treeIT An interactive environment to rehabilitate Lake Vico team project
The installation “TreeIT” shows how to deal with the serious crisis of poison pollution that has affected Lake Vico in the Viterbo area. This project is a metaphor through which a terrain redevelopment project is described. The installation, situated in the historical center of Ronciglione consists in footbridge which unravels in various directions, making the space dynamic. In this project, information technology has played a fundamental role. The 3D parametric model of the installation has been designed with Rhinoceros + Grasshopper. The design proceeded
with a nesting operation in which the single element that composes the footbridge has been projected onto a 2D plane. The file produced by the previous operation is then given to carpentry for the computer aided cut of the OSB panels. All along the footbridge are distributed more than one hundred “synthetic” trees that evoke the designs intent. At the same time they shows that only with an active presence of the community can an intelligent solution be reached. The pipe illumination is created by a L.E.D. strip and is activated by a sensor connected to an Arduino board.

A/B Two different proposals for a new residential building. Latina (IT). individual project
The residential complex site is situated on the immediate outskirts of Latina (IT), on one of the main roads. The existing building is in a state of deterioration and in need of a massive restoration operation. The construction company has decided to proceed to demolish and rebuild, extending the buildings volume. The project, commissioned by DA.CO. Construction Company in Latina, consisted in designing two different proposals for the new building. The suggestions would then be shown to the residents who were supposed
to deliberate unanimously. Both proposals present four residential units of seven stories for proposal A and six stories for proposal B. The materials are inspired by the context characterized by a brick facade and white balconies. The first proposal is characterized by an “Lâ€? shaped building with a central courtyard like the existing layout. The second proposal has a parallel and offset distribution of the volumes and balconies characterized by a dynamic design that brings horizontal movement to the façade.

A/P archeonautic park Regeneration of Centocelle’ s Park in an urban thematic archeological - aeronautical park. Rome (IT). individual project
Centocelle’s Park is situated at the intersection between two very important arteries in the periphery of Rome, and has an extension of 120 he. A recent archeological investigation has brought to the light several historical ruins. In the 1900’s the site was the first Italian airport and location for a flight demonstration of Wright brothers. From a landscaping point of view the area appears to be a flat anonymous land. The project of the urban park develops around the idea of “connection”. Connection between the elements inside the area (historical existing buildings and previous thesis projects belonging to U.G.L.) and also outside the park site through the city and the other nearby
green areas. The idea is a historical and naturalistic park/path which connects the green site ofTorrespaccata and the green area of the Mausoleo of Sant’ Elena cutting diagonally in Centocelle’ s park.Around the path the various existence and the biological field defined are connected like “plugins”. Outside the track extends a first band consisting mainly of grass and a second band intended for agricultural activities. The design has been guided by the precious advice of Dr. Sandro Bonacquisti curator of the Botanical Garden of Rome. Another important element of the project is the construction of a hangar for a blimp station.

A-Tinnitus Interactive panel for noise reduction. Rome (IT). team project
Noise, a negative aspect of the cityscape, is turned into a resource in this project: the key to enabling this is the use of nanotechnology to convert noise into electricity. This happens through an interactive panel composed of mobile units applied to an elastic fabric, which can be activated by means of small hydraulic pistons. The pistons are attached to a metal grid at the rear and controlled by means of a set of acoustic sensors connected to an information terminal. The panel’s cells are composed of an extremely thin film of zinc-based piezometric material, a compound currently being
developed by two researchers from the Samsung Advanced Institute thereby converting mechanical energy into electricity. In this specific instance, a sound map has been created on various scales from the field data collected. The project envisages a steel structure. The different sound wave give life to a series of strips following the layout of the UGL to crate canopies, waiting areas, platforms, seats and few facades. The position of the panels on the structure is actually the result of transforming the sound map into numerical data by means of parametric software.

more or less Masterplan and residential housing in via Casal di Gregna. Rome (IT). team/individual project
The workshop, which lasted a year, intended to face the issue of the urban design of a new residential system, from an urban scale to building scale, starting from an agriculturalnaturalistic context. The development of the masterplan was a group task. In the second part of the course the students developed a single part belonging to a different urban masterplan drawn by other students. In the end the work on the individual building also included the study of structures and salient aspects of construction technologies, technical details and dimensions of the
structure. For the residential building, characterized by very restrictive rules, I played with the balconies and loggias, performing Boolean operations sometimes subtracting from the volume sometimes adding. The multistorey building consists of two units side-by-side with two apartments per floor for a total of 3 stories. The single unit consists of two duplexes and two simplexes. The basement floors are used for individual storage. While the roof of the building is used as a common area with the possibility of cultivating gardens.

Lucio Y Siesta Architectural survey of an ex-electric station now womens help centre. Rome (IT). team project
The team workshop consisted to survey a small building in a state of degradation in Rome. The construction is situated in the outskirts of the town and was once an electric sub-station. The electrical substations are situated at the points in which the tramlines cross each other. On the 8th of March 2008 a group of self-organized women occupied the abandoned building. As a result, it became a house for women called “Lucha y Siesta where today 23 women and 15 children live. They
have created a residential and social space for the women with an office for legal protection, orientation and training. For the outside survey we proceeded with the instrumental method of forward intersection using total station to measure particularly inaccessible points and prospects. To draw the prospect the instrumental information has been integrated with a photogrammetric survey. Internal measurements were performed through direct method with triangulations.

hard drive Restoration of the ex S. Agostino Convent. Project for a new library, Narni (IT). individual project
The Interior Design exam consisted in the complex project of restoring the ex S. Agostino Convent in the historical centre of Narni (IT). My task was to design a new library connected to the student rooms (The student rooms replace the previous Convent cells, situated on the top of the garth), located in the previous church space. The examination covered the building design from an architectural scale to a much more detailed scale. The construction consists in a thin
and long, slab shaped body, situated between the medieval walls. The library’s steel structure is completely separated from the existing elements in order to not put pressure on the existing elements. A CORTEN curtain wall façade forms the buildings shell. The slabs are composed of steel supported floors with pre-cast cellular clay infill components, a wooden floor covers the internal slabs and a gravel layer covers the flat roof.

Dedalus Wisbase center Sicily Lab – nITro group + Polis University 2013. team project
Micro – Macro. View from the top. Interventions in The Mediterranea Scape. Gioiosa Marea Wokshop, Sicily (IT). Director Prof. Antonino Saggio. The workshop was held in Gioiosa Marea, a small town in Northern Sicily. The nITro group and Polis University of Tirana attended at the laboratory. The participants were divided into three groups and each group had to produce an urbal level study, a project at an architectural scale and a series of micro interventions of plug-in design. The results from the research for the
larger scale projects led to devise an unusual building, designed to attract sportsmen and tourism exploiting the local attractions. The architectural project consists in a building with several functions all of which are inspired by Wisbase (Wisbase is a sport activity which consists in glide jumping from a hill or from an airplane using a wing suit). This activity is the link between the tops of the Nebrodi Mountains and the coast. The plug-ins design is a set of monoliths along the bicycle path that follows the north coast of the region and which intersects perpendicularly theWisbase path.

TetraPlay Public installation, Sicily Lab workshop. Sicily(IT). team project
The aim of the workshop held in Gioiosa Marea (ME) Sicily was to prepare an exhibition of the work done by the participants of the previous years and two installations for public space. TetraPlay is a modular urban furniture system designed to change the external spaces in a simple and standalone way: the target is the involvement of the individual to create new scenarios based on his needs. The installation aims to make urban spaces alive, in fact, each module can be aggregated freely to form a series of objects in the city which perform
different functions: from simple sitting to lighting, from signaling elements to children’s games, or interactive and informative element connected to an Arduino Board. The people themselves decide to reconfigure the space freely and playful manner. The structure is inspired by the composition of foams. Thanks to parametric tools we could recreate the foams structural model. Using Grasshopper and Geometry Gym (BIM for architectural and structural modellation) it was possible to envisage different spatial solutions starting with an initial rule.

Dragon International Workshop Spring Field Studio 2012. Hangzhou (CHina). team project
The design workshop “Spring Field Studio 2012” in Hangzhou was organized and directed by DIAP Architecture and Design Department of “Sapienza” Rome, Zhejiang University of Technology and the University of Zhejiang. The design theme of theWorkshop was the development and renovation of urban areas located along the Grand Canal of China, an extraordinary artificial river that connects the South of China to the capital Beijing with a run of nearly two thousand kilometres. The project includes a series of interventions such as a big equipped bridge that connects the two banks
of the Grand Canal, a directional pole and finally the part that relates to the design team of which I was a part. We created an exchange node between both private and public road and navigation transport. Several features characterize the project: car parks, hotels, restaurants and office buildings. The project was awarded an Excellent Design Certificate “International ExchangeWorks Exhibition of Chinese Students 2013” issued by the National Board of Architectural Accreditation, Institute of Architectural Education and Accreditation, Architectural Association of China.

MagNet EUROPAN 12 Gjian, Kosovo. team project
Currently, the center of Gjian is split into two sections because of the M25-3 regional road that monopolizes the axis that is strategic for the development of the city. Cars crowd spaces so public paths become insufficient and fragment. Mag NET proposes a reconnection between the two parts, turning public spaces, today perceived as residual spaces, into a multifunctional complex system, which is able to redevelop the axis and create a linear park along the future Mirusha Park. The current urban axis turns into a walking and cycling public space, green areas
and social spaces, which constitute also an important environmental system able to produce energy from renewable sources. Such as to collect waste water useful for sewage disposal and to decontaminate the ground through herbal purification ponds. The automobile mobility system will be guaranteed by burying a section of the road. Only a slow road for local mobility and public transport crosses the area of the project. An underground parking system serves the entire area. New flows will invade the area of the project and the entire city.

Open House Exhibition for Open House Rome 2013 and 2012. San Lorenzo, Rome (IT). team project
For the Open House Rome 2013, the Art Gallery “Come Se” has organized a series of events both inside and outside the gallery. nITro group on this occasion has contributed to the building of the DiAria installation of the two architects Tiziano Derme and Umberto di Tanna. The construction consists of an inflatable of circa 10x10x3 meters that simulate the respiration process and purifies the air. A series of rods handled by electric motors, connected to an Arduino board, allow the structure to inflate and deflate. A selection of plants were placed inside the inflatable due to their characterises, and were able to catch and absorb harmful substances present in the air purifying it.
On the occasion of Open House Rome 2012 “Come Se” Art Gallery by the help of some members of the nITro group organized an exhibition of the works of the Urban Green Line project carried out by Prof. Antonino Saggio. The project, A-Tinnitus, by Gaetano de Francesco and I was displayed at the exhibition. The project illustration was the selected image for the posters and the invites promoting the event. Previously, the project had been published on “l’Arca” and “l’Arca international” magazine.‘A-Tinnitus’ has also been published on the exhibition catalogue: AA.VV, Urban Green Line Progetti sistemici per una infrastruttura ecologica a Roma. parametric models Two examples of parametric models made during University. individual project
In these pictures I would show the process that has led to the definition of two projects previously shown: A-Tinnitus and Dragon. The first model was created by the combined use of Grasshopper 3D, Rhinoceros and Processing software. The standard panel, which composes the base cell of the system of panels, is characterized by a series of pyramids. The Pyramids represents the interactive part of the model; in fact the height of it changes due to the sound waves. The sound captured
by a microphone passes through Processing software which elaborates the receiving data, then it sends it to the Grasshopper model throw GHowL plug-in. The data affects directly the length of the height moving the vertex of the pyramid far or close. In the second project Grasshopper 3D software is used to design a complex glass faรงade. The faรงade is composed by a series of square glass plates each twisted on the basis of two axes and shifted, overlapping each other forming a scale surface.
