hank you doesn’t seem to be an appreciative enough expression to extend gratitude for a wedding. How do a bride and groom “thank” their families, friends and everyone involved in the most special day of their life? Wedding favors of the past have evolved from matches and drink stirrers to wine and cupcakes. While many couples opt for a donation to their favorite charity instead of spending money on a trinket, others do like to send their guests home with a little something special.

What to choose Family owned and operated, Fairy Tale Affairs in Massapequa Park has been in the wedding business for the past 16 years. A double showroom on Merrick Road offers everything from invitations, decorations, rentals, and of course, favors. “We carry a wide array of favors,” said Tracey of Fairy Tale Affairs. “Some of our options include functional favors, edible favors, candles,

frames, personalized items, apparel and bar accessories.” While many favors can be used year round, some couples prefer to choose a favor that is not only practical, but fits the theme of their wedding. Popular spring and summer favors include anything beach or garden themed like potted plants with seeds, wine stoppers, soap, fans, flip flop bottle openers, honey or jam.

Make it personal To be unique, be sure to put a personal touch to your favor. Labels

bearing your wedding date, a monogram of your new initials or a thank you note is a simple way to add some love. Make sure you pick the right packaging if you are repackaging the favor yourself. Visit your local craft store for cardboard boxes, Chinese food boxes, mason jars and ribbon to tie it all together. Relating the gift to your wedding theme, color palette or who you are as a couple will make it all that more special.

A sweet donation “For our couples who wish to donate,

we provide a scroll with the charity information and a note of thanks,” said Tracey. “We roll it up and add confetti, almonds in a flower or tulle with chocolate as a thank you.” Fairy Tale Affairs is located at 4851 Merrick Rd., Massapequa Park. A Dreamy Beach Wedding

Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa is the perfect spot to say “I do” BY JENNIFER FAUCI

S

pring marks the beginning of wedding season, so from March to September, expect every florist, dress boutique and venue to be quite busy. If it has always been your dream to get married outside on Long Island, there are many options to choose from, but Gurney’s in Montauk takes the cake. With the ability to accommodate more than 300 guests, Gurney’s offers its ballroom, waterfront, beach, hotel, restaurant and rooftop for weddings and events where the sky meets the sea. “Gurney’s Montauk is a Hampton’s institution and the only four-season resort on Montauk,” said Juliana Marchini, director of sales for Gurney’s. “There is nothing more romantic than an ocean-front wedding.” As you prepare for a barefoot wedding on the beach, the entire bridal party can relax at the spa in the morning. If you still want to incorporate the beach but don’t want to chance the weather, Gurney’s beachside banquet hall can accommodate up to 220 guests for your affair. And you don’t have to worry about accommodations for out of town guests, as they can stay right on property at the hotel. “Gurney’s is a world class resort that provides a true destination wedding without the hassle of airline travel,” said Marchini on why the venue is different than others on the

island. “Guests are truly transported and enjoy a vacation like experience. As for reception decor, there are plenty of ideas to incorporate the season into your wedding. For a spring wedding, consider a color palette of pale pastels or bright vibrant pinks, greens purples and champagne. Get creative with place cards by using miniature potted plants or topiaries and go bigger with overflowing floral centerpieces surrounded by votive candles. Or, you can use lanterns inside a wreath of greenery over a burlap runner for a more rustic look. Spring

is fresh and light, so no matter what your theme or color scheme, your wedding should reflect the beauty of the season. Perhaps you’re saying “I do,” over the summer? Take advantage of the sun and sand when planning your wedding. Adorable mini Adirondack chairs can double as place card holders or picture frame favors, and don’t forget to scatter seashells around your tables. Blues, yellows, corals and navys are popular colors for summer, and paired with a bright, clean white, any of these colors will pop. Sand

filled wine stoppers, flip flop bottle openers, bamboo coasters or starfish paperweights are perfect favors to keep your guests dreaming about the beach on their drive home. Gurney’s has several wedding packages to choose from including a beach bonfire, lobster clambake and barbecue as well as a departure brunch the next morning. Although there are always packages and specials available, Gurney’s is on the more expensive side, but for a beach wedding on Long Island, you can’t beat the view. Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa is located at 290 Old Montauk Hwy, Montauk, NY. Call 631-668-2345 or visit www. gurneysmontauk.com.

TYME DIY hair for the big day BY CHRISTY HINKO

n my recent quest to find a versatile styling tool that was easy to use and did not cost a fortune, I found the titanium hair straightener and curling iron by TYME Hair through a friend’s recommendation while surfing Facebook. This got me thinking. I wanted to find out if

the TYME iron could be suitable to achieve do-it-yourself bridal hair, one of the moments in a girl’s life when she spends the most time and money on her hair. In my haste, the first time I used the TYME iron I did not achieve a curl and I was sure it would not do what it claimed. I was using it wrong. I went

TYME from page 6B back to the online tutorials before trying again. It worked and very well, I might add. During my 30-minute FaceTime session with TYME stylist Genevieve Koch, I learned even more about the iron and how to fix spots that did not curl initially, how to achieve a tighter or looser curl and how to avoid the techniques that were causing small pieces of hair to frizz. Starting with clean, dry hair, keeping the iron moving and perfecting the angle and pressure techniques are the things that I think are the most important tips for using the iron properly.

Three points that might make someone hesitant about this iron are that it does not automatically shut off, it has one unchangeable temperature (400 degrees) and the cost is $190. About the temperature: you can purchase a heat sleeve ($20) for use after you unplug the unit. The unit does have an on-off switch and the single temperature does kind of take the guesswork out of figuring out how hot the unit should be to achieve results. I highly suggest a heat-shield product, like TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray ($7, Target), to protect your hair from high-heat styling. During my virtual tutorial with Koch, she did also

highly recommend using a heatshield product. The cost...it’s expensive, said the girl who hasn’t purchased a curling iron since the 1990s and never spent more than $30 on styling gadgets. But a top-rated titanium curling iron will cost between $49 and $100. And a quality flat iron can run up to $200. The TYME iron is a two-in-one styling tool. There are also opportunities to purchase a reconditioned or a demo TYME iron at a lower cost. The TYME purchase also comes with a 30-day return policy, a one-year warranty and free tutorial videos. I cannot say enough about watching the online tutorials and

7B taking advantage of the personal, virtual styling assistance. The poor reviews that I have read all seem to point toward misuse and lack of patience. It does take time to learn how to use this styling tool so to you, the bridal consumer: I would say yes in general to the bride who wants a down-style with loose, beachy curls. “We have actually received a handful of women letting us know they used the iron or were going to use it for their weddings,” said Kendrick Reeg, president of sales for TYME Hair. “We know a few stylists around the country who do a ton of weddings and they love this iron because its super fast (usually 15-20 minutes each person if they have a lot of hair) and the curls last through the entire night because the iron actually cools the hair in place.” If hair perfection or a bridal up-do is what you are going for, then you should see your professional stylist and stick to your plan. Having said that, bring your TYME iron and give your stylist a go at your hair in the trial runs. You might find that you like what your stylist can do with the TYME iron. Visit www.tymehair.com to learn more about this unique styling tool.

FOOD

On Trend I BY JENNIFER FAUCI

JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

t’s a tale as old as time. The two things people take away from a wedding is the music and of course, the food. Not the painstaking details that go into picking the perfect invitation, color coordinating bridesmaid dresses to flowers or the ultimate wardrobe choice the bride has to make. People remember what you fed them. Food has become just as important as the wedding itself, a now paramount item on the checklist. But some guests expect more than just cocktail hour and dinner. Unique food stations, bars, food trucks and stands have been popping up pre- and post-reception as an extra way to make sure your guests’ bellies are nice and full. Cupcake Bar Many brides and grooms favor the popular Viennese hour to satisfy their sweet tooth, while others opt for a dessert bar. But few and far between have ever done a cupcake bar. John “JJ” and Karin Hlywiak of JJ’s Rockin’ Cupcakes in Massapequa lay claim to the first cupcake bar, where guests pick and choose their very own cupcake creation and watch it get made before their eyes. “Depending on the style of the bride and groom, we come with a table, linens and tiers and make it unique to them, but we always use mini cupcakes because those work best,” said Karin Hlywiak, wedding planner and owner of Cinderella4aDay. “The couple picks 4-5 flavors for the base of the cupcake and 5-6 frosting flavors. We also have a toppings bar with maraschino cherries, crushed peanuts, Oreo

crumbles, sprinkles, etc.” Hlywiak’s cupcake bar also offers a push-pop option, in which cake and ice cream is stuffed inside a push-pop for guests to take home, a unique twist on an ice-cream bar and perfect for a summer wedding. The cupcake bar ranges from $10-$14 per person.

Stations It’s a known fact that guests love the cocktail hour more than the sit down dinner. Brides and grooms have gotten creative with what foods are offered around the room and venues have taken notice. Some of the most popular specialty stations are the bacon bar, featuring different kinds of bacon with dipping sauces and toppings; the mashed potato bar with cheese, bacon, chives and sour cream to pile onto each creamy, potatoey spoonful and the adorable slider station to satisfy that juicy burger craving. Although many venues can accommodate a specialty station, it may come at an extra charge, so check with your banquet manager first.

hand out fresh jams, jellies or even honey as a favor.

Food Truck Ah, the food truck. People love food on wheels and what better time to get food from a truck than at a wedding. More popular after the night is over, food trucks have camped outside venues and offer everything from hot pretzels, churros and burgers, to hot chocolate, ice cream and Belgian waffles. Some trucks even come stocked with classic favorites like Taco Bell, White Castle and McDonalds. Spring and summer are probably the best times to have a food truck at your wedding as guests will be lining up outside. Chances are, they won’t mind waiting if the weather is nice to grab another bite for their ride home.

fter the bride says “yes,” she and her new groom-to-be get to ask another party a special question: Will you be my Maid of Honor/Best Man/Bridesmaid/ Groomsman? But saying “I do” to being in the bridal party is not as simple as it used to be. There is a lot of time, effort, money and stress involved in making sure your bride and groom have the perfect day and that every aspect of the journey leading up to the wedding runs smoothly. Etiquette expert Linda J. Williams provides helpful tips on how to be the best Maid of Honor (MOH)/Best Man/bridal party member you can be, and what to do if you really want to say “yes,” but can’t make it work. If you are asking someone to be in your bridal party, it is because they hold a special place in your life and you can’t imagine your wedding day without them standing up there next to you. According to Williams, there are two rules of etiquette that bridal

party members should keep in mind. “Remember that it is not your wedding. Be sensitive to honoring the wishes of the bride and groom.

You want their day to be as special and stress-free as possible,” she said. “Also, try to get along with the other members of the bridal party. You may not know each other or you may know each other but not get along. Do your best to be civil and polite to everyone for the sake of the bride and groom.” When accepting your invite to be a part of the wedding, it is paramount that you realize this will be a big expense. Bridesmaids are expected to pay for a dress, a bridal shower gift, bachelorette party, a wedding gift and usually hair and makeup the day of, while groomsmen are expected to pay for or rent a tux, help out with the bachelor party and give a wedding gift. Both sides are also expected to take off work or leave early for the rehearsal dinner, and of course, the

wedding day. “If you are asked to be in the bridal party and you have financial issues, be honest with the bride and groom,” said Williams. “You should be able to share your concerns, but this should not be your first response when asked to be in the bridal party. Graciously accept, then wait a few days and contact them with your concerns.” Some helpful tips for those who really want to be in the bridal party but are worried about cost can be a budget plan. Simply save a little each week. Chances are, the bride will look to find reasonably priced dresses and the bridal shower will be less than $100. As for the MOH and best man, it is their job first and foremost to put the bride and groom at ease, and keep

them away from any drama that may arise with any party planning or upsets among the group. This duo also serves as the witnesses to your marriage. “It should be the responsibility of the MOH and best man to meet with the bride and groom to find out what their wishes are and what their vision is for the members of the bridal party,” said Williams. “Do they only want the MOH and best man handling whatever duties they assign or can the MOH and best man delegate to members of the bridal party?”

Williams added that everyone should be made aware of what is expected of them as soon as possible so the plans and the wedding day go smoothly.
