All superfluous stuff for the most observant among worshipers. And it is not necessary to bother Pier Paolo Pasolini (or Vladimir Ilic Ulianov, alias Lenin) to grasp the powerful ideological significance of the message: „the necessary goods make life necessary, superfluous goods make it superfluous“, quoting from memory. Of course, defining superfluous the possibility of braking to avoid an obstacle - which in fact is often not avoided, with the imaginable consequences - seems at least debatable. As perplexing the proud renunciation of the use of the gearbox (patent of 1901, in the internal version to the hub). Not to mention the disdain towards the freewheel, the one mounted on 99% of the bicycles in circulation, painted by the „fixed“ as a sybarite softness.
Yet the boom of fixed gear (or rather fixed), started quietly at the beginning of the millennium and literally exploded in the metropolises of the North of the world just as the greatest crisis in the history of capitalism began - and Lehman Brothers brought books to court, we were at the end of summer 2008 - no signs of quitting. On the contrary: it grows, matures. „The real boom, the one on quality,
starts now“, explains Diego Raco, former owner of an architecture firm with 5 employees who in 2014 completely changed his life and now assembles cool bikes in the center of Milan. «Today», he continues, «there are less fixed around than 3-4 years ago, but they are better, more beautiful and more aware cyclists pedal».

Even before the Brooklin Bike Messenger (the pedal express pony born in New York in the late nineties) made it a flag and a cool international icon. But on the popular bicycle shops, extraordinary places for elaboration and realization of utopian thought whose profound and lasting penetration in urban cultures has not yet been measured (and which have been going through a phase of inevitable fatigue for some years), another discourse should be opened - and this is not the place. Referring explicitly to the ideas of the Romanian-American economist Nicholas Georgescu Roegen, founder of the bioeconomy, Bellino approaches the model of economic deconstruction - through the elimination of unnecessary consumption and production - that of the fixed term as deconstruction of the bike through the elimination of each superfluous piece. And here that the same way, very particular, in which you ride a fixed becomes, tout court, a way of being in the world.
