I. THE CITY OF BORDEAUX .
International Students Guide 2013/2014
3
As early as the 3rd century AD, Bordeaux – called "Little Rome" at the time – was a prosperous Gallo-Roman city. The Middle Ages were a time of major economic development thanks to the wine trade. Bordeaux is also on the pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela and some of the historic part of the city has been listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007. In the 18th century, talented urban developers and architects transformed the city under the impulsion of royal intendants. At the present time, the mayor of Bordeaux has initiated a number of ambitious public works projects worthy of a major European city. The redevelopment of the quays is the most striking example. Cruise ships often come to weigh anchor along the Bordeaux waterfront, one of the most beautiful in Europe. The quays are bordered by the Place des Quinconces, the largest square in Europe. From Saint Pierre to Sainte Croix the Squares of Old Bordeaux are to be found throughout one of the largest examples of 18th and 19th century architecture.
Saint Pierre: The Saint Pierre district is a maze of
La Grosse Cloche
streets lined with beautiful buildings, many of which are craftsmen's boutiques and artists' workshops. However, the district also features avant-garde show rooms. Saint Pierre's many squares offer picturesque outdoor restaurants and cafés in which to enjoy a relaxing moment. Les Chartrons: Virtually self-sufficient, the Chartrons district has a village atmosphere and plenty of quality boutiques. The Chartrons includes Rue Notre Dame, a street full of antique dealers, second-hand shops, and art galleries, as well as Rue du Faubourg des Arts, which has recently become devoted to art and designers in a variety of fields.
Moreover, Bordeaux is located one hour away from the beach. La Dune du Pyla, located at the entrance of the Bay of Arcachon, opposite the Pointe du Cap Ferret, is the biggest sand dune of Europe. Measuring 105 meters high, 2700 meters long, 500 meters wide and with a volume of 20 million cubic meters of sand, the "Big Dune" is the most visited spot of the coastal area, with over 1 million visitors per year. It has been declared an "important national site" in 1978. Contrary to what one might think, the Dune du Pyla is of reasonably recent origin. In 1855, it was only 35 meters high. According to experts, its origin is due to the disappearance of an
enormous sand-bank that, in the 18th century, used to lie before the coast, and also linked to the permanent supply of sand by the wind.

BEM and Euromed have been officially accredited by the American association AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). With this 3rd international accreditation, they have joined the prestigious circle of business schools holding the "Triple Crown": EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System), AMBA (Association of MBAs) and, today, the AACSB. In the world of Business Schools, international accreditations play a special role. In addition to other guarantees of quality (recognition by the French government and the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles), these three quality labels guarantee the academic and professional excellence of the school’s degree programs. Public transport information TBC tram & Bus The tramway serves the town, crossing the Garonne via the Pont de Pierre. A distinctive feature of the tramway is that within the inner city, it has no overhead wires. The electric bus, called la navette du centre ville, is the only public transportation on pedestrian roads. There are no bus stops for this one: to board an electric bus, wave your hand to the driver – he will stop the bus and let you on. When you want to go out, just tell the driver. IV. HOW TO FIND ACCOMMODATION? .
International Students Guide 2013/2014
20
KEDGE Business School welcomes many international students each semester, and is happy to help them finding accommodation. Housing in Bordeaux is difficult to find, so we strongly recommend students to book accommodation before arrival. Please note that the School does not have its own dormitories, that is why we try to offer you as many options as we can. For that, we are supplied by a student association “Melting Potes” that helps students to find suitable accommodation on the private market (details further below).
Your housing options CROUS: Student residence halls Most of them are located on the campus of Talence and well served by public transportation. They provide furnished rooms or shared flats at the cheapest rate (between 250€ and 360€/month all included). Due to the low number of rooms available for KEDGE BS Students, only long-term students staying for at least 2 semesters will be offered this option. Contact: caroline.guilloux@kedgebs.com before June 15th
On-campus residence in Talence (campus 1 & 2) DOMOFRANCE (adjacent to the school in Talence, Campus 1 and 2) Résidence “Le Campus” 80 rue Ronsard, 33405 Talence Fax: (33) 556 43 42 92 http://www.domofrance.fr This residence provides furnished individual flats to international students. It offers facilities such as launderette, caretaker and tennis court. It is run by a social organism (Domofrance) and dedicates a few flats for KEDGE BS international students. The rent is around 400€ /450€ per month (all charges included except electricity). Important: If you are coming for the Fall semester, it is compulsory to book (and pay) the flat from July included. It may be an opportunity for you to spend some vacation in Bordeaux during the summer! Contact: For reservation: caroline.guilloux@kedgebs.com before June 1st For additional information: etudiants@domofrance.fr

Private residences: Campus 1 & 2 (Talence) Campus 3 (Mérignac) Private residences are managed by private societies and provide fully furnished and equipped flats with many facilities. They are located mostly in Talence (Campus 1 & 2) and Merignac (Campus 3) but a few of them are also in Bordeaux. The price generally depends on the length of your stay but is around 550-600€/ month for a single flat and 800-900€/ month for a double flat without charges. They usually ask you, in order to book your flat, to pay 2 months of rent + the 1 month deposit before your arrival. KEDGE BS has special rates with some of these residences, that is why it is recommended to book through our housing advisor, but you can find all their details on the site: www.adele.org We advise you to book in advance as they are frequently requested. Contact: caroline.guilloux@kedgebs.com before July 1st
The private market Another possibility is to rent a room or a shared flat on the private market (flats run by landlords). The prices can be very different as it depends on the location, if the flats are furnished or not and if the charges are included. To give you an idea, the rents are around 450-650€/ month for an individual flat and 800900€/month for a 2 bedroom flat. For that matter, you can be helped by the student association “Melting Potes”. They are in direct relation with private landlords who agree to welcome international students without French guarantor. Nevertheless, note that the Melting Potes members are no estate agents but students who volunteers to welcome you, so we would be grateful for your patience with them. Contact: housing@meltingpotes-bordeaux.com before August 1st We also invite you to subscribe to the “Kedge Immo Bordeaux” Facebook group on which several offers can be posted from other KEDGE BS Students. If you speak a little French, you can as well and in the meantime, look for a room or a shared flat on dedicated websites: http://www.sudouest-immo.com http://www.leboncoin.fr http://www.espaceetudiant.net http://www.appartager.com http://www.paruvendu.fr International Students Guide 2013/2014

General information about housing Housing Insurance French regulations stipulate that all tenants must take out a housing insurance covering common risks (civil responsibility, fire, flood, theft). You must show a statement of housing insurance to obtain the keys of the apartment. The Melting Potes association can help you getting housing insurance by opening a bank account. Contact: contact@meltingpotes-bordeaux.com
Housing benefit from the CAF The French Caisse d'Allocations Familiales (C.A.F) grants a monthly amount to help students pay their housing in France. It is automatically granted to students who are from E.U. Non E.U. students may receive - or not - this housing benefit depending on the type of visa they are holding. Please note that if it is written on your visa “Dispense temporaire de carte de séjour”, you are not eligible for this grant. Students should submit their file to the CAF upon arrival, which will inform them whether or not they are entitled to receive the housing benefit. This housing benefit ("Aide Pour le Logement - APL") is subject to income conditions. As soon as you have your definitive housing address in France, apply for it on-line on http://www.gironde.caf.fr Once your application is accepted, the amount will be transferred to your bank account in France. It can only be backdated three months and the first and the last month are never granted. International Students Guide 2013/2014
23
Caisse d'Allocations Familiales de la Gironde Rue du Docteur Gabriel Péri, 33078 Bordeaux Cedex Open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm On-line data service: 0 810 29 29 29 You will receive a confirmation letter from the CAF by post so make sure your name is written on your accommodation’s mail box!
Miscellaneous: Vocabulary: Rental contract : the rental contract ("bail" or "contrat de location") describes
the apartment, the rent, how and when the rent should be paid and revised, the amount of the deposit and the date on which the lease begins. Two copies are made and signed by the landlord and the tenant (that's you). One copy is for you.
The landlord should send or give you a receipt for each rental payment made. This is necessary not only as proof of payment, but also to give you the proof of where you are living ("justification de domicile"), so frequently requested by the administrative services (for immigration services, to open a bank account and so on)...
The inventory of fixtures ("état des lieux") prior to moving in, is a complete inventory of the contents and the condition of the property established between the landlord and the tenant. This inventory is signed by both parties and each one keeps a copy. This is an important document as it meticulously describes the state of the apartment on entry, and is referred to when the tenant leaves the property. This inventory has to be done when you arrive and when you leave the apartment.
The deposit ("depôt de garantie"), is equivalent to one month rent, and kept by the
landlord until the tenant leaves the apartment. It is returned after all money owing on the apartment has been paid (rent, repairs, utilities, etc...) The landlord has a legal delay of 2 months after the tenant’s check out to give the deposit back. If there is any damage, the deposit is used to pay for any necessary repairs or cleaning. Pay attention to all the details (broken furniture or damaged walls) because you will be charged (on your guarantee “caution”) for any differences.
The French Residence Tax (Taxe d'habitation) is an annual residence tax imposed on the occupier of a property in which they were resident on January, 1st of each year. It is approximately equivalent to one month rent.
Warning: If you rent a furnished apartment, the rental agreement is for 1 year but can be dismissed by a registered letter (“lettre avec accusé de reception”) 1 month prior to your departure and should specify that the apartment is furnished.
International Students Guide 2013/2014
24
If you rent a non-furnished apartment, the rental agreement usually is of 3 years but can be dismissed by a registered letter (“lettre avec accusé de réception”) 3 months prior to your departure (read very carefully your rental contract as it must be written on it).
Useful Abbreviations CC or Cc: "charges comprises" >> operating costs included TCC: "toutes charges comprises" >> all costs included T1 or F1: the number after the T or F indicates the number of rooms in the apartment (except bathroom & kitchen) RDC: "rez-de-chaussée" >> ground-floor SDB: "salle de bains" >> bathroom SDE: "salle d'eau" >> shower
Tips for your housing hunt: You will need to find a furnished apartment or you will need to buy furniture (you can always sell it back to the other international students the following semester). If possible, try to avoid Estate Agencies, as they will charge you a lot and will ask for French guarantor. Try to deal directly with owners. Never send money in advance to private proprietor (except for private residences) Do not buy flat lists Do not forget to ask if the utilities (heat, hot water, cold water, waste, elevator) are included or not in the rent. If not, be aware that you will have additional bills. If the rent is 380 € TTC, it means that all the operating costs are included. If the rent is 350 € + 45 € CC, it means a rent of 350 € and 45 € for operating costs for a total cost of 395 € / month. Always ask exactly which are the operating costs included in the rent to avoid nasty surprises! A studio is a room from 18 to 30 m2 with a small kitchen & bathroom. Price: around 450-650 €/month. A F2 or T2 is a two-room apartment (living room and bedroom) with a bathroom & kitchen. Price: around 800-900 € / month. If you intend to book a room in a hotel, per day, you will pay a minimum of 60 € per day. Rent is to be paid in advance, usually before the 5th of the month by check or bank transfer. In addition to the first month's rent, you will often have to make a deposit of 1 month of rent. International Students Guide 2013/2014

V. HEALTH & INSURANCE .
International Students Guide 2013/2014
26
French National Health Insurance By law, all students being less than 28 years old on October 1st of the current academic year, and studying in France for more than 3 months, are required to register with the French National Health Insurance through their French higher Education Institution (i.e: KEDGE Business School) before the start of their courses. The registration fee was of €207 in 20122013. This registration is COMPULSORY for the students in order to be given their Student ID card and to be admitted in class
Exceptions Students from Quebec Students from Quebec are required to come with their SE-401-Q-106 form in order to be covered by the French National Health Insurance (“Sécurité Sociale Française"). In this case, Quebec students are not required to subscribe to the French National Health Insurance.
Students holding a European Health Insurance card Students from the European Union are required to come with their European Health Insurance Card in order to be covered by the French National Health Insurance. In this case, E.U. students are not required to subscribe to the French National Health Insurance.
Students being more than 28 or studying less than 3 months Students being more than 28 years old on October 1st of the current academic year or studying in France for less than 3 months will not be able to register with the French National Health Insurance but will have to give a proof of personal health insurance coverage before the start of their courses in order to be admitted in class and given their Student ID card.
Warning In the event of sickness, the French National Health Security “Sécurité Sociale Française" - http://www.ameli.fr - refunds a certain percentage or the expenditure based on set charges called "tarifs de base (TB)" or "tarifs conventionnés (TC)". The coverage is sufficient for a very basic visit at the General Doctor, but might not be sufficient to cover higher expenses such as hospitalization, change of glasses, dental / eye surgeries, etc... We therefore highly recommend students to subscribe for a complementary health coverage (complémentaire santé) in order to benefit from a better coverage.
