OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: PARADORES ROUTES
“When you set sail for Ithaca, wish for the road to be long, full of adventures, full of knowledge”. Constantin P. Kavafy Long and slow, we would add, as most of the important details are so difficult to spot when one is in a hurry… we can fly, but the magic is on the road, or better to say: in the path. Get off the mainstream and try secondary roads, where you will discover a true Spain. Paradores offer a unique trip proposal, as they bring you both a truly inspiring accommodation and an amazing gastronomical discovery. Inspiring we call to overnight in a medieval castle, 15th Century monastery or Renaissance palace… no joke: your room might be an old monks cell (fortunately now fully renovated and with all facilities you might need) and the breakfast room located in a great Romanesque patio. is is what conveys Paradores its great character: history and art are so present that you feel you are in the middle of the action, centuries back. Gastronomical discoveries because the Paradores have maintained centenary traditions to present you local dishes like you would never expect for you to fully experience what Spanish gastronomy looks like. Everyday a new memory for you to enjoy… We present you several routes to unwind the secrets of rarely walked paths. You will drive your own rental car to reach small villages and less known destinations, where a great deal of surprises are awaiting you. Let the slowness guide you along the way and learn to stop to capture the moment. We are sure you will greatly appreciate it.

PARADORES ROUTES: ALONG THE VÍA DE LA PLATA
In Roman times, and especially during the reigns of the emperors Trajan and Hadrian, a grand access route was created in the west of the peninsula that linked the Cantabrian coast with the lands of the south of Hispania. Goods, troops, traders and travellers moved in continuous transit along this trail, which favoured the spreading of Roman culture, its language and way of life, at the same time as facilitating the control of the territory that the administration of the Roman Empire required. is trail continued to be used over the centuries, both by Arabs as well as Christians during the Middle Ages, and went on to play an important role in the communications network of the Iberian Peninsula. Today we can still use this way to feel a real Spain like no other: cities and villages of great charm and untouched beauty will unveil their secrets for us as we drive along. DAY 1 SevillA - zAFrA Pick up our rental car in Sevilla, either at the airport or at the railway station, and start journey northwards crossing the Sierra de Aracena Natural Park. Soon we get to Zafra, the “small Sevilla”, where we let our imagination flow as we enter our Parador today, located in a 15th century castle. Not so many Paradores can offer such great patio or impressive walk through the corridors of the first floor. Zafra carries a rich past dating back to pre-Roman dates, where Lusitanians and Vettones would live out of a wealthy valley, but it was probably
8
towards the end of the Arab Empire, around 11th century, when the city claims its strategic situation along the Via de la Plata, which privileged them in trade. Today we can visit some parts of the old walls, the two squares that used to be the zouks of the city and some very beautiful churches, where still you can feel the richness of the Zafra inhabitants Would you still feel like discovering, the Portugal border is just within one hour drive, so you might think of visiting the very interesting city of EVORA, with nice Roman ruins. Dinner is served today in the restaurant

DAY S
DAY 2 zAFrA - MériDA - plASenciA After enjoying a great breakfast, drive today to Plasencia, right in the heart of the Jerte Valley, where the best cherries of Spain are handpickled and delivered to remote places like Japan or Saudi Arabia. On the way to Plasencia we make a stop in Mérida to admire an impressive city carrying a wide Roman past. We can visit today one of the best preserved Roman complexes of Spain, counting with Theater (which up to today hosts every year drama representations of Classic pieces during the Summer), Anphitheater, museum, Forum and much more. Continue your drive and arrive in your Parador to celebrate your well gained dinner today.
DAY 3 plASenciA - cácereS - plASenciA Plasencia, founded in 13th Century, the “noble, bold and haughty”, will be a nice surprise along your route. But your visit would not be incomplete if you stay in Plasencia only and miss a great city like Caceres, whose old town is listed in Unesco World Heritage. Ruled by powerful rival factions from 14th to 16th century, impressive testimonies of the past splendor are its fortified houses, palaces and towers. Another interesting option for the day would be to visit the nearby National Park of Monfragüe, crossed by the Tajo river on its way to Portugal. Return to Plasencia for dinner and overnight.
PARADORES ROUTES: ALONG THE VÍA DE LA PLATA
Your Parador, the old Santo Domingo monastery, shares the walls and rooms of this exceptional site with the holy and not so holy Dominican friars who inhabited the building by the express and generous will of the Count and Countess of Zuñiga DAY 4 plASenciA - león After breakfast we start our journey on our way to León. So many interesting sites we will find today that we better start early in the morning: - Salamanca, again listed in Unesco Heritage, with one of the oldest universities of whole Europe, and whose historic center offers a caleidoscopio of Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments - Ávila, with best preserved middle age walls and home town of St. Teresa
- Astorga: the old Roman city of Asturica Augusta, with small by great old town. It owns one of the only two buildings created by the genial architect Antoni Gaudi outside Catalonia - Las Médulas: Another Unesco site. In the 1st century A.D. the Roman Imperial authorities began to exploit the gold deposits of this region in north-west Spain, using a technique based on hydraulic power. After two centuries of working the deposits, the Romans withdrew, leaving a devastated landscape. Since there was no subsequent industrial activity, the dramatic traces of this remarkable ancient technology are visible everywhere as sheer faces in the mountainsides and the vast areas of tailings, now used for agriculture But our greatest surprise will be found on our arrival in León, as we check in in our Parador today, the unique Hostal de San Marcos, a 5*
accommodation with unforgettable Renaissance fassade and better interior Dinner and overnight in León.
DAY 5 león Get your breakfast and devote your day to León, whose great cathedral, “humid quarter” and more will fill up both your spirit and your stomach

Picturesque villages like Mieres, Aller, Lena or Riosa will offer a memorable stop on our way where to savor local cheeses, home made cyder or tasty stew. Arrival in Gijón and relax today in a different environment: a centenary mill inside a park, which modelates a warm and relaxing atmosphere for your rest.
DAY 7 gijón - DepArTure Breakfast at the Parador and explore today the city of Gijón. The testimony of Roman authors has come down to us, in which they relate how they saw and lived with the Asturs, whom they called “highlanders”. Here we have a fragment from the Geography of Strabo (75 bc - 20 ad), in which he discusses the customs of the northern people, including the Asturs: “All the highlanders are sober, they drink water, sleep on the ground and wear their hair long and loose, as is the custom of women, although when they fight, they tie a band around their foreheads” Return your car at the railway station or continue to the near airport of Oviedo for your flight to onwards destination.
