FANTASY SANS designed by Cecilia Tommasi
S
INTRODUCTION
I started the process of creation of the new font, by copying the skeleton of the Bauer Bodoni font, designed by Heinrich Jost in 1926. This font is part of Bodoni typeface, created by Giambattista Bodoni between the late 18th and early 19th century in Italy. This romantic typeface has different characteristics as the high and abrupt contrast between thick and thin strokes, the unbracketed and thin serifs, the vertical axis and the horizontal stress. After removing the serifs, I changed the thickness, inclination and roundness of the strokes.
The terminals of the letters has been cut away horizontally. Though I maintained some rounded elements both for the capitals and the lower case letter, as the Q tail, the e and s terminal and few other. The stress is mainly vertical and the difference between the thick and think strokes is not anymore that strong as before, but still present. The optical effect produced by the new font remebered me somehow the typefaces used in fantasy children‘s book, therefor I decided to call it fantasy.

After eliminating the old serifs and changing the strokes, the font starts to have a more geometric feature. As last passage I cut off the terminal using a rectangular shape.

THE LETTERS FROM NO ONE Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense. Mr Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large moustache. Mrs Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbours. The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer boy anywhere. The Dursleys had everything they wanted, but they also had a secret, and their greatest fear was that somebody would discover it. They didn’t think they could bear it if anyone found out about the Potters. , but they hadn’t met for several years; in fact, Mrs Dursley pretended she didn’t have a sister, because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be.

The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son, too, but they had never even seen him. This boy was another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they didn’t want Dudley mixing with a child like that. When Mr and Mrs Dursley woke up on the dull, grey Tuesday our story starts, there was nothing about the cloudy sky outside to suggest that strange and mysterious things would soon be happening all over the country. Mr Dursley hummed as he picked out his most boring tie for work and Mrs Dursley gossiped away happily as she wrestled a screaming Dudley into his high chair. None of them noticed a large tawny owl flutter past the window. Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. DEVELOPMENT Bauer Bodoni is a serif font. For most of the letters there are unbracketed and squared serif but in this case there is as well a bracketed serif on a thin stroke. The thickness contrast is extremely strong. 12/16pt
