S
ix young Long Island musicians have been designated Tilles Scholars, following a competitive audition process held under the auspices of Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. Back-to-School Drive Helps Area Families Sponsored by Family & Children’s Association
F
amily & Children’s Association, Long Island’s human service agency, is accepting donations of new, back-to-school supplies and clothing. This Back-toSchool Drive is part of an annual effort by Family & Children’s to help financially struggling Nassau County families make ends meet and prepare area children for a successful school year. This year, the agency is asking everyone to consider donating sneakers, sweatshirts and jeans along with the pencils, backpacks and notebooks they’ve given in the past. Or, if you don’t have time to shop but want to help, visit www.familyandchildrens.org/donate. Donations can be brought to Family & Children’s, 100 E. Old Country Rd., Suite 25, 2nd floor, Mineola. According to Joyce Mullen, Family & Children’s Communications Director, “Families are really struggling right now and we’d like to help them get their children and teenagers ready for school with adequate supplies and new school clothes. We’re asking our friends and neighbors to pick up extra notebooks, sneakers, markers or calculators while they’re out shopping for their own children and grandchildren. This is a concrete way to make a difference in our area.” The mission of Family and Children’s Association is to protect and strengthen Long Island’s most vulnerable children, seniors, families and communities. The organization offers assistance to those who are experiencing social, emotional and/or economic challenges. Through a coordinated network of individual programs and referral services, along with numerous community and in-home care programs, the agency focuses on the underserved populations in Nassau and Suffolk counties. For information on Family and Children’s, please contact Joyce Mullen at jamullen@familyandchildrens.org or 516-746-0350 ext. 335.

From a coffee maker, to a laundry hamper to a basic tool kit, there a number of basic items essential for dorm living.
Heading to College? Ten Dorm Room Musts
A
s teens get ready to head off to college, chances are you’ll hear more discussion about what to pack than what courses to take. Striking a balance between bringing the essentials for living on one’s own and fitting it all into a dorm room not much bigger than a walk-in closet, can be daunting. The best strategy is to travel with the necessities, and then order additional items once you’ve checked out the lay of the land. In many dorms, for instance, students have access to a communal microwave and television, so these popular items may not be necessities. Incoming students may also want to wait and see what their roommates have.” The top 10 dorm room must-haves are: 1. Coffee maker - Long nights of studying have turned many incoming freshman into coffee drinkers. For any student who doesn’t want to walk to the corner coffee shop whenever she gets tired, a coffee maker is pretty much an essential. 2. Alarm-clock radio/CD player - What coffee can’t accomplish, an alarm clock must. With space at a premium, combo items are wonderfully practical. And since most dorm policies prohibit playing a large stereo at full volume, a smaller unit is perfect. 3. Laundry hamper - Wheeled hampers are great for lugging heavy clothes back and forth from the laundry room. In addition to storing dirty clothes, a hamper can double as a storage space or an impromptu end table. 4. Shelves or closet organizer - Few students have ever found enough room in their dorm dresser to hold all their sweaters, jeans and other bulky items. Shelving units and shoe racks can provide
a lot of extra storage space and help curb the urge to use the dorm room floor as a second closet. Another nifty invention is the door-mounted jewelry organizer, which takes up less space than a jewelry box, and has lots of hooks for keeping necklaces, bracelets, scarves and other accessories handy and tangle-free. 5. Rolling storage cart - A cart with drawers is great for holding all those awkward-to-store items: sheets, hair styling tools, hats and gloves, even food. And, since it has wheels, it can easily be moved out of the way or positioned to use as a temporary writing surface or nightstand. 5. Fan - Even if a dorm room has airconditioning, it may not be reliable. A free-standing or window fan is a good backup. 6. Stocked toolbox - There’s no more borrowing dad’s tool kit when you’re away from home. At minimum, a college toolbox should contain the dorm life survival essentials: a regular and Phillipshead screwdriver, hammer, nails, screws and wrench. Having some putty or spackle to repair walls at the end of the year can be key to saving deposit money. 7. Dishes for two - Even if a student has a meal plan, he’ll want dishes in his dorm room for snacks, take-out and eating on the run. Remember forks, knives, spoons, plates, bowls, cups and mugs. And don’t forget the can opener. 8. Sheets and towels - Check with the college housing office for the correct sheet size to buy for the mattress, and always include a pillow. 9. Sandals - Anybody who’s ever shared a public bathroom will understand how important these are. (ARA)

Try to pack light – a backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the student’s body weight. Organize the pack to make use of all compartments and pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. Choose a pack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles and may increase curvature of the spine.

ood social skills are critical to successful functioning in life. While socialization may come naturally for some children, for many this is not so. However, just as academic subjects can be taught and reinforced, social skills can be as well. The Long Island Center for Social Skills (LICSS), located in Port Washington, helps children acquire the necessary skills to become more socially competent, as well as self-confident. Cara Greene, LCSW, Director of LICSS, believes that all children can develop the social competencies that help them become happy, well adjusted and confident. “Our focus is on enhancing social and emotional development while providing social skill training for those with social disabilities,” Greene states. LICSS programs are for those who are typical or have learning disabilities, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, High-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders, emotionally handicapping conditions and others who show social incompetencies. If your child: • appears lonely, feels left out, has no one to play with at recess or lunch; • is rarely called for a play date; • complains that “no one likes me,” or “everyone is mean to me,” or “they al-
assau Community College (NCC) is in the final stages of preparing its first-ever alumni directory, called Nassau Community College Alumni Today. The college is partnering with Harris Connect, a leading publisher of alumni directories. Nassau’s directory will include historical details, photos, alumni essays, career and contact information about thousands of NCC graduates. It will be available in both hard copy and CD format. Over 125,000 graduates have gotten their degree from Nassau Community College since its inception. Former Nassau students have gone on to become
doctors, lawyers and scientists, as well as business, political and media leaders. The NCC alumni directory will enable users to get in touch with former friends and classmates, as well as make professional connections with other college graduates in their field. There’s still time for Nassau graduates to include their information in Nassau Community College Alumni Today. Those interested in including their information—or to order a copy of the directory—should contact the Nassau Community College Office of Development at development@ncc.edu or 516.572.8972.

Ira Wolf, the president of PowerPrep and the author of several books including Barron’s best selling books on preparing for the PSAT, SAT, and GRE, has been invited to give two free talks at Barnes & Noble. The talks are entitled “Everything You Need to Know about the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, and will be given at the Barnes & Noble store in Manhasset at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24 and at the Barnes & Noble store in Carle Place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25. These talks are appropriate for all students –– from ninth through 12th grade –– and, of course, for their parents. All incoming juniors, and most sophomores, will be taking the PSAT in October, and now is the time for them to learn exactly what the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests are all about and how and when to prepare for them. These talks will provide valuable advice for students and their parents and explain why it is so important to do some preparation before taking the PSAT. The talks will provide important information about the ACT, an exam that is being taken by an increasing number of students on Long Island. Dr. Wolf will explain the differences between the ACT and SAT and give advice that will help students decide whether the ACT is appropriate for them. No student has to take the ACT, but all students who plan to take it must prepare for it. The talks will also be very helpful for seniors who took the SAT in the spring and are thinking about retaking it in October or November. Dr. Wolf and will give them important test-taking advice and will explain how the College Board’s score choice option should affect their decision. The National Association for College Admission Counseling released a report in 2009 stating that average gains as a result of commercial test preparation are about 30 points on the SAT (all three parts combined) and less than one point on the ACT. By contrast, at the talk Dr. Wolf will give seniors advice that can
help them raise their SAT scores by 100 to 200 points or more. Finally, all students need to understand the role that SAT Subject Tests play in the college admissions process. During the talk, Dr. Wolf will answer questions such as: “Who should take Subject Tests?, “When should they be taken?, “How many Subject Tests do students need?, “How should students prepare for them? and most important, “What is the effect of the College Board’s Score Choice policy on Subject Tests? Parents who want to know more about the entire testing process, how these tests have changed and what they can do to help their children prepare are encouraged to attend, whether or not their children can join them. Finally, the talks will also cover a few of the most important test-taking strategies that Dr. Wolf covers in his books and that are taught to the students in PowerPrep’s courses. He will explain why learning these tactics is essential for anyone who wants to achieve his or her maximum potential on the PSAT, SAT, or ACT. Every year, students who master these strategies raise their scores by hundreds of points. Of course, the talks are free and are open to anyone who wants to know more about these college admissions tests. Each talk will include a question-and-answer session covering all aspects of test preparation. In addition, Dr. Wolf will remain after the talks to answer questions individually. This is an excellent opportunity for all high school students and their parents to get all of their questions answered. Dr. Wolf, a nationally-known expert in test preparation, is the founder of PowerPrep, Inc. Through courses and individual and group tutoring sessions, PowerPrep helps students prepare for the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject Tests. For information on these talks and/or on PowerPrep’s courses, call Dr. Wolf at (516) 484-4468.
Of course, the talks are free and are open to anyone who wants to know more about these college admissions tests. Each talk will include a question-andanswer session covering all aspects of test preparation.

The Secondary Collegiate Articulated Learning Experience Program (SCALE) offered by the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University enables qualified high school juniors and seniors to earn college credit at a significantly discounted rate. The credits can then be transferred to C.W. In some instances, students can reduce their college education studies and expenses by one year and enter college as sophomores. For the 2011-2012 school year, a college course costs $390. “The potential cost savings of SCALE courses are extraordinary,” said Joanne Graziano, assistant provost of admissions and recruitment. “Students can earn up to 30 college credits at nearly 85 percent off

Hofstra NS-LIJ School of Medicine Opens Doors to First Class of Students
A
fter more than three years of planning, discussion and research on the part of hundreds of people, the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine is ready to welcome its inaugural class of 40 students to the school. The School of Medicine is New York State’s first new allopathic medical school in 40 years and the nation’s 133rd medical school. The students will began their educational journey on July 25, with a weeklong orientation. Classes began on Aug. 1. The school received more than 4,000 applications for entry into the inaugural class. The 20 women and 20 men range in age (from 22 to 36 years old) and were selected from more than 700 applicants who were interviewed over a five-month period. The students come from more than 38 different hometowns, 14 different states and 33 different universities. They possess undergraduate degrees in a wide variety of major concentrations, ranging from English to chemistry to anthropology. “Today these students take the first bold step on a journey to become the physicians of tomorrow,” said Dr. Lawrence Smith, Dean of the School of Medicine. “They represent a unique and diverse cross section of educational and life experiences and were selected not only for their test scores, but equally for their character and core values.” “From the shared vision of a new medical school on Long Island, to welcoming our first class of forty students today, in less than four years we and our partner North Shore-LIJ Health System have succeeded in making this new and innovative medical school a reality,” said Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz. “Today I speak for the entire Hofstra University community when I say we are proud and pleased to welcome our newest students to campus. It is a great day for our institutions and our region.” “With this inaugural class, we are bringing in 40 bright, talented individuals who recognize that we are offering an extraordinary opportunity to create an entirely new model for the way medicine is practiced in this country,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Most of them had other offers to attend more traditional medical schools, but they chose to come here – and make history by becoming part of a new breed of physicians who understand the importance of teamwork and communication in the future of health care delivery.” During orientation week, students met with the School of Medicine faculty and became familiar with the 48,000 squarefoot state-of-the-art School of Medicine facility on the Hofstra University campus; Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine The School of Medicine was formed in response to the Association of American

Medical Colleges’ 2006 recommendation to increase medical school enrollment by 30 percent by 2015. Hofstra University, Long Island’s largest and most prestigious private university, and North Shore-LIJ Health System, one of the largest health systems in the nation, responded to this need by establishing the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. The School of Medicine is an academic unit of Hofstra University.
“Today these students take the first bold step on a journey to become the physicians of tomorrow. They represent a unique and diverse cross section of educational and life experiences and were selected not only for their test scores, but equally for their character and core values.” - Dr. Lawrence Smith, Dean of the School of Medicine
The Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine represents a unique and equal partnership between two outstanding Long Island institutions. This union enables the School of Medicine to provide excellent clinical training, research opportunities and academic infrastructure to its students. The hallmark of the School of Medicine’s educational model is an integrated curriculum that blends humanistic medicine with sophisticated science and molds students into caring, patient-centered physicians who are able to translate knowledge into effective, empathic action. The combination of meaningful and instructive clinical experiences and academic learning is designed to create compassionate and creative physicians who understand how to think quickly and without all the answers at hand. This is critical in medicine today. Learning takes place both on Hofstra’s campus in Hempstead, New York and throughout North Shore-LIJ’s vast health system. The school’s centerpiece is a newly renovated 48,000 square-foot facility that previously housed the New York Jets summer training facility. The building features a 108-seat capacity Medical Education Theater; dozens of small group meeting areas; a Health Sciences Library and a full service café. The Structure Lab is a state-of-the-art environment that offers students the most advanced tools to learn gross and microscopic anatomy coupled with clinically relevant pathology and imaging.
Additional learning sites include the world-renowned Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Learning and Innovation, Patient Safety Institute, and the Bioskills Education Center. These advanced learning facilities feature state-ofthe-art human-simulation laboratories with digitally enhanced and controlled mannequins and partial- and full-body task trainers, standardized patient rooms, and high-fidelity surgical skills training stations. In these facilities, students learn and strengthen clinical skills and manage hypothetical patient cases as members of a multidisciplinary health care team. At the School of Medicine, a student’s clinical experience will be unparalleled. North Shore-LIJ offers a wide spectrum of high-quality services and world-class facilities and will serve as the consummate extended classroom. The health system is a model of a patient-centric continuum of care. The system includes 15 hospitals across Long Island, and in Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, Nearly 1000 faculty members, organized into 24 departments, will guide the students on their learning journey. Founding Dean of the School of Medicine Dr. Lawrence Smith, is a nationally recognized visionary leader in medicine and medical education. Dr. Smith also serves as Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, thus ensuring a strong partnership, as well as a seamless integration of classroom and clinical experience.

Area Colleges Provide Top Notch Education Close to Home Farmingdale State College Farmingdale State College will celebrate its 100th Anniversary during the 2011-12 academic year. Centennial events will take place through the year and culminate in April with a ceremony to celebrate the founding of the college that month in 1912. The college has grown from a two-year agriculture college to a four-year college of applied science and technology offering 37 degree programs. Farmingdale will soon be offering its first graduate-level degrees. New bachelor degree programs include Sport Management and Telecommunications Technology. The 380-acre campus is being transformed through a six-year project with
$185 million of construction that is visible just about everywhere on campus. Of particular interest is the new Campus Center, scheduled to open in fall 2012 and designed to be the focal point for the college community. The School of Business will soon consolidate its departments in one new building. Renovations to the athletics complex, new roads, walkways and a new Children’s Center are also planned or under construction. “I am particularly proud of the faculty’s responsiveness to creating new degrees and minors in response to regional needs and our students’ career aspirations,” President W. Hubert Keen said. “Because of carefully designed academic programs that take

regional business and industry needs into account, Farmingdale students find local employers anxious to provide internships and research opportunities. Our graduates enjoy great success in finding jobs.” Implementation of Students First, an initiative set into motion two years ago, is progressing on target. Receipt of over $3.1 million in Department of Education grants means a more robust orientation for students, more student advising and cultural activities. In addition, a new Director of Residence Life means an integrated approach to campus life – combining learning how to be a successful student while having fun and making lifelong friends.
Molloy College Molloy is a private college providing a value-centered, multi-dimensional liberal arts education with more than 50 quality undergraduate and graduate academic programs, including a new doctoral program in Nursing. A Molloy education is “grounded in the Catholic faith, with ideals of truth and respect for the dignity and worth of every individual.” Its faculty is accomplished, yet approachable, leading small classes where students are encouraged to think critically and explore creatively. Combining the strengths of academic excellence and leadership with personal, compassionate mentoring, Molloy strives to bring out the best in every student. Nationally ranked yet conveniently located in Rockville Centre, Molloy is large enough to offer students an academicallychallenging, quality educational experience yet small enough to provide the personal attention that enhances every student’s intellectual, ethical, spiritual and social development. Molloy recently expanded its International Education Program. Its sports teams compete in NCAA Division II, and it offers many clubs and service opportunities for students. At Molloy, students have abundant opportunities to explore new interests, pursue athletics and contribute to their community.
