OLYMPICS Is the USA the real Olympic ‘Owner’? The Olympic most powerful nations in a more balanced and deep analysis Every Olympiad we see, hear and read about the Olympics superpowers, the struggle between USA, Russia and China to rule the total podiums, to be the medals’ kings and/or queens. The measurement is done grossly; the media see the medal count and give this ‘award’ to the country that gained more metals. Nevertheless, when you explore, go deep and research in a detailed way the medals’ origin we probably get a different conclusion. A sport superpower should be claimed and prize awarded with that via the domain in the highest number of sports, not particularly the number of medals. Why? This has an easy answer. The three pivotal sports, swimming, athletics and gymnastics, award a much superior number of medals in comparison to other Olympic sports, which misrepresent, misleads the final outcome, when you look at it globally, only by the numbers. So, let’s divide this into 28 sports, considering the current Olympic federations, see the medal table and square it equally, then let’s watch the Olympic diplomas per sport federation to truly get the sports superpower. This is still not a completely just definition, we should add the investment of each country in sports and in the Olympic projects, the number of athletes each Olympic committee sent to Rio 2016, to get an even more accurate figure, however this analysis will surely give a better perception of the true sports superpower Olympic committees. The sum will be done in the usual terms for the classifications, 8-1 points for 1st to 8th places in the diplomas’ table, 5-3-1 for the medals table.

Arranging a method, a system to measure the performance wasn’t easy. It was decided to equally divide each federation, so 1/28, which means 0.036, then the impact of each Olympic Committee (percentage of medals and diplomas obtained) will be divided by the above mentioned number and the sum of all that will bring more light into the true Olympic superpowers. Basketball had USA win both competitions, as usual, with Spain and Serbia dividing the podium both in men and women, exchanging spots, the Serbs 2nd in men and 3rd in women, the Spaniards vice-versa. Volleyball and Beach Volleyball witnessed the home side Brazil winning two golds and a silver medal, the USA got three bronzes, Germany and China were the other gold winners.

The Equestrian events gave Germany almost half the point medals available, winning half the competitions disputed and getting six of the 12 medals open for grabs. Great Britain and France got the other wins and scored each three podiums, alongside USA. 25

The football tournaments gave the first Olympic men gold for Brazil, the only title lacking in its history, while in the women history was also made, but for Germany, only the third country to win the Olympic football event, after Norway got it once and the USA grabbing it four times and never missing a final until 2016 where it was out of the medals contention. Golf wasn’t an Olympic event since 1904. Disagreements between the English and Scottish Golf Associations led to no tournament in 1908 and it didn’t return since… until 2016. Although there were a lot of dropouts it was a surprising event and names like Sergio García and Bubba Watson finished only in the 8th spot. The win was British in the men and South Korean in the women. Mikkel Hansen got his Olympic gold for the Danish handball, overcoming the powerful French side in the final, world champions’ holders and Olympic champions in 2008 and 2012. Germany got the bronze. In the women event Russia prevailed over France and the bronze went to Norway. Russia, Ukraine and Mexico filled the podium in the men Modern Pentathlon. The women to take medals to their homeland were from Australia, France and Poland. The paradise islands of Fiji got their first ever medal in Rio 2016 and it was gold, debuting alongside the Rugby Sevens and winning the men event. The Brits and the South Africans were the other medalists and Japan was 4th. New Zealand, dominant nation in the Sevens Circuit, was the biggest disappointment, finishing only 5th. The women awarded Australia, New Zealand and Canada in this return of rugby after almost 100 years of absence, but now in the sevens variant. The Brownlee brothers continue to dominate the Triathlon and this time there wasn’t a Spanish ace to prevent the British pair to accomplish the 1-2 ahead of South African Henri Schoeman. USA’s Jorgensen won the women triathlon, beating the Swiss Nicola Spirig Hug and the Brit Holland. Serena Williams didn’t win another medal, and a couple was expected, however Venus despite her health issues got a fifth one. All the tennis events had drama, lots of surprises and the honoring of the likes of Del Potro, after years trying to overcome a severe wrist injury, Hingis and Bacsinszky, the ‘Swiss Miss’, the little genius that ruled girls tennis in the mid and late 90’s and another Swiss girl, almost forced out of tennis due to a foot injury that nearly cost her even the natural walk, but returned amazingly and is now among the best, Mattek-Sands and her unique way of being and appearing, Andy Murray, who defended his title from London and keeps on surprising everyone with his words, an idol to worship. Monica Puig, who gave Puerto Rico the first ever Olympic gold and was the biggest surprise of the tennis tournaments; she’s a girl that has an island at her feet now.

Tennis is one of the sports with the quarters meaning 5th spot in the diploma’s issue. There were 19 Olympic Committees getting diplomas from the tennis events, some of them unexpectedly like India, Canada, Austria, Romania or Switzerland, especially from the players/pairs that get them.

The track cycling events give Great Britain the control over the global cycling medals table, getting over a quarter of the entire medal points. Uzbekistan got seven medals in the Olympic boxing, Cuba and France won six, Kazakhstan and Russia five. Cuba is a classic in the boxing, like Ireland once was, now the former ‘Asian-Soviet’ states making a name in the ‘Noble Art’. Note for Finland, once a sports power nation, namely in athletics, but also in the gymnastics, wrestling, shooting, totaling over 300 medals just in the Summer Olympics, only grabbed one in 2016 and it happened in the women boxing.

Regardless of the inevitable evolution of sports and the need to keep up with the public’s desires, even if that is so very subjective, the classics are known as classics for some reason, whether it’s movies, it’s music, it’s any other form of art, a classic is timeless and fencing is clearly a classic. For all it’s known there isn’t a threat to Olympic fencing, although taking Modern Pentathlon out of the Olympic program, a sport which truly shows what a versatile sportsman or sportswoman should be, swimming, shooting, riding, fencing, running, remembering the military old days needs but also the ability to sword, to shoot, to swim, to ride, to run, a dream for any sports lover to do, can of course mean that other classics, which aren’t so talked about, that aren’t so mediatic in comparison to others, not due to the global impact, not due to the sports impact, but just some lobbying and fashionable things, can also vanish from the Olympic schedule.

Judo is a Japanese domain and the country of the rising sun scored 12 medals out of 14 possible. Naturally, contrary to other sports, usually the fighting ones only have one spot per NOC (National Olympic Committee) which naturally affects also the final outcome in terms of deep impact in the final table. On the other hand, the limit of one athlete per weight, per country, allows the 26 NOC achieving Olympic medal status, 41 totaling the number of Olympic Committees getting at least one diploma.

Rowing is a British sport, everyone that knows a little about sport has heard about the famous Oxford-Cambridge historical rowing competition on the Thames. The strong rowing athletes in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, France or Italy, alongside USA, doesn’t disguise the fact that the World Rowing Federation should work harder to bring more nations into the sport, it’s not positive for an Olympic sport to have events with less than eight nations taking part in it and that happened in three of the events (both the eight and the women quadruple skull), truth be told, these are boats that need heavy numbers but either they get enough nations doing it – and the eight is the most famous rowing boat of all, precisely due to the regatta between Oxford and Cambridge, or it should, unfortunately, be out of the Olympic program. It’s strange that countries like China or Japan didn’t present eight boats. The Russian had 19 rowers suspended from the competition which also contributed to lesser boats. There’s only South Africa from African countries. Apart from US and Canada, only Cuba and Mexico got diplomas, one each, from the rest of America and Asia also only had China boats getting diplomas. This means that the rowing responsible parts need to further develop the sport worldwide and take it outside their comfort zone. The German rowing was also below expectations, as were the Romanians, formerly one of the rowing powers, particularly in the women boats, historically having 38 Olympic medals. The Danish crews are also far from past glories, grabbing two medals but no other diploma.

Historical rulers in the Olympic shooting medals, the US got only three, way below the achievements of both Italy and China, less that the ones Russia and Germany won also. Another classic sport, wrestling comes from Ancient Greece and is one of the pictured images in surviving vases and other artefacts from the Ancient Olympics. The freestyle wrestling and the Greco Roman wrestling saw Russia win nine medals, as did Azerbaijan. The Japanese seven medals, four gold and three silver ones also made a big impact. 27 NOC got to climb into the Olympic podium and 42 NOC got to win at least one diploma. 35

FINA rules the swimming competitions, water polo, diving, synchronized swimming, marathon swimming and the pool swimming. The latter has over 30 events, so almost 100 medals to offer, which more than doubles all the team sports put together and can easily create, when you have a high domination from one or two nations, a false illusion of global domain in the Olympics, as does with the athletics. The experiences with mixed relays, not only mixing styles – although that needs to be defined on which gender does what two styles – but also mixing in one style, have been very positive and it makes no sense to have both 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle relays in men and women and having no other – apart the medley – relays, it would be much more fairer and interesting to choose one of the two freestyle relays to maintain and double it (4x100 freestyle) but doing mixed, two men and two women, or having the 4x200 freestyle for men and women and the 4x100 freestyle has a mixed relay, or vice-versa. When you have such different styles of swimming, demanding efforts from different muscles, etc., and you observe some swimmers win so many medals you need to rethink the entire program. It’s strange to double 100 and 200, opting out of the 50 meters. It would make more sense to choose 50 and 200 or 100 and 400 in each of the styles where only two individual events are disputed, to really define between sprinters and long distance swimmers.

Alongside swimming and gymnastics, athletics is the vertex of the Modern Olympics, is the first basis of modern sports tales, history, development and the relation between ancient and modern Olympics, going back to the Battle of Marathon and from there linking into the rebirth of the Olympics and the ideal and ideas of Pierre de Coubertin and the group that reestablished the gathering of the known world sporting community and heroes.
USA grabbed 13 of the 47 gold medals awarded in the athletics events, plus 10 silver medals and nine bronze medals, taking full advantage of the Russian athletics suspension to get even more awards, both in terms of podiums and naturally the diplomas obtained.

So, after detailing each Olympic sport Federation’s medals and diplomas, let’s see the global numbers per NOC and Sport. It’s important to note that, for instance, Russia was barred from presenting the athletics squad, a lot of Russian rowers, canoeists, etc. were also suspended, there are several national federations suspended by the IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) and issues like these weren’t taken into the equation and each NOC performance per sport is divided by the total number of Olympic federations. Another very relevant issue to underline is the fact that, apart from the hockey – and the water polo, this one under the FINA ruling, Great Britain doesn’t have a unified team in the team sports, so it isn’t able to enter in the basketball, football, handball and volleyball events. The first table highlights the number of sports in which each NOC had medals and/or diplomas, again underlining the fact that the sports categories are divided into the international federations they are ruled by. For instance, all cycling events, all part and ruled by the UCI (Union Cycliste International), road, BMX, track and Mountain Bike are all in one cluster, cycling. So, the total number of International Federations participating in the Olympics 2016 is 28 and the below shown numbers present the number of those where each NOC got medals and/or diplomas. The first and second percentages represent the impact of each NOC in the total number of sport federations, the third one respect to the effectiveness diplomas/medals. After detailing the percentage of medals and diplomas each NOC got from every Olympic sport Federation in the above tables, the one below shows the real impact of each NOC in the global 2016 Olympics, measuring each sport federation on equal terms of importance (hence 1/28 which stands for 0.036) and the sum of that to get a more accurate number on the real power of every NOC in the Olympic sports set. 119 (plus Kuwait) of the 205 participating NOC were able to take home at least one diploma from the 2016 Summer Olympics. It’s also important to bear in mind the fact that the team sports, which award two medals per NOC, men and women, have the sides that qualify entering with 12, 14, 18 or so players depending on the team sport. This increases heavily the number of athletes present with no direct relation to the possible medals and diplomas obtainable.

So, at the end of this much more deep study than the mere presentation of the global Olympic medals table, it’s proven that Great Britain & Northern Ireland had a higher importance in the medals table if all sports’ federations are considered alike and measured under the same comparative importance value. The USA, nevertheless, is the country with more podium presences in different sports, 20 out of the 28 Olympic federations and 24 out of 28 in terms of Olympic diplomas. On a final note, it’s curious the reading press all over the world or at least in some countries like Portugal, Ireland, UK, etc. present the financial numbers. The country’s investment versus the Olympic medal(s) obtained, neglecting the entire four or eight years projects and all the results in-between, World Championships, Continental Championships, World Cups… completely misleading the public, as if the ‘Olympic investment’ was only for Olympic purposes. Each and every NOC should present to the public, streaming live or making it available without the media filters, the complete results obtained in the four years duration of each Olympiad, per sport, per athlete or team, in order to enlighten the public, which got the impression that Portugal invested 17 million euros to get one Olympic medal, the cost of that medal was 17 million euros, and in Ireland the cost of the Olympic medals was 18 million euros. If the Olympic movement and each NOC don’t clarify the numbers and the investment full purposes and achievements, further than just the mandatory financial reports, people who aren’t that much informed, that don’t follow each sport on a regular basis, only paying attention to it every four year, will turn against the athletes, against each sport, claiming it’s a waste of money.
