The upcoming proposal concerns the area of Hotel Xenia located on the coastal front of Volos and includes the building blocks between the streets of Plastira, Philipou Ioannou, Saratsi and Tsitsilianou, a part of Anavros park and the old hospital. Initially, we identified the buildings of unknown ownership that seemed let in a bad condition. Then, based on the philosophical term of deconstruction, we began to fill the extensions of the hotel and the hospital with the units enclosing their shells linearly up to the meeting point of the two directions. The presented option here is one of the many possible scenarios of this "unit collage" constructed by individual units whose sets will host any subject within one day to eleven months. The system of units beyond the rooms that ensure the guests' needs also have individual activities open to all. The interrupted corridors are developing between the units giving the feeling of exaltation of the park. Finally, some of these units are located within the rest of the area located in the uninhabited buildings reported as evidence of spreading degradation.

THE RESTROOM: A GENDERED STORY

THESIS

THE RESTROOM: A GENDERED STORY IN COLLABORATION WITH EMMANUELA REPPA

The given research deals with the condition of the restroom in terms of its gendered character. It also seeks to study the historical evolution of its design and the reason for its gender-separation in the first place. Under what circumstances did this sex-separation begin? For what reasons? What does it serve? Why is it continuing until today? What technological developments and what "architectures" has this gender influenced and produced? At the first stage of the research, the concept of gender was studied, as it constitutes the center of this spatial separation. It was useful to define and understand the concepts of “sex” and “gender”, the first relating on anatomy, and the second imposing the individual’s performativity based on its sex as well as dependence of one upon the other dictated socially. At the next stage, it was examined how gender, with all its "executive effects", influenced the functioning of society in every historical era and played a role in the designing of space. From the sex-separated home environment, to the public sphere that provided space for the exclusive use of the woman, so that they can enter it without having their "sexuality" disturbing the balance of society. At the final and main stage of the theoretical research, the aim was to investigate and analyze the area of the lavatory in particular, with an emphasis on its public meaning, as a widely gender-charged environment of sexual separation. The exploration of the concept of a toilet is not limited to a particular landscape, but depending on the examined time periods reference is made to key areas like America, Europe and more. With regard to the practical part of this work, a questionnaire survey was conducted in order to gather the views and preferences of people of different ages, sexes and nationalities on the form, use and sexual separation of public restrooms. Also, a short-range project took place in public and semi-public toilets of Volos.

THE CENTER IS ON THE PERIMETER

THE CENTER IS ON THE PERIMETER RECONSTUCTION ALONG THE HIGHWAY OF VOLOS IN COLLABORATION WITH KATERINA KOTSAKI

The project is placed along a section of the highway of the city of Volos. It consists two sites that are considered us urban voids. The area is dominated by residential buildings and few shops. At the first site the proposal consists of a complex of buildings as workshops for the craftsman of the area (woodcutters, sculptors), a flea market in which people from the area can exhibit and sell their products, a library with reading-working rooms as well as temporary dwellings with shared spaces. At the exterior space there are formed many small squares and paths within the complex of the buildings. The second site has commercial, sports and cultural uses. The design is based at the perimeter of each site. The aim is to create a new block of buildings and protect it from the noise and the view of the highway. The buildings on the perimeter isolates the center of the sites and at the same time connects it with small roads and residential houses of the area, providing the possibility to the locals to cross this complex of buildings and explore it.

UNDERGROUND SEED STORAGE

UNDERGROUND SEED STORAGE CENTER OF RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN COLLABORATION WITH MARIA ANASTASIADOU

The complex of buildings presented is placed on a hill outside of the city of Volos and is built in an inclination of 15°. The purpose is to store a large amount of grains and to provide spaces for an institute of research and education. There are rooms provided for conferences, for informing the students, as well as rooms for the employees and the scientists to stay. On the highest level of the volumes there are placed a restaurant/cafÊ and a cinema. The basic principle of the design is the development of a complex of buildings consisted of many small volumes that are con nected with each other or of one volume going into the other.
