EASTLEIGH NAIROBI

The number of refugees in the world reached the highest number ever registered according to the United Nations (UN) and it doubled in the last two decades. That’s one of every 111 people on the planet. The 85% of world’s displaced people lives in low or medium income countries and ¼ of them lives in developing countries.

KAKUMA ‘Nowhere’

IFO

Kakuma refugee camp is located in the North-Western region of Kenya and it is the largest of the world. The camp was estabilished in 1992 and is managed by the Kenyan Department of Refugee Affairs and UNHCR. Today, Kakuma hosts nearly 100.000 South Sudanese and 55.000 Somali most of whom were driven from their homelands by civil war, but the camp also hosts refugees from nearly 20 other countries. Conditions in Kakuma are grave, as donor support has waned in recent years. The camp’s resources and infrastructure are overtaxed, and occupants have scant opportunities for gainful employment or education. Malnutrition is rampant throughout the camp and overcrowding has accelerated the spread of infectious diseases. Despite all these factors, however, many residents remain optimistic about their futures.

Ifo, the oldest of the five Dadaab camps, provides accommodation for refugees from over ten countries, although most are from Somalia. Like many of the camps on this list, Ifo is severely overcrowded: most household plots are just 12m x 15m, and all nine sectors of the camp have exceeded their designated capacities. Worse yet, half of the camp is located in a flood-prone area. To reduce overcrowding, an extension to the camp, aptly named Ifo II, was constructed in 2011.

DAGHALEY

HAGADERA

Dagahaley refugee camp, also part of the Dadaab complex, is the third-largest refugee camp in the world, with a population of nearly 90,000 people. Like Hagadera, the camp was rapidly constructed in the early 1990s in response to the Somali Civil War, and has well outlasted its expected retirement date. In 2011, an uptick in violence - coupled with ongoing droughts and famine - drove an unanticipated number families to seek refuge in Dagahaley. The subsequent overcrowding, and spillover into land beyond the camp’s official boundaries, has led to friction between camp occupants and Kenyan locals. In response, the Kenyan government has threatened to close the camp altogether, and its fate is uncertain.

The second, third, and fourth-largest refugee camps in the world all belong to the Dadaab refugee complex in southeastern Kenya. Hagadera, the largest of the five camps (and the second largest in the world), is home to over 100,000 refugees, of which over 95% hail from Somalia. In the quarter-century since it was founded, Hagadera has evolved into a veritable city, with a strong economy undergirded by a vibrant central market. The camp is highly congested, and many occupants have built informal housing settlements on the camp’s outskirts. In order to alleviate overcrowding, camp officials have begun to relocate occupants to the newest Dadaab refugee camp, Kambioos.

FIRST AVENUE/ C BLOCK

URBAN TRANSFORMATION

The block is filled with multistorage buildings, mostly hosting shopping malls. Lying on the First Avenue, it’s one of the main nodes of the neighborhood where the commercial activities are highly concentrated.

The rapid transformation happened without any pianification, altered the old urban grid, causing a lack of public open spaces and the infrastractural decay. Furthermore, the new construction are invading the sidewalks areas, not leaving choice to pedestrian but moving towards the carways, bringing to viability troubles and traffic jams.

The Somali Shopping Center

The Amal Shopping Plaza came out of a group effort, where 10 to 15 Somali refugees bought shares into a project. After having bought the three plots in 2002, they formed the Amal Company and sold the idea to their community. In the meantime, interested shop owners had to pay 6.000 dollars goodwill in order to show their serious interest, so that in the end, the building costs of the shopping center were covered before they even started to build it up . The Amal Plaza was thereafter officially opened in June 2004, which was a welcome addition to the Eastleigh business community due to the state-of-the-art facilities that it offered, compared to others competitors in the property market. Its diversity and density of goods somehow reflects what you experience on the streets on a smaller scale in an interior world full of staircases, ramps, and plenty of stalls. It really seems like a microrganism of all the activities you can find in Eastleigh. With the Amal Shopping Plaza Somali refugees intended to estabilish a world class facility which could compete on an equal footing with other major international shopping malls.

The Amal Shopping Plaza is one of the leading shopping centers in Eastleigh, located at the First Avenue in a prime commercial area and hosts a wide range of business dealing in clothes, shoes, leather products, restaurants, offices, telecommunication, electronics and other wide range of products. The initial design idea was accessibility to the First Avenue The clients wanted as much pedestrian movement in front of each shop as possibl. Due to a strong competition between shopping centers, they were also demanded to create a lot of open space bringing in natural light. Characteristic for Amal’s floor plans is the stil visible impact of the three groups of interests who formed the Amal Group. The idea in the design phasis was that they could operate on their own. Though, they joined economic forces by representing one successful company.

BAHN HOFLADEN INTERIOR DESIGN & RENOVATION

LAVERIA LaMarmora

Carbonia-Iglesias

SA RD I NI A
