DNA of hope
FRANKFURT | GERMANY HENNING LARSEN ARCHITECTS, 2017 The competition proposal is located in Frankfurt, Germany, where the new headquarter of a global pharmaceutical firm (anonymous) will be built. To reflect the client, we designed the DNA of hope, an office building who's efficient organization is inspired by a strand of human DNA. The proposal was developed from the inside out, as the client had specific requirements about the workspace and its arrangement, based on their office work flow. The plan provides a lot of light, an open concept working environment, exterior courtyards within the building which bring greenery inside. One of the building key features is the large atrium which unifies the building, and resembles a DNA strand with its circulation system. The facade of the headquarter is a one way mirror, reflecting the park near the site, as well as blend the building with the exterior, a poetic approach to the brand of the firm. I was involved in the design process in all aspects of the projects, and in the production phase of the competition, I was in charge of the elevations, the sections, and the facade detail.

continental hq
HANNOVER | GERMANY HENNING LARSEN ARCHITECTS, 2017 Continental, a global automative manufacturing company, is opening a headquarter in Hanover, and our team developed a proposal for their new campus. Our core concept was the infinity campus, based on a loop, centralized in two main circular buildings that would lead one through the numerous buildings on the site, allowing one to experience Continental, what the firm and its brand is about, as well as exhibit products along the loop. A site challenge was tying the two plots of land without having the campus feeling divided. Our solution of the loop as well as two central and prominent buildings at the street corner connected with a bridge tied the two plots together, as well as established a center to the campus and a new meeting space for the employees.

kormann house hotel
TORONTO | ONTARIO 3B, 2016 For my music themed design studio, I chose to renovate and create an addition to the Kormann House Hotel, a heritage building in the Great Toronto Area. The hotel ran out of business and turned to a watering hole for the homeless. It is now a beautiful, weathered, abandoned old house. The area around the site is not the safest in the city of Toronto, and next to my site there is a Anishnawbe Health Center. I wanted to create a musical safe haven in this area, which incorporates the Anishnawbe center in its program. I took over the lot to create a music center, for therapy and leisure. The center is composed of the Anishnawbe health center, the old hotel building, and a new performance and therapy building. The Kormann House Hotel would preserve its hotel program which could be used by the Anishnawbe center patients. I also added music rooms, a bar and a cafe, a recording studio and lounging spaces within the brick shell. A glass atrium would link the hotel to the performance stage and to the Anishnawbe Health Center. All three buildings work together in a symphony to make a creative, safe place for the people living in the rough area surrounding the site. Music therapy, artistic exchanges and performances, as well as a place of pleasure and easiness is the intent of the design.

TORONTO, ON | DON VALLEY RIVER 2B, MAY 2015 This private spa facility is set at Taylor Massey Creek, adjacent to the Don River in Toronto, where the tributaries of the river converge. The bathhouse offers a ritualistic experience through a series of baths of varying temperature and sensual natural materials, climate changing gardens and board walks along the river edge. The project is structured based on the traditional ancient Roman bathhouse. The wooden board walks connect the bathhouse to existing paths and bridge over the river, creating a public realm on the exterior. They run along the bathhouse, cutting through the gardens, which are public spaces within the private facility. They lead one through the experience of the building from the outside, and end at a large outdoor public pool to complete the journey.

LANDSCAPE FORM
The strategy of the building shape is a courtyard, a form which allows for privacy for the bathers, as well as create a garden space in the center.
To accommodate public access, flow and a visual connection to the Don, openings in the building form are created, linking them to the interior courtyard.
The building forms itself to the landscape, moving vertically with it. This also allows for dynamic heights for the various spaces, and access to the river edge.

PROGRAM SEQUENCE The programs of the bathhouse have a specific order which they must follow to provide the authentic and tailored experience of bathing. The linear progression through spaces is used as the base for the building program arrangement. The floor plan shapes the exterior of the building based on the types of spaces that must be accommodated.

the other place//graft
ROME | ITALY 4A|2017 The grafting project was a small exercising as an introduction to Rome. It looked at adding a structure to an existing physical condition in Rome, with the purpose of aiding in the gathering and uniting of all people from the world in the city. The site I chose is on the river side of the Aurelian Walls in Trastevere, where an old masonry wall still stands, a structural element used in the construction of these ancient walls, protecting the city from the flooding Tiber. It curves concavely towards the water, reminding me of an acoustic sound mirror in its form. The idea of sound and its projection became the beginning of the inspiration for the graft I would impose on my site. I would use sound, performance and theatre as the central theme around which would stem a community. The design is a steel scaffold system, rising above the river and framing the acoustic wall, reaching beyond it to connect into the concrete hill embracing the wall. The acoustic wall becomes the pivotal point of the grafted structure, and it frames the informal stage created in front of it. The sounds emanated from the stage will be projected into the city through the cloud-like steel structure around it, seen and heard from the bridge near it.

SCAFFOLD UNIT MULTI-PURPOSES
The structure becomes a floating community which connects people through the arts and performance, a language of its own. It breaks the social and political barriers of the everyday and everyone is able to communicate in a new way with each other. A surrealistic atmosphere is introduced along the river, with lights and screens creating shadows and otherworldy forms on the scaffold. The idea of using a scaffold came from its flexibility and ease of dismantling, but was also inspired from the ancient theatres of Rome which were rarely permanent and typically constructed as easy to take apart wooden structures. The scaffold is a grafted outer shell, which frames the city along the river, and creates pockets of space to be inhabited. Its exterior isn’t the focus, but instead its insides, which become a social gathering stimulator.

7 mirror state CAMBRIDGE, ON | UW SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE 2B, SUMMER 2015 For our Iconography Cultural History course, my class was assigned to write, build, produce and cast a play, themed around Artaud, a famous French theatre director known for his “Theatre of Cruelty”. I was a part of the set design team as well as an actress, playing the role of Peggy Guggenheim, an American art collector and socialite who surrounded herself with personnages such as Picasso. Below is the play’s synopsis:
“It’s 1931. We’re in Surrealist era Paris- a world boiling over with odd juxtapositions and startling contrasts- for the opening of the Exposition Colonial Internationale, a grand exhibition of foreign arts, reproducing at full scale and architectural detail many of the world’s most sensational buildings, including the Great Temple of Angkor Wat. Most Surrealist artists boycotted the controversial expo, but one famous dramatist, actor, writer and artist was drawn to its rich and curious cultures. In August that year, at the Dutch pavilion, he watched a wordless drama of gesture performed by a troupe of Balinese dancers. Shaken with inspiration, he conceived a modern dramatic form that returned to the body to restore the rawness and blood ritual that western decadence had stripped from theatre and replaced by spoken language.” - Executive Producer’s Note

This is a compilation of selected works from my artistic portfolio as well as models I have built during my architectural studies. I have developed and refined my artistic abilities in the enriching visual arts program of Canterbury High School, whose facilities allowed me to explore the various art forms, using many mediums and tools. I’ve learned to mold different materials into any shape and form I like, from working with clay and ceramic glazes to linoleum blocks and gauges, to paintbrushes, markers and pencils to digital paintbrushes and softwares. I am capable of thinking and expressing myself through various mediums, and continuously look for opportunities to improve and acquire new skills.
