Homes Fit For A King North Shore Mansions Helped Shape The Gold Coast’s Identity By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com ou enter a Gold Coast estate house after walking past a vibrant garden and a well-manicured green, lush lawn. The handmade bricks and heavy wooden doors are elegant parts of the exterior. As you observe the interior of the three-story home, your eyes are immediately drawn to the spiral staircase, the valuable works of art and the extraordinarily high ceiling, something you have never seen before in any other building. If you want to have such an experience, that of visiting a home in a highly desired location that was built with unique architecture, exquisite craftsmanship and quality materials that can stand the test of time, then Paul Mateyunas has a suggestion for you. Go back to the past. Mateyunas is both a real estate agent with Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty and a North Shore historian. He has authored a book on the mansions of

the Gold Coast era, North Shore Long Island Country Houses 1890-1950, as well as another book, Long Island’s Gold Coast (Images of America), to be released on May 7. According to Mateyanus, some of the most well-built homes in America were erected on the North Shore during the Gold Coast’s heyday of the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries, when the North Shore was truly the playground of the rich and powerful. “The materials and the quality of the moldings and the detail work in these homes is something that really can’t be duplicated when they were all made by hand,” explains Mateyunas. Those homes were mostly built during the era when the North Shore was the place to be for the lavishly wealthy who could afford an extravagant lifestyle. As industry boomed, many who made or expanded their fortunes were looking for a place to which they continued on page 8

Shopping Is A North Shore Attraction Celebrities are regular patrons of North Shore stores By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com hould I get a set of whitewall tires, are you going to cruise the Miracle Mile?” Long Island’s Billy Joel asks this in one of his songs recorded quite a while ago. Well, definitely you are, although today you would say you are going to cruise to Americana Manhasset. Because of the vast array of trendsetting shops that can be found on the North Shore which deliver the highest quality of merchandise, shopping is as large a part of the Gold Coast’s lifestyle as sailing and golf. And Gold Coast merchants say that customers who frequent their businesses are extremely articulate and knowledgeable consumers. “It’s a privilege to be able to shop the global markets in Europe and buy from some of the best fashion houses in the world and truly have an audience that appreciates these fashion treasures
“S
that we bring into the store,” says Victor Talbot Scognamiglio, owner of Victor Talbots mens store in Greenvale. He adds that that customers are also world travelers who, based on their itineraries, seek out the highest quality merchandise. George Giorgio has been the owner of Stresa Restaurant in Manhasset for 25 years and has 53 years of experience in the restaurant business. As does Scognamiglio, Stresa believes that his customers are extremely savvy in recognizing quality and expressed that it is much more enjoyable to prepare cuisine for customers who appreciate fine dining. Furthermore, he says that his customers are appreciative of efforts to serve the finest cuisine and that they are loyal to his restaurant, even through the ups and downs of the economy. “It’s the best area,” says Giorgio of the Gold Coast. “It’s really a fantastic place to have a restaurant on the Gold Coast. That’s for sure.” Because of the sophistication and affluence of North Shore clientele, the Americana Manhasset has been shifting its focus toward fashion and continued on page 26

In the early 1900s, the newly formed Yellowcote Land Company acquired a portion of the land. It is speculated that the name was changed to “cote” to give it more cachet to European investors. could retreat, offering a tranquil country setting and close proximity to Manhattan. The North Shore became an ideal location and was made even more so by a significant breakthrough in machinery – the automobile. “With the invention of the automobile, roads were created,” says Mateyunas. “People could get out of Manhattan, out of the city and come to a place in less than an hour and be in pristine countryside.” And come to the North Shore they did. Some of the most famous and wealthy Americans found the Gold Coast to be an ideal location. Mateyunas attributes part of the appeal to some of the private clubs that could be found here including the Meadowbrook Polo Club, the Meadowbrook Hunt Club and the Aviation Hunt Club. “Members like Theodore Roosevelt and other prominent Americans were members of that club,” says Mateyunas of
the Meadowbrook Hunt Club. The appeal of the water was also a drawing card. Mateyunas explains that many were attracted by the ability to anchor their boats near their homes in protected waters. Not surprisingly, because Gold Coast club members demanded the best of everything, their homes were built the same way. The most prominent architects of the era, including Harrie T. Lindeberg and John Russell Pope and the firms of McKim, Mead and White and Delano and Aldrich contributed to the architecture of Gold Coast mansions. “We really had an architectural renaissance on Long Island,” explains Mateyunas. “The number of styles that were out there were varied.” According to Mateyunas, architects of the era took their cues and designed mansions with inspiration from French chateaus, gothic castles and Georgian manor houses. The Gold Coast: An Intriguing Past Guides A Bright Future By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com ong Islanders know how unique the section of the North Shore that is referred to as “The Gold Coast” really is. There may be other parts of the world that have similar characteristics, but anyone who has lived in the New York area knows there is something special about the hilly region along Long Island Sound that has never been duplicated. It has been the home to a U. S. president who is honored on Mount Rushmore and is the setting for one of the most important novels in American fiction. Captains of industry, famous actors and actresses, writers, and world-class athletes have lived in the elegant and expansive estates in an area known for providing a pastoral feel and picturesque views of Long Island Sound, all while being within a short driving distance of New York City. And adding to the mystique of the region is the varied and enthralling history of so many of those who have lived there, with stories that have garnered national attention. Within the tales of the region’s famous and infamous residents are accounts of generous philanthropy, spectacular deceit, infidelity, and yes, even murder. “That kind of stuff, people can’t get enough of,” says Monica Randall a North Shore historian and author whose works include The Mansions of Long Island’s Gold Coast and Winfield: Living in the Shadow of the Woolworths. “You can’t make this stuff up.”

The Rich And Famous Come To The Gold Coast As the 19th century turned into the 20th, fortunes were made and expanded because of the advances in technology, which were a boom to industry. Many of the wealthiest Americans were located in New York, and they looked for a place to provide them close proximity to New York City with the elegance and charm of a country lifestyle. The Monica Randall’s book, The Mansions of Long Island’s Gold Coast, tells the North Shore became the perfect location. stories of the Gold Coast mansions as well as some of the fascinating stories of “It was a time in history that never happened be- the people who lived in them. In addition to the large manThe extravagance, quirkiness, elegance and uniqueness of The sions with scores of rooms on hundreds of acres of property, Randall Gold Coast was captured by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel, The speaks of a society, that was to say the least, overwhelming. She compares the Gold Coast estates of the early 20th century to kingdoms Great Gatbsy. Fitzgerald lived in Great Neck during the 1920s and it and she speaks of properties with indoor and outdoor tennis courts, inspired him to use the North Shore as the setting for his famous private zoos, and parties that spared no expense, including perform- work. The two-story brick house has a nine-bay entrance front that is articulated by full-height pilasters supporting a brick-and-wood baluster parapet that screens a low-hipped roof. The exterior bricks probably came from an 18th century farm purportedly built by Thomas Jefferson for General James Breckinridge in Williamsburg, Virginia. The garden front, which opens on formal terraces, features the two-story semi-octagonal bay that houses the tall salon. In 1922, Architectural Review magazine called it, “the most perfect country home in America.” The estate was willed to the Farwells’ nephew, who sold it to Charles Cushing. Although Cushing never lived in the house, he renamed the house Baywood, a name that appears on Boswell’s original blueprints. There is considerable speculation that he bought the house with the idea that he and his close friend, Mrs. George Baker, would make the house available to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, who were spending a great deal of time on Long Island. This plan never materialized and Mr. Cushing put the estate up for sale. Parke-Bernet Galleries held an auction for the furnishings. Mr. Cushing, Mrs. Baker and others in the community bought many pieces for East Woods school, including several mantles, the staircase (since removed), and the busts in the hall niches. East Woods bought the Cushing property and 14 acres on July

30, 1948 for the princely sum of $70,000. The school was able to acquire additional acres from neighbors, which were then converted to playing fields. Architect Everett Post made the initial recommendations for converting the house into a school. Since the original acquisition, the school has expanded as the needs of the community have grown and changed. In 2009, East Woods opened the new Upper School Academic building. Designed by the architectural firm, Perkins Eastman, the building echoes some of the architectural features of the stately original.

Although inspired by designs from around the world, the different mansions and designs somehow blended together to create a style that established an identity for the Gold Coast mansions. “What’s unique about these homes is the quality of craftsmanship, the diversity of architecture, the art and really the culture that developed from the inspirations,” expounds Mateyunas. “Basically, the American culture at the time, in this era, took all the best things from all the different cultures that were out there in different architectural styles and melded into one, uniquely American.” So, perhaps the best way to describe North Shore style at the time is to say that is was simply the best. In addition to borrowing from the most magnificent designs for styles, the same concept applied to the materials used and the craftsmanship of the work. Gold Coast residents could afford the best and they expected their mansions to reflect that in every detail. Mateyunas describes the mansions as being built by hand, including the bricks which he says were handmade and beautiful. The moldings were of the highest quality and all the details of the homes

were meticulously crafted and attended to. “Products and materials that really can’t be duplicated today,” says Mateyunas. And not only were the structures magnificent, so were all of the amenities that truly created a life of luxury. It’s hard to think of the early 20th century as being technologically advanced, but Mateyunas asserts that the mansions of the Gold Coast boasted all of the advances of the era including some that one would not expect to have existed in that time period. “No one’s thinking in the teens and twenties they had central vacuuming but they did,” says Mateyunas, describing a technology which is not even all that common in this century. He also states that many of the homes from that era had early forms of air conditioning and that the Gold Coast mansions were most efficient and had modern (for the early 20th century) amenities to make life as easy as possible. “While they looked as if they had been there for generations, the technology and design was very up to the minute,” describes Mateyunas. He further adds that the era and financial conditions helped to make these luxurious mansions possible. As Mateyunas explains, during and immediately following World War I, materials were not scarce. Additionally, there was a greater supply of laborers available needed to maintain such large es-
tates and labor costs of the era were far less expensive than later in the century. Therefore, the Gold Coast mansion owners were able to hire employees and do so affordably. “The amount of people that were required to maintain these houses was maybe 9 to 39 people,” estimates Mateyunas. However, it is said that all good things must come to an end, and the heyday of the Gold Coast mansions would pass as the 20th century progressed. Mateyunas points out that as veterans returned to Long Island following World War II, the G.I. Bill gave these veterans benefits which made working in service positions on the estates less attractive, thus shrinking the labor pool. He added that income tax and property taxes also made labor costs far more expensive. A shortage of labor combined with increased labor costs resulted in a decrease in the number of Gold Coast mansions. Mateyunas also adds that styles in housing changed, and a new era in which ranch houses became popular was ushered in. “People were looking to totally new styles,” says Mateyunas. “They were doing more manageable, smaller houses.” The number of mansions continued to dwindle throughout the remainder of the 20th century and the new millennium. Mateyunas estimates that only about one third of the continued on page 46

popularity of Gatsby parties. During a time of “Occupy Wall Street,” when many are identifying themselves as being part of the “99 percent,” the fantasy of being part of the “1 percent,” is lived throughout the flavor of these parties, even if they do channel the magic of the 1920s as opposed to the 21st century. So, in most cases unkowingly, many are celebrating the history of the Gold Coast. Interest in the novel, the North Shore, and the lifestyles of those who enjoyed the era to its fullest figures to be further piqued by the film remake of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie is scheduled for release at the end of the year. However, while those who lived on the Gold Coast seemed to have everything that life could offer, they were not without their scandals. When a society lives life to the fullest, it is hard not to have at least some who push the limits. As anyone who has read The Great Gatsby,
or for a more modern reference, watched Dallas, Dynasty, or Revenge can attest, when the rich and famous come together, scandals are sure to follow.
A North Shore Shooting Gets National Attention There was perhaps no greater Gold Coast scandal than the events of the early morning hours of October 30, 1955. On that morning, eerily right before Halloween, William Woodward Jr., financier and racehorse owner, and his wife, Ann, returned to their estate in Oyster Bay after attending a party in Locust Valley the previous evening in honor of the Duchess of Windsor. Woodward was the owner of Nashua, one of the best racehorses in America at the time. That year, the colt had captured the Preakness and Belmont Stakes after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. He would go on to be regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. On that fateful morning after re-

On The Gold Coast, It’s All About The Details NOT ALL CAR WASHES ARE CREATED EQUAL
When you think of going to a car wash, don’t make the mistake of thinking that there are no differences between them. In fact, you’d be shocked to learn that not all car washes are the same... Shopping Is A NS Attraction continued from page 4
lifestyle for more than 40 years. In 1971, the first significant shift occurred when B. Altman became an anchor store of the shopping center. Later, in the early 80s, owner Frank Castagna decided to further cater to the affluent community and added boutiques to the shopping center that created an experience similar to shopping in Paris, Milan or nearby Manhattan. Renowned architect Peter Marino redesigned the center and the North Shore had a premium shopping destination. Americana continued to bring in elite brands such as Prada, Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren and later Gucci, Cartier and Wolford were added. Additionally in 2003, Americana Manhasset undertook a 40,000 square foot continuation and architectural redesign of its east end. In 2006, an expanded London Jewelers Watch Salon and Gift Gallery opened at the Americana Manhasset and just this year, TWO by London Jewelers, a contemporary, diamond salon was launched there. London Jewelers being located at the Americana Manhasset is a perfect fit with the premier Gold Coast shopping destination. Charles London, the founder of the company, began London Jewelers as a successful clock and timepiece business in Glen Cove during the 1920s. As part of his business, he would wind the timepieces of the affluent and famous residents of the Gold Coast. His work brought him to many of the historic mansions that stood on the Gold Coast at the time, forever making London Jewelers part of Gold Coast lore. And while many mansions from that era are gone, London Jewelers continues as a premier jewelry business that meets the needs of the stylish and fashionable consumers of the Gold Coast. Another interesting aspect of shopping on the Gold Coast is the opportunity to shop at some of the same establishments as today’s
most popular celebrities. Because North Shore stores provide the latest in fashion trends and upscale quality, it is quite common to see movie stars, television personalities and famous athletes in the stores of the Gold Coast. Those who wish to style their hair in the same salon as some of the world’s biggest stars, should visit nuBest salon and spa on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset, where stars such as Natalie Portman, JamieLynn Sigler, Lance Bass and Aaron Carter have been patrons. Spokesperson Gianna Frocarro says that NuBest prides itself on maintaining the high quality of service that Gold Coast shoppers expect. “What sets us apart from other salons is that nuBest salon and spa far exceeds the conventions of the typical beauty salon,” says Frocarro. “While our thousands of clients ostensibly attend the salon for unrivaled cut, color and spa services, they return without fail for the unique and deeply rooted sense of culture that only nuBest can offer.” Scognamiglio and Giorgio both say that famous people have frequented their establishments. Scognamiglio says that Victor Talbots has provided wardrobes for current and past athletes and some of Long Island’s top CEOs. According to Giorgio, politicians, musicians, actors, actresses and athletes have dined at Stresa Restaurant, including Angelina Jolie and Robert DeNiro who lunched there while filming The Good Shepherd. Alan King was a frequent customer of the restaurant says Giorgio and even left his wine cellar to Giorgio when he passed on. “We try to not make a fuss to make them feel at home,” says Giorgio about celebrities who eat at his restaurant. “Celebrities are never bothered,” concurs Froccaro. “It is our responsibility to ensure that their experience at nuBest is nothing less than relaxing and fuss-free.” And, of course, they should also expect the best of everything they are seeking at any North Shore establishment they patronize, as should non-celebrities. It’s something that makes shopping on the Gold Coast so special.

turning home from the party, Ann shot her husband in the head with a double-barreled shotgun. She told law enforcement officials that she had accidentally shot her husband after mistaking him for an intruder. She stated that there had been two recent unsettling incidents in their home, and when alerted by the barking of a dog, she grabbed the shotgun and fired at the shadowy figure, whom she did not recognize. The incident brought widespread media attention, at least by 1955 standards. No charges were brought against Ann, and a grand jury found no evidence of a crime. Subsequently, someone would plead guilty to attempted burglary of the Woodward estate on the night of the shooting. However, there has since been much speculation about the events of that night and whether the shooting had indeed been accidental. As an interesting footnote to the events, the Nassau County district attorney at the time, Frank Gulotta was the father of Tom Gulotta, longtime Nassau County executive. As the 20th century progressed, the mansions of the Gold Coast began to disappear. Randall recalls the caretaker of one estate, who had remained after the owners were gone, allowing access to the estate and as well as the removal of one item in exchange for a bottle of Scotch. However, while the mansions began to dwindle, the spirit of the Gold Coast never did. In fact, throughout the later part of the 20th century and the next millennium, Gold Coast residents would continue to show their strength and their resolve.
Standing Up To Robert Moses

32 • The Annual Guide to the Gold Coast - April 2012
For example, there was the failed attempt of Robert Moses to extend the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway across Long Island Sound and into Rye. Moses has long been acknowledged for getting almost whatever he
wanted. He is sometimes vilified as having contributed to the Dodgers flight from Brooklyn when he envisioned a new stadium for the team not in Brooklyn but in Queens, which Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley balked at. Moses would eventually get what he wanted in that exchange, as despite the Dodgers exodus, the Mets would bring National League baseball back to New York and their eventual home, Shea Stadium, would be in Queens where Moses had envisioned a stadium. However, despite Moses being able to usually get what he wanted, he met his match in the Gold Coast. The residents of Oyster Bay and nearby towns on the North Sore objected, and the bridge would never be built, giving Moses a rare defeat.
A Great Neck Teenager Is Golden That same spirit of resiliency would once again be demonstrated by a North Shore resident, although this time the Gold Coaster would not be a captain of industry, or even a president, but a 16-year-old ice skater. It was 2002, less than six months after the tragic events of September 11th had devastated the nation and in particular, New York. Many North Shore residents were killed on that horrible day. The following February, the Winter Olympics returned to the United States for the first time since 1980. While high inflation, the Iranian hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan had shaken the country, the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team would raise the spirits of a nation by defeating a heavily favored team from the Soviet Union. Ironically, chants of “U.S.A., U.S.A.,” which echoed throughout the arena in Lake Placid were repeated at Ground Zero in the days following the attack. As the 2002 games commenced, Americans were again looking for the nation’s athletes to ease the pain and give the nation something to continued on page 36 Anton Community Newspapers

Yogi Berra once said about his favorite restaurant, “No one goes there anymore because they are too crowded.” Although we are often crowded, he would have found room, especially since the addition of our newly-built Italian courtyard-style room.

cheer about. However, this time it would not be the hockey team that would accomplish a miracle on ice, but instead it would be a teenager, Great Neck’s Sarah Hughes. The young figure skater’s talent was not questioned but at only 16 years of age, her experience was. She was not expected to win that year, many expecting her to triumph four years later after she had gained that valuable experience. She was in fourth place after her short program. However, after skating an exceptional performance in her long program, she escalated to first place and it was the United States’, New York’s, and Great Neck’s Sarah Hughes who won the gold. “It was an honor and a privilege to have them skating at our show,” Len Celluro, the superintendent of the Great Necks Parks District said about a recent performance by Sarah and her sister Emily, who also competed in a later Winter Olympics. The Hughes continued a tradition of outstanding athletes graduating from North Shore schools. Football Hall of Famer, Jim Brown, who is regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time, graduated from Manhasset High School. However, just as the Hughes sisters continued the tradition of success and accomplishments that have been exhibited by
North Shore residents, the knack for infamous national attention also recently reappeared when Great Neck was at the center of an SAT cheating scandal. More than a century after the mansions of the extremely rich and powerful dominated the landscape, much has changed throughout the North Shore. Many of the mansions are gone, and society in 2012 is certainly far different than that of the early 20th century. Yet, much has remained the same. The Gold Coast is still one of the most beautiful places to live with breathtaking views and beautiful homes. Executives from New York City still seek out housing on the Gold Coast because of its proximity to Manhattan, its reputation for excellent schools, its delightful country feel and its amenities such as beautiful beaches, first-class shopping, well-designed golf courses and cultural venues. And, the success, determination, and tremendous achievements of North Shore residents, as well as their ability to gain national prominence for themselves, also has remained constant over the years. The last line of The Great Gatsby, considered one of the mast famous closing lines in any novel, was written by Fitzgerald more than 100 years ago, but some would argue that it is as timely as ever. “We beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

Cocktails, High Fashion And Society Parties Planting Fields recalls North Shore culture oe Hall at Planting Fields in Oyster Bay is open for the season with the exciting “Cocktail Culture exhibition that can be seen every day, 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. through September 30. Starting with the 1920s, the show is a veritable feast for the eyes and includes fabulous clothes by some of the greatest designers of their time such as Mariano Fortuny and Elsa Schiaparelli. There are works of art for women’s feet made by Salvatore Ferragamo in the 1930s and by Dalman and I. Miller. Also included are beautiful hats by Tatiana of Saks 5th Ave and by Adrian of Hollywood. The cocktail is the consummate American medium, embodying a unique mixture of innovation, modernity and glamour. As shown

in the exhibition, its history in fashion, bar accessories, and popular imagery captures the spirit of an American phenomenon. The exhibit begins at the time that Coe Hall was being built, in 1920, the same year in which the Prohibition Amendment became law. For their new house at Planting Fields, Mr.
Trapani
and Mrs. William Robertson Coe had a very large secret storage space built in the basement for bottles of liquor. To this day there still is a massive safe door hidden behind a nondescript board and batten door that continued on page 44

might be found in any service area. It is clear that the Coes did not want Prohibition enforcement agents to know that they had 700 square feet of cellar with shelves for bottle storage. In Mr. Coe’s study, sometimes known as the den, the bar is also a hidden space, its entrance door seemingly part of the room’s Tudor style oak paneling. The general ledgers originally maintained by Mr. Coe’s New York City office, and now in the Foundation’s archives, reveal that in 1918 and 1919, the two years leading up to Prohibition, Mr. Coe was stockpiling liquor. During those two years, he spent a total of $35,349.72 (today over $441,000). Champagne and whiskey were the two most stockpiled types of liquor but also stashed were sherry, brandy, vermouth, and wine. The new law made it illegal to make or transport liquor, but Long Island became one of the most notorious routes along which liquor was trucked. Prohibition agents patrolled the highways ready to confiscate illegal liquor. Twice in 1924 agents caught Mrs. Coe’s brother, Henry Huddleston Rogers, having liquor shipped by his chauffeur from

his Long Island mansion to his apartment at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York City. Following the second incident in December 1924, Rogers’ attorney produced a federal permit declaring the liquor transfers legal. The Volstead Act had a loophole that allowed the transportation of alcohol from one permanent residence to another provided a permit was obtained. During the same period of time, speakeasies in the village of Oyster Bay were notorious, several of them conveniently located near the waterfront. The subject of cocktails is often a feature of novels of the period including F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 The Great Gatsby, where at a party on the North Shore it is observed that, “The bar is in full swing, and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside...” In the exhibition, dresses from the 1920s reflect women’s new freedoms, including the vote (1920); the flappers’ independence found expression in their new style uncorseted, skin-revealing sheath dress. The shorter skirts drew attention to the legs and the surfaces of dresses, which often had reflective beads, sequins and fringe, further emphasizing the flappers contagious energy. Hollywood embraced cocktail culture and the prototypical flapper. Films such as Three Broadway Girls, with its sassy gold diggers dressed by Chanel, showed its stars continued on page 52

mansions from the Gatsby era remain and he also laments that a few continue to be lost each year. However, despite the era of the Gold Coast mansion having passed, as a real estate agent, Mateyunas says there are still some unique and special qualities of those that remain. For example, he points out that many of the villages in which these mansions are located have zoning laws which would currently prohibit the building of a house which is as tall as those from that era. He further states that many of the country homes had ceilings that were 10 to 14 feet high, something which would violate many current local village height and square footage restrictions. “That’s what makes them unique,” he says. In addition, Mateyunas again alludes to the quality of the materials used, the handmade craftsmanship, and the care that went into every detail when these
mansions were built as why the remaining mansions are unique and cannot be duplicated today. However, even though many of the country homes have disappeared and society is different from a century ago, Mateyunas still finds parallels between the Gold Coast of the past and the North Shore today. “I think one thing that’s unique is certain things haven’t changed,” elaborates Mateyunas when comparing the two eras on the North Shore. “We still have a really unique society of people and homes that aren’t duplicated anywhere else in the country. And so, I think we have a unique group of residents and homes and styles and a lifestyle that’s really great because in less than an hour you can be in one of the greatest cities. Yet you can still have the country settings of Long Island and be in a beautiful home on the water or in the rolling hills of Old Westbury. We still have a beautiful community of unique homes and interesting residents.”

A well-conceived estate plan will help ensure that you and your heirs will enjoy the security of your assets. Yet many people fail to plan because they believe mistakenly that estate planning is reserved for the wealthy. It is true that husbands and wives may pass any number of assets to the surviving spouse without being subject to federal taxes . This simply defers taxes until the death of the second spouse. However, maximizing the marital deduction can actually result in increased estate taxes. By the way, don’t count on a repeal of the estate tax. Regardless of the estate tax’s future, you need to plan a smooth and efficient method to transfer wealth to the next generation or charities you wish to benefit. And for single people and married parents who have children from a former marriage, there are particular issues to consider. Your wishes most likely won’t happen unless you have legal documents in place that clearly state your intentions for how your heirs will be treated. If you’ve been putting off getting your estate in order because it seems like an overwhelming task, you should know that planning to leave your assets in an orderly fashion is often easier than you anticipate. It is important to think about whether you have the essential legal documents in place to direct the intended assets to those you love after you die. Take a close look at how your beneficiaries are named on important assets such as retirement plans. Many assets transfer to the beneficiaries named in the documents concerning those assets, regardless of what your will says. Most people named their beneficiaries when they first established a retirement account. It may be high time for you to review this information in view of changes in your family situation. Trusts can be an effective way to avoid probate, to pass your assets on as you intend, and to keep matters private. Various kinds of trusts can help you to avoid probate, provide for continued investment management in the event of your incapacity, ensure an orderly distribution of assets when you die, plan for minor and/or incapacitated children and fulfill your charitable goals. You’ll want to talk with your estate planning advisors about the type of trust that best meets your and your family’s needs. We have talked about federal estate tax, but there’s more. Some states also impose gift, estate or inheritance taxes. The rules vary widely from one state to another. In some, the applicable exclusion (or asset level at which they begin to impose estate taxes) is lower than the federal exclusion. For that reason, estates not subject to federal estate taxes may still need to plan for state estate taxes. It’s important to work with your financial advisor, accountant, and attorney to determine how your state’s legislation will affect your overall plan. These professionals can guide you through the estate planning process both to mitigate estate taxes and to ensure that both your values and your view of the future are reflected in the legal documents your attorney puts in place on your behalf. They can ensure you have up-to-date living wills to express your wishes for end-of-life care as well as last wills and testaments. in speakeasy bars at the height of Prohibition. Drink titles were inspired by popular fast moving dances, including the Charleston Cocktail and the Foxtrot Cocktail. Shoes in the 1920s reached an exceptional level of craftsmanship, innovation and ornate Art Deco designs, several types of which are included in the exhibition. The repeal in 1933 of the 18th Amendment that had banned alcoholic drinks reinvigorated cocktail culture. Innovative cocktail recipes, new forms of cocktail accessories, and supper and nightclubs proliferated. The term “cocktail dress” entered the fashion lexicon around 1935. With the ubiquitous little black dress a woman would wear costume jewelry and could top off her ensemble with a whimsical hat or fascinator. The typical 1930s silhouette was elongated and figure hugging, in contrast to the earlier sheath. Like the dresses, cocktail shakers took on the attenuated lines of the skyscraper aesthetic which was uniquely American. Speakeasies became legal restaurants, such Prohibition did not stop many from enjoying a cocktail, including William Robertson Coe, who stockpiled a large amount of liquor at his estate in the years prior to it.

as The Stork Club and the 21 Club, which still exists today and where Natalie Coe, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Coe, was photographed at the bar in the early 1930s. During World War II, government restrictions on wool, silk, leather, and nylon, as well as on metal buttons, pleating and full skirts, had a sobering effect on fashions. The era’s military-inspired silhouette for women had padded shoulders, slim hips, and a kneelength skirt better suited to practical wartime work. Paris was no longer the epicenter of new fashion; therefore, American designers became more inventive with designs for accessories, making fanciful shoes, hats, and gloves, which was an easy and economical way to embellish an outfit. At the same time, new materials, including plastics and synthetic fabrics, were used in innovative ways. With the advent of food rationing, the cocktail party became a convenient way to entertain without the pressure of providing a lavish spread of food. After the war, there was a return to the traditional and overtly feminine fashion silhouette. In 1947, Paris resumed its role as the

In regard to cocktails, gender-specific drinks became the rage; for women, brightly colored drinks the Pink Lady and the Brandy Flip. For men, cocktails were more restrained - the Manhattan, Old Fashioned, or Martini. At Planting Fields the cocktail era came to an end in 1955 with the death of Mr. Coe.
His second wife, Caroline, died in 1960. And so the exhibition ends with the traditional ladylike cocktail ensembles with the requisite hat and gloves of the late 1950s, and with a glimpse of the quintessential cocktail dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Cocktail culture, which began so many years ago, is now indelibly pressed into the fabric of American culture, if not worldwide. While styles may change, the cocktail and its rituals are undoubtedly here to stay.
