Carle Place Celebrates Rich Past & Bright Future Built on community pride, Frog Hollow marks 100 years

BY BETSY ABRAHAM

BABRAHAM@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

This year, the bright hamlet of Carle Place celebrates its 100 year anniversary. The proud, tight-knit community has commemorated the momentous occasion with a kick-off party, carnival and movie night, and has several other events planned for later this year. Not many know the story behind Frog Hollow and the people who were instrumental in its founding. But the zealous and hardworking spirit of the community’s founders are still evident today in the current residents who are full of Carle Place pride. Carle Place’s history traces back to the 1800s, when a New York City merchant named Silas Carle—a descendant of the Hicks family and owner of a thriving pharmaceutical practice—purchased 220 acres of farmland in the rural area, wanting a reprieve from the hustle of city life for him and his wife. In 1835, he built a home on the land, which extended from across what is currently Jericho Turnpike to the Carle Place train station. The home soon became known for its beauty and known to local townspeople as “The Carle Place.” Though the estate was sold in 1883, the home still stands at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Old Westbury Road and is worth about $2.5 million. In the early 1900s, the Carle Place area was officially known as Mineola Park, but referred to by longtime residents as Frog Hollow, a nickname that came from the large population of bullfrogs in the area. The Carle Place Fire Department, originally known as Mineola Park Hook and Ladder Company No. 1, was established by 11 men in 1910. With horses and wagons, they moved a farm building from Old Westbury from the Treadwell estate to the Northeast corner of Rushmore and Westbury avenues. They rang the fire bell from that location and used a horse-drawn carriage that carried buckets of water and ladders to put out blazes. In 1915, at the urging of residents, the hamlet officially adopted the name Carle Place. That year also saw the formation of Carle Place’s first official school and establishment of the school district. Known as the Roslyn Avenue School, the building housed four classrooms with four teachers under the leadership of Principal Priscilla K. Archibold. She held the

He said that despite the development and population growth, the area is still pretty much the same as far as people go. According to him, the community revolves around the schools and the church, and that’s a good thing. “It’s a comfortable place to live and I love the feeling of community,” he said. “People feel so much for the area, it’s like a big family.” John Heslin, president of the Carle Place Senior Center and a resident of the area for 48 years, said a lot of businesses have come and gone over the years and now the area has seen a boom in restaurants. He said he’s happy to see so many young people moving to the community, a trend he hopes will continue. “The schools are bringing the young people back to the community,” Heslin said. “I want to see the community continue to grow like it is.” Whatever the next 100 years brings, there’s no doubt that Frog pride will continue to prevail and that the tightknit community will help preserve Carle Place as a great place to live.

Local Plates For The Global Palate BY LYN DOBRIN

WESTBURY@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

You don’t have to travel far to taste the authentic cuisines of Asia, Italy, Latin America and beyond. Just minutes away from homes in Westbury and Carle Place is a world of ethnic delicacies. Here are some to try. Azerbaijan: Azerbaijan Grill On your table is a shaker of somagh, a red powder made of crushed sumac berries, a popular condiment in Azerbaijan. Sprinkle it on vegetable moussaka; unlike Greek moussaka, it is made without cheese but is still creamy. Sliced vegetables—eggplant, potatoes, zucchini and pepper—are cooked individually and then combined with a basil tomato sauce and baked. Azerbaijan Grill is at 1610 Old Country Road, Westbury. Call 516-228-0001 for more information. Colombia: Pollos el Paisa As the name reveals Pollos el Paisa is all about chicken but sometimes the desire for their skirt steak draws me there. The deliciously seasoned steak is brought sizzling to the table in a cast iron pan and is especially good with their chimichurri sauce of finely chopped green herbs, garlic, olive oil, vinegar and more. I love soaking tostados in the juices from the steak. Pollos el Paisa is at 989 Old Country Road, Westbury. Call 516-338-5858 for more information. Dominican Republic: Punta Cana A perfect accompaniment to the hearty food served at Punta Cana is the homemade juices, made fresh every day. It’s hard to choose between passion fruit, lime and tamarind so get them all. They taste good mixed together. Punta Cana is at 162 Post Ave., Westbury. Call 516-280-4099 for more information.

Italy: Vincent’s Clam Bar Still going strong since 1980, Vincent’s serves southern Italian cuisine. The meal at Vincent’s starts with their homemade bread served hot with olive oil and spices. This bread is perfect for sopping up the sauce from baked clams, one of their most popular dishes. Vincent’s Clam Bar is at 179 Old Country Road, Carle Place. Call 516742-4577 for more information.

Clams at Vincent’s Clam Bar. Korea and Japan: Harmony Fusion Korean and Japanese dishes go well together here at Harmony Fusion in Westbury. We always get vegetable pajun, a Korean-style pancake (similar to Chinese scallion pancakes but much larger). On the Japanese side, the complementary miso soup is the most flavorful I’ve had anywhere. The fried noodle dish—chicken yaki soba—is topped with seaweed flakes that “danced” as they hit the heat. Harmony Fusion is at 263B Post Ave., Westbury. Call 516-280-7878 for more information. Mexico: Tocolo Cantina I love all the food at Tocolo Cantina, where they serve modern Mexicanstyle food, but especially enjoy ending the meal with churros,

the long, fried-dough pastry served with a goat’s milk caramel sauce. These followed by their complementary little cup of hot chocolate is a sweet ending to a delicious meal. Tocolo Cantina is at 920 Old Country Rd. in the Gallery at Westbury Plaza. Call 516-222-0060 for more information. Portuguese: Lisbon Cafe Pork with clams Alentejo-style, a quintessential Portuguese dish, has been highly praised as prepared at Lisbon Cafe. The dish brings together the unusual combination of pork and clams. Marinated pork cubes are sautéed, creating a rich brown sauce, to which Little Neck clams are added. The dish is served with crispy potato cubes and garnished with roasted red pepper and orange slices. Lisbon Cafe is at 490 Westbury Ave. in Carle Place. Call 516-280-5015 for more information. Philippines: Guiradelco Halo-halo is a strangely delicious dessert offered at Guiradelco. Served in a tall ice cream soda glass, it contains jackfruit, string coconut, tapioca, sweet purple yam, sweet palm fruit, ice milk and tapioca. And mango ice cream on top. And a little square of flan. In Tagalog, the language of the Philippines, halo means mix, and that’s what you do with all those ingredients, creating a treat that is all at once creamy, crunchy, chewy and sweet, and colorful to boot. Guiradelco is at 324 Post Ave., Westbury. Call 516-333-9898 for more information.

Halo-halo is a delicious dessert option at Guiradelco. cooked lamb, chopped tomatoes, red peppers, onion and parsley, and the bread is folded over. Pide is made with the same dough, but thicker, and is shaped like a rowboat. It can be packed with a variety of well-flavored fillings, such as Turkish pastrami or sausage, cheese, and vegetables, and is baked until crisp. Mediterranean Kebob House is at 190 Post Ave., Westbury. Call 516-333-8715 for more information.

Vietnam: Pho Maxia Banh hoi tom nuong—angel hair noodles with grilled shrimp—is a refreshing dish at this Vietnamese restaurant. At the table you place a square of the cooked noodles (extremely thin noodles woven into a mat) on a lettuce leaf; add lemon-grass seasoned grilled shrimp and basil leaves and fold the lettuce leaf into a packet. It is served with a dipping sauce made from nuoc Turkey: Mediterranean Kebob House mam, a fish sauce that is a staple in numerous Southeast Asian cuisines, Here are two interesting, breadlime, ginger and carrot. based specialties: lahmacun and Pho Maxia is at 817 Carman Ave., pide. The Space at Westbury Theater

BY BETSY ABRAHAM

BABRAHAM@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

For the past several years, the Village of Westbury has been making a push to revitalize its downtown and perhaps this year more than any, Post Avenue saw the rewards of all that hard work. With the newly renovated Space at Westbury thriving, it seems like downtown Westbury is becoming more and more lively, with a diverse offering of activities almost every day of the week. The venue has been successful in bringing in a diverse group of visitors who are patronizing stores and eateries along Post Avenue. And people have taken notice. According to the Westbury Business Improvement District (BID), more than five new businesses opened on Post Avenue this year, with others in the process of opening before year’s end and many more interested in coming to the downtown area. There are a wide variety of retailers and businesses along Post

Avenue—everything from clothing and grocery stores, to nail salons, realtors and quick-bite cafes. Along with the village, groups such as the BID and Greater Westbury Council for the Arts (GWCA) have been instrumental in helping the revitalization efforts. The three have partnered to bring numerous events to the village and celebrated another successful outdoor concert series this summer, adding a live artist element this year. They’ve also shown films and held art shows, which have attracted visitors from all over Nassau County. The BID has several other programs slated, including the successful BID Dollar program which encourages residents to shop local, the Sign Grant program for new businesses, Restaurant Week in the spring and Small Business Saturday. Thanks to the hard work of the village administration and community groups, Westbury is making steady progress in becoming a Long Island focal point for arts and living.

The Westbury Memorial Public Library: A Community Hub BY BETSY ABRAHAM

BABRAHAM@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

You’d be hard-pressed to find a friendlier, more helpful place than the Westbury Memorial Public Library. More than 21,000 cardholders from Westbury and Carle Place come through the library’s doors each year, and the site serves as a community center for local residents, offering numerous programs and activities. Throughout the week there are numerous educational workshops, discussion groups and presentations for all ages held at the library. Residents enjoy musical performances, cooking classes, the latest movies and exercise groups, while over at the Children’s Library youngsters partake in storytimes, crafts and other activities. Teenage patrons also have a place to crash at the teen zone. Every day after school, teens are invited to come use modern technology in their own section of the library, which was recently renovated, as well as engage in weekly craft, videogame and homework sessions. A MakerBot Replicator

3D printer has also allowed the library to expand their “Maker” programs for young adults and integrate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) into activities. The library has transitioned well into the 21st century. In addition to their large book and DVD collection, the library also offers patrons access to eReaders, laptops and iPads. Many residents also utilize the computer lab and technology seminars that are offered, which provide instruction on how to use small handheld devices. History lovers can enjoy the offerings of the Historical Cottage, which is nestled between the main library building and Children’s Library. The cottage houses dozens of historical artifacts, pictures and documents related to local history. The library is also the gathering place of the Historical Society of the Westburys, which meets monthly for fascinating presentations on a variety of topics. The Westbury Memorial Public Library is at 445 Jefferson St. Find out more at www.westburylibrary.org or call 516-333-0176.

Teaching children to live peacefully in a diverse world. CHILDREN ARE THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL Learning doesn’t have to be dull to be of value. It doesn’t have to be stressful to be outstanding. It does need to be relevant, engaging, joyful and challenging enough to bring learners to their own growing edges, wherever they may be. At Westbury Friends School, in addition to providing an intellectually challenging and engaging learning environment, the faculty takes a whole child approach that aims to inspire in each of their students a lifelong love of learning that goes beyond the acquisition of skills and information; students are taught to ask thoughtful questions in the spirit of curiosity, intellectual

integrity and creativity. They also learn to resolve conflicts peacefully through purposeful listening. Students explore and embrace cultural, religious, personal and economic diversity through studies of their local and global communities, and through the daily interactions with peers who are both similar and different from one another. Through active service learning experiences in their own communities and around the globe, students develop a sense of responsibility as stewards of the earth, and caring citizens of the world. Call us to arrange a tour. See the learning in action, feel the joy.

WESTBURY/CARLE PLACE GUIDE • OCTOBER 7 - 13, 2015

Why I Love Westbury

“When I moved to Westbury in 2009, the first thing I fell in love with was Post Avenue. It is unlike anything I experienced growing up in the suburbs of Central Florida. I love that almost everything I need is a short walk from my house and I patronize Post Avenue businesses whenever I can. The piazza in the center of town gives the Village of Westbury warmth and a strong sense of community. The second thing I fell in love with was the people. I joined the Greater Westbury Council for the Arts to feel like I was part of Westbury and that has resulted in my meeting a large and diverse group of interesting people, many of whom I now consider close friends. The cultural and artistic diversity of the residents of Westbury are what makes it so special. The third thing I love about Westbury is our mayor. Mayor Cavallaro never fails to impress me

with his thoughtful, insightful leadership of the Village of Westbury. Even though I’ve only been here a short time I feel proud to call Westbury my home.” —Julie Lyon “I saw the library and supermarket and railroad were within walking distance, and I said this is an ideal place so that’s why I moved here. I liked that I could walk to everything. I like the conveniences and being able to walk to the senior center and shopping.” —Edith Joseph “I like to be centrally located. Growing up in Queens I saw Queens as a middle ground, not just geographically but also in terms of sensibility, between Manhattan and Long Island; a kind of urban/suburban hybrid. People from Long Island saw me as being from “the city,” while

my Manhattan friends thought of me as being from “the Island.” What I love about Westbury is that it is centrally located. If you look at a map of Nassau County, Westbury is pretty much right in the middle; we are north of the South Shore and south of our North Shore friends. I love that! It’s a bit simple, I know, but that’s what I love about Westbury. That, and the Hobo Delight at the Harvest Diner!” — Mike Cesarano “There are neighborly people here. When my kids were young, we had 52 kids on one block and they all played with one another. It’s just a nice place to live in.” —Marie Rex “It’s in the middle of Nassau County and you have everything here. It’s a good place to raise a family. It’s a vibrant community and

takes you from when you’re little or middle-aged into your senior years because there are so many activities. It keeps us young at heart.” —Mimi Scrandis “I used to live in Manhattan so this is nice and quiet. It’s peaceful and convenient here.” —George Castillo “It’s convenient to everything. I can walk to Post Avenue, to the senior center, railroad, library. Plus there are buses and Roosevelt Field is closeby.” —Thomas Holloway “The environment is lovely, it’s a beautiful community. It’s centrally located and has a diverse population. It has many activities we enjoy and is a wonderful place to live. The location of the community is centrally located

on the island so it’s also convenient.” —Cynthia Johnson “Time goes fast when you are living in a wonderful place and Westbury is that special place. After living in Carle Place for 22 years, I moved to Westbury in 1977 after marrying Tom, a Westbury resident. This was a time of social change and awareness. Westbury was and still is a community that embraces and celebrates diversity. Many of the friends we made when we first came to Westbury are still active in community affairs and continually strive to make Westbury a better place for everyone to live and work. I am continually impressed by the residents of Westbury: the community outreach programs, the involvement of the Italian organizations to support St. Brigid’s parish and Italian culture, Creole masses, the celebration of Hispanic culture, the mobilization of the community to prevent a casino from interfering with the residential nature of our community, the newly

remodeled Islamic center and religious diversity, the many active civic associations, the revitalization of the downtown area with the help of the BID and now a flourishing Arts Council. The list goes on. With the support of Mayor Cavallaro and the Village of Westbury, the Greater Westbury Council for the Arts has been formed to attract, develop, and promote art and culture throughout the community. This is just one example of the commitment and dedication of the people of Westbury improve the lives of all its residents. To me, Westbury is a beacon for all neighborhoods to behold and emulate. As a local realtor, I am proud to show clients homes in Westbury and tell them the many reasons they should make their home here. It is easy to promote the community I love. I consider myself lucky to live and work in Westbury and to contribute to its bright future as a model community.” —Wendy Liotti “When I came here in 1954, I lived in the Polish area in New Cassel, from there it changed as people moved in. My children grew up here and did very well. They made friends that are lasting and there was a lot of communication between schools, parents and students. The

diversity and how people get along make [the area] unique. No matter who moves in or out, the neighbors help the new neighbors.”

“It’s not too far from the city and you’re in the middle of the island. There’s a lot to do around here. There’s the “Yes We Can” Center, which is amazing and there’s a lot to do at Roosevelt Field Mall and Jones Beach. You can get a taste of everything because it’s close to a lot of things.” —Evan Mohammad “All the conveniences of stores and the highways are closeby. It’s really convenient.” —Thomas Nixon “I love living in Westbury because it

“As editor of The Westbury Times for the past two and a half years, I’ve had a unique look at Westbury and Carle Place. There are so many things that make this little corner of the world special. One of the things that stands out most to me about these communities is how tight-knit they are. Though they’re small, there is such a strong sense of pride and identity in both neighborhoods. Everyone is always willing to help each other, and fight to protetct their community. The diversity in the communities also set it apart. There are people from all over the world in Westbury and Carle Place, and the mix of ethnicities adds such a rich culture (and menu) to the area. Everyone embraces—and celebrates—the different nationalities and the demographic is a good representation of the world.” —Betsy Abraham
