“MANCHESTER OF

CATALUNYA” Poblenou was part of the Cerda eixample plan. However the development of the district of Poblenou was different to the rest of exiample because of its location close to the sea and encased between two railway lines. Poblenou evolved as an active neighbourhood because of its relative proximity to the port facilities and the existence of a railway station facilitated the development of factories, warehouses and workshops of all types and sizes being nicknamed “Manchester of

Catalunya”. The railway tracks, the pedestrian crossings at different levels and the chimneys characterized the district of Poblenou. The old Poblenou has been re-branded by modern development of technology and innovation but the old spirit of the neighbourhood is still visible on its streets.

THE ROAD TO ROME

Pere IV was the old road to Rome from Barcino which made it the urban backbone of the plains of Barcelona, before the expansion of the city. Even after the expansion Pere IV kept its importance and was respected by Cerda’s new plan. Pere IV is not only important urbanisticly but also geographically since it acts like the border between good and bad soil.

roadnetwork is still visible today in Poblenou as well in the block of the project. This forms a axis tilted with respect to the axis of Eixample. The project therefore aimes to use both of these axis to define the volumes of the buildings.

THE NEW INNOVATION DISTRICT 22 @, emerged in 2000 as an initiative of the Barcelona City Council to transform 200 hectares of industrial land in the Poblenou neighbourhood into an innovative productive district with modern spaces for the strategic concentration of knowledge-intensive activities. To achieve this objective, a new compact city model is created, where companies coexist with universities, research,

training

and

technology

transfer centres, as well as housing, facilities and green areas. In

this

way,

a

new

economic

model is defined based on the development of five sectoral clusters: audiovisual media, information and communication technologies, energy, design and medical technologies, and on the execution of various strategic projects that facilitate the growth of companies,

creativity,

networking,

attracting and retaining talent and access to innovation and technology, among others. Since 2001, more than 4,500 new companies have been located, with a total of 56,000 employees in the area.

THE FUTURE OF BARCELONA The objective is to achieve a healthy public space, greener, fairer and safer, which favours social relations and the local economy. A road hierarchy has been carried out that allows freeing some streets of road traffic, creating a network of green axes and squares where pedestrians have priority. This network allows the creation of a new map of the city in which citizens are the protagonists.

STRUCTURE AND SPACE The structure forms the space by towers in the form of U-shaped walls which

acts like giant pillars for the project. Inside of these giant pillars spaces are created. The

vertical

towers

are

divided

horizontally by the slabs to work in a more net-like behaviour which makes the building more homogeneous in order to prevents buckling. A perimeter wall run alongside the adjacent buildings to stabilize the building.

Rainwater and wastewater are two independent systems: Rain water: Water is evacuated from the roofs via gullies that leads to vertical shafts. In the end of these shafts (as well as with pipe connections) cleanouts are placed to assure easy cleaning. Buried pipes on ground floor reach the subterranean water tank which store water for public toilet usage. The water tank can be drained into the urban sewerage system. Registration box and siphon are located right before the urban sewerage connection. WATER SUPPLY IMPLEMENTATION (CTE DB HS4)

Three connection pipes from the urban net are buried (1 co-lving, 2 co-work, 3 restaurant) until it reach the meter rooms with the general water supply valve and meter. After the meter six main pipes reach each sector via the false ceiling. The sectors work independently with valves and have been further subdivided into areas with corresponding valves for easy control and maintenance. Similarly, the wet-rooms always have a its own room-valve. Each equipment also have its own valve to ensure its independence. Interior pipes will be made by PVC plastic, placed in the false ceiling and uphold by dilators every 15 meters in length. Pipes are covered by insulation (Armaflex) to keep its temperature and prevent condensation damage in the false ceiling.

CO-LIVING/ROOF: The connection cable reach the service fuse box (CGP) which will be installed in a single prefabricated box at the edge of the building on a concrete base (grounded). The main line reaches the electricity room on ground floor via false ceiling where it connects to the active and reactive meters. Before reaching the meters the line has a general switch. The meters are connected to a battery and to the general panel that contains switches for the whole subpanels that it connects to. The three subpanels are integrated inside the wall frame in the common area of the ground floor. (No transformation vault is needed in the area - Poblenou has a central transformation vault which will be used by the project.)

RTV (radio, TV) and SAI (wireless broadband) services or wireless access services, enter the building through 3 antennas (RACK) that connects to the 3 RITUs on ground floor, which are ventilated by implemented fans.
