. Heirloom tomatoes boast cool names like Black Krim, Amy’s Super Gem and Dixie Golden Giant. They can be found at farmers’ markets or local grocery stores with expanded produce sections—or, for more agricultural individuals, seeds can be purchased online for home growing. As an ingredient in dishes, heirloom tomatoes easily replace the mass-cultivated versions. A garden-fresh bruschetta atop crusty bread or grilled chicken blatantly displays the array of heirloom tomatoes, while Burrata and Caprese salads are taken to
far more flavorful levels when heirlooms are used in the dish’s recipe. While replacing canned tomatoes with heirlooms in your Sunday sauce is a daunting task, your ancestors would be proud of your homemade, from-scratch efforts. A classic heirloom tomato sauce with fresh basil is a deep-flavored and fresh take on the all-day simmering pot. And the health benefits attributed to tomatoes are numerous. They are a rich source of antioxidants, including lycopene, an antioxidant that is highly effective in scavenging cancer-causing free radicals, while also exerting a protective effect against cardiovascular diseases. Tomatoes are also a tremendous source of vitamins C and A, along with iron and potassium. Dig a little deeper at the market and when you pull out those weird, bumpy tomatoes, say a quiet “thank you” to the seed savers.

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Looking to improve your travel photography? I’ve spent the last five years shooting photos in exotic locations around the world, and these are my favorite travel photography tips. Some people collect souvenirs when they travel, I prefer to collect beautiful images with my camera. Travel photography is like a time machine, freezing memories from a journey that you can look back on and enjoy for years.

Every travel destination has its own look, culture, history, people, feelings, landscapes and stories. Learning how to capture these subjects through photos helps convey the spirit of a place to others, giving them a glimpse of what it might be like to venture there. I never went to school for photography. And yet here I am now, making my living as a professional travel blogger and photographer who regularly licenses images to tourism boards, brands and occasionally glossy magazines. I’ve slowly learned the techniques of travel photography over years of reading books, watching online tutorials and regular practice to improve my craft. You can learn this way too, if you put in the effort. Here are my favorite travel photography tips to improve your images.

Wake Up Early, Stay Out Late
The early bird gets the worm. I’m sure you’ve heard that phrase. Well it’s also very true for travel photography. Light is the most important ingredient for great photography—and soft, warm, morning light creates amazing images.
from page 37A
Pre-Trip Location Scouting
Read travel guidebooks about your destination. Scour the internet for articles and blog posts to help give you ideas for photos. Talk to friends who have been there. Reach out to other photographers. Become more knowledgeable about which images will capture the essence of a place.
Talk To People
Photographing local people in a foreign country is tough for many photographers. What if they don’t understand you? What if they say no? Will they get offended? It took me a couple years to get comfortable shooting portraits of locals, and even now I still get a bit nervous.
Experiment With Composition
You can almost always come up with a better photo composition after some experimentation. Sure, take that first shot standing up straight. But then try laying on the ground for a low angle. Maybe climb up something nearby and shoot from a higher angle.

Use A Tripod
software is “cheating.” Let’s clear that up right now. All professional photographers edit their digital images using software like Lightroom, Photoshop, or GIMP.
I think more people should be using lightweight travel tripods. A tripod allows you to set your camera position and keep it there. With the camera fixed, you can then take your time arranging the perfect composition.
16
Don’t Obsess Over Equipment
6
Rule Of Thirds
If you went out and bought all of the photography gear I use, not only would it be super expensive, I guarantee it won’t improve your photography skills. Start with the basics and leave the 12-set of lenses at home.
One of the most basic and classic of photography tips, understanding the Rule of Thirds will help you create more balanced compositions. Imagine breaking an image down into thirds horizontally and vertically, so it’s split into different sections.
17
Never Stop Learning
7
Make Photography A Priority
Attempting to take quick snapshots as you rush from one location to another will leave you with the same boring photos everyone else has. Make sure you plan “photography time” into your travel schedule. Good travel photography requires a solid time commitment on your part.
8
The Human Element
People like to live vicariously through human subjects in photos. Especially if the viewer can pretend the person in the photo is them. It adds more emotion to an image, you feel like you’re experiencing the location yourself.
9
Patience Is Everything
Photography is about really seeing what’s in front of you. Not just with your eyes, but with your heart and mind too. This requires dedicated time and attention. Slow down and make a conscious effort at becoming aware of your surroundings before pressing the shutter.
10
Protect Against Theft
Ok, this one is slightly off topic, but I think it’s important too. Cameras are small expensive products. As such, they’re a prime target for theft while traveling. I’ve heard
many sad theft stories from other travelers. Luckily I’ve never had my camera stolen, but I also take precautions against it.
11
Shoot In Manual Mode
You’d think that modern cameras are smart enough to take incredible pictures on their own, in auto mode. Well that’s just not the case. While they do a pretty good job, if you want truly stunning images, you need to learn how to manually control your camera’s settings yourself.
of your travel photos. When my laptop computer was stolen once in Panama, backups of my photography saved the day.
15
Post Processing
There is a ridiculous myth out there that editing your photos using
Enroll in some online photography tutorials. Invest in a travel photography workshop. Go out and practice on a regular basis. This is how you get better—not because you have the latest gear or use popular Instagram filters. Visit Matthew Karsten’s website (expertvagabond.com/travel-photography-tips) for the full version of these tips, including more about photography and his travels and adventures.
STAY • EAT • PLAY
12
Always Bring A Camera
There is a saying in photography that “the best camera is the one you have with you.” Be ready for anything, and always carry a camera around, because luck plays a pretty key role in travel photography.
13
Get Lost On Purpose
OK. You’ve visited all the popular photography sites, and captured your own version of a destination’s postcard photos. Now what? It’s time to go exploring, and get off the beaten tourist path. It’s time to get lost on purpose.
14
Backup Your Photos
Along with camera insurance, I can’t stress enough the importance of both physical and online backups

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS
BEST BEACHES from page 36A Best for Kids: Nickerson Beach Park
880 Lido Blvd., Lido Beach Kids of all ages will enjoy the many activities offered at Nickerson Beach from free family movie nights offered on Sundays to a fully equipped “Fun Zone.” Located by the sand dunes, children will enjoy the views of the sea while safely playing in a fenced-in area to separate the older and younger kids. Children will never want to leave the traditional features of slides, swings and math walls. Older kids and teens will want to spend hours at the rock climbing wall, two pools with lifeguards, a skate park and a “Pitch and Putt.” Do not forget about the actual beach; there are areas designated for wildlife watching including the federally-protected Piping Plover.
Best for Pets: Port Jefferson Public Beach and Dog Park
Port Jefferson There is no need to keep furry friends on a leash at this beach. Dogs are free to roam without a
leash for the miles on this well-kept coastline with pick-up bags available by the beach entrances. The fun for pooches does not need to stop at the beach with many nearby restaurants that are also pet-friendly with their outdoor seating. No dog? No problem. This beach is also great for families looking to enjoy the day taking in the Smithtown Bay along with the passing dogs on the sand.
Best for Seniors: Robert Moses State Park 600 Robert Moses State Pkwy., Babylon The age of loved ones do not need to hinder a beach getaway, especially at Robert Moses State Park. This beach is handicapped accessible from all park entrances and beach wheelchair friendly. Beach wheelchairs are available for free on a first-come first serve basis at the park’s First Aid Offices. During the summer season, mobility mats are placed on the sand for an easier journey along the beach. The park also has a boardwalk and picnic areas or visitors can enjoy boogie boarding, surfing and swimming in the lifeguard protected areas. With fun for the whole family, this beach makes for a getaway.

WORD FIND

This is a theme puzzle with the subject stated below. Find the listed words in the grid. (They may run in any direction but always in a straight line. Some letters are used more than once.) Ring each word as you find it and when you have completed the puzzle, there will be 27 letters left over. They spell out the alternative theme of the puzzle.
ARIES (March 21-April 19). There’s usually a nicer way to say things. For most people, it’s not typically the first way that comes to mind. But with practice in the art of diplomacy and negotiation, it gets easier to find the words. Try, “What if we did it this way instead?” and “We can talk about that later; for now, what about this?” TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Success is simple. Picture how you want your life to be, and then start the planning phase. There’s a brainstorming session that belongs in there somewhere, too. Many ideas will at first seem nonlinear and irrational, but that doesn’t make them bad ideas. More is possible than you realize.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You wonder what your heroes would do if given your particular circumstances. While you may hypothetically ask, “What would (so-and-so) do?” you won’t follow through with any action other than the one that suits you. Though you’re curious and open-minded, the bottom line is that you think and act for yourself. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Those who don’t set up expectations will not be disappointed. But they also won’t be prepared. So consider what is likely to happen. Get more information. Ask questions. Look for patterns. Make predictions. There’s much about the week that can be won through a scientific approach.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Avoid mixing up the order that things happen in, because the order will make a big difference. For instance, you’re not happy because it’s perfect; it’s perfect because you’re happy. Also notable: In most instances this week, you’ll be happy mainly because you decided that was your mood. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It would be easier to be unaware, but that’s not you. You’re wide-awake. So you notice the small gestures and read meaning into them. When you don’t prefer the implication, then you have to decide how much it matters: Little enough to ignore it? To minimize the impact and move on? What would be the gracious choice? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). There are those who believe that others need to impress them to be worthy of their attention. This is not only a spiritually ungenerous manner but also an attitude that subtly influences others to perform, try, strive and be something other than what comes naturally. Exhausting! Refrain from any part of it! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). It all may seem a bit upside-down to you at times this week, but many upside-down things work just fine -- perhaps not for what they were intended, but for other things. So use your imagination. You’re more than creative enough to see the unexpected topsy-turviness as the opportunity it truly is. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The Sea-Monkeys advertised on the magazine pages seemed like smiling underwater aliens. When the package came in the mail and the directions were followed, the outcome, at the very best, was tiny live shrimp. But isn’t that still fascinating? The situation that plays out this week will follow a similar plotline. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). We hope that the truths of others align well with our own and typically see anything that threatens our beliefs as something to rectify. But is it? Through tolerance, those with different beliefs can coincide peacefully and better themselves through the compassion, tolerance and education that diversity offers.
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
Your willingness to embody the change you want to see in the world and in yourself -- this is your superpower. It will make all of the difference for you this year. It’s not a matter of becoming stronger and muscling through with willpower; rather, it’s a softness that’s needed. You’ll relax into a new mold, into a way of being that helps you get what you’re going for with great ease. There will be many group happenings this year, but three gatherings will be especially significant, altering the course of family and friends. Truly, you’re better for knowing and helping one another! COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). There’s an accomplishment in your past that is a treasure. There’s a disappointment in your past that’s a bitter pill. And this is the week to let go of both. It may not make sense, but the glory and the bitterness are both the same, which is to say, they’re both over. It’s time to begin the next chapter. Turn the page.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). People will defend value systems that are part of their identity regardless of the logic or correctness of those value systems. Be very careful when it comes to identifying yourself with external institutions. The opportunity to join will arise this week. Be thoughtful and slow in your affiliations, if you affiliate at all.
